I've just noticed a fluid leak, dripping off of the frame insdide the right front wheel of our 2000 V70XC. It looks like it might be hydraulic or brake fluid, but the master cyluinder brake reservoir looks fine. Maybe fluid from a shock or strut??? Maybe it's coolant, but that reservoir is right at the "low" point (and the car's cold and it was in the 30s last night). It's a clean, clear (or slightly colored), slightly oily fluid. I've probably got a trip to the dealer to check out a clunk in the transmission (identical to symptoms on "kem041175's" 2000 V70 AWD: the forum suggests to get some software updated and have the oil & filter changed -- "Tech" came up with the solution). Anybody got any ideas???? This may be a brand new leak and the reservoir just hasn't gone down yet. I'll watch it.

Does anyone know the location (front,back of engine, left, right side of engine compartment, connected to?? for the flame trap on the 2000 S-70 GLT 2WD? Mine is pushing 70k mi and it's time to renew anything not clean. I've been religious about oil changes as turbos are not cheap. Anything particular to be aware of on this service?

My father is selling his 94 850 T5R (that he bought off me), and is going to look at a 98 V70 R wagon / estate on saturday. As I said it's the 98 U.K. model with 135000 miles.
He's asked if I could post on here to ask what he should look out for / listen for. Also, what sort of equipment he should expect to find in there, and what differences, apart from a few more donkeys, set it aside from the V70 T5?

Any replies will be greatly appreciated.

My 1999 S70 has started making a strange noise, best described as a high-pitched moan from under the hood. I thought it may be the power steering, but I checked the fluid which is OK.

Any suggestions?

Having a problem with a 1998 Volvo V70 wagon -- at highway speed, the "hesitates, stumbles, or stutters" a few times -- as if it suddenly isn't getting enough fuel. No code is showing up in the computer. I have had 4 mechanics look at the car & try several fixes (e.g., new coil) and even had the 60K Mile Service redone. There was some oil in the spark plug housing at one point, and this was supposedly fixed. I have even tried putting in Fuel Injector Cleaner. Any ideas would be much appreciated

Checked Evap Value (emission control) because a missing gas cap can cause this code to activate in computer
Checked for bad O2 Sensor
Coil Arching (fires the plugs)?  Tried new coil
Checked Spark Plugs Bad?  Did complete 60K mile service
Later, Volvo found oil in housing for spark plugs; fixed ring / seal & replaced plugs and wires again
Checked battery ground wire
Put Fuel Injector Cleaner in gas tank

Any suggestions on other areas to check? Thanks.

 
 

I just got a remote programmed that I bought off of ebay. They charged me over $91.00!!!!! Is this par for programming? That just seems really high to me. They charged me 46.00 for software and 45.00 for 30-min labor (they said that is how long it takes to download). Please let me know if this is a fair price or not because they will call me this week and ask me to tell them what an excellent job they did...

I have a V70 AWD from 2000, with automatic transmission. When the car is running uphill on high gear,low RPM, and shifts to a lower gear, a quite hard gear-shift takes place. I can hear a "dunk" sound in the car.
This also happends sometimes when it shift from a lower gear to a higher gear, like after i have performed a "kickdown", and let go of the accelerator.
Is it something wrong with my transmission, is this normal in a V70 AWD?

Any comments on this?

I'm replacing the radiator on a 99 V70xc and trying to figure out the best removal method. I tried removing the upper rad support piece but the bolts are too tight to get to. It looks like I can drop the radiator down but am not sure if i should remove it from the trans cooler (pretty sure that's it and not the A/C) or just disconnect the trans hoses. Anyone have any thoughts?

Hi everyone, this is my first post. I have a 98 V70 GLT with a single disk. Somehow I ejected a CD and now the plaayer will not allow me to insert another CD. Since I rarely use the CD player I'm mystified by this problem. Does anyone know how I might be able to fix this without buying a new unit? Thanks!

I have a 98 s70 and was looking to replace my old stock unit (tape deck) with an alpine deck. I heard that it might be hard to install is there anything special i need besides the deck and the wiring cables to install the deck?

Hello everyone. I have 98 S70 with 145,000 miles on it. The car is in fairly good shape, however, I'm trying to decide how expensive "Volvo for Life" is going to be. I need a ABS module and O2 sensors. Should I continue to feed the beast or move on to something else?

Hello all, my 1998 S70's Check engine light lit up and the code say's P0410 (secondary Air Pump). My research shows there are three pieces to be worried about. The first is the relay, then the switch, then the pump. Is there a way to test the pump before spending the $300 on a new one? Thanks.

When trying to start the car, most times the starter will engage but doesn't roll engine over. You hear it spinning. Some times it will start, but sounds like it is "flooded" and runs rough for a second . If you wait a momemt or "wiggle" the shift lever it will start. Any ideas?

Hi I have the following problem:

When I try to fill up my gas tank, after a couple of seconds the fuels just start coming out. Have anyone had this problem and knows how it could be fixed.

My guesses are some kind of vent is stuck, but it could something more major in the evaporative control system.


I did also felt that some pressure is building up inside the gas tank when I open the cap.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

I run a V70R (2WD) and my partner runs an 850 estate. We have moved to the country (rural Aberdeenshire) and we will definately get bad weather - snow and ice. I've thought of changing her 850 for a V70 4x4 but it seems a little bit drastic to cover the three or four weeks of the year when the weather might be really bad.

I'm looking at converting both the V70 and 850 to LPG but want to be sure I'm keeping them both for the long haul before splashing out. I'm happy to simply leave the V70R in the drive when the weather is really bad but was wondering about snow chains or snow tyres for the 850 to get us through the bad stuff.

I'm looking for opinion on the snow chains/tyres idea and the merits of the V70 4x4's. A local garage has a V70XC with 70k, leather seats etc for £12,495 which seems a little expensive.

Don't know what type of fluid to put in the v70 power steering. The book say use ATF, could this be any ATF from Auto Part store? thanks in advanced.

Hello again. This is my second post here for 98 Volvo S70 GLT. My daughter came back from her friend yesterday (30 min. drive) and when she turned off the ignition, the radaitor fan stayed on for about 10-15 min. Temp gauge indicator was at the bottom ... showed no tem at at all. The coolant seemed to be at its normal level and temperature. This morning when I started the car the fan came on right away and stayed on. I turned the ignition off and took my wife's car to work. Did not have a chance yet to trace the problem. Any hints will be greatly appreciated.

I have the chance to purchase an '00 XC. 85k miles, was run low on oil. Runs and drives, but smokes.

I have two thoughts on damage and fix:
BAD - scored rings and cyl bores = +/- $3500
GOOD - Turbo ran dry = bad seals = oil in turbo and exhaust = +/-$500

I do not have access to pull turbo from the manifold to see if it is dry up stream of it or not. That would answer the question.

Any opinions on my thoughts above?
% chance it is one or the other?
Any ideas if turbo would suffer the brunt of low oil over the block?
any ideas on easier check for this?

I have a question about my 2000 S70 I am hoping someone may have experienced. I have a 91A7 code that has now poped up. This code refers to the throttle control module in which the local dealer says needs replacing and is a $900 part. Just curious if anyone has had to replace theirs? The dealer just didn't seem to be able to asnwer my questions. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced.

A few months ago our interior door handle decided it no longer wanted to live. A spring popped off and a small metal pin broke off the inside of the handle. I searched the local boneyard to no avail. There are not many foreign cars out here in the woods. I also checked a few online sites but all I find are exterior handles. I dred going to the dealer for many reasons, one being the nearest one is fifty miles. Any suggestions or online part store links I may have missed would be appreciated.

The round Driver's side climate control knob that adjusts the temp from cool to heat (blue to red) is stuck in the cool position. I thought a new knob would help but it won't budge. Will I have to replace the whole climate control panel? If so, is that something a novice can do by just removing the radio and connecting a new one? Thank you kevino

This is my first on a Volvo forum, but not my first Volvo! I started with a 123GT in 1968, my first new car! I have owned/been owned by a '76 264GL (v6), 240s, 740, and currently, a '99 S70T5. I have just purchased a '97 850 GLT for my daughter (she says she'll pay me back!) who is away at school and needs wheels desperately.
The 850 has 85,000 kms, so should be good for a few more. When I started looking under the radiator pan, for rust, etc. I found that the air pump was disconnected; all three connectors were hanging. I tried to clean up the connectors, and reconnected. (Why would anyone deliberately disconnect the air pump, says I?) The engine started and ran fine, and I heard no noises from the air pump. The next day, the battery was dead. Pulling off the battery terminal, I got an induction spark -- something is drawing amps. After checking every fuse and all the little red wires on the battery post, I still haven't figured it out. The alternator connection is the next suspect - tomorrow if it's sunny.
Does anyone know where the little red wires go? Could a seized air pump be my problem?

I am very new to this forum and new to Volvos too. I am considering buying a used volvo 1998 S70 T5 with 49K miles. Car is clean and nice to drive. Dealer is asking 9,000$ for it.

1. Is this price fair ?
2. What things should I check before buying this volvo other than usual carfax etc.?
3. Is Volvo too expensive to drive?

In the second of my family's (two) V70 bi-fuel cars (year model 2000) the engine frequently stalls and requires the driver to manually switch from CNG to petrol.

The CNG tank has been filled up only once and we have not been able to consume the methane contents during the three weeks we have owned the car. Therefore, I do not know if the stalling problem is reduced or otherwise affected by the tank pressure.

Sometimes (unfortunately seldom) the CNG tank valves are open, feeding the engine with methane. However, the engine soon tends to stall again, particularly when the accelerator pedal is released to decelerate the car. Before stalling I have heard a 'clonk' from the tank, which is louder than the valve sounds from our other V70 bi-fuel Volvo (the first one was bought one month earlier in August).

This, our 'August', V70 works better and its engine does not stall until the CNG has been consumed. Nevertheless, it then requires manual switching to petrol and the CNG tank pressure indicator needle has got stuck at 100% (I use the trip odometer to estimate when the CNG tank is empty).

Do you know where I can find technical/mechanical descriptions of the CNG sensors and actuators to explain the symptoms?
I want to repair or replace the *failing* components, not anything else.

I know that this topic gets beat to death., but I have yet to find the answer. I have a 99V70XC that I bought used. The only thing I can get the radio to do is display "off" I have tried uplugging the radio , and waiting 2 hrs. I have tried 3 or 4 times to get it to work , but I still come up empty.... ? My wife commutes 60 miles a day with no tunes.... Must be a real drag. HELP!!!! PLEASE!

I have a 1998 S70 non-turbo. Recently the "Service Engine" light came on. When I ran the codes I found out that there may be trouble with the air pump, or the air pump valve. Is this common? Is there any way to repair the valve, or the sir pump, or are they not repairable?

The car seems to run well under normal conditions, but it hesitates a bit when the throttle is tromped.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hello everybody. It is my first post here. I just purchased a set of Febi sway bar links on-line for my 98' S70 GLT. Can someone tell me the torque values so I don't overtorque? Also, I purchased an oil seal for the turbo becasue it leaks a little oil. How difficult is it to replace it? I am very handy with cars. One more thing, the car has 91k miles and I want to replace the timing belt. Can someone please point me to a link with instructions or perhaps just give a few pointers on this topic. Thank you for your help.

Can I replace the stock 8 ohm rear deck speakers with 2 ohm Infinity Kappa coaxials?

The originals look like 8" however all I can find are 6x9 or 6.75" to replace them is this easy?

FRONT PASSENGER DOOR ON 98 V 70 WILL OPEN FROM THE OUTSIDE BUT NOT THE INSIDE. WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR AND WHAT IS THE EASIEST WAY TO GET THE DOOR PANEL OFF. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP

On a couple of occassions the key has turned completely around in the ignition as if there was nothing there. I removed the key and tried again and again. I was afraid I wasn't going to get it started. Finally it caught hold and started. Is this an indication of a worn cylinder or something else.

Volvo V70 T5 1998. My engine management light came on a couple of months ago.

I have had a throtle clean out last week whatever that is. The light was out for 2 days then came back on. The Garage is now telling me to have the Module changed at alot of money.

There are no problems or symtoms with the car. They are telling me that if I don't have it changed I will get starting and running problems.

Any advise on why this light is permanently lit with no obvious symtoms and what I need to do Please.

Good morning all,
I have a '98 S70 that recently has started making an odd sound when started after sitting for a few hours. As soon as I put pressure the gas pedal, there's a high pitch whine that spins up, sounds like it could be either a pump or a blower, and runs all-out for about 45 seconds to a minute. After that time, it goes away, and the engine sounds normal... and if I start it within an hour or two of shutting it off, it doesn't make the sound. The noise does not respond to changes in RPM.

Does anyone have an idea about what might be causing it?

Hi could someone advise me as I have been given different advice regards converting my V70 2.5 turbo to LPG. A local workshop tells me it is ok and I must admit i have seen some 740 turbo cars with the conversion . But my local lPG specialist tells me you cannot convert a turbo car. any ideas?

I've got a 98 V70R. Has anyone sucessfully converted such a beast to LPG? I'm about to get my partners 95 2.5 850 10V converted and wondered about my V70. I know the commonly held belief is that turbos can't be converted bu I know different.....

I'm being quoted £1700 in Scotland for the 850 conversion.

New owner of a '99 V70 XC. It is our first Volvo and so far we love it.

Just yesterday the coolant light came on... I checked the level and it is below minimum.

My only question is is there a specific type of coolant I need to use? Do I need to mix with water? The cap says 50/50 Volvo type coolant and water. I'd prefer not to go to a dealer to buy coolant.... can I just buy some at the local auto store?

Can anyone help out this paranoid person out?

My search for a V70 continues after my holiday and I have just looked at a June 2000 V70 TDi (new shape); this has the 2401 engine, type number D5252D. It has covered 130,000 miles. Everything about the car was fine (the wealth of toys all worked perfectly) until we took it out for a test drive, and it was completely gut-less, to the point of being dangerous. The maximum speed we could get out of it was 98 mph, although the spec sheets say it should do at least 124. Acceleration should be measured in days rather than seconds. Apart from this the engine ran well, with no signs of smoke or roughness, and was very quiet.
I have ridden as a passenger and test driven (respectively) a 1997 and a 1999 car (classic shape) and both these had very good performance, comparable with my present 1989 740GLE (petrol)., which has 265,000 miles on the clock.
Is there something wrong with this car, or is this particular model (just before the introduction of the D5) hopelessly underpowered?

Anyone seen this or something similar?

I've got a 99 V70 and the instrumentation (or parts of it) randomly
work/dont work. When it doesn't work, the speedo goes to 0, the
odometer goes blank and some of the **** lights come on. Usually
brake, abs and sometimes the "winter mode" light will come on and flash
rapidly. Then after a few minutes... All back to normal.

Wierd....

I have just bought a used V-70 XC and can not get the stereo to work. I have tried unplugging the stereo and let it sit for 2 hrs and then tried the procsess again later and let it set for 4hrs and nothing happened. The key was in the 1st position with the unit turned on. The only thing I can get it to do is show "off" . I'm just about ready to go buy an aftermarket stereo. Can someone please save me some $$$$
