Hello all - forum newbie :P

I have a '00 S80 non turbo model with 81,000 miles on it. Overall it has been a good car but not without its faults.

1) Front driver side there is a distint thumping noise (almost sounds like a flat/tire problem - but is not) which is especially noticeable when I am breaking and turning on a jug-handle or off-ramp from a highway... I can hear it hitting 40mph on a straight road as well and gradually gets higher pitched... The noise alone is annoying but sometimes I get physical feedback from the car (can feel it someties) and it worries me.

2) The engine fan used to run even after the engine was off. Now it doesnt operate at all sometimes and I overheat severly and have to turn the heat all the way on and run the hot air into the cab. Is there a website where I can see all the recalls for my S80? I heard the engine fan malfunction is a Volvo recall... Is/Was there a timelimit on any recalls? and do I have to pay a dime for any recalls on my s80? im new to this process...

3) I have the STC light come on... I am not sure what the problem is because STC works (won't let me burn out) and I can functionally turn if off by pressing the button on my console.... so whats with the light?

4) My trunk is locked SHUT. I even go to use the key manually but it WILL NOT open - its electronically locked... there is a button (3rd on the right) on my console which looks like a trunk with a key in it... it is lit up "red"... I press it, it doesnt change... I am presuming there is a problem with this switch and it has locked my trunk...? Has anyone had a similiar issue...

5) I have the ABS service light. ABS functions from what I can tell but very faintly... I have read posts from this forum about possibilities of problems but what do I ask the mechanic to check as far as giving me an exact diagnosis to my problem? (How/what do I ask them to check)

6) I recently have been getting the Emission System light + Check engine light. I had this in the past, but it then dissapeared for months... now it is back again. I heard it could be the gas cap? --- It did happen recently after I got gas... what do I check? Should I take the car to a mechanic and have this checked out as well? What do I ask them to check/diagnose?

Please help! :)

I would greatly appreciate any input/links/emails/phone numbers/direction in dealing with these problems. Overall the S80 is a great car - plauged by these terrible nuisances... I hope to get them resolved :/

Thanks a bunch!

BigNasty,
Can't answer all, but:
(3) & (5) I have an intermittent ABS and STC service light. No set pattern when it comes on- can be at highway speed, braking or any time. Mech thinks its just a loose connection. If you come up with an answer post it.
(6) Two thoughts- loose gas cap will cause emission light to come on. After tightening the cap it takes a couple cycles of starting to reset the computer. One other thing, although may not be related, take a look at below link or do a "throttle body" search. There's an issue going on and I'm not sure if it covers the 00. My 99 had the emission and service engine light come on- no performance issues. Mech (non volvo) said codes showed throttle body. Decided to hold off ($600 parts) and a couple weeks later car died- no power. Towed to Volvo dealer and they repaired under warranty. 120K miles.

Best of luck

*bump*

Update: I removed my gas cap, and closed it back up - 2 clicks on the lock. When I first started up the car, I let it sit at the power on as posted in suggestion by another forum member... the Emission Light still came up. I then turned off the car, locked it, unlocked it, and turned on the car again, waiting at the power - then turning the engine... light gone... :o gg quirky electronics...

Not sure if this will help or not but I had a similar issue with (4) my trunk. If you press and hold the button for a few seconds does the light go off? Try unlocking all the doors and then try the release on the trunk, next try the key with all the doors open/unlocked. There is also a release on the inside of the trunk if you can get through the middle of the back seat to the manual release.

Big Nasty,
1) Check your suspension components and sway bar link. If you feel there is a rumble specially while turning I would check the drive shafts, CV joints and or bearings.

2) The electronic module of the fan has a recall and has to be changed free of charge in any authorized dealer.

3) & 5) A defective ABS/STC module seems to be to the cause of the messages. Such module can be easily repaired by several non Volvo suppliers ( seems to be a faulty soldering ) Checking in other forums I´ve got this reference:vicrocha@earthlink.net but there are others. If you go to the dealer they will directly change it for a new and expensive one.

Bignasty,
I am a tech for a local dealer and can help with your problems. I can only be vague in my descriptions or could face reprocussions from volvo. The knocking noise in your front end is most likely due to a bad strut or a more common torn strut mount. The engine fan was a recall from volvo and is still covered free of charge. Your ABS and STC light are both on probably due to a failed ABS module, this requires a new module. And your emissions service message is on because of your ETM, Electronic Throttle Module. Go to your dealer and ask to have software campaign 155 performed, this is a free campaign to you. They will even replace your ETM free of charge if it has failed. The ETM on you type of vehicle has been warrantied for 10 years or 200,000 miles. Hope this helps.

Almost a year later update:

2000 S80 non turbo is now at 91,150 miles and is due for an oil change. The car itself is to my surprise running great and has survived abuse from not having the recalled engine fan replaced until 80k miles (holy smokes) Thanks to the advice I received on this forum about the recall no one felt inclined to tell me about (volvo or the used car dealer scumbag).

Thank you for the reply from the volvotech about the thumping noise. I am taking my s80 to my mechanic tomorrow and going to ask him check out the strut or strut mount.

The ABS module I am going to send out to Victor He seems very experienced and highly recommended.

The emission systems light was due to a retard gas attendant (live in NJ) not putting the cap on the proper way, making sure it locks in.

The trunk was locked via the valey security button (guys make sure you have your MASTER key handy) any other key in the ignition does not unlock this feature. Trunk now works as intended.

!!! One thing that does worry me however is that when I drive over 60-70mph on the highway I get severe feedback / vibration in the cab. I am not sure if i need a front alligment done or a tire balancing? Or if it is related to the thumping noise

Also I am now getting an intermitting check engine light which I am hoping is related to being due for an oil change - but probably not. Can anyone recommend a scanner unit that I can purchase on the low price ? :P

Also the door and floor panel seal/rubber trim needs replacing. Where the hell can I find an oem dealer or replacement for these? Is there somewhere i can get them factory direct?

Thanks guys and enjoy the positives of your volvos :)
