I have a beautiful S60 that has truly been the best car I have owned. There is one problem, though and it is one that I caused by being foolhardy One cold, winter morning here in Colorado (and Colorado has some very cold, winter mornings!), I got into the car to drive to work. I had let it warm a bit and decided to open the sunroof. It clicked several times because it was frozen shut. I persisted like an **** , then gave up and left it closed. When I did get it opened later that afternoon, it seemed fine until I closed it. I pushed the button to close in one motion and it slid shut, then the back popped up. I now have to close it with slight taps to align it to the roof line. Is there someone out there who can tell me how to fix the problem, short of taking it to my mechanic and having the entire sunroof replaced? I would be eternally grateful for any suggestions. Hey guys, I have a 01 S60 2.4T and it has problem. I began to feel vibration when accelerating the car a while ago and heard some scratch noise from the front wheel since about 2 weeks ago after a trip to death valley.



I took the car to the dealership and I was told the transmission has problem. I was told I need to replace a new transmission and both drive shafts. Plus labor it will cost me a forturn. Man I cannot afford that much on it and that's not what I wanted to do.



I appreciate if any of you can recommend a garage in Las Vegas which is reliable and good at dealing with volvo and/or transmission work? I hope there is some expert can help me do a rebuilt. It doesn't have to be too cheap but should not rape me off. Thanks.

New S60 owner! Recent convert from 2004 S40. Just purchased '05 S60 2.4 model with factory 15" wheels. Want to put OEM Volvo Nebula Wheels in 18" with 235/40/18 tires. Anyone know if there will be any problems fitting due to the fact that this model doesn't have any of the sport suspension and such??
Tried to search for this on 2.4 and didn't find anything in the forum.

I bought my first Volvo last week - a 2002 D5 S60 SE with R alloys. It's a lovely car and very comfortable, just needs a service and some new tyres on the front.

My only gripes so far are the vibrating clutch, which from what i can see is a common fault - any ideas how much it will cost to get fixed?

My other gripe is the gear knob - the stitching is grating my hand. Has anyone else replaced theirs? I'm struglling to find one that won't look out of place because the interior is all dark grey, so a black one would look silly.

I'm also looking for an ipod solution. I've seen the iMiv, but by the time it all gets installed, this looks like it could be a bit pricey at around £250-300.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Does anyone know where I can get the spring mechanism that keeps the glove box from flopping down? I've been looking at parts web sites, but this piece is impossible to find. It is on the right side of the glove box, behind it. I also need to figure out how to take the glove box out if I do find this spring. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

What should the repair time be on replacing a fuel pump on a 2001 s60 non turbo

I filled my car to the brim with diesel this morning and pulled out of the petrol station up a big hill with my foot down. The warning display came up with "engine system service urgent" and the management system seems to have limited the power to 2500 rpm as it won't rev any higher than that.

If I switch it off the error goes away until I put the engine under load at about 4000 rpm.

Any ideas?

In the last year I've had 2 intercooler hoses, an intercooler and an injector and I'm getting seriously fed up with this car.

Luckily I also have a trustee Honda C90 which has become my regular emergency transport!

The Goodyear tires on my S60 R are rubbing when I pull out of my driveway or make a sharp turn. I removed the small aluminum plates mounted in the wheel well but the rub is still there. I did a search and found that Vivaperformance.com has spacer kits. Has anyone installed these and eliminated the rubbing problem?

I went to Volvo dealer in Maryland; I was told I need to have the PCV system replaced because it's clogged.... Volvo want 520 bucks!
(It was causing the whistling sound i thought was the serpteine belt!!! they said this could cause the car to cut off)

My question is can I take it too Midas? or Precision Tune? and get it done for like 350 bucks!

Help what should I do? The manifold has to be taken off for that.

I need to have the transmission fluid changed they said it was burnt! dahell

Ok I'll have to admit up front that I made a dumb azz mistake.

I bought it used had it since April and didn't know until today i was supposed to use PREMIUM gas.... I have been using regular grade fuel in my car and it has affected my H2o sensor and i guess its blown so my car cuts off on me but will start right back up....

what do I do? If I start using premium gas will it fix it's self and stop cutting off? even if I don't change that sensor?

Hi everyone, Im Bill, new here..Have a "driving me crazy" problem....I have a 2004 S60R w/50k miles, i dont know what happened, but one day i felt a sputter, and the check engine light came on. NOW, everytime I idle, or drive slow, the car jumps and feels like its not getting fuel, like it turns off and on, but still barely running. I changed the fuel filter, the light shut off for 10 minutes so I thought the problem was solved, but, yet again, same thing. ill be driving, all ok, then I feel a little sputter, and all hell starts breaking loose. Its died on me 5 times, not while doing 100+mph, only when im cruising at the same low speed. However, all 5 times, ive opened my gascap and heard a hiss, then the car started but still sputtered. Im absolutely loosing my mind over this. I dont know how to pull codes to tell you guys. Can someone please help me? I love this car but I cannot keep taking pills to stop my sterss lol....

Drained gastank to see if there was water or metal/dirt

I have terrible AM radio reception in my 04 S60 R. I read similar posts stating the same issue and went and got the "brass strip" from the dealer. The helpful guy at the counter had no idea where it should be installed. Has anyone done this? Please let me know.

I am looking to buy an used 2001 S60 Turbo (not the T5, but the mid-tier one). I'm reading the threads here and am getting educated on the different issues common to the S60.
I really like the S60, however my biggest concern is reliability... I do not want to spend a lot of money on repairs, esp. on repairs that may be common to the S60 in general.

So bottomline - would you buy your S60 again? Any regrets? I'm budgeting up to $10K for this S60 and I would like it to last at least 5 trouble-free years...

Today my 2004 S60 made some type of loud humming noise. It was almost like a siren. It was raining outside and it happened as I was coasting at about 50 miles per hour. As I came to a stop the noise stopped and hasn't happened again. Any ideas?

Help is needed! I have trouble code for a leak in the evaporative emission system.
Problem is, i can't find the test port to allow me to test and fill the system to fiind the leak.

Any help out there would be greatly appreciated.

I heard that there was a recall on the software for the emissions that sent a trouble code where no trouble existed also.

Does anybody know how to replace the low beam bulb for the driver's side?

It is really tight in that spot with tubes and the air filter housing taking all the room. I can't get my hand in there to pop off the cap let alone remove and install.

Please advise. (One of several frustrations already with this car that I've had for just over a year)

I purchased a Garmon 260W on the weekend for my 2004 S60. The Garmin vehicle power cable will not fit properly in the accessory socket. It will pop out every time I go over a bump. My wife had to hold it in place while we were driving. I went back to where I bought the Garmin and they told me that Volvo & BMW have smaller than normal accessory sockets and this was a car problem and not a Garmin problem. Is he right and if so is there a simple solution? I know Volvo now offers a Garmin 760 that is hardwired but that is much more than I need. The Garmin plug fits perfectly in the neighbours North American car.
This must also be a problem with laptops and all the other gadgets that plug into the accessory socket.

Dear All

New to the site but have had my Volvo S60 D5 SE (185) - 48,000 Miles July 2005 for approx 1 year now. Couple of weeks ago, just before I was booking it in for its annual service, I noticed that the engine was not getting up to temperature properly (Temp Gauge used to get up to the middle and stay there -even in heavy traffic). The Temp Gauge is only registering either the first or second mark (And a little higher in heavy traffic). Coupled to this I got a warning on the dash "Soot Filter Full - See Manual" which was followed afetr approx 20 miles by "Engine System Service Required" and a huge drop in power (Some type of limp home mode I suspect).
Anyway, went in to service (Still under Warranty thank goodness) and they found oil in the coolant. I immediately thought Head Gasket but they said it was the Oil Cooler. I also said that I thought the thermostat may need changing (Obvious I thought with the funny temperatures) After two weeks with Kennys Volvo in Galway, Ireland I had the car back. I noticed the temperature was still not right but as they had told me the problems had been fixed, I carried on as normal. Then approx 200 miles later faults reappeared (Soot Filter and Engine System).
Booked it back into Volvo again telling them to change the thermostat.
Got it back the next day - Errors cleared, Software updated and supposidly OK now.
Again after approx 100 miles errors have reappeared. It is booked in on Monday for them to have another go at it but I'm sure they havnt got a clue what the problem is.
From reading the manual, the soot filter regenerates itself every now and again whe at full engine operating temperature. If my S60 never get to full temp, its obviously not regenerating and hence filling the filter. A full filter then leads to the Engine warning.

Any help/Ideas on this would be greatly appreciated as I have no real confidence in the volvo dealer (Who wont even give me a courtesy car when mine is in).

Anyway, sorry about the length of the post but just wanted to air all the details.

Bought a 2001 S60 2.4T Certified Pre Owned from Volvo with 46,321 miles on 5/27/05. Went out of warranty 4/07. As of 5/16/08 I now have 69,300 miles and am being told by my servicing volvo dealer that I need a remanufacturer Volvo transmission, right axle, right CV joint, rear seal and motor mounts.

I've never had any service messages come up. I'm complained about sluggish shifting & acceleration, rolling forward while in park while it was under warranty, fluid changes & software upgrades "were the solutions" with no results.

I've endured the bulb & brake replacement issues and service it at Volvo at all intervals, and now that it is out of warranty, gosh you do have a problem...we'll buy the transmission but you'll have to pay the rest $1,200+ according to my servicing volvo dealer but it's a limited time deal that the service manager is willing to "buy" the transmission. Why can't Volvo admit they have a major transmission issue, that they wait until your warranty is up to "diagnose" you have a tranny problem and stick you with price to correct their design flaws?

I registered my complaint to the NHTSA, Volvo, VexedVolvo. There are tons of complaints all over the internet against Volvo.

Can someone guide me how to get some satisfaction from Volvo and has anyone else gotten the "special deal song" from their dealer to make the problem go away?

I've posted on here before about this, but got no clear answer.

A little history: over the last month my S60 has intermittently refused to start. I would turn the key forward, all the electrical items would work, but the motor would not turn. The first three times it happened it was fine, as I was at home, and could take a bus where I needed to go. But on Friday, I was stranded on the other side of town, in front of a liquor store, with about 30 minutes to go before guests were arriving at my house for dinner - whose ingredients were in my trunk.

So I got a lift home, mad, and got drunk. Later, looking here and looking there, I discovered that it could be a problem wire leading into the starter. Sure enough. Car wouldn't start, jiggled a wire under the hood, car started.

So for anyone else who is having this problem, do this: the starter is on front, right side of the motor, about halfway down. It is the size of a small shoe. On the left hand side, there are two things leading into it: the front item is (I take it) the lead from the battery, a thick red cable securely bolted to the starter motor. Behind that, a little hard to reach, is a set of wires coming out of the wiring harness below and plugged into the starter motor. Jiggle that for a few seconds, and you should be able to start the car again.

Now the question is, what can be done about this in order to stop it from happening again? This is something I will explore with the Volvo mechanic tomorrow. I'll post my results. But I'm happy to hear from people in this forum.

I recently purchased a 2001 S60 Volvo and have filled it with fuel many time. Today, however the fuel cap door would not unlock to allow me to fuel the vehicle. Coudl someone please give me some advice on how I can disengage this lock?

Hey all, my dad's 2004 2.5T AWD gets real strong vibration sometimes on the highway, Volvo said it was a loose exhaust mount that makes the tubing rub the driveshaft. A new, "trustworthy" (longtime friend of family member) says that SECOND, or more rearward driveshaft is actually slightly warped, and at higher speeds this is starts to cause stronger and stronger vibrations. Has anybody heard of problems with the S60 driveshafts before? Specifically the second or more rearward part? There's only a few months left on the extended warranty, and if Volvo drag their feet I'm afraid we might have to cough up the money to fix this ourselves. Any knowledge, tips, or advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

First of all, I have a 2002 S60, base model I think, but automatic.

I purchased the car in 2007 with 95K miles on it and now it has close to 115K miles; I drive a LOT.

Here's the weird issue:
Today I was driving in moderate weather (55F) and all of a sudden the CHECK ENGINE light started to BLINK and the message in the box read, "SLOW DOWN OR SHIFT UP" and kept blinking. After a few moments, the message cleared off and everything seemed fine, but it wasn't. Every time I accelerate the car is hesitant on moving and the CHECK ENGINE and "SLOW DOWN OR SHIFT UP" comes up. I just don't understand it! I thought this would happen in a MANUAL, you know, when you forget to put the car in gear, THAT WOULD MAKE SENSE!

So, anyway, the car moves --- but whenever I stop it just starts THUMPING and THUMPING and makes me really nervous.

Is this the transmission? Any ideas, or same issue? Also --- I should note that, I am really not good with cars and I bet that the transmission fluid hasn't been flushed in either a VERY LONG TIME, OR NEVER.... so could that be it?

This issue with my 2002 S60 AWD started over a year ago, very occasional at first, now growing more frequent and troublesome.

Basically, at times I will be making a hard turn (steering wheel all the way left or right) and giving the car gas (either forward or reverse) and I will notice there is some sort of "tension" sensation, and that the car is very hard to move. Within a few feet, even giving the car a lot more gas will not make it move, something is stopping it. Example - reversing down driveway, hard cut to get on the road, suddenly I can go no further. If I put it in drive and straighten the wheel out, I can then move again, and can try going back into reverse. It always seems to be in slow-speed situations like that, i.e. parking, u-turn, etc.

There are no noises that I can hear when this happens. The only other symptom I can notice is that sometimes when this occurs at the very end of a drive (hard turn into a parking space) when I shut the car off there is a jolt (kind of feels like a stall).

Does anyone have any ideas as to what's going on? The local Volvo mechanic has taken it out for a drive but of course, the car behaved for them, and both they and the dealership cannot find any suspects by visual inspection. I'm going in for my 60K tune up this week and would appreciate any suggestions I could pass on to the mechanic.

Well i was in the market for a GPS and didn't want to deal with the hassle of removing the factory stereo (which I like anyways) so I went with the new Volvo system. Let me start off by saying the install directions are great and mount is pretty good. MY only complaint is the unit is sitting at a slight angle. I used the template provided but the angle of the mount is just a little askew. Not to bad just noticeable. During the install I didn't remove the vent cover because it didn't want to come out and I didn't want to break it. That really wasn't needed because you can feed the wire right up past it. So far I have had it for about a week and the GPS seems to work very well. It has a fast boot time and finds the signal really quick. I like the Garmin line anyways due to the features and easy use.

Just had my MOT and although it passed, they noted that the N/S rear anti-roll bar bush was deteriorating (I have noticed some annoying knocking noises). I imagined it would be a couple of £ but my dealer says you have to change the entire anti-roll bar (£133!). Is that correct or has anyone found an alternative?

My friend and I were replacing the drivers side ball joint (2001 S60 tse) but looks as though we've pulled the driveshaft out a touch too much. we;ve took the boot joint back and seen the bearings have come out of the central ring (im not too car friendly!). My friend knows about cars and knows in principal what we need to do but he's not seen a design like this. We put the bearings back in but the central "bit" - what the driveshaft goes back into does not pivot so we can assume its not in correctly.



Any ideas where we might be going wrong.
