I had my first service done away from the Volvo dealership. 2004 S60 AWD

Do any of you know how to reset the service required message. (Canadian model).

The sales rep is trying to find this out for me as well. He knows it involves the pressing of the trip computer button and while holding in another button.


Thanks in advance for any help. If I find out on my own I will post here.

I called my dealership and spoke to a service consultant regarding the same issue. I was told to turn the ignition switch to position 1 and hold the trip odometer untill the service light blinked. At that point I was told to turn the ignition switch off.

Results: I reset the trip odometer (light remains).

I'm with you hear. If anyone could shed some light on this I would appreciate it.

Turn the ignition to position 1 push and hold trip reset while holding.Turn to position 2 hold trip reset till the service light flashes 3 times and then release.You should hear a beep to let you know it is reset.It might take you 2 times sometimes.If you have the message in the text window the little triangle in the center of the speedo assy. will flash.Also another trick to help you is when the milage returns the light should be reset.

I tried the whole proceedure. This is what I did

1) Turn the ignition key to position 1
2) Hold the trip odometer button down
3) Turn key to position 2
4) Hold for 10 or so seconds and then release

I did hear one beep, but I didn't see any flashing lights. This I tried a few times with no results. The directions are simple enough.

I have a 2001 T5 that was purchased in Italy new. It spent two years there before coming stateside. I purchased it just off of the boat last December (then it had 18.5k miles on it. It now it has 22K).

Anyway, could there be a slight difference here based on the cars origins?

There could be a slight diffrence.Your service light should flash when it is reseting.Some times these cars are very stubborn.It may take several attempts to get it to work.It gets very aggrevating.I always make sure the door is closed try it a couple of times if it doesn't work.I take the key reach outside with the door still closed and lock the car and then unlock.Then try again.Some times i have to do it 20 times before it will work.

I did read somewhere here that all Volvo's from 2000 up have to be reset by the dealer.

That sounds like all S60's?

All 99 and up models get reset the same way with the trip button.The dealer resets the stubborn ones with the computer.

Most try resetting the light with the trip first because it is easier.If they do it with the computer they have to drag it half way across the shop then hook it up the clear it.

Yes that will work on your S40.It works on all 99 and up Volvo's.

Here it is for all you guys who are proud Volvo owners s60 years 01-03 maybe newer cars too.

Resetting the Service reminder indicator (SRI), model years -2001
The service reminder indicator (SRI) informs the driver that it is time for the car to be serviced. The lamp remains lit for 120 seconds when the ignition is switched on.
Note! If the lamp flashes, it may be because one of the service parameters has not been programmed.
Proceed as follows to reset the service reminder indicator (SRI):
-Ignition position I
-Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer
-Ignition position II
-The service reminder indicator (SRI) starts flashing when the reset button for the trip odometer has been pressed for 10 seconds
-Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 5 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when resetting has succeeded.
Note! If the trip meter reset button is not released within 5 seconds the indicator is not reset. However the indicator will stop flashing.


Resetting the service reminder indicator (SRI), model years 2002-
The service reminder indicator (SRI) informs the driver that it is time for the car to be serviced. The text message is displayed for 120 s each time the ignition is switched on.
Proceed as follows to reset the service reminder indicator (SRI):
-Ignition position I

-Hold the reset button for the trip meter pressed in until the original value has been reset.
Note! For all vehicles from the 2003 model year a general yellow lamp will light when the reset button must be released.
-Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 4 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when resetting has succeeded
-If the trip meter is already reset the reset button should be held in for a minimum of 10 seconds and a maximum of 14 seconds.
Note! If the reset button for the trip odometer is not released within 4 seconds, the service reminder indicator (SRI) is not reset.

Glad you finally got it sorted.
I managed to get mine reset way back but I couldn't remember the steps so didn't reply.
The dealer told me it needed to be reset by his computer at a cost of £30 so I felt well pleased with myself.
Shortly after that I had to go to the dealer anyway to get a seatbelt alarm cleared and then again not long ago to get the rubber window seal in the drivers door replaced (all under warranty), they were really friendly and didn't mind me going round the back while the tech hooked it up to the computer, they even offered to drive me to work while my car was in the shop.

Hey Guys,

How about some advice on resetting the engine service light on older Volvo's?..like my daughter's 91 940T...I assume that little rubber stopper on the left side of the speedo has something to do with it..the shop in town I used for my regular 3K oil changes closed down and the new owners are clueless..

By the way, the resetting procedures outlined by TECH for newer Volvo's works like a charm :liebe011: ...,just be patient/it worked like a charm on the 12th time!

Even if you can reset the Air-bag service light, other than resetting the ecu I wouldn't advise it!
Air-bags can save your life, they need servicing for a reason.
Not doing this can result in voiding your insurance, and worse case scenario, say you had a passenger, they were killed because the air-bag didn't deploy, people could argue they would have had a good chance at surviving had it deployed then turns out it failed becasue the gas cansiter required replacing as part of the service/check, Manslaughter charges would be just around the corner, not to mention your pasenger in the after-life!
think you'll agree it needs addressing.
