I'm going to try and replace the camshaft seals, timing belt, and water pump on my 850 turbo and was looking through the Haynes manual and forums on just how to do that when I noticed I'm going to need a special Volvo tool. It's number 999 5452, but they are really expensive and the Haynes manual says they can be homemade, but there aren't any instructions on how to do that. Has anyone done this? If so, could you explain how so I don't have to spend big bucks on a tool I'll use minimally? Thanks!

That would work if I were just doing the timing belt, but since I have to remove the sprockets to replace the seals, that tool isn't going to work to hold the camshaft in place without the sprockets. Thanks though. Any other ideas?

I don't know of a tool that will hold the cams without the sprockets, sorry.

When we changed the seals behind them, we first used a measured-cut piece of wood (home-made?) to ensure they wont move after removing the belts. THen we loosened the screws first, without removing them. After aligning the 'sprockets' to the mark at the engine (if unclear or you cant find it, just get a permanent marker pen and make a new mark), we removed the sprockets carefully. Once out, the digging and pulling out of the old seal was straightforward. Putting new seals in was another careful agenda.
