When I start my 98 S70 GLT (147K miles) after sitting for the day or overnight, I hear a mid-pitched noise, slightly metallic-sounding (but not 100% metallic), almost a whining that gets higher in pitch with engine RPM. I believe it's coming from the driver's side of the engine compartment. This only occurs between 1500-2200 RPM AFTER using the steering before the engine is up to normal operating temperature. Once the engine is warm, the noise goes away.

To simplify: I start the cold engine, no noise. Turn the steering wheel to back out, I hear a rubbery kind of noise during initial steering input and then between 1500-2200 RPM, I hear the whining noise. Once the engine is warm, no more noise.

All fluids are topped off and the power steering rack was replaced about 5K miles ago. I've taken the car into my Volvo mechanic, but can't recreate the sound for him because the engine isn't cold.

Has anyone else had a problem like this? Is something big about to break on me?

New to the forum as I recently purchased my first Volvo - a 1998 V70 XC AWD Turbo wagon. Soon after I noted an oil smell and found oil on top of the head that was flowing down onto the back of the motor and burning on the manifold.

At first I was told it was likely the gasket on the oil filler cap and the breather box was likely plugged causing positive crankcase pressure... Changed all that and cleaned everything up and started the motor and noted the oil was coming out from the bolts around the spark plugs. A couple of them needed tightening, but none were real loose.

I have since been told it is likely that someone removed the head and did not replace the o-rings inder the head.

My question is - are these regular o-rings, or a special shape only available at the dealer??

We are prepared to pull the top to replace these o-rings unless there are other ideas of what it might be.

I've been told that once i have a leak in my r&p i have to have the entire thing replaced and it will cost about 500-600 usd, is that right?
Also, I have seen online that i can buy a new rack and pinion and return the old one and get a refund for the core....has anyone had experience with any of this? I don't know what i'm doing here and i feel like i get ripped off anytime i go to a mechanic so any help on this would be appreciated.

Hello I just bought my first Volvo a 2001 V70 XC I like it alot I just have a few problems.

1. My interior dome lights turn on when I open the door to get in and out. But they won't turn on when I push the button to turn them on while I am driving or parked.

2. I have no backlight behind one of the knobs on the dash that controls the heat temp so makes it hard to see at night.

3. It has 109,000 miles on I have been told I need to replace the water pump and timing belt. How soon should I do this.

Key only advanced to position 1. Automatic transmission. Shift handle solidly into 'park'. Have attempted turning steering wheel in both directions while turning key without success. Tried both keys. No previous problems with ignition lock. Any thoughts or suggestions regarding this? Much thanks.

Anyone know how to lubricate the electric antennas?

Recently shot a code for malfunctioning o2 (heater circuit) up stream. Replaced it, a week later shot a code for Running Lean...

My first thought was the o2 censor, but since we just replaced it, anything else possible? besides vacuum leaks and bad map censor?

I see an ad on Ebay for a used rack and pinion from a V70 98 Volvo - I have a 99 S70 - does anyone know if this would work? The ad says V70 / S70 but I don't know why. I've emailed the seller but haven't heard back yet and wanted a second opinion anyway.

I want to see who can have an idea about this problem. My 98 V70 with 2.4 Turbo (low pressure) engine is draining my wallet at the tune of 10-12 mpg. I have a code that we have traced back to the PCV valve, but that does not seem to make the engine use so much fuel. I have put new distributor rotor, cap, spark plugs and wires, new air filter, 5W40 synthetic - to no avail. Car has about 160,000 miles on it and I am thinking of tacking the O2 sensors next, they must be about gone. However, the O2 sensors should be causing the engine to use 20-25% more gas, not 50%

Please let me know if I am wrong about the O2 and what other things I should look at. Thanks

I know for optimal performance 91 octane is recommended, but what will the effects be of running 87? Will it be bad for the injectors in the long run? How about substituting 91 octane for 87 octane once out of every four fill-ups?

Hello, please can someone help with a recent issue I have with my beloved V70 (98) AWD 2.5 LPT. The engine management light came on the other day there. Since then we have been getting a lot of intermittent idle problems. Recently it has been mainly in the cold mornings and after a a short drive the idle problem resolves itself. The cat is stinking of sulpher on the times it has stalled when driving as if uncombusted petrol is getting straight into the exhaust. Took it to volvo and they put it on the OBD 11 diag tool and told me fault code EFI _2-3-1 and 4-1-4 had been registered. Told me about the descriptions and told me they would have to take it back in for further diags after gracing them with 100 pounds of labour time already for 2 hours labour, they needed it back in to see if they could recreate the problem.

It appears they are not a 100% sure and the expensive option of the Air flow sensor at 210 pound should not be ruled out. I have checked the documents and this Air Mass sensor was replaced was on the car approx 3 years ago can it have gone again ? . What are the true meanings of these above fault codes and is the car miss firing from elsewhere etc maybe a duff lead. It does not seem to miss when running no loss of power just ide and stalls without excelleration pressure until it resolves itself weird. Could it be the cold start sensor or even the Lambder sensor how do you debug this not wanting to take it back to garage as they are far to expensive really.... would rather take it to my local garage with the codes but they might struggle also unless the problem which is intermittent can be capture at the garage ?

Recently purchase a S70 with 93k. ...unfortunetley zero records with the car, used car lot ....previous owner out of state. Anyway , pulled the tbelt plastic cover off to get a look athe timing belt. It is stamped Contitech .....could this have been changed once , maybe like 70k or so, it does'nt look that old....Contitech words on it are pretty clear. Does anyone know if the car have been built in 2000 with a tbelt stamped VOlvo or Contitech? Any one recall when they changed theirs for the first time if the stamp was Volvo or contitech?

Hi! newbie here! I have a 1998 S70, I'm trying to remove the upper dashboard and have problems, I removed all screws from speakers, ac vents, gauges, and glove box. I'm pullling up the dash and the middle seems to be stuck, I don't want to force it. I'm hoping someone can help me with this.

I have a 99 AWD S70 and my front windshield fogs up heavily when I'm driving in rain or cold conditions or high humidity. I've tried all types of adjustments to the defrosters/ a/c in the temp. thinking the problem might be solved, but really the only thing that works is if I actually wipe the inside of the window myself. My coolant level remains full, I don't think the heater core is leaking.

If anyone can please advise on similar problems and successful repairs, please do. Thank you!

So I recently purchased a 1999 Volvo V70 and I have a couple of questions that I hope some veterans can help me with.

1) I see that I have Traction Control and a Winter Drive feature. I wanted to know what is the Traction Control and when/why should I use it? And the Winter Drive... what is that and when/why should I use it.

2) The button on my shifter gets stuck from time to time. Is it OK for me to spray some WD-40 on it or will that damage anything inside the shifter?

3) Inside my tailgate, the panels came loose and I have one of (I think) 4 clips used to secure the panel. I want to purchase them but I don't know which and where is the best site to get them. Any suggestions of websites to get low-cost OEM-type parts?

I've got a '98 S70 that vibrates only when accelerating. I tried popping the hood and having someone step on the accelerator, but it only seems to do it when it is in drive. I looked at the engine mounts and they appear to be ok, at least from what I can see from underneath. Any ideas?

I have a 99 XC V70 and wanted to replace the stock spoiler with the V70R front spoiler. My questions are would this fit the XC and are there any suggestions on where I could purchase one?

OK, start the car up and put it into gear, it drives fine, after a few minutes if you shift outta D or come to a stop, the trans no longer engages. Its not flashing the "W" button light, but the upshift arrow is solid illuminated, as is the CEL, though I have not had a chance to tow it in to be scanned. If I put it in park kill the engine and restart, it will drive again for a few moments, then the whole deal starts again. Any ideas?

its an auto w/ the road condition modes. my mother handed it down to me but i don't know too much about any after market performance part. Can this model have an aftermarket turbo kit, suspension, etc. ? Links would really help.

Ok, bought my S70 about 14 months ago now, Apart from being a little under powered (2.0 10v) its a great car. Pulls the caravan like a train.

When bought it had a dead A/C, I bought a "home kit" to fill the system enough to ensure that the compressor works. |I did this rather then spen £70 on a refill proffesional and find that it does not work.

Now, this works fine and after a time (not enough gas I assume) it does get cold,

HOWEVER:- When the car is not in motion there is like bearing or metallic noise comming from the glove box area which goes away when the car is moving... Also, should the car engine fan kick in when the A/C is on?

Any help / advice on this would be great.

Just replaced the evaporator in my 99 V70XC. This model has ECC (Electronic Climate Control). Changing the dial to port the air to the defroster, dash vents, or floor now has no effect - it always blows from the dash vents. I believe the recirc flap is inoperative as well. (On that point, the arm from the recirc motor to the flap was off when I disassembled everything, I reinstalled it where I thought it should go.)

Is there a procedure for resetting the flaps (like some Chrysler cars have)? Checking the electricals, all inop devices are controlled by the A (big) connector at the back of the climate control unit. Or did the climate control unit fail for whatever reason?

Fan works fine in manual or auto mode. Temp modulation works OK too (nice cold air for a change woohoo!)

Can't code scan and even if I could, it'd be generic, not Volvo specific.

'98 S70 GLT

I got a few issues with my v70 that i am not entirely sure what is causing them and hope some people could help me.

1. The cars in-car and out electronics dont work such as blinkers/lights/dash if the key is turned to much or too little, you have to play with it sometimes in the ignition for it to work properly it isnt a major hassle but i would like to know if its common or faulty?

2. The aircondition every day or so builds up all this hazey dust inside of it and when you put the aircondition on full this foul smell and a large amount of visible particles come out which is cause of smell.... i dont know what part of the aircondition is broken.

3. Shiftlock switch? is there a secret to it coz when i drive the car sometimes you dont need to press it sometimes you do to get it out of park. But when my mum drives it regularly the key gets stuck in ingnition and she cant get it out. I just hoping theres a trick to it to reduce the use of shiftlock button because its really annoying.

If anyone can help with these issues it will be much appreciated other than these annoyances the car runs well, cant complain but i really want a S90 instead of the 960 we got and maybe a 850 SE

1998 S70 T5 with 70K and a service code of P0107 (relating to the map sensor?)

I have searched high and low to locate this part -- even have the vadis which doesn't show it.

Where is the part located exactly?

What are the common troubles associated with this code? (bad sensor? -- anything else?)

(I reset the check engine light and ultimately it will come back on, but ONLY after the car heats up and I drive for 15 - 20 minutes or so).

Hi folks, I have been here before to discuss this problem - the dreaded S60 tickover issue!! I have had the Throttle Body Replaced about 12 months ago complete with upgraded cooling fan and this seemed to have sorted the problem - at least until now.......

Unfortunately the problem is now back with warning message (Emmission System Service Due) and the orange MIL light is on.
Having had the laptop on the job it tells me that the error is with the oxygen sensor (the one after the cat convertor) However I have also now replaced this sensor too, but to no avail.

A further point of note is also that the voltage seems to be a problem in that I have replaced several bulbs in the last few months (often the headlamp bulb)

One would think that it shouldn't be necessary to clean out the throttle body every 10,000 miles or so.....?? So maybe there is another issue??

I would be really pleased if anyone were able to offer any further advice or expertise to help me identify exactly what the problem is??

I am a new member on this board and new in owning a volvo. I recently bought a 99' Volvo V70 N/A with 100k and after a two weeks of driving it, I noticed this light on the instrument panel (my car didn't come with a owners manual) that looks like a radiator with a fan.

I checked the coolant and it's fine and the temp gauge stays at the 3 o'clock position. Can anyone help me find out what the problem is? I am reluctant to enjoy my drives when I have that light on.

Any insights on what the cause may be will help me very much.

I checked the boards for headlight alignment and didn't find anything for the V70.
Anyone here know if I can do a headlight alignment on a 99' V70 w/o going to a auto shop?

I would like to hear from other members if they had to do it all over again, would they keep their S70 beyond the 120K mark or sell to purchase new? This seems to be that proverbial line in the sand that once crossed there is no going back, akin to the point of no return. In my case I'm facing a new set(4) of tires and my 120K service very soon and am wondering if it makes economical sense to keep my car or look into a new purchase(i.e., payments vs repair costs)?

Up to this point, other than regular maintenance items, the car has been a gem but I fear the cards stacked against me as I look into the next 100,000 miles(maybe because I've been so lucky up to this point).

So I would really appreciate the advise of members that have gone through this point and get their experiences; be it good, bad or indifferent.

I have a coolant leak somewhere in the back of the engine near the turbo. Can anyone educate me if there are any coolant hoses, etc. in that area that can be checked. I can't see anything back there.
Most of the coolant drained from the overflow tank the other day and was leaking out toward the back of the engine. The oil looks fine. After the engine was cool I refilled and idled the engine until it came up to full temperature and the thermostat opened. I could not see any leak at that time. I also turned on the heat to see if it might be one of the heater hoses but they were OK. At idle there didn't appear to be any leak. I revved the engine up to 3-4K or so and sure enough a leak began from the back of the engine.
Any info would be appreciated.

Put in a new battery in my 1998 Volvo V70 T5. I now have: no speedometer, no tachometer, odometer changed to kilometers, and no display (clock, temp, mileage, etc) The only suggestion I've heard of is disconnect the negative cable for a few minutes. That didn't work. Any ideas? This is the second time I've posted this and have yet to get a reply. Am I the first Volvo owner to change his own battery?

I have an 04 XC70 that blows every fuse I put in for the tail and marker light. It sits in bay 30,31, or 32. I can't recal which. Does anyone know what I might need to look at rather than paying someone $300?

I have a 2000 Volvo V70. I just had my driver's side door lock mechansim replaced at the dealer for $450. I could not get in or out of that door, either from the inside or outside. This happened for no apparent reason -- just a regular trip to the grocery store! Since I am fat and 48, it was not fun to manuever myself over the middle console to the passenger side to get out, so I needed it fixed. After 4 hours at the dealer, the cost was $450. I am fuming. How badly did I get ripped off? To boot, the lock button on that side is permanently in the locked position, even though I can lock and unlock the door. Your comments about how foolish I am for paying this won't upset me. Thanks!!

hi all i have just recently purchased a 1998 s70 2.5 turbo diesel auto

now when i purchased it the seller told me the passenger door does not lock on the central locking but it will unlock on central lockin

he told me it was fine until he went to unlock it one day and before it unlocked his passenger lifted the handle and since then it has not unlocked on the remote although it does still lock on the remote ?

just wondered if any of you guys wold have any ideas as to the problem and possible solutions

i was wondering if there was any way to re-sync the doors etc ?

any assistan would be appreciated i know it isnt a major problem but its a niggly one i can live with if i cant get a simple solution

I've been having a problem with my 98 S70 non-turbo eating O2 sensors for the last 6 months or so. I'll change one and the car will run great for a month or so then will start running very rich - the CEL will indicate the O2 Sensor. I read on Consurmer Guide. com that "Due to contamination entering via the reference tub, oxygen sensors may fail prematurely. (1998)" Can anyone tell me what the "reference tub" is or where it is?

I'm in the market for a new(ish) car, and came across a 1998 V70 R AWD for $7,200. I originally wanted something like a 2002 jetta/passat or similar car, but I currently have a 760 turbo wagon and realized how much I'd miss the ability to haul large items and whatnot. Are the first year model V70s, or V70 R to be exact, good, reliable cars? I read some reviews saying the R's suspension makes for a rough ride and it can have some troubles. The car im looking at has every option minus the 3rd seat, and 118,000 miles. There is another 1998 V70 R for $200 cheaper, but has 150,000 miles, and is a color combo I dont like (silver on black with wood accents - the one im looking at is black on black with silver accents)

Do any of you recommend/dont recommend buying it? Thanks
