I'm new to the forum, been driving Volvos since 77. We're on our sixth and will never switch.

My question regards cross bars. I plan to leave them on the car and wonder which would be the best type to get. Round, square, or the wing shaped. I only plan on carrying a few surfboards.

Your comments on your experience will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, this is my first post. I have a V70 T5, 2001, and I'm about to embark on an 1800 mile road trip with kids and dogs. I got a dipped beam error message and so I bought a new bulb. Then after two weeks of this message the bulb came back on and error message went away without changing the bulb. Since we're leaving on this long trip I had my husband change the bulb anyway. When he was doing it, the black plastic almost H shaped piece that goes between the bulb/connectors and the cap essentially shredded in his hands. It looks like one prong of the H melted. This is a passenger side light, but a similar situation has developed on the driver side. With the passenger side it's still in there just kind of gently resting between the connectors (which are fine... not corroded at all), and on the driver's side it is tighter but on it's way out. What does this part do? Can I get it replaced? Do I need to? I'm in such a hurry (we're leaving in 5 days) and we live somewhere there aren't dealerships nearby so it might take my repair guy a day or so to fix it. Can we just put some silicone grease on or electrical tape on the wires to prevent shorting? I just don't want to have a short/fire mid-drive. Thanks in advance for your help! Nancy

Hi, I'm considering buying a '04 xc70 w/ 50k for a good price. It is very clean, but noticed that it was from new jersey (salt air and road salt for ice). Upon looking closer, the mechanics of the car under the hood and undercarriage look fairly clean, with some minor rust/corrosion where parts were unpainted/treated. Is this a deal breaker? How well are volvo's treated for rust/corrosion protection. should i be concerned about the longevity of this vehicle? Thanks for any help. -Bob

I am a very happy Volvo V70 owner. The car is very nice and it has no snacks. It is from july 2002. I have had this car for 1 year now.

I want to ask you guys, if you have any experience to replace the normal headlights to bi-xenon lights. The lights are also taken from a 2002 Volvo V70. It is the bi-xenon lights with the black casing and repeaters on the side as the standard repeaters on the standard headlights.

I went to the Volvo dealer today to arrange a service for my car. He said that it may not be possible to put on the bi-xenon lights, because the wiring may not be for the bi-xenon lights as well for the wiring for the leveler.

Does any of you know if the wiring to this car is prepared for those bi-xenon lights? The dealer didnt even want to hear what I had to say about possible wiring prepared for bi-xenon. Any ideas how to solve this? I really could use some help now.

I'm new to this forum and look forward to the great info here. I just bought a 2005 xc70 and I received one key, the remote, no valet or other remote. Is there a work around for the $325 it costs to get another? I am thinking of getting a valet key made for $160...in any case, it stinks so I thought I would check to see if anyone has a workaing alternative to the dealer?

I’m a newbie here. I’m an expat working in Thailand and the natural choice of car to buy would be a Volvo. Volvo for Life, good for my long distance work travel. I’ve got a 2001 Volvo S70 2.3T with about 109,000km on it.

Problem started on the first day when the car had rough idle, smelt of petrol and died. Had it diagnosed at the dealer and they replaced the rear O2 sensor, a couple of spark plugs, a number of ignition coils and etc. Car ran fine for only a week. I have a ODB2 tool, so I plugged it in. Strange thing is there is no engine check light but the ODB2 discovered a P0132 – front oxygen sensor no activity and showed the engine was running in open mode all the time. Reset the code for several times every time it occurred until car starts to idle rough and died on me again. So I had the front O2 replaced. By now, my pocket is really burnt.

The car is running fine now in close loop. But every day, the ODB2 tool will show me she ran in a stuck open mode after sometime of driving. No engine check light, no warning, no nothing. Then I will scan the Volvo and P1132 showed up. Check in the web and found P1132 is front O2 sensor not enough activity or something. Every time there is a P1132, the car will run stuck in open mode. But as soon as I reset the code, car goes into her normal close-open mode routine. Cycle will repeat itself. Read all over the internet and concluded the problem could be caused by the following:

1. Bad MAF that needs cleaning. Can someone tell me where is this MAF? A picture will be nice and I will clean it myself for my pocket seems no longer in existence due to severe burning.

2. ETS that needs an upgrade and I read there was a S70/C70/V70 recall or something for a free service for the ETS now has extended warranty of 10 years or 200,000km. I tried to talk to the dealers about this but they return me a blank stare. (Thailand, where they will rip foreigners off at every chance, charge a different “foreigner” fee for everything, so they rather look stupid back at me and say I have to pay.) Can anyone tell me if there is a higher order of Volvo customer care (outside of Thailand) that can check (by VIN number) if my car is eligible for this recall? I did write to Volvo in Thailand but there was no reply from them, I am not surprised. Customer service does not exist in Thailand (verified by many foreigners who wrote about Thailand).

3. Is it normal for the Volvo to run in a stuck open loop mode when a code is raised and after reset it goes back to normal? Is it healthy for me to always reset the P1132 code?

Sorry for long post, help… I am really frustrated with the non-English speaking dealers & mechanics …. & Thanks.

And here is an added something just for reading information. Seems like when the workshops are faced with a Volvo rear wheel driven car and cannot fix it, they will transplant a Toyota Supra 1J or 2J engine in it. Toyota they can fix, whatever continental cars else they cannot.

I was told by the volvo dealer that I needed to clean the flame trap box and the throttle body. They wanted $850 to do the job. I know how to clean the throttle body, but the flame trap box I'm unsure(location, part #, difficulty level, etc). Any help, pictures experiences would be welcome. Thanks

I have a 2004 XC 70 with about 35000 miles. The vehicle has been totally trouble free but next month the factory warranty expires and I am wondering if it will fall apart the following day.

My original dealer is offering an extended warranty for 3 years 100000 miles for $3800. Is this needed?.. advisable?.. a rip off??? What are peoples experience from 35000 miles to 80000 miles? Are maintenance costs high?

I would love to hear from anyone with particular experiences that will give me any insight as to the best course of action.

I have a 2001 V70 T5 that is surging at about 2500 RPM when only a very light pressure is maintained on the throttle. ie just keeping the car ticking over to maintain speed. At the mo it appears to only happen when the engine is warm. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Hello all. New guy here. I just bought a 2003 XC70 - it came with only one key, so there's no remote/keyless entry or anything like that. I would like to get one, but am not sure what my options are. Is the only way to get a properly working key and/or remote to get it through a Volvo dealership?

I know some random car accessory stores sell generic remote starters that can be installed (and also come with a remote for keyless entry). Would these work for a Volvo? I've just heard stories how Volvo keys have to be 'married' to the car in order for it to work.

I have been using my cig. lighter to charge phone and ipod without a glitch for over a year.
Suddenly, when i plug anything in, it blows a fuse instantly.
Does anyone have any idea as to why this is happening? I haven't tried the rear lighter yet, and perhaps should to see if the same thing occurs..

Hello Folks,Decided To Change Timming Belt And Water Pump.Fitted Pump,Then While Tightening,One Of The Seven Bolts Stripped Its Threads,Thought,Well Thats It Games Over Now,Then After Shouting At Myself And Trying Various Attempts With No Luck,I Removed A Bolt From The Rocker Cover,Looked Exactly The Same Only Longer 10mm,Tried It,Hey Nonny Nonny It Worked,Put Short Bolt Back In Rocker Cover,So It Would Appear That The Bolt Holes Are Longer Than The Bolts This Lets Me Catch Unused Threads Past The Stripped Area.Job Done,Hope This Helps Anyone

I have a 2001 V70 T5 that has been sitting in a transmission shop for 1 month. They are at loss of what to do next. Rebuilt Transmission (gone over twice); rebuilt Valve Body; new Solenoids; Software upgraded. The intermittent problem is the car downshifts from 3rd to 2nd rough. It feels almost as if it misses 2nd and goes into 1st, but they see that is not the issue. Up shifts fine, and the downshift problem does not consistently occur. They have taken to Volvo dealer - who stated put in a new transmission; an exotic car dealership on the same street - much friendlier -cleared codes in software but at a loss; posted questions to some type of transmission user group - no answers; asked the company that rebuilt the valve body - no ideas. I would like my car back and the transmission shop, who is sticking to my original quote, would like to solve this as they are losing money at this point. Any thoughts?

Can anyone tell me if the HU-803 radio (the 4 cd stack one) in a V70 03 model has a CD input at the rear as I have found an ipod adaptor in the USA that allows full control and displays albums and tracks on the ipod screen unlike the official Volvo adaptor?

MY SON HAS THE SAME MODEL WITHOUT THIS PROBLEM , I HAVE COMPARED BODY WORK , TRIM ETC ETC ON BOTH AND CANT DETECT ANY OBVIOUS DIFFERENCES.

I have a 2001 V70 non-turbo with 155,000 miles. Air filter is clean. Engine sputters, almost dies, when sitting at a stop light in drive. When warming up, engine will rev high on its own. Message center is also telling me that the coolant level is low and engine should be shut off. Coolant level is within norm, and message goes away once engine reaches normal operating temperature.

No installation instruction provided by either Crutchfield or manufacturer, however, I did it.

I'm having issues getting my 2G Nano to work (keeps wanting to disconnect my iPod), but my 1G Nano works great! Plan on contacting manufacturer tomorrow to troubleshoot. I will post my findings.

Just started keeping track of my mpg, and am surprised at the difference in mpg reported by the OBC, versus that calculated from miles and fuel to re-fill (33mpg vs 42.3mpg). Is that normal?

I have owned my V70 D5 s auto for approx. 6 mths, recently the amber warning triangle has come on, on the dash, the digital time display clock races forwards on ignition and the display msg comes up with a 'SRS airbag service urgently required'.
I took it to a garage and had the computer read on the vehicle and the code P0244 was indicated, the mechanic cleared this fault, but since doing this -
the triangular amber warning light remains on.
the SRS fault still indicates
the clock still races.
and now the directional indicator lights on the dash and the audible sound when indicating only operate intermitently. ?????? HELP! Any advice welcome
*Apart from all of this the car has 167,000 miles (FSH) and drives excellently.

Hi, my sister and my wife both drive v70's (01 and 02).
My sister accidentally put ethanol in her tank today.
She didn't start the engine but had it towed to the service center.
Presumably, they need to drain and flush the tank.
Any other thing to be concerned about?
What would've happen if she had driven away?

Bummer, that the ethanol pumps fit the unleaded tanks.

I have a 2004 S40 and love it. Problem is I live in Northeastern Pennsylvania and my car goes no where in the snow.

I have an explorer that I drive in winter but it in no way compares to driving the Volvo.

I was looking on Auto-trader and there are some 2001 XC70's going for about $8,000.

I have read a lot of bad stories about the 2001 models with computer, trans, and throttle issues. I am wondering if I was buying one with 100,000 miles on it what are the chances that the common problems may have already been resolved?

I really don't want to spend anymore than $8,000 because I don't plan on driving it all the time. Would the XC70 be a good all-wheel-drive or should I find something else?

My original plan was to get an Audi A4 Quattro but if I get rid of the explorer I want to get something similar to an SUV. I love my Volvo but I don't want to buy a bad car for the sake of having another Volvo.

While removing the sun shield, the rear view mirror popped off on my 2004 XC70 ! The post popped out of its retaining clip! The mirror seems to be fine, but is now dangling by its electrical cord. Who knew that sun shields were so vicious?

Does anyone have a reference for what to do to get at the circular retaining clip so I can replace the mirror? A page from a manual?

The mirror post is inserted into its retaining clip from the "roof side." Cannot be done from the interior side Other things must be taken out so that I can access the retaining clip from the roof side.

If I am in danger of wreaking more expensive damage by attempting this, please advise.

Hi, Hope someone can help. I have reclined my rear seta behind drivers seat today, when I went to put it back up the seat belt had retracted and I now cannot reatract and it is fixed tight and stuck. How can I get the seatbelt to move? so I can get the seat back up. HELP? Thank you

Anyone know if a faulty fuel pump relay will cause a no start? I tried the diagnostic and the only code I got was a 132 in socket six. Socket 2 proved no problem. The funny thing is that this all began after a high pressure car wash and ten after sitting a no start. Then after about hour and a half with hood open it started Then a small rain shower, same deal...Now no start, it's like there is no firing just cranking? Any advice...I was going to try a replacement relay, the one in there is the original.

Sometimes when I get out of my 38,000 miles 2005 XC 70 miles after driving, I can smell burnt oil coming from the engine area. I change my own oil (very fussy and enjoy it), so I see the underside of the engine without the belly pan. I can see no oil leaks nor do I leave any oil spots when parked. I keep hearing about turbo return line - need some opinions.

Still have waranty time left but like to know prior to returning to the dealer.

Has anyone used E85 or other Ethanol blends in their V70 XC (2002 or similiar)? What, if any, conversion steps were required? Were there any problems?

With the prospect of very inexpensive alcohol fuel becoming available later this year, we're very interested in running our cars on a mixture of mostly alcohol and as little gas as possible. Thanks in advance for any help.

Ist post, so go easy.I've searched on the forums for my problem (well, the car's) and have had no joy...

1999 V70 2.4 petrol. Sluggish at low revs, although goes fine in 3rd with foot to the floor. Gives the impression that the more you push it, the slower it goes. Very kangarooish at low revs (say, from traffic lights) and it's struggling to climb up the revs unless you're in a lower gear and revving its nuts off.


It's also started drinking petrol and is bringing in less than 10mpg at present.

Can someone please tell me where the oil filter is on a 2004 Volvo XC70. I purchased the filter (it is only a paper insert) but I cannot find where it goes on the engine.

I just purchased a 2007 V70XC that has the shopping bage storage compartment in the cargo area. Can anyone recommend a cargo mat that is flexible so that we can still use the shopping bage storage?

I have just found my rear tailgate does not lock, I only have keys for locking no key fob and wondered if there is a common fault? I presume that is why alarm red led does not work when car is locked?
I have ordered a key fob but I think it will not work as the tailgate is open?
Are there any switches or sensors, the dash display says tailgate open when I open it and goes out when I close it.

I hope these types of posts aren't too annoying. I'm an active member on a sailing forum and can understand that noobs can be a little annoying at times. I'll try to make this as efficient as possible.

We are looking at a new wagon as the family is about to have it's first addition. I am looking at a V70 in the 2002 range and am hoping for some real life advice from actual owners.

Here's what I know:

I've always appreciated Volvo's from afar. Clicking around a while ago, I noticed that Consumer Reports gives good ratings to V70's from 2002 on. I'd really like to get a 2001 or later V70 for $9K - $11K with decently low miles ~80K. I would also like to get decent gas mileage, but I live in ME and have to drive in ice and snow

Here's what I've been told:

I've visited a few local Volvo garages and talked to guys there. They tell me:
- many parts are now made by third parties (brake pads, etc.)
- They have also told me that 2001 models had computer issues and 2002 models did not.
- the 2.4 gets far better mpg than the 2.4T
- the ride is no different between an XC and a "regular" V70

Here's what I'm hoping to learn (and hopefully more!!):

- How reliable do owners fell their V70's are? XC or otherwise
- Are 2001's less reliable than 2002's?
- What kind of mpg are people ACTUALLY getting?
- Are there chronic problems that affect this model year I should be aware of in my shopping? Any way to detect said problem(s)?
- How do the FWD models do in snow? Does the XC pretty well dominate the snow?
- How many third party parts are available? On a scale of 1 (Ford) to 10 (Ferrari), how much are parts/maintenance?
- How well do Volvo's generally hold up to rust?

Thanks a bundle for any help you all can give a guy trying to be an educated consumer in the age of the internet!!

I have a 2002 V70.
I got a pearcing squeel a few weeks ago.
I thought it must be the belt, so I replaced it.
Seemed to slack off when I did. But soon enough it got worse.
I thought maybe it's a bad pully so I pulled the belt and checked the pully.
They seemed to be fine. I had about enough and wife was pegging out the frustration meter so she took it to a mechanic this morning. Before popping the hood he said you have a bad oil trap. We've been to this guy before and he's one of the most honest mechanics you'll find, so I trust him.
he pulled the dipstick and the squeel stopped. put it back and it started back up.
I should also note the car has been running ragged here lately also, supttering, rough idle even stalling.
Does this sound on line that it is the Oil Trap?
I have found a few posts on how to replace it and I am on the fence with doing it myself. He estamated $400 to fix it. Sound fair?
He's also changing hoses and gaskets along the way.
I also found somewhere that mentioned a Fire Trap. Should it be changed as well?
Is it the same thing?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

I have a 2003 D5 S V70 with a unusual problem. It has blown out a core plug in the casing and has blown the lower rubber turbo intake hose.

When i take the oil filler cap off it smokes like crazy and makes a popping sound. Smoke also comes out of the dip stick when i remove this.

I have taken the two hose's off the top of the Oil Breather box and pressure comes out of the port that goes to the turbo hose. everything appears to be coke free and i have check passage through the oil breather hoses and all seems fine. I am frightened that if i do not find the source of the blockage i will have another engine out job and be replacing the rear main crank seal next.

Has anyone come across anything similiar.

Engine has 154,000 motorway miles on it.

My wife and I are about to purchase a 2001 V70 T5 M with about 105k miles on it. The car looks almost perfect on the outside and I looked it over with a mechanic today and everything seemed in good shape -- no oil leaks, etc.

A lot of people seem to think that 99-01 V70s are sub-par. It also sounds like I'll have to replace the timing belt right away, since I don't think it has been. Any other impending repairs? Should we not purchase this car?

I have a 2003 V70 2.4 TS with 200bhp and Nebula 18" 235/40/R18 goodyear F1 tyres on.

I have just bought a 1200 kg caravan but have no idea what tyre pressures to put in these tyres.

Current driving with 2 adults, a child and dog are 30psi in front and 29 in rear.

I know the pressures for caravan tyres but wouldsomeone please tell me or point me in the right direction for the V70 tyre pressures ASAP?

Hi guys, this is my first post.

I've serached for help on this, and found a couple of suggestions, but none seem to be right.

I bought a new mirror glass with the wide-angle to replace the original. Used this in Europe and it makes a world of difference, especially for my wife on the highway!

Anyway, I'm trying to remove the old glass, and it's becoming harder that I thought. I read in another post to move the glass towards the outside, and it should come off. I wrenched on it pretty hard and it didn't budge. Does anyone have any tricks on where to bend, pry, twist, etc. to get that sucker off. The car is a 2004 V70.

I've had my 2001 V70XC for three years and have had no confidence in its reliability from day one. I bought it at 45,000 and it has 80,000 miles on it and the electrical is making me crazy.
Problems:
1. Power seats jitter and dance around and occasionally recline all the way down while driving.
2. Instrument cluster goes dead.
3. Heater occasionally goes dead.
4. Tranny will slip during acceleration. (very wet road conditions)(its not wheel spin)
5. Transmission Service Required message comes and goes. (can be reset but comes back in a few days)
6. SRS Air Bag service warning on constantly.
All these things tend to heal themselves and normality resumes for awhile before the next gremlin attacks.
The dealer hasn't been helpful short of wanting to "try" and replace sensors.
All 8 of my prior Volvo's I've had over the past 25 years I could drive with confidence.
I'm not ready to give up on it just yet so any input would be welcomed.

This morning when I backed out of my driveway I put my car in drive, a second later there was a clunk and at the same time my STC icon came on and the STC Service Required message came up. I hit the gas, but the car would not move, it just revved. I tried again a second later and it moved forward, but heavily and sluggishly as if it didn't want to go. I pulled off the street and turned the car off. When I started it a few minutes later all urgent icons and messages were gone and the car moved forward normally. About 4 hours later I was driving and as I slowed to stop at a red light there were two clunk, clunks and then a split second later the STC icon was on again, the STC Service Required Message was up again, the RPM reading dropped like a bomb to below zero and this is really weird, but the A/C was on and instead of blowing out cool air as it had been it immediately started blowing warm air out of the vents. When I hit the gas the car would not go forward. It was as if the car was still running, but had no power or it was in neutral. I had to put the car in park, turn it off then turn it back on to get it moving again. About a 1/2 mile down the road I heard the clunk clunks again as if the transmission was slipping. Currently it's sitting at the Volvo dealership waiting for Mon. morning and hopefully a diagnosis because currrently it feels unsafe to drive. Am a little concerned because in the past year I've spent $3300 on various sensor replacement, scheduled maintenance, and things that are just going wrong with a vehicle that has 100,000 miles on it. Is this typical????

My 2001 V70 auto came with volvo 16 inch standard fit alloy wheels, they are shod with 215/55/16 tyres, which according to VADIS is the middle size I could fit. Problem is they rub on the inner wheel arches any time I get anywhere near full lock on the steering, which is quite a problem using UK size parking spaces. I have read that this is a problem with certain aftermarket alloy's but not original fit. Anybody offer advice??

I've read many posts about people having problems with their fuel door hinge, however, my 2001 XC70 has no latch. As in; when I make a U-turn I can see it swinging open in my passenger side mirror. Is there supposed to be a grommet in there or something? I also read here that after 10 minutes the fuel door is locked. Not on mine. If anyone can tell me what parts I need to fix this I would be most appreciative.

Also, I've changed brake pads on a honda and a toyota -- can I do my XC70 pads without any special tools?

I am wanting to replace the cabin air filter on my own, but am unsure on the location. Is it under the dash on the passenger side? I would love some guidance on this. Thanks!

my 2001 V70 has a buzzing noise coming from behind the a/c / audio area.It starts as you sit in the drivers seat and if you don't start the engine eventually stops after about 5 mins. I am wondering if it is something to do with the motion sensor but it doesn't seem to matter whether I use the 'blipper' or the key to lock the car, as soon as I get back in the buzzing starts. Anyone got an idea what's wrong????

My V70 2001 is currently showing a much too low outdoor temperature each one of three time I turn on the engine. If I turn off the engine after a while and turns it on again, the temperature is read correctly.

I guess the outdoor temperature sensor is either dirty or is a little loose.

Does anyone know where the outdoor temperature sensor is located?

After 18 months and 11,000km the brakes on my 2006 XC70
shudder badly. Dealer has traced to heavy corrosion on rear
brake rotors, and says it is my fault as I don't drive
often enough, and the corrosion builds up, and doesn't
get removed through normal use. Not covered by
warranty, $400 for new rotors.

I haven't had this problem in 30 years of light driving
with other cars (no volvos).

Is this normal ? Am I going to be replacing rotors
annually ? Are 3rd party rotors of better quality and
less likely to corrode ?

Hi all,

I’m trying to help my old man out with his sat nav system. It’s a multi disk changer in the boot which holds 6 disks, currently with three in there (GB and two French disk all 1999).

When he turns the system on the screen pops up and asks for the disk to be put in, if you take the cartridge out and put it back in while the screen is up it does a scan and then asks you to put the disks in.

I’ve tried putting a CD cleaner in and varying the order and position of the disks and that doesn’t seem to work. I’ve also tried viewing the disks on my laptop in file manager and it comes up blank which I though was strange. If anyone can help we’d be most grateful as I know if it goes anywhere near Volvo its going to cost an arm and a leg !!

Have a 2005 XC-70 that I've owned about 4 months. Noticed this weekend while driving at speeds of 40+ a dragging sound from front end; a friend followed me and identified something coming down and dragging near the front tire.

My bro-in-law, a BMW tech, looked and said he saw a loose panel that obviously had 3 or 4 clips or holders missing. He couldn't tell from the side (he was just visiting, so I couldn't get him under car) if it needed screws or clips or rivets to fix.

I called my dealer (Herzog-Meier in Beaverton) and described the problem, and they said it sounded like the splash guard. They estimated $50-100 to fix and said it's not covered by warranty.

I'm hoping this is something I can fix myself for the price of a couple of screws. Anyone have any insights?

My XC70 2003 with 310,000km has ben a charm til now. At 110km car shakes
and then smooths out at 120. Dealer says tires. Tire man says alignment.
My gut says transmission. Any similar experiences.? Any recalls in this area.?
