I have a very annoying noise on my 2000 S70 T5 Manual shift - the closest I could describe it as is a metallic "chirp". It happens when you transition between power on and coasting or vice versa. It is most noticeable when shifting between low gears but also happens in higher gears. It is not actually to do with the gear shift I think because I can get it when simply going from foot on the gas to foot off the gas without any gear shift.

Driving me crazy. 2 dealers have no clue. Replaced various things to no effect. I think I've heard other Volvos with a similar chirp.

I am currently having an intermittant starting problem. The engines sometimes turns over, tries to start but immediately dies. The engine management light illuminates but as yet I haven't interrigated it to see what it says.

Any ideas anyone for me to start some investigation.

Hello, I recently purchased a used 1998 V70 wagon in good condition, with the following problems:

The car was e-tested and it passed with flying colours, however, the Emission System Service light is always on. Does it need resetting or do i need to have the car diagnosed for $100 from a volvo dealer?

The other thing is that I have noticed a drop of oil every other day on my driveway, and this seems to be coming from a transmission seal just above the four bolts that hold the oilpan.

Should it be replaced, or does one live with the slow drip?

just wondering if any of you could help me, i have recently brought a late shape v70 t5 1000, miler goes really well, anyway the abs/ t/control & eminisions warning lights keep comming on, if i disconnect the battery, switch on the ign to drain any static electricty out of the pcb, and then re-connect the battery, all is well for about one to two weeks, then they start comming on again.(i just think that maybe the pcb or whatever is building up static, over a period of time, then sending out the wrong info. I'ts driving me nuts, i now it can't be anything much, as everything works fine, when the lights are out. (sorry gone on a bit there)

I have had a 98 s70 for 4 years. It currently has 108K. In last 6 months ABS have gone, 2 sensers, (its in the shop tonite for the second one at $600.00!), motor in window, brakes, and now in additon to sensor, coolant lite is on and off. (Could be related to sensor being replaced). Is this worth keeping? I am the second owner. I like the car, now that a recall took care of all my bulbs burning out, but, is this the beginning of the end. I had planned to kep it two more years.

My compressor cuts on and off every five seconds, and its not cooling like it should.
I was told by a dealer that there is a leak, and therefore the compressor can't build up pressure, so it turns on and off.

Anyone with any knowledge of this and the best way to solve the issue?

I'm having a problem with my V70 D5. Over the last few weeks hot starting has become worse and worse until now it won't start when hot. Cold starting isn't a problem and the car will bump start (hill start) when hot. The dealer is telling me that the injectors are shot and are draining too much fuel away; I think this is bol---ks. Any ideas???

I have a 1999 S70 GLT with 105k miles, and my ETC light has been on for the last 10,000 miles or more. I have had no stalling or other operating problems. My regular independent shop ran codes, cleaned the throttle body and cleared the code, but it triggered again. They recommended a software reprogram a the dealer, stating that there's a good chance that will solve the problem (they do not do this themselves). Another shop advised me that the only solution is to replace the throttle body (they are independent, but can do the replacement and the download). I'm trying to figure out if its worth the risk of spending the money to do a reprogram only. Any thoughts on this? Thanks everyone. - Jim.

I have a strange issue on my 1998 Volvo S70. The car likes to stall from time to time. It also has a problem with the windows, they stop working, except after it does the stall thing then they work for a little while. I also notice that the external temperature gauge sarts rising. After it stalls out a bunch it will start running again and the windows start working.

The car has close to 100K on it and I have just recently dumped a ton of money in to it (timing belt @ 70K, replaced engine mount @80K, new drive shafts and rotors @85K) so I would like to keep her for at least another 60K but I am afraid of dumping another $1,000.00 trying to hunt a ghost. Let me know if any of you have any thoughts.

It seems my car is in grave danger,

My car was in a body shop (for six weeks!) being repaired and when I got it back a day later all these problems started.

It seems to root from the exhaust system being damaged in the accident. The body shop could not get the car to start (I don't want to know what they did under my hood, but I am extremely TICKED off that some BODYMAN was tinkering with my engine! ) and were tinkering under the hood.

I think that they damaged my computer when they jump started my car, as the radio does not work any more and it won't accept the programming code, plus after a trip on the highway the ETS light came on and the RPM's are irratic.

I need to prove to my insurance company that these damages were done while the car was out of my hands. Does anyone know if VOLVO can print a report from my car computer to back up these problems? Plus I need to prove that the exhaust was damage in the accident too.

I only take my car to VOLVO certified mechanics and now some kid has caused me a whole lot of headaches and damaged my car!!!!

I was just sitting at a red light and WHAMO, I was rear ended by a one ton dually who happens to be from out of province so I must pay for all the damages up front and fight to get my money back. What a HASSLE!

Just looked at a V70 that has 180K km on the clock. Service history is up to date and the car is straight and in good condition. Interior is great and engine is willing. Are the km's to high? What are the problems I may look forward to?

Engine was replace under warranty @ 40,000 miles. Has been flawless until now. With 65,000 miles on it, it has a problem with a rough cold idle. At first start of the day the idle is rough and choppy. Once the engine has warmed up, the idle is fine. Any ideas? (throttle body has been cleaned since this problem started & I use high octane gas)

My hood release only releases the right side, unless I have someone pull up on the left side while I pull the hood release. This is fine as long as there are two people. I applied lubricant to the release mechanism and it looks fine. Any suggestions. Is there an adjustment.???

I have a 1998 S70 with a single cd player. I was wondering if any one knew where the port to plug in a cd changer is? I heard it was in the trunk, but I am unable to find it. I am looking to hook my ipod up using an interface, so if anyone also has any suggestions, let me know! Thanks!

I was told by a dealer never to change the tranny fluid in a V70 (mine is 2000 year model).
This sounds odd to me, as all of my other vehicles require a periodic tranny flush. Any feedback on this?

My S70 T5 that normally starts very easily whether cold or hot, started giving me problems when cold.

I noticed that even when the engine was cold, the water temperature guage would show that the engine was over heating.

I had a diagnostic unit plugged in to check for the error. The only error reported was that the cold start valve was faulty. This did not sound right to me - especially as the temperature guage was not working correctly.

To cut a long story short, the problem was the temperature sensor that is located just below the radiator hose outlet from the engine to the radiator. I believe there are 2 sensors on the engine.

The sensor had failed and the signal to the engine management system was that the engines was hot and so the cold start function did not operate.

After changing the sensor (or temperature switch as some people call it), the starting problem went away and the temperature guage indicated correctly.

I am new to this forum, and a member of the UK Volvo Owners Club.

I am the owner of a 1999 V70 2.0 litre automatic.

I am hoping that someone may know what has happened to my car. The other day, it started making a strange judder on right hand turns, almost as though a tyre was flat. Then today, it was really bad and when I stopped, there was a dull thud and then no gears at all. Now when you try and put it into gear (forwards or reverse) it makes a noise like a manual gearbox does when it's not quite in gear. There is no drive at all.

The car is now waiting outside the local dealers and I don't want to get done for a replacement gearbox if it is something else.

I thought maybe a belt, but they all seem to be there, then I thought maybe the diff has gone, but would that stop me putting it into gear. The Haynes manual refers you to the dealer because apparently the gearbox faults can all be read on VADIS, so it wasn't a lot of use.

In short, I haven't got a clue. Any advice gratefuly received.

I just picked up some Autolite Platinum plugs, I don't know if they are gapped for the volvo or not. They are at .045" (pretty large!!). What should the gaps be on a Volvo s70GLT (turbo)? I read somewhere that .025" was it (pretty small!!).

Could one of our experts please let me know what the correct torque setting (Nm) is for the wheel bolts on an 1999 S7 T5 is please. I cannot locate it in the owner's manual.

Just replaced left rear taillight and right rear brake light after the check light warning came on. Now none of the brake lights work - not event the rear window light. What the heck?

Our family has decided to get into the Volvo scene. We just bought a 1999 Volvo S70 GLT with 142,000 miles on it. Seems to run pretty good, I have noticed a slight bit of vibration thru the accelerator pedal when I first press down on it, other than that it runs great.

Any suggestions on the first things I need to do with the S70? No record of the last timing belt change, no maintenance records, etc.

I want to purchase a new remote for my 1999-S70. There are several codes on the back of mine, one of which, I assume will tell me whether it is compatable/programmable for my year/make/model. Would anyone know which code one the back will ensure compatability? Thank you

On starting my Volvo, the fan runs for a second, cuts off and I get the blinking LEDs on the AC Panel.

I see from previous posts that this is probably the blower that is drawing to many amps and needs to be replaced.

So, how hard is it to replace the blower motor? In my old Chevy it was a piece of cake....

Hi all, first post here.
I've got a 1998 S70 GLT that's smoking some, along with some other issues I'm in the process of addressing. If any of you can answer my questons, I'd be grateful.

1) What is the bore/stroke of the engine (2.4L I5)

2) What is the Compression Ratio of the engine? I saw on another website that it was "10.3:1", but I find that really high for a turbocharged engine.

3) Where does the intercooler sit? It looks like the IC piping leads up in front of the radiator - is it a FMIC hiding in there somewhere?

4) There is a small hose near the throttle body that looks to attach to a solenoid and recirculate back into the intake piping. That hose is split open. What is it?

I appreciate any input you guys can offer.

Just purchased a used v70 GLT and it has a cargo cover. The previous owner never used it.

Now it won't retract and after taking off the endcaps there was some broken plastic pieces...

Any ideas on how to repair?

How much mileage can a volvo car go for in it's life time?

I just bought a 98 S70 non-turbo does anyone in the u.s. make a perfomance exaust system for this car.

Anyone know if the '97 type 850 sedan gas trunk strut would work on a 1999 S70? They seem like similar cars, but I see big price difference!! Also, I noticed that on one website the two struts in the back of the S70 were two different part numbers, aren't they the same?

New proud Volvo S70 T5 Owner here fellas. I bought the car knowing that the Passenger Power Window is not working and the A/C is not blowing cold. Are these common problems on the S70 just wondering where to start? I know I can't afford to take it to a Volvo Dealer and we are having a hot summer. Thanks in advance.

Hi, has anyone had aircon problems with a V70 (old model)? Ours had a coouple of rapid gas top-ups to no avail before it was diagnosed with a broken evaporator. This is just about the most expensive part that can go wrong since it is really hard to get at, requiring a full dashboard removal. Even after replacing the unit the aircon system does not work unless the temperature is well below 20C. Our Volvo main dealer took £100 to tell us they don't know what the problem is or how it could be fixed, but that if it is the condenser then that's about £700 to fix. Has anyone else had issues which sound failiar and how did you fix them?

help when i lock my v70 with key or remote the car unlocks its self
the door butons just pop back up .iocal volvo dealer says volvo has reported
fault with motors on some models but would only pay part of cost which will
cost £400-£600 depending on how many motors are needed.

in the past i have owned both a 240 (156000 ml) and a fantastic 740(185000mls)
with no problems worth talking about.
v70 (85000mls)1999 nothing but problems auto box failed at 82000mls a week afteri bought it cost dealer £2500. which then i had told them where to stick
there v70. think throtel body is next to go do you think i should give up on volvo and buy a skoda , even a old one would be better :

Anybody have any similar problem and want to share. My v70 1998 left rear passenger side door lock would not unlock either with key or remote. Every door work fine except that one (left rear passenger door)

This one particular door (left rear passenger) will lock but not unlock. This happen when my daughter pull the door handle same time i push the remote to unlock hte car. After that it will lock but no unlock.. Any help or suggesstion would be great.

I'm looking for a used V70 (my 745 is feeling lonely), and will be looking for one around 1998 to 2001. This covers the transition between the old and new style models, together with the changes in all the engine types. I have set my sights on a 170 Hp non-turbo or a turbo diesel.
Does anyone have a chart with the various engine types, as it seems to be a confusing nightmare? Some of the Volvo brochures available on line have numbers, but some do not. (I've already me one dealer who tried to sell me a 140 as a 170.)

This has only started in the last couple of days. Everytime i drive my car, when i switch off the engine my fan comes on? I can leave the car to get cold, start it for a second, and switch it of and hey presto the fan starts again, runs for about four minutes then stops. So whether the car has run a distance or just been switched on and off the fan comes on whenever i switch off......? confusing

A fellow V70 owner hear (99) and I've got a little problem.

I have the drivers rear door set on child lock (can't open it from the inside) the problem is that the door will no longer open from the outside either!

Any ideas? Is it a security system malfunction? The doors unlock and all the other doors function.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.!

Need to purchase a new set of keys for a 1999 S70-Mine only has valet keys. Is there a way to know that I am being charged a reasonable price, or is there an on-line/less expensive alternative in re: cost of key and programming? Why do they have to be programmed? Thank you in advance.
