if you do a subject search for throttle body or ETS you'll come up with a number of threads.

I've read where costs are about $1200 .

Best info would be from Volvo Custome Care Center (800-637-3774)

Good luck

Hi,
Found this statement (below) on the UK Volvo site....one of my 2.4T V70's nearly expired, as did my wife when the **** behind only just managed to stop, after her car stalled, started and stalled again.......thought the stalling was a one off but things just got worse, checked for hose leaks, changed plugs, filters and MAS but still regularly cutting out once up to normal engine temp when slow moving or stationary at lights etc. Just found the threads about throttle problem.

One of mine does hi speed motorway and the other is a town car.....both at about 120K and regularly serviced....it's the town car that's palying up.

I'll post how I get on with my local Volvo dealer who looks after my two V70's after I flag it to them with thier own recall / defect notice.....(text below)

V70LVO

ETM (Electronic Throttle Module) Information
As Volvo's reputation is founded on safety, Volvo never hesitates to launch world wide safety recall campaigns when they are required. However, Volvo does not believe that ETM malfunction is a safety-related issue and this view is shared by the authorities in the UK.

However, Volvo is aware that some customers may be experiencing symptoms of an ETM malfunctionı or are concerned about the running of their vehicle and has therefore made a software upgrade and a component clean service available free of charge through approved Volvo dealers.

For clarification and to avoid unnecessary contact, the potentially affected models are:

1999, 2000, and 2001 model year S60, S70, V70, XC70, C70 and S80 petrol models

2002 model year V70 and S80 non turbo petrol and C70 petrol models

All S60 and V70 bi fuel models

Please note - no diesel models are affected

Regrettably some vehicles may require a new ETM and, in these situations, Volvo makes a contribution towards the cost depending on a vehicle's age and mileage.

Volvo would ask any customer who is concerned about this issue and owns a car listed above, but has not already had the software upgrade, to contact their local Volvo dealer in the first instance or the Volvo Car UK Customer Relations team.

1. An ETM malfunction impacts on the vehicle's emissions levels and can also affect the running of the vehicle. A combination of throttle positioning sensor irregularities, a dirty throttle housing, and/or inefficient software calibration may cause a warning lamp to light to notify the driver of the malfunction, or may cause uneven idling or the subsequent onset of limp home mode. Limp mode is a built-in safety feature which, while restricting the vehicle to a low speed of between 10 and 30 mph, enables the driver to stay in control of the vehicle and manoeuvre the car to a position of safety rather than come to a sudden halt.

Today, April 20th, my 2002 S-60 went into limp home mode just like it did one year ago. I believe it is again the throttle body but did not get any codes.
I found a recall notice for software. Has anyone else had this problem?
Last year I had to pay for the repair of the first one and several weeks later
it happened again and the car worked for 1 day. Then the dealer blamed
the main computer and replaced that free of charge. If you have had similar
experiences, please reply.

To v7olvo,

Thanks for the great quote on ETM. I have 2001 s60. So, my car is compatable for the recall, or repair. However, can you provide the derect URL (web adress) were you found the quote. Or if it is in hard copy, can you please scan it and post it. The reason for my request, is that I could prove to my local Volvo dealer and get the upgrade and cleaning.

Thank you,

- Kostea

I am having exactly the same problem.

Took the car to the stealership today and they suggested that the throttle body would need cleaning at a cost of £300.

They informed me that this works 75% of the time and that if it fails I wll need to replace the throttle body at a cost of £600.

I have tried using that link, but it is no longer there. Not sure whether to shell out £300 or go straight for the £600 option to ensure that I dont end up forking out £900. Obviously, I would much rather get it done for free like yourself as I doubt I will even get a car wash.

Can you send me the details of the dealership you used

Dixie - is there any chance that you could do the clean yourself ?

It's not the easiest job , but far from impossible - take a look here ...

ETM Cleaning

As mentioned in the link all it cost me was 34p for the gasket and a £4 can of carb cleaner and it's still running well now.

Also when I was enquiring about it i'm sure the dealed said that the cost of a new etm had come down to around £150 ?

If you have the Magnetti-Marelli ETM then it will be covered by the 10 year 200K warranty. I am assuming that this is an international extension of the waranty, not just a USA situation. Press the issue and save 600 - 900.

How do I find out if it is a Magnetti-Marelli ETM?
If it is, I will push the issue with the dealer. If not, I will try the clean up myself.

Watch closely for an update

It is on the front of the engine, just to the left of and below the air cleaner box. If I remember correctly it is a yellow label that will say Magnetti Marelli. I think all the 01's used this ETM, although some may have used the Bosch.

Also i'm sure i've read somewhere that the original ETM's had a white labe on them and the replacement one had a yellow lable - not sure if this is really the case though.

Mine has a yellow label so i'm assuming it has already been replaced at some point?

I have had a result.

Spoke to Gareth at Volvo UK customer services and am now having it cleaned next Monday free of charge.

If it does need replacing, they will the pay 20% of the total cost as it is a recognised fault.

For those that have paid already, it may be worth seeing if you can claim in retrospect

Picked the car up, didn't pay a penny. Didn't even have to sign anything.

Have been giving it a good run through all the gears and booting it down in manual and no repeat yet.

Definitely worth contacting Volvo UK if you get the same problem

I had the same problem with my 2001 s60 2.4T. The throttle body went bad took it to the shop(not volvo) they tired to replace the throttle body and they cut the wire because they found another one but it did not have a connector on it but still dident work (could not program it) then I find out that there was a recall on the throttle bodies and i still had warranty(cause volvo did a recall on them Recall no R155) so i took it to the dealer and told them. they took a look and made up a **** story that they cant cover it because the wire was cut. So after $1354 i had a brand new throttle body. The old throttle body has a white lable on it and the new ones have a yellow.

So if you have a 2001-2002 volvo s60 with a white sticker on the throttle body you still might be able to get it replaced or fix for free.
call volvo head office they will let you know for sure.

brand new throttle body is $984.99
throttle body gasket $6.00
software update is $60
2.7 hours to replace it $224.95
canadian prices.

Hi.
New boy on here from Scotland.
Just removed and cleaned my throttle body.
Bit of a pig of a job because of the location and access problems.
At idle, car was running in cycles - 700rpm to 1100 rpm and back down, cycle lasting about 1 to 2 seconds.
Now stable at about 700rpm.
