My Dealer recommended that I have him perform the $299 service on the transmission. He stated that it was "crusty" on the dipstick. Given the amount of money I was a bit reluctant to do so. He told me it would wait until the next service interval (my S80 has 47K miles on it).

My question is this: What does having them perform the transmission service do? I have heard that flushing the Volvo transmission can actually cause worse problems, so I am reluctant to do it.

Anyone have similar experience or sage advice?

I have a bad inner cv joint on my 2000 T6 with at about 89,000 miles. Before getting the replacement shaft I need to know if this thing has a viscous coupling or not? I would assume that the non-turbo would not and the more powerful T6 would but I cannot find a source to determine which is true. This is an important distinction since the driveshafts are different. Other than going to the dealer, does anyone know the answer or know how to find out.

I have a 2002 S80. Yesterday morning on my way to work, my cruise control light on the dash would light up, but when I hit the button on the steering wheel to engage it, nothing happened.

On my way home from work, the cruise control worked.

This morning, my cruise would not work again. Same problem as yesterday morning. After driving for 20 minutes, I pulled over and turned the car off and restarted it. Then the cruise worked.

Any ideas on why it's working and then not working?

Just picked up my new 440 yesterday but driving home realised that the drivers side fromt speaker does not work.

How can i check if it's the actual speaker or the stereo?

Can i change the speaker connections around at the back of the stereo and see if each one works or are they set to play on a particular side only?

It's an original volvo stereo? If the steroe's knacked do you think it would be possible to fit in a vw from my 52 plate polo into it. The stereo lights in the the polo were blue and red, am i right in presuming that they' still be the same colour if fitted in the new car (my dash is green!!)

When locking my Volvo S80 2002 with the remote control it sometimes (not every time) the passenger door lock pin pops back up after locking and the door remains unlocked. I have also had it twice on one of the rear doors. unlocking and locking repeatedly or opening and shutting the door a few times can eventually overcome this. Another thing is that I have opened the passenger door while the car has been unlocked and the interior light has not come on and I have shut and reopened the door and it comes on?!? Has anyone else had this? Any ideas? thanks for reading!

I have purchased from ebay a genuine detatchable towbar for my Volvo S80 2002 it did not come with any fitting instructions as to where to cut the bumper and what dimensions. Anyone have any ideas where I could get this info or are there any fountains of knowledge lurking around? Thanks for reading!

Hi there everybody.

My left front door lock makes horrible noises when I unlock and lock the vehicle.

Sometimes the lock does not work at all.

The local Volvo agent suggested changing the mechanism for about $500.00.

I simply wanted to know if oil, lubricant or otherwise injected through the interior lock tab would help or make it worse.

Does anybody have any suggestions about this please?

I would like to report my observed Mile Per Gallon on 2006 S80 AWD.

Based on the message from the trip computer, my average MPG is 26.4 mpg
during the past 100 days of 5345 miles, out of which is roughly 1500 miles
driven in local streets with lots of up/down hills.

The very latest long distance drive during Independence day weekend, from Nagara Falls to New York City, I made 455 miles with 15.3 gallon premium gas, which is 29.73 mpg! I had 500lb load on the car and AC was on throughout (interior temprature is 70F and 80~86F outside), average speed 75 MpH.

I cannot complain at all on the exceptional performance.

My 2006 S80 has 3700 miles on it, so far so good except for minor glitches.

Recently I noticed annoying noise from the rear-view mirror when the car is going on rough road. I doubt some loose screws might be responsible for this.

Meanwhile I found the big chunk of black plastic cover attached to the windshield right behind the rear-view mirror was loosen too. I can almost pull it out. Does anyone know what it is ?

My transmission was rebuild recently and now I got the following problem:
It drives fine in 1-3 gears but when going to 4th it goes into limp mode.
The guy that rebuild it openned it again and found a seal O ring of the 4th gear drum torn. So he replaced it and checked for leakage - it was fine. So he reinstalled it and the problem persists.
Any ideas?

I am new here. I've found some great information! My problem is this...I have an 1999 S80 T6 and I'm having alot of trouble with a leaking radiotor hose (it's leaking from both ends)

I took it to my mechanic and he wants to charge me 300.00 to replace it. I don't really feel like paying that much especially when I can pick up the part myself for about 30 bucks.

My question is this...How hard would it be for a regular guy like me to change the radiotor hose? Can I save money by doing it myself and if so...where can I go to find some instructional information for having it done?

The bonnet release mechanism in the drivers footwell seems to be stuck and I cannot release the catch to open the bonnett.

Anyone had similar experience or have any clues as to what I can do?

I have a very loud whirring noise from behind the climate controls. Dealer wants to replace the climate control unit @ £450 plus a software download.

Is this reasonable or is there a simpler fix?

Hi everyone, I've been having a look through the forum and there is some great info on here. Thanks to everyone for contributing.

I'm hoping that someone may be able to help me diagnose a problem I have with my '99 S80 2.9. About every 2-3 months or so I go to indicate left or right and nothing happens. The indicators do not work in either direction. At the same time the trip computer controls do nothing, the steering wheel mounted controls (cruise and stereo buttons) and the windscreen wash all do not work. However the wipers do carry on functioning so it's not as if everything is dead that's attached to the steering wheel and stalks. I presume that all of these things that stop working are going though some kind of control module while the wipers don't?

When these things stop working they will remain not working until I do a battery reset by removing the battery negative connector for a few seconds. This seems to reset whatever the problem is and it doesn't re-occur again for another couple of months.

Has anyone else had this problem or have any idea what may be causing it?

My 2000 S80 failed the on road fitness warrant because of a worn inner steering rod.

My mechanic removed the boot only to have rust water pouring out. The rubber boot was fine, so good in fact in completely housed the joint of the steering rod with water causing it to corrode and wear. The steering rack is also corroded and may have to be replaced or re-chromed because it is pitted with rust.

Does anyone have any ideas how water got into the rubber boot? Seems to be good enough to keep water out.

How important is it to replace or rechrome the steering rod? Can I not just re-grease it?

So my tranny went in my 02 S80 - big surprise! I read that the 03 and 04 were the same tranny, but with improvements. I had a local yard check, and they said they would be compatible, so I bought an 04 tranny with 40K, and installed it. It was by far, the most difficult tranny swap I ever have done. Now, I have communication problems, and when I took it to a local dealer for software upgrades, they say the tranny is not compatible! GREAT! So now I'm looking at swapping it out again. Anyone know if the 04 tranny can be 'modified' someway to run in my 02?

Hey everyone. I need help. I replaced the transmission in my 2002 S80. Once done, the car won't start. Actually, it will start intermittently, and run great, but when I shut it off, it won't start again. I get a code PO355, crank position sensor circuit bad. The problem is, I'm not sure where the crank sensor is. I went to the dealer, they sold me the pulse sensor (I believe also called the RPM sensor), which is mounted above the flywheel. That didn't help - same code. Now I'm wondering, am I replacing the correct sensor. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

2000 S80 T6 has a small blue 2 wire and a large gray connector comming out of the main harness near the fuse panel in the trunk (left side).
Could this be the connection for a CD Changer? If so, how does this impact my connecting an iPod adapter?

I bought a used keyless remote for our 2002 Volvo S80 and was unable to program it. I took it to a dealer and was told I needed a 16-digit PIN to program the remote. The remote did not come with a 16-digit pin and the seller does not have it. Does anyone know a way I can program the remote? Is the 16-digit PIN required for the dealer or anyone else to program the remote?

99 S80. Need help. Odometer stopped working- at least I think it did as it doesn't light up. All other dash lights work fine. manual doesn't show a seperate fuse. Anyone have a clue?

I have a 99 S80 T6 and the radiator cooling fan doesn't run after the engine has stopped. It now only runs when the engine is running whereas it used to always run for around 5 minutes once the engine stopped. Same journey length, ambient temp etc. Any ideas?

I've recently have had trouble with my transmission. The car is fine shifting from park to reverse but when I shift the transmission down to Drive, the car lurches and I cannot shift cleanly. It usually takes a while for the car to punch to Drive (the electronic gauge under the speedometer will scramble like it doesn't know where the gear is at). This is annoying and I am wondering what on earth is going on.

I have read this car in this year has a load of problems but other than the fact that I had the alternator replaced at 75K and a new battery at 85K, I am quite grateful for the fact that there are no other problems. No mysterious ghost messages and such.

This car is approaching 100K. Though I put a lot of miles on this car per year, I do not believe that I have abused this car plus I do regularly scheduled maintenance AND preventive maintenance at my own cost!

I am a volvo s80 driver in Evanston IL where we just got hit with some heat. This is my firs full summer with the car and I started experiencing a problem with the fan motor after turning hte car off. I can understand the motor of the fan going for a few minutes after the car is sshut off especially after using the a/c for an extended time, but the fan has stayed on for 2.5 hours and even when i drove and didn't use the a/c. No indicator lights have appeared and the temp gage is reading normal. The car was just in the shop for failure to start (battery was replaced) but the first failure was the morning after I first had the problem with the fan. Any thoughts????????

Hi I have had the bulb failure position light warning for months now, i have replaced every bulb on the exterior (headlights, rear lights, side lights etc) that was out and they are all on and the message wont go away. any ideas?

I have been a S80 and first time Volvo owner for 3 months. So far I have read on several S80 forums with regards to the S80 and Volvos reliablity and cost of maintenance. There are some good comments and alot of negative comments.

I own a 2001 S80 and recently it seemed to be running rough. Last week it stalled at an intersection and it had to be towed. Seems the "Mass air sensor had to be relplaced and the 2001 S80 had a recall for the throttle problems. Total cost was $105.00 plus the tow bill. If there is anyone who can assit me in getting information on the dash read-out for things like instant MPG, average MPG, remaining fuel. The displays are incorrect 99 % of the time. Thanks

Am I looking at the stereo failure or simple loose wire?

The car had the stereo replaced before i got the car 2 months ago and was working OK.

Can someone please explain something to me.. On warm days my 01 T-6 will intermittently turn on the blower fan. This happens sometimes when I exit the car (fan stays on)
or when I approach the car and un-lock. Really no rhyme or reason to when it decides to do this....Is this some kind of "safety\ comfort" perk with this vehicle, or something else?
I have ran through the owners manual and found nothing about this....anybody care to take a stab at this...

I am new here, so if this is not the right place to post this, please let me know. I have a 1994 850 Turbo that runs and looks liek a beauty until now. She has about 210K miles on her. When I went out to my car to go to work today, I tried starting with no luck. The engine will crank but, something seems to not be igniting the final push. I checked all relays and switches and double checked the battery, but they are all ok. I am going to wait until it is dark to check for sparks from the plugs. There is no fuel on the ground and there seems to be pressure in all of the lines. If none of that works, I am going to assume it is a faulty fuel pump or clogged fuel filter. Any ideas on anything else it may be or that I should check for? PS the car has been sitting for about a week on an incline.

Had many problems over the years with 1999 S80 T6 including the replacement of ETM at my expense.
Really would like to retain thes sharp car but the samll stuff getting to be a pain.
Problem started today when first the turn signals stopped operating, then a little later the clock, now the door locks and window on driver side have quit.
Does anyone have any ideas or assistance please....

I have a 2004 S80 premier that has a TDMA cell phone that i can not activate. I need to know where the phone is located and who makes it so i can try to find a replacement. I am not a big fan of blue tooth so that is not a great option. Any one have any ideas or information??

got a 2002 d5. Every time i go over a bump (speed bump etc) i get a short thumping noise somewhere from the rear. seems to be rear left. Sounds as if the exhaust is clanging against the mounts, dont know if it is the exhaust. Could it be something more? My car is covered by a 2 year warranty that will replace anything but interior wear n tear and tyres so im covered. Please let me know what i should get checked out.

I just bought my wife a 2000 s80 t6 and the ac blows cold for a few minutes then it gets warm. It was suggested that I add a can of coolant but I don't know where to add. There is a nipple on the passenger side of the front of the car just behind the headlamp. That nipple is quite large compared to my 93 940 so I was wondering if this is the low pressure side? My guages have a coupler that fits but it is on the high pressure guage, it is the three hose (blue, yellow, red) and two guage style. Any help would be most appreciated.

I am redoing the interior of my S80 and am looking for these little plastic holders which are used to hold the interior components to the frame, (sort of like little plastic pins.) I have found these at a local autoparts place but they are too small in diameter for the Volvo.

If anyone can tell me what they are called and maybe where to find them I would appreciate it.
