This question is for anybody with experience towing with a Volvo. I have a small travel trailer with dry weight of 2500 pounds and tongue weight of 280 pounds. I'm looking for my next tow vehicle and thinking about an XC60 or XC70- both of which are said to tow up to 3300 pounds. The XC90 has a towing capacity of 5000lbs, but I have no use nor desire for 7 passenger seating, plus it gets lesser gas mileage. Plus I prefer the styling of the XC60 & XC70. Fully loaded (luggage, gear, water, etc) our camper comes in at just over 2800lbs. Plus we have a lot of hills to contend with. Would the XC60 or 70 be adequate? Or should I play it safe and get the XC90? It is just my wife and me- no other passengers.

Greetings from Kentucky. I have a 2008 v70. It has the straight 6 cyl engine. I put a 2' Curt reciever hitch on my car and occasionally pull a 4'x8' trailer. Mostly I use the hitch for a bicycle carrier. When pulling the trailer with a 1000-15000 lbs it really makes the car work hard....alot of shifting and the gas mileage is terrible while pulling a load. That being said, the kind of weight you'll be pulling would really be hard on your car especially on hills.

I have an old 850 that I use to tow a 1200kg caravan, like higg says it drops the fuel mpg a fair bit, but it does the job and never struggled on the hills, This year will be interesting as I have downgraded to a v40, which is a lighter car, but has only about 2hp difference in engine power.

What is the tongue weight on your caravan?

I presume you mean the same as we call nose weight - the data I have indicates a nose weight about 74kg for the caravan, which is close to the limit for my V40, judicious loading can reduce this slightly, but its never caused me any great problem, the limit for the 850 was higher.
