My wife's '99 V70 T5 gets a P1171 code which indicates there's a long term fuel trim upper limit problem. The local shop did a full tune-up and replaced the front O2 sensor. The code came back after about 50 miles. The shop doesn't have a clue.

Does anyone have any ideas on what to look for?

Thanks in advance!

mauivolvo,
I'm a tech for a local dealer and may be able to help. This code is very deceiving and is commonly mistaken for an oxygen sensor problem. The actual problem is usually a failing MAF sensor, Mass Air Flow sensor. Tell the shop to monitor the MAF value with a scanner. At an idle with the A/C off the sensor should be reading around 14kg/h, if the sensor is bad the reading will be higher, around 16-25kg/h. Hope this helps

Thanks!! I'll run that by them and see if they'll run the test.

Thanks again!

volvotech06,

The MAF sensor replacement did the job. When they got the new one it was determined that there was a part change so it's possible the part has been updated.

Thanks again!!

mauivolvo,
I'm glad to hear that the MAF sensor solved your problem. And yes volvo did change the part number because they were aware of the failing sensors and made improvments to rectify it. They also did this with the MAF on the new S80. Glad I could help

I just stumbled into this - got problems with code P1171 on my 2001 S60T5. It originally had the 280 218 045 MAFSensor. Couldn't find one so we replaced with a new Bosch 280 218 108, which is the same as my 2001 V70T5 (and most of the rest of the turbos) have. Did NOT solve the problem. Question: What was the old MAFSensor p/n and what p/n did they replace it with?
Current plan is to replace front oxygen sensor.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as the nearest dealer (and VADIS/VCT2000) is 40 miles away in Tulsa and the car is almost undriveable.

Hey this might help. I just replaced my maf 3rd one in a in two years, but before I replaced it I put in a new 02 sensor the upstream one, so with just the new 02 sensor the check engine lite took a short time longer to come on still with the p1171 code.. By this time I was so fed up I pulled out the MAF that was still under warranty and exchanged it, 200 miles later no light no p1171 code and she is running like Hussien Bolt! I wish I would have checked the #'s on the old one, this update on the MAF is new news for me. I purchased it at auto zone for 165.00 all I know is that it is a Bosch, I'm going to check in to see if I have the updated MAF. Good luck. I know this situation is a major pain!
