Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forum. I've recently bought a Volvo V40 (1999) 1.6, Silver, it's my first ever Volvo and I'm happy with it. However there is a strange noise coming from the clutch. When you ride the clutch or release it slowly there is a kind of grunting/squelling noise untill the clutch is fullty depressed. Have any of you Volvo experts ever came across this before. I'm a bit concerned the clutch is going to pack in. I've learned to tweak my clutch control so it doesn't do it but somteimes I forget. Any advise or help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kev.

Hello !

I also have the squeaking noise on my V40 1.6 from 2000. You can get rid of it temporarily but if you want a permanent fix, it's dealer for you :)

Put someone to press / depress the clutch while staying in the car. You look in the RIGHT side of the engine (while staying in the frond of the car) for moving parts. You'll see a lever moving left and right when your friend is pressing the clutch.

At the lever base there is a rubber "pyramid". Slide it up the lever and you will see a hole in which the lever moves.

Now your trouble (and MY trouble) is that in THAT hole, on the right side there's an elbow or bushing on which this lever moves. If it becomes worn or cracked, it starts squeaking. You can fix that temporarily (for under a month) by spraying WD40 or vaseline on it (holding the tube so the liquid enters in the right side of the elbow). Press and depress the clutch 10-20 times and you're done. The problem is that it will work like heaven for 1-2 weeks, but then it'll start sqeaking again.

Hope this helps !

Thanks for the advise, but I'm not sure it's the same problem. My problem only occurs when pulling away in 1st gear. The clutch pedal has quite a long travel but the "engage point" is very short. It's this point of the travel that seems to be causing the noise ie if you keep the pedal in the "engage point" for any period of time that's when the noise happens. If you pass this point quickly then there is no noise.

When the car is idlling or the egine is switched off there is no noise when the clutch pedal is pressed or depressed.

I understand. Mine is noisy even with engine stopped.
Did you check the brake fluid level ? The reservoir is shared between the brake and the clutch. Maybe level too low ?

I've read some problems about the clutch becoming sloppy and that was caused by the clutch slave cylinder.

Sorry, my problem was simpler :(
