Hi. I have a 199 Volvo S80 and had the transmission service required light come on. I had the transmission service done at a repair shop, but the Transmission service required error message in the text window is still on. How do I reset or clear the messages in the text window area so it does not come up every time I start the car?

hi i posted this in general and got no reply.....Hello Wonderful Volvo owners....I heard a clicking coming from the right side of the engine compartment and then my alarm system maintenance indicator came on.......I just wanted to know if this is common....Thanks

I had a towing company come and pick up my s80 t6 and bring it to the volvo dealership.
It was there for three days the couldn't figure it out..the fourth morning they called me and told me the car was ready.
It turns out it was the ETM (throttle body... ) It was a recall so no money involved. AWESOME !!! but however in there three days of trying to figure out the problem they changed the spark plugs. They never asked me if they could do that and never got any authorization from me. The plugs cost 46.00 and the labour was 104.00.
I brought this to the service managers attention. they agreed not to do any work until I authorized it and yet they did anyway.
They, without any problem took off the labour for the spark plug installation.
It pays to make the dealership adhere to what you originally agree upon.
They also gave me a list of other things that were wrong with my car. All stuff I can do myself. Already ordered the parts

About the recall. I called this dealership before I bought the car and they looked up the vin# and told me all the recalls had been done on the car. Wierd.

I was wrong in every think that I wrotte done in my last topic. I went with the car to a volvo shop repair and they teste it with the computer so is show two faults: brake pedal sensor and Traction control module. So I dont understend what is the conection of the car reaction ( rotation goes up and down, black smoke, big fuel consum) and these two faults. In my opinion could be somethink regarding the air flow which may be stoled by the brake sistem. Please somebody help me. Thanks

Has anyone had the message "transmission fix next service" ? Is it serious? Just bought this car and have nightmares about all the gremlins I have heard about this model. Any insight or words or confidence would be great.

How can I look and see what color my tag is on the ETM? My friend said he got the computer service done for free on the car I just bought, but I don't know if that means they just upgraded the software or left the crappy ETM in there. Where can I look and see? thanks once again!

The car will start up without issues every now and then. Usually, I crank it but it doesn't start. I can do this many times without it starting. About the time I start thinking about finding my AAA car, I turn the key and it starts up without a problem. I do have a code that comes up on the obd2 scanner of P1550. My ABS light has been on for a long time too and the brake light comes on sometimes. Has anyone out there had this problem? I changed the spark plugs but I don't think it helped the situation. When this thing does finally start, it runs like the wind!

hi. I have a 2000 Volvo S80 T6. Car uses too much fuel. Computer says its 20 liters/100 km. i know it's 2.8 turbo but still it shouldn't be using that much. Any suggestions???

Hi there everyone this is my first time on this site so bear with me! I've just had my fingers badly burnt with my 51 plate BMW 320td SE Compact - turbo went twice at a cost of £1200 and I'm putting it up for sale next week for £6k to pay off the credit card bill. Ive done some poking around and it seems I can get myself into a 2.5 diesel S80 Auto with leather for £3-3.5k on a T/V/W plate with 100-120k on the clock, I've always liked the modern shaped volvos (nearly bought an 02 S60 when I bought the beemer) and was just wondering what the potential pitfalls are from buying an S80 at this age, as they seem to be very solid cruisers with an excellent interior, which would be perfect for the kind of daily motorway grind I do, so with that in mind...

1: What kind of mpg could I expect? (Was getting 40-44 from the BMW)
2: Are there any weak points that cost a fortune to fix? (I've heard the auto gearbox can be a problem)
3: Whats the service intervals and how expensive are they?
4: Are Volvo main dealers con artists like BMW ones?
5: Whats the performance/ride/handling like from the 2.5 D 5 cylinder?
6: Any common things I should look for

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, as the only diesel autos with leather I can think of in that price range is a 406 Executive/old Audi A4/6 and the S80 seems like a far more 'special' car to me

Now I went with the car to volvo shop they test the car and is sow two faults, brake pedal sensors and dtc module. Can be these faults the couse of problem? I jast want to remaind you guys that when I reset the computer by unplug the batery for 10 km the car is going well (exept big petrol consum all the time 99.9), but then is start with black smoke and very bad rotation when the car is stationary, and also is loke like lose of power intensity. thank you.

Hello - Took a nice little drive from VA to NH, no worries on the trip up. Coming home is a different story. Started out at -9 degree F in NH at 9AM and put some hardcore miles under me at normal Volvo speeds (80++). Normal, right? Anyway hear a dull thud and all the lights came on. I spent a good 2hours on the side of I-81 in PA.

Don Beyer Volvo of Winchester suggests it is toast. Says that this interference engine is wound so tight for performance that at those speeds the T-belt breaking destroyed the valves and most likely some of the pistons. They fast quoted me $11K for engine replacement. It is a been a somewhat reliable car (started at -9 F in NH) Excellent performance, you truly do get what you pay for. I may be paddling up that river in Egypt known as The Nile (READ: DENIAL) but I just can't seem to come to terms with the fact that a $400 T-Belt job would have saved me $11K. It seems like our Swedish friends would have designed something a little better and the valves would sheer and the cam stop turning the pistons to protect the BIG stuff.

I checked out the car and drove it. Runs great, everything looks awesome. Had the oil leak and computer fixed, and it also seems that the timing belt is real new. Is the timing belt located on the left side of the engine? If so that belt looks new/good condition. Even though this is not the car, is the timing belt located on the left of this picture? http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff149/carmod/IMG_2250.jpg A few inches to the left of the red oil/thing. Otherwise my question is, what do I do next? The seller said everything has just been changed oil etc etc, obviously ill have my mechanic look at it but otherwise, do I need anything? should i put a new air filter in the car? Should i put a cleaner into the tank to just clean it out? What do I need to do to insure a great start is what I am really asking. Thank you and I appreciate all the help this forum has givin me. One of my friends buddies has a 1999 S80 T6 with 63 thousand miles on it. He is moving away so he said he would sell me the car just to make some extra $$ for 5 thousand bucks. It just had the oil leak fixed which was pretty pricey and the computer was also just replaced. Beyond that I haven't seen any paperwork on what else has been done but hopefully beyond that it should be alright. My question is, should I buy this car? I can't see myself letting a high end volvo go for 5 grand with only 60K on her. I have read about the timing belt issue and this concerns me. I also have read alot of reviews saying how this car is a huge headache etc etc. But the other half says its an awesome car. I do cross country driving year round, so a reliable car is obviously essential...more so than a town car, I could be in the middle of kansas for all I know... Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I have a 2004 S80 and got a flat right rear tire yesterday evening. When I went to change it today, I followed the normal procedure. Once I got all the lug nuts removed and tried to pull off the tire, the tire will not come off as if it is locked into place. It won't budge at all. Is there some sort of lock or security feature that releases the tire? Any help is most appreciated. Thanks.

Just bought my daughter a 2001 S80 2.9 and have had it three days. Today she came home after driving appx 30mins and when she shut off the car, the radiator fan continued to run for another 10mins, even though the car was off??

Anyone ever hear of this? If so - is this *normal*?

I have owned 3 S80's over the past 6 years. Now I have come to replace my current car and I cannot have TV as I have had before. All other manufacturers are offering digital TV now. Why have Volvo stopped it alltogether

I forgot to tell that they check up the presure of the furl and it is very hogh 55. HELP.

The large black plastic under engine cover has always been a PITA to me especially when serviciing (oil/filter change)..
I have'nt seen an American made vehicle with this, (possible the newer ones) and wondering is it absolutely necessary to cover this area...I understand the protection it affords, but is all the trouble worth the effort..??
Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions, I'd appreciate...Thank You

I have a 4 year old S80. Rescently I've had a delay in the gears engaging and then suddenly it slaps into gear with great force. This has been followed by the Transmission Service Urgentlu Required light coming on and now it's like the clutch is slipping (its an auto by the way)

I took it to an independant garage who tell me it needs a new transmission, and its a specialist unit which will cost at least $2,000 + labor. I don't think it is this a) I don't think it is the transmission, its supposedly a GM box and one of volvos most reliable units. and b. the problem is substantially worse when its cold.

I'm wondering if its incorrect transmission fluid at the last service??? I did read on another posting that the S80 can be very tempremental to this. It seems coincidental that it started to happen shortly after the transmission fluid was topped up. I'm also wondering if I need a new clutch.

Any ideas?

I just purchased my second used Volvo. The first a 2001 S60, now a 2004 S80. I took both to the dealer for an oil change (and to have them look over the car) after purchase. Both times the dealer has said that I need new Motor Mounts (to the tune of $300). While sitting in the waiting room, I heard the Service guy tell two other people that they also need new Motor Mounts.

Is this a very common problem?

How difficult is it to replace them on your own?

I own a 1999 S80 2.9 and a few weeks ago my coolant warning light started coming on. I have had to re-fill every two weeks or so since. Now I have a major leak beneath my driver's seat floormat. I have been told it may be a "feeder line" problem.

I don't know much about cars. Does anyone know what the problem may be, how serious it is, and how much it might cost to fix. Thank you.

s80 2.5 diesel (europe) 1999

Months After haveing my oil changed in an official Volvo Workshop, I noticed the oil level was too high.
There is a sticker just by the oil refill hole (excuse me for my english) telling that exhaust system might be damaged by oil over maximum level.

My car begun throwing lots of white smoke through the exhaust (at any time and rpm) and it also lost lots of power.
i took my car to Volvo's official Workshop and they told me, by reading the codes, that it was something related with the turbocharger valve (I believe it is the bypass valve that
bypasses the turbo when rpm are too high) (wastegate?) and that it had nothing to do with the oil level above the MAX level. I do not know the DTC number.

The invoice for replacing the Turbo (as suggested by Volvo) was very-very high so I took my car to a turbocharger specialist independent workshop...
once the tubo was dismtantled and inspected I was told that my turbo was OK.

So now they are trying to find out what happens to the car but I would like to find out by myself...
has anybody experienced something similar (white smoke/ lack of power)???

I recently purchased a 2001 S80 (80K miles). Shortly after the transmission warning light came on. I took it to a shop that specializes in Saabs/Volvos. They said this transmission has an internal defect that burns out solenoids and the transmission will have to be replaced with a rebuilt unit. If I decide to fix it, it will ruin a solenoid again. I then took it to a reputable transmission shop. they said nonsense that it is a GM box and if they rebuild it, it will be fine. Please - anyone know anything?

Anyone retro fitted a trip/indicator stalk to an S80 my2000.
I understand a software upgrade is needed, when I fitted one my headlights were on constantly also the read button didn't function and nothing else worked correctly!
Is it just the software?

I own a 1999 S 80 volvo with so many problems. First thinks is that the engine was changed, with other one which has just 60.000 km. I have two messages DTSC service required, transmission service required. Ok but the problem is when I start the engine, consum is to big instant like 99,9, and average is 25l/100 km, and after 10 km of driving the rotation of engine is going down like 500 rot/min,acceleration is losting power, and all the gouge lights are changing the intensity, and the engine is going bad.
Also someting important, when the engine is starting to do like that is coming on the message, emission sistem service requires.
And the last important think if I keep my car for few days without moving the BATTERY Gat flat (and is new).

Seems I've read about this a while back, but do not remember any answer..
Am trying to find where I can purchase the Eyelet Hook that screws into the front bumper whenever a tow is necessary...I don't know if thats what they call it...Am missing mine and would appreciate info as to where I may buy...Thanks

Hi, I bought a 2004 Volvo S80 last year and after about 60 days I noticed a rattle noise (almost like I need shocks/struts) under the front end on bumpy roads, parking lots, etc. I have taken this problem to the Volvo dealer in town and after an entire day, they say they cannot hear it. It's worse and it's a shame to have such a beautiful car make such an awful noise! Any suggestions as to what it could be?

My 2003 S80 AC control went out. Dealer says I need a new $728 control module - the center console control panel. In estimating the cost he includes time for updating software. Can someone help me understand just what needs updating and how long the software update should take?

My car would not start yesterday. I got two messages in the message center one was... Abs brakes needs service. the other was immobilizer see manual. The 2nd message was gone in one or two cranks of the car.
This morning I tried to boost the car . The abs message was gone but the car would still not start. It sounds like it is about to start but it just won't get there.
The car is not out of gas it has 3/4 of a tank in it.
Car has been running great and have had no problems with it up until I wanted to drive it yesterday. It is and all of a sudden thing. I drove it home from Church and then picked my son's friend and then went to take him home later and that was when it did not want to start.

Could this still be a battery issue.
Could an ABS issue stop a car from starting
If the abs will stop a car from running could a badly warped rotor have damaged a wheel sensor. In my previous post I mentioned I replaced the front rotors and pads about two days before any of this had happened.

Hi First time on the forum.
I have a 2000 Volvo S80 T6 that I replaced the front brake pads and rotors on two days ago. The right side had a badly warped rotor. and I felt the pedal was getting rather low.
The car has been running fine until today.
It wont start and in the message center at the left of the instrument cluster is says abs need servicing imediately.
At one point it said immobization ... ( the anti theft thing that has to do with the key) but that went away after just a couple of trys to get the car started.
I have read that it may be the abs module. If it were the abs module wouldn't the car still be able to run. I've heard you can still drive your car without the abs module.
My other thought with the added message I saw was that possibly the battery was getting weak and causing the electronics to not let the car start. could I have done something to affect the wheel sensors I don't even know where they are exactly located and I wouldn't know even if I were looking at them.

Can anyone offer any help?

Tech, used your instructions to replace my brake booster. Excellent instructions, it has been replaced, however I do not know how to adjust my brake light switch. My brake lights are on all the time.

I have 2004 S80 Premier and it came with a TDMA cell phone installed. They don’t use TDMA in the states and I want to convert it to GSM. Any one know what it will take?

Does anyone know if there are supposed to be lights on the cruise /audio swithces on the steering wheel on a 1999 . i find it hard to set cruise at night. seeing the rest of the car is like a christmas tree , i assume they should light up. If yes does anyone know how to change globes? will this bugger up the airbag?

I have a 2000 volvo s80 t6 my car has a ton of DTC'S. The only one of them that has anything to do with boost is a p0234 its something about the boost control solinoid i cleaned the solinoid out while the car was running with the hoses unconnected. this did not work i still dont have any boost i dont know mucha bout this code or turbo's or wats goin on. if someone could guide me with some major help id really appreciate it

Is there an easy way of taking the S80 grill off? I want to paint it black, but still can't find any instructions that doesn't involve removing the front bumper bar.

Additionally what have people used to paint the grill? I was thinking of actually cutting the metal bits off and then installing mesh in place?
