Hi

I have now been driving my 2006 S40 2.0 Diesel for two and a half months, and have encountered a recurring problem with the fuel system.

It cuts out when the reserve light is dispalyed even though there is fuel in the tank

The owners manual states that the car has a 52l fuel tank. The dealer claims a 55l fuel tank.

The problem started from the very first time I filled the car with fuel, you see to date I have never managed to put more than 50l into the fuel tank, as there appears to be an air lock created. I have even driven the car to empty and a standstill and on this occasion only put on 48l.

Now this may seem arb, but the problem than came about where the car started to cut out on me even though it had fuel. I have had all sorts of explanations even from volvo sa (see below) but in short the dealers etc state that I should drive the car when the reserve light is displayed even though the car has fuel.

After 4 visits to the dealer the problem is still not resolved. I have had the following explanations:

1. Driving style ( i rarely take the car over 3000rpm)
2. The fuel tank has two tanks, a reserve tank of 5l and a main tank, the reserve light comes but you shouldn't drive the car as you can;t really use the fuel in the reserve tank (Your kidding me right!)
3. The fuel injection system has a safety mechnism to prevent air being sucked into the fuel line, and this is why the car cuts out (how ridiculous).
4. Volvo SA the car has a 55l capacity. The reserve light is displayed when +- 12l remains, only 7l of this is usable. (Whats the point of a reserve tank?)

Now this is not the first diesel vehicle that I have driven, but this car just seems to be poorly thought out.

Oh and one last thing, apparently the 2.0 diesel motor is actually a peugot motor.

Please respond if you have encountered a similar fuel problem with you 2.0D, I want to prove to Volvo that I'm not the only one with this problem.

Hello from Luxembourg;

I have a 2004 S40 New 2.0 Diesel.
My VOLVO isn't starting anymore, but the tank is half full !

The problem I have is that the fuel line to the engine is full of air, and I can't get it out :(
That's why I will come back to third point :

Well, in my case, you see, this safety mechanism ...
I guess either the fuel pump is broken or the fuel filter has a problem ?!

This afternoon, I will try to get the car over to my house. What would you recommend me ? and how to get rid of the air in the fuel line ??

It has been the "Vanne RGE" that had to be replaced. This is due to reduce the pollution and causes lots of trubbles in VOLVO S40 and V50 after 100'000 km.
Had it relaced in instantly by a VOLVO partner. costs 500 EURO
