stanwilliams, I cannot help with your last query in your topic, but see me post on the 10th November with the same problem, although it was my front offside dip headlamp which was out.
A local garage could not sort out the fault, even though they found that electric was getting to the headlamp but the bulb was not lighting up.
I took the car to a main Volvo dealer - cost £422, which was £170 for a complete headlamp unit, £190 for labour, then VAT on top. It also needed "new wiring from nearside to offside." From what they told me wiring is not as robust as in years ago,and can be subject to corrosion. I do not know if they were ripping me off or not. Everything working fine now, but if you can find an independent garage, or are able to do it yourself, then it looks like you will save a lot of money. Best of luck.
