i have just bought a 1988 740gl turbo and i was driving it the other day and when i came to a set of lights just as i stopped the car stalled on me then wouldnt start...
i left it for a hour or so came back and it started and i drove away abd only went a few kms home.... what would this be i havnt driven it since!!

that is very common ,change your fuel pump relay,just google volvo locations behind your front ash tray remove the cover above it you will see your fuses, behind it is your relays ,the relay in the middle on the left hand side is your fuel pump relay get it from FCP grotan .

you wouldnt have any idea as to why it stalled out in the first place coming to a stop??

the solder in the relay starts to crack with the heat and open up, you then wait about 30 seconds and it will start up, that goes on only at the start of doing this, then it gets worse and takes longer to start if nothing is done about it,the fuel pump section of the ECU the cars brain can then blow, which will mean you then have to change the ECU, it happened to me , i did not change the relay for about two weeks of doing that, there is other things you can do to keep it running like clean the crankcase breather, take off and clean the inter cooler ,clean your idle control valve,and clean you butterfly on the throttle body,check the hoses from the turbo for holes,a list of other things can be done over time , but that will do for now.
