I was just quoted a price of $750.00 to replace the alternator on my 2001 volvo s80 t6. I am considering attempting to replace it myself. The average price online is about 200 compared to the 460 the shop is going to charge. Does anyone have any advice on where I can find the alternator and any problems that I might run into when I attempt to fix it out myself. Thanks

my 1999 s80 hesitates, sputters and eventually stalls only when the gas tank is between full and 3/4. After pulling over the engine restarts, and it may run fine for a while. It seems to stall predominately when I am decellerating when coming to a stop or slow down.
the car runs fine with less than 3/4 of a tank. I have tried different gas but noything seems to work. any thoughts?

I own 1999 Volvo S80, T6 with 58,000 miles. Since I bought it with 36,000 miles in 2002 I have had to replace the ETM twice, each time it cost me over $1,000. Any wat to fix this problem once and for all or do i need to plan to replace the ETM every 14 months? Bill

In a rare fit of brilliance I followed the service agent's advice and had the throttle body cleaned by the service department of our local Volvo agent.

I left the S80 with them at 7.30am. Walked into town and had breakfast at McDonalds. Car all finished at 10.30am. Cost NZ$200.00 with Volvo Owners discount.

The technician cleaned out:

carbon
oil
grease
last week's rice pudding

It's a great feeling having your car serviced by Volvo trained engineer's. Got it right first time

The car is performing brilliantly now. Very smooth and very responsive.

I have a 1999 S80 T6 with ~90k miles on it. Upon starting the car in the morning, it usually will not start the first time. The engine turns over, and then begins surging for ~6 seconds, then dies. Upon restarting it, no problems. Also, if If on the first start, I turn the key, let the enginie turn over, and then turn it off again, the car will start on the next key turn no problems.

Hi all,

I want to hard wire the power connector for my PDA (which I use as a GPS system), the cable isn't too long, what is best place to tap this off ?

I was thinking of getting to the back of the cigerrette lighter and tapping it off there.

Also can someone advise how to remove the centre console on an S80 ?

Can anyone also advise of the speaker sizes in the S80's ?

I tried to clean my 99 2.9L NA ETM today. It seems an easy job. I first removed the intake hose clamp by using a 7 mm socket. But, I was not able to remove the CLIC type small hose clamp on the intake pipe side of oil trap vent hose (the vent hose is connected from the top of the oil trap to the intake pipe just below ETM).
How did you remove the CLIC type hose clamp? Are you using a special tool?

Otherwise, I have to cut the small vent hose to remove the intake pipe from an ETM. The CLIC type hose clamp can be removed from the intake pipe since there is more room (after the intake pipe is removed from an ETM). Then simply install a new vent hose after cleaning the ETM. Thanks in advance.

My 1999 S80 2.9 is running really rough. With the car running I unplugged each ignition coil wire one by one, each one that I unplugged made the engine run even rougher except for the 4th, when I unplugged that one it still ran exactly the same. I put in a new ignition coil in the 4th cylinder and replaced all the spark plugs and its still running rough. Anyone have any more ideas as to what the problem could be? Earlier on I had the codes read by the dealer and the throttle body code was coming up and they said I would probably have to replace the throttle body, could that be the reason for a dead cylinder, if so how does that work? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, I would like to explore all options before shelling out $1000 for a new throttle body, which I was told I could not put in myself but has to be done by the dealer.

My S80 T6 90,000 miles does:

- When I turn the A/C, it makes hum sound then off and then on and off... Is it natural?

- My cruise control display goes on randomly and works. Many times the cruise control does not work. So should I change the whole cruise control module or is it just a switch problem? I would say the cruise control works 50% of the time.

- For the suspension (shocks, upper spring seats,...), should I necessarily go to Volvo specialists? One Volvo specialist told me that both front upper spring seats must be replaced. Then a month later, Volvo dealer told me that my front left shock is bad. (Why did he say nothing about upper spring seats?) I am just confused. The car seems to be OK, although it makes sqeaking noise when I pull to a stop. The tires seem wearing OK.

I found this very useful information to remove the left hand side of the PCV oil trap mounting bolt. A 10 mm socket can't be located on the bolt due to a tight space. Sholt (vvspy.com id, Brian T, San Diego) made a 10mm customized wrench as shown below. The followings are some of his posts on the vvspy.com

To start you will need a new intake manifold gasket and oil trap seal. Volvo sells these for $21.60 and $5.74 respectively. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery in the trunk. Remove the intake air piping to the air filter box. Remove the air piping to the throttle body. Disconnect all of the vacuum lines to the intake manifold and label. Disconnect the electrical connector for the throttle body. Remove the protective cover to the fuel injectors. Disconnect all of the electrical connectors for the injectors. Relieve the fuel pressure in the fuel rail. Disconnect the fuel line at the quick disconnect fitting. You will need a quick disconnect tool available at any auto parts store. Remove the top row of bolts from the intake manifold. Remove the the outer bolts from the lower row of the intake manifold. Loosen the remaining bolts on the lower row and lift off the intake manifold. Now you can see that oil leaking trap. There are two 10mm bolts that hold the oil trap box up against the seal on the engine block. The right one is easily removed. The left one (Passenger side of vehicle) is obscured by the accessory bracket. You will need a 90 deg 10mm tool in order to loosen this bolt half way out. I made one by cutting the boxed end off of a 10mm box end wrench, then welded the shank of the wrench at a 90 degree angle back onto the box. Without such a tool, the alternative would be to remove all of the accessories and bracket. Once the right bolt is removed and the left one loosened, you now can loosen the outer hose clamp fitting on the hose at the bottom of the oil trap box. Now you can pull the oil trap away from the engine block enough to see the offending seal at the top of the box. Clean both mating surfaces and install the new seal. The new seal has been redesigned with new material and physical shape. Reassembly at this point should be self apparent. DO NOT forget to reattached the fuel line. When all is back together, before reattaching the negative battery cable, insert the ignition key and turn to position II. Attach the neg cable to the battery. Reset a couple of the cars control modules by unlocking the doors with the remote. Reset the sunroof by starting with it closed. Press the open switch to were the sunroof is in the tilt position and release the switch. Press the switch again and hold for at least 5 seconds. Sunroof will then be reset. If you have the standard climate control, then calibrate the blower fan as follows. With ignition on, rotate the blower fan to maximum, rotate to minimun. Blower fan calibration complete. Reset your clock and radio presets. This job is really quite easy with the exception of that 10mm passenger side mounting bolt on the trap. Why they didn't design the bracket with a cut out is beyond me. Remember that this is from memory from recently performing this on a turbo engine. There may be some minor ommissions and or differences with the normally aspirated model. Hope this helps.

I've got a low oil pressure message in my S80 Volvo. I took it to the shop and they tried a lot of things, until they realized that the oil pan o-rings were bad. They replaced them and the pressure now is fine. The problem is that the light with the message still comes out. They also replaced the oil pump. Please, help. They say that they have done everything that they could do.

After I run about 2 hours in a intown blockade (run very very slowly aprox 10 km in 2 hrs) the yellow arrow (transmission light) start flashing, also the econom. green LED.
The transmission works fine, no problem with lower speeds (starts nice, 1st, 2nd, ....)
acceleration is fine.
I already made another around 1000 km, intown and highway from 1 up to 140 km/hr (need to came back to my home town from Toronto), but the light is still on.
Any ideas?
I dont want to force my luck . . . .

I have a 1999 S80 2.9 which has some rough idling prolems once in a while. When I start the car it would idle really low (choking like it's not getting enough air), loss of power, couldnt go past 2000 RPM and the Engine Service Required Urgent light would come on. I would shut down and restart the car a few times and eventually it would idle normal but the Emission Service Required Urgent light would always follow, but also would go away after a few restarts. Now the Engine Service Required Urgent light is always on (but idles ok) so I took it to the dealer and they said that the codes indicate that the throttle body needs to be replaced. My question is, can I take a used throttle body and place it in my car and then get the dealer to download the software to it, or is there more to it? One of the guys at volvo (non-mechanic) told me that some parts are configured specifically for each car and said that when I put the throttle body in it might not work with my car, is this true?

There was only one part we did not have in New Zealand. The Cap/End Camshaft S4. The agent had to acquire one from Australia (where ever that is). That is one thing Australia is good for. If we don't have the parts here-the Australians have always had the parts in stock. That has been the case for both of my Volvo's.

I must say that I have always found Scandinavian Motors a pleasure to deal with. I know that a lot of members have precious little to no time at all for their local Volvo agent. I can't speak highly enough of ours.



Did you notice anything about the Parts list? It is the first time I have ever noticed a mistake.

I have had my S80 for a year today. I am very happy with it.

unexplained fluid loss on my '03 with 17000 miles; have been reading about this issue on the net..this looks like a quick way for a dealer to make a buck on the public..please check your fluid levels before taking car into dealer with a wheel noise issue..the fluid they add will cost you plenty..

Where is the fuel filter located on a 99 s80 the non turbo version?

Does anybody know if I need to take off the the crankshaft pulley in order to replace serpentine belt on 99' S80. I have replacement instructions for S70, but it does not seem that I can replace the belt by following these instructions. Any help will be appreciated.

another problem with this s80. as i was driving home, all of a sudden my turn signals stop working. secondly, i lost cruise control ability and could not scroll though my on board computer. any thoughts before i drop more money on this thing?

Recently the a/c compressor clutch released even though the cabin temperature of my S80 was higher than the temperature set point. I sent my car for service at a Volvo dealer and the technician attribute this problem to a faulty a/c compressor. However the problem would go away when I restart my car. Is this due to a faulty compressor clutch or is it due to the compressor. Changing would cost USD1100.

I was also told that the emission service indicator will light up if the ABS modulator is faulty. I experienced intermittent indication to service my emission system. The modulator cost another USD1200.

Kindly advise.

This morning i tried to start car and it was dead two messages showed up . pull over safelly and restart and engine system service required any ideas what may be the problem? Car worked fine yesterday.

The climate control comes on and off to regulate the temp. But when it comes on it lasts for a few seconds but it is definitely a swish noise. It is the climate control because when I switch it off there is no noise. Is this normal on this model?

Under hard Acceleration the power delivered seems to almost pulse.

you get a second or so of extra power?

The car drives amazingly well i noted the last service had been completed by a Volvo dealership and the MAS had been replaced think this is the air flow meter?

Any suggestions?

I also have since discovered the RTI CD-ROM is missing from my car any suggestions where a replacement can be obtained Dealer wants £120 GBP

Does anyone know if thr RTI CD Changer can be used for music CD's?

If it can't can anyone suggest a cheaper alternative source than a dealer who wants in excess of £350 GBP to supply a CD Changer and connecting cable?

And finally does anyone know if the TV (optional unit) can be fitted or if it can only be installed by the dealer, my car has the RTI (Sat Nav) system already fitted from new?

New to this board, could anybody answer this question for me, I noticed that my outside temp. is off by 3-4 degrees on my 02 S80, I was told by Volvo they can't adjust it. That just doesn't seem right to me, does anybody know if it can or can not be recalibrated?

Does anyone know how to change the switch for the sunroof? Is it diffuicult to do?
My sunroof will not go back only the back lifts, i think its the switch is there a way to test the switch?

This friday l am dropping off my V40 wagon and picking up a new S80, is there anything that l should look for or add.

I only took the regular 16" tires because l didn't want the low profile tires because they are terrible in the snow. I also took all the other options except the sport package because of the low profle tires.

I'm also picking up a V70 for the grunt work.

I have the IAQS and noticed a funky smell when the auto air cleaner function is on auto. I went to the dealer and they activated the after blow function. The interior fans come on for about 10 minutes after the engine has been shut off for 45 minutes.

This has helped a bit, but there is still a musty smell in the car. Could the IAQS filter be the culprit if its clogged up. The car only has 8k miles so I dunno if thats it or not.

It's odd, if I manually turn the IAQS button off, the smell tends to stay away, or just barely be there. I'd like to use the feature though...any input?

I have a S80 T6 2000 but the air conditioned does not cool the car very well but before recharging the gas i think that the pollen filter is very dirty because there is not enough air coming out form the system but i removed a cover on the passenger side with the hood all the way up and there is no pollen filter, any one here knows where is the pollenfilter located?

The S80 D5 is going to be launched in Thailand mid March and its only other rival in the same "luxury" market is the E220 CDi. On paper, the Merc beats the D5 in fuel consumption (all: combine, highay and city) and range. The Merc seem to be superior in just about everything on paper too. However, the merc is imported and is taxed heavily making it about 1.3 million Baht (25,000 Euro) more expensive than the locally assembled Volvo.
Apart from the price differences, are there any "positive" points which the Volvo may be superior to the Merc?

Hello, I have purchased a new headlamp glass cover to replace the one that was broken by a rock. I need some instuction on how to remove bumper cover or whatever needs to be removed in order to replace the glass. Is there anyone out there that has done this job before?

hi all i'm new to this forum i have a volvo S80 just got it two weeks ago by the way great car i love it!!!!! when driving yesterday the computer told me that the position light was out now i checked the car and all i found was the light on the lisence plate was out when i went to check it [of couse by tapping it !! ] it suddenly went on. now is this called the position light?? because the computer is still telling me that it is out

I searched around and found a couple of ways to reset it, but they didn't work.
I have a 2001 S80, everything worked perfectly until this message came up.

Does anyone have any ideas on what else I could try?

My 1998 S80 T6 makes a "graunching" noise in the power steering when on close to "full lock" .

Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this.

I have a 1999 S80 2.9 that has been experiencing a SEVERE vibration that seems to originate from the right-front end. What makes this more frustrating is that it only seems to occur when I have someone sitting in the right-fron passenger seat. I had the car in with a dealer, who had it for 10 days, and they said that everything looked okay and that it was probably something int he transmission. Of course, they told me that they would be happy to collect my $3000+ to put in a new transmission module... (by the way, this is all after they had replaced a wheel bearing, assuring me that this was the source of the problem)
