I own a volvo 460 1993 mod. and is starting to get some problems I cannot find out of. I have checked the alternator and it does charge and work the way it should. But the batery is not getting any charging. And now the car is dying out even when it is running. The fuel lamp is on, the batery lamp is on and the brake light (!) is on after this started to happen. Any idea what might be wrong or where I shall start searching?

With regards

Richard

when you say you have checked the alternator output ,what was the reading you found,as you have brushes on the regulator on the back of your alternator held on by two screws, they wear out and need to be replaced,or it can be your battery needing replaced,or loose wires on the battery and the alternator, that is why you need a meter to check the output of both your alternator and your battery, or it can be a loose belt.

I have checked the brushes and they are okay. I mesured the voltage on the batery it was 11.23 v. On the alternator the voltage was 11.25 v. So I have done the obvious truble shooting, so I wounder if it can be a relay or fuse problem?

that shows its your alternator that has the problem, the battery voltage should be over 12v, when the engine is running it should be up around 13-14v at least for the battery to charge.

how long was the brushes, and the fact you have a low output from the alternator shows the need for a new regulator the brushes fit on it.
