I bought a 1999 V70 XC and I cannot find what engine I have, because in the Vin # is shows "56" and I do not know if this is a 5204, B5234T etc.

My car is a 2002 V70 AWD with auto tranny. The transmission takes a second or two to engage when going from R to D but not from P to R. I had it in last fall and they replaced a broken engine mount which helped very slightly. They were going to load the latest software update but couldn't due to VADIS being down. As I live out of town I wasn't able to have the software change done till just before xmas. This reduced the delay time but did not eliminate it. The delay is also not consistent ranging from virtually none to a second or two. The dealer did a follow up call to see if the problem was resolved and I relayed the above info. They asked me to bring the car back when possible and they would do whatever they could to resolve the problem. I asked if there were any other fixes they had in mind, they replied no but they would definitely look at the car again.

The transmission is also occasionally slow to make a shift up, usually around 50-60 km/h and only once in awhile (~ once or twice a month). There have been no other problems, the fluid is good and has not been flushed. The car currently is at ~ 88K km so is off warranty which is making me nervous. We bought the car used at 42K km and I never noticed the pause nor did the independant Volvo shop that performed the pre-purchase inspection. Other than this one problem the car has been very good.

Now that it's off warranty and from all of the transmission problem posts I'm wondering if we should think about unloading this car before we get in to a tranny replacement or rebuild. Thoughts???

The heater on my passenger wing mirror is not working . I want to remove the glass in order to check the connections behind it, I'm hoping the problem is just a poor connection.

Any information on how to remove the glass from the housing would be gratefully received.

I recently purchased a used 2001 V70. Since the weather has gotten cold, I have been dealing with a frustrating shift-lock problem. The wagon is an automatic, and it stays stuck in "Park" when you first start the car unless you have some amazing good luck. Sometimes it seems to be associated with the ignition as the key often gets stuck there after having had the shift-lock problem act up. Does anyone have any idea what this could be and if it will be possible to fix without going to a mechanic? I have read references to a "PNP switch" but mostly with regard to older model 850's.

2001 XC V70 Car full of christmas presents, 2 kids, wife and father-in-law stalled on Christmas morning. It was jerking and hesitating intermittently for months when problem started getting worse. Then "performance decreased" message came on. Towed and car sat at volvo dealer over holidays. Became aware of throttle problem last summer. I was in denial. Volvo not only has a throttle problem. I believe the car is poorly constructed. Numerous suspension components needed replacement, problem with computer chip, wiring harness, seat motor, door locks, windows, gas cap, faded trim, etc. The dealer was moving and I asked for a print out of service records. It was 28 pages long at the end of last summer. Bought extended warranty for thousands so I could keep car longer. Got back half of cost in few months from repairing faulty computer chip.

The car is still a bit jerky on the ride from the Volvo dealer after software upgrade. I was told the throttle was clean and did not need any service but only a software upgrade. I am wondering how a software upgrade can fix a defect in a faulty throttle??? I was told the car was fixed and drove like a dream on a 10 km road test. It is more of a nightmare. I drove home, cleaned it up and went to the Lexus dealership on same day. Got an RX 330 and only $15k for the trade in value. The Lexus dealer told me they called 3 volvo dealerships. None of them wanted it but suggested that low ball price as wholesale anyway!!!

Driving this car has been emotionally similar to although not as serious as spousal abuse. You always get let down. You fear the next episode. You think you will make up and things will be better after just one more trip to the repair shop but it never ends until now. I do not want to sell this junker privately as I do not want to lie to some unsuspecting buyer. It is with great sadness I sell this Volvo. My mom and dad had 3 before and drove 2 into the ground. I was planning on doing the same. These new Volvos are junk. Shame on Volvo. Shame on Ford. Putting families at risk when there motto is Drive Safely. Do they not even care about repeat business?

I just had a PREFORMANCE DECREASE message on my Volvo S70 2.4T (2001).
Does anyone know what that means and what to expect from mechanic in terms of price and time of repair?

I'm looking at buying a 2003 v70 d5 se auto but something has scared a little bit!

The current owner tells me that he experiences a least one bulb failure every month! This sounds to a little excessive to me and wondered what other owners have experienced.

I'm new to volvos so don't know a great deal about them, so if this an obvious question then I appologise!

When l am driving everything is perfect until l stop at a light or anytime that my V70 02 T is not moving the steering wheel vibrates. The minute l start to drive, it goes away.

Now the vibration is not severe but it is annoying and really do not remember if it always vibrated or it just started. It doesn't make a difference when the car is stopped if l am in D or N the vibration is still there until l step on the gas.

I first noticed the vibration after not driving it for a week because l was driving my wife's 05 S80 on a road trip.

I just picked up my 04 v70-R (6-spd) last Thursday. This w/e I noticed a strange grinding noise from the Rt front when I turn hard left at low speeds (parking lot)

I looked in the wheel well for like a stick or something stuck, but couldn't see anything.

What could be making this noise?

New member just purchased an 05 V70 5T. Came equiped for Sirus radio. Do I have to buy the Sirus radio from the dealer. Or can I buy a receiver from and after market supplier such as Cruchfield?

Fuel Filler door locked, pulled fuses, OK. Central locking system does not lock rear doors. After manually locking the doors, remote does not unlock the rear doors or fuel filler cap. Door lock button on door does not lock rear doors (or unlock after manaully locking). Gas guage reads empty (filled up five days ago and have only driven 117 M (approx 70K?). Info center says: -- miles to go before empty.

I have pulled fuses 8 and 6 in the trunk (boot) and they are OK.

I have pulled fuse 27 in the passenger compartment and it is OK.

Before I call the dealer - any suggestions?

On a recent 1000 plus drive from PEI, Canada I had a sequence of things happening.
First, difficulty removing key from ignition; second, difficulty moving shifter out of Park poition; third, lights and gauges on instrument panel quit working; fourth mesage: Airbag service-URGENT.
Took it to nearest dealer service; they couldn't replicate so couldn't fix. Took to another dealer service. They said key/shifter problem was fixed by tightening and lubricating the linkage. Said no error messages showed up so probably it was a glitch that wouldn't happen again.
Anybody ever have have this happen?

Help! my wife got a cassette stuck in the hu 613 radio in her v70. Anyone help with getting it back out? Thanks

How do I remove the radio in a V70? There are no obvious screwcovers.

I recently purchased a 2005 XC70 and have 1500 miles on it.
The manual recommends oil change every 7500 miles, but I have always had the first oil change with the new cars I have driven at 1000-1500 miles.
Is Volvo different from other cars?
I am curious to know what is really good for a brand new Volvo.

I just purchased an iPod adapter from mp3yourcar.com (much cheaper than the Volvo version and will work either manually or in direct mode).
I have a 2005 XC70 (no changer, no cassette, no navigation an HU-650 I believe.
I was wondering if I can easily remove the radio andd install the cable/box myself. I am handy, and have installed manya stereo in older american cars years ago when everything was much simpler and less crowded.

All I really need to do is remove the radio/CD player.
Is this possible or is it so complex I will have to pay a pro installer?

I have a V70 - Sept 2000 model, new shape and one of the lamps behind the automatic climate control panel has failed. It's behind the cluster of three push switches which direct the airflow in the cabin. Are there any tips on how to gain access to the rear of this panel in order to replace the lamp.

Hi - as a newbie to both this forum and the XC70 hopefully someone can help.

My wife has a 2004 XC70 with the factory stereo - single CD/radio/cassette.

I'm not sure which headunit this is - can someone provide a model number?

Are there aftermarket options to install Sirius with the factory HU? According to Crutchfield the SIR-ALP1 should work on "2004-up Alpine" which they say is a fit for Volvo but I'm not sure.

I have a 2005 XC70 and have been frustrated that the front windshield constantly fogs and the defroster either doesn't clear or has to be on all the time. It's almost as if there is a film on the windshield which i've tried to remove with glass cleaner. I've had to pull over on a couple of occassions b/c I couldn't see. The dealer checked and determined that the controls are working fine so I'm at a loss and ready to sell the car. Has anyone experienced this problem - is this a defect - any suggestions?

I have a Sep 2000 Mark 2 V70 with only 54k miles on. You will have seen my recent post about the wet passenger floor... but thats sorted.

Anyway, I have a K & N panel filter in which does slightly inprove the nice 5cylinder growl the engine has and up to recently did improve mileage and performance.

However, on Saturday, the car kept stalling and drove like a lumpy bag of ***!!!

It was going great changing up through the gears but when I was changing down to first at the lights, the revs that normally idle at 800 -900 rpm dropped to 500 then 400 then stalled and my mileage dropped to 18.1 mpg from 26.7!!!!

So I put my Stock paper filter back in yesterday and ran it for bout 2 hours around the doors and my mileage went back up to 25.3 and the idle back to 800 rpm and when changing down it drops slightly to 700 rpm then back between 800 - 9000 rpm and sounts as sweet as my bird in bed!!!!

So does anyone know what went wrong? or can I reset the ecu by disabling battery or something and putting my loved K&N back in?????

While l'm really the only person that that drives my V70 02, today l heard a weird noise when my wife borrowed it and was pulling into my driveway.

When you are behind the wheel you will never hear it but from the outside it sounds like a bird chirping.

It appears to be coming from ( looking at the engine from the front) on the left hand side where the belt is. Could this be the pulley out of whack or when they changed all of my head gaskets, they moved something and didn't put it back properly.

If not what do you think being that l just went over the 50,000 mile mark and now my extended warranty kicks in with a $100 ded.

By the way my dealership gave me the complete service history of my V70 and it was well maintained. It had a lot of things done and changed from bulbs, battery tie rods, sway bars and on and on.

By the way one more problem in a short amount of time and it's gone even though it always ran.

My 01' V70 has wagon type aluminium stock wheels. I keep my cars very clean and ever since I gotten this car I've noticed I cannot keep this black dust off the wheels. When I wash the car I stick the hose down by the brake pad and spray for a few minutes.I keep spraying until the black dust is gone,but, it shows back up with the next drive.I have seen this before on ther cars but, not to this degree.I even waxed the wheels thinking the will keep the dust from sticking.

My questions are; 1)Do other Volvo owners have the same problem?.2)Is it the brake pads?3)What brake pads are recommended?

I am looking to purchase a set of used snow tires for my 01'V70.The wheels are off a 94' 850 wagon.They are both 5 hole lug. The only difference is the tires currently on my car are 195/65/R15 and the ones I am considering are 195/60/R15.

Will the 5 lug pattern fit my car?

What's the middle number in the tire size(65 vs. 60)?

hi. v70 2001 alarm sounds after deadlocking by remote,nothing left in car. Radio was removed for repair by audio agent then put back in to car.

I noticed last night that my passenger floor is soaking wet!!!

I dont think its the air con unit coz thats still blowing cold but my mate said it maybe the heater matrix!

Could that be right? or is it just a rubber bung come out and i have taken water in out of a puddle?

I have a 2001 Volvo V70 T5 with manual transmission. I bought the car appproximately 300 miles away from where i live. When i was driving the car back and nearing my home i noticed the engine warning light come on and the message "EMISSION SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED". I drove round to my local Volvo dealer the next day and they connected their laptop and it returned a problem with "Long term fuel trim". He suggested booking the car in so that he could check the air intake system for leaks and other problems that might relate to this, he also said the fuel mixture might be too rich. I picked the car up later that day and they said that they couldn't find any problem with the car but they had adjusted some "Values" presumably using the laptop and reset the warning lights.

The engine warning light and "EMISSION SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED" has come back on again after only 8 days. I took the car back to the Volvo dealers and they suggested having the car for a whole day so that they could check it over. They called me to say it was a temperature sensor on the engine that was giving false readings to the Lambda sensor? Anyway, both lights were off when i started the car, but when i got home they both came back on again!

I'm not too worried as the car is driving and performing fine. However, i find niggling problems like this infuriating and very expensive!

Its already cost me £64 for them to tell me nothing was wrong and then £100 for them to diagnose and fit this temperature sensor which doesn't look like it was needed at all. Where does it end?...

Does anybody know what could be causing this and if it is indeed anything to worry about?

I get the strong impression that this Vardis system is extremely inaccurate and pretty much a license to print money, its bloody outrageous what they charge. I wouldn't mind paying if they diagnosed correctly and actually fixed the problem, but i'm £164 worse off and no further forward!

What exactly is the point in having all these sensors, ECU's and fancy diagnostic systems if mechanics are still taking pot shots at where the problem lies? its doesn't make any sense. I think if the engine warning light and led message screen wern't there i wouldn't be in this situation worrying about it, i'd be happily driving along without a care in the world. Everyone managed fine before these diagnostic screens appeared didn't they? they seem to be a lot more trouble than they're worth. Simply a cause for panic and an easy way for Volvo dealerships to make money!

I have a 2000 XC 70 and this weekend the clutch went in fact smoke could be seen and you could smell the clutch plate. The car has done 85K miles and at the time was reversing a trailer on normal terrain. I have only had the car for 6 months and wonder if this is normal mileage for a clutch to go and has anyone had a similar experience or aware of clutch problems?

I have talked to Michellin and they do not have a replacement for the Pirelli Scorpian STR 215/65/R16/98VM+S tire that is on my 2004 Volvo XC70 as factory equipment. They refused to recommend an "H" rated tire from Michellin that will work.

Any suggestions? I am not displeased with the Pirelli tires, but wonder why I am paying for the "V" rating when I do not need it.

This is the fourth time my "check engine light" came on and my v70 2002 t has been to the dealer 3 times already and l only have 300 miles left on my orig warranty before my extended warranty kicks in but with a $100 ded.

I just bought a 2005 V70 and took it in to have the DRL turned off. The dealer turned the headlights off but later I noticed all off my markers front and rear stay on even with the light switch turned off. I took it back and the dealer is having difficulty understanding why he can't reprogram the car for ALL lights off. They took one of their 2006 service loaners and instantly reprogramed it so they say they do not know why they can't do the same to my '05. They want my car for a day so they can talk to the Volvo folks about the situation. Anyone had this problem and know the fix?

I'm driving a 2002 V70 D5. I love the car, but lately a malfunction has been bugging me. When driving, the engine suddenly stops for half a second or so, and then usually starts again. If the cruise-control was on, it wont work for about 5 minutes. All the warninglights will shine, but no messages will be shown. Lately the stops are getting longer, a few times i've had to turn the key to get i going.

The engine is running great, sometimes the malfunction is gone for weeks, then it suddenly occures every 5 minutes for a while.

The Volvo garage has replaced the software without any improvement.

Anyone with a clue?

does anyone know where i can get a adapter lead to convert an iso wiring ( new radio) to link up with the steering wheel controls (sony stereo) i have two leads spare can low and can high but require interface to conect to sony

On my V70 02 if you look through the mag wheels there is a part that is attached to the rotor that looks rusted on all four wheels. The rotor face is fine because of the pads friction? Am l right so far.

What can l do even if it's to replace whatever it is.

Hey guys,

Just got 2001 Volvo V70 2.4T last nite, car has about 60K miles on it and on the way from the dealer message came up "Performance reduced".
I test drove this car before I bought it many times and this car had Check Engine lite on, so on one of the test drives I floored the throttle and that message "Performance reduced" came up and I felt like the car was cutting engine power.

Dealer said they fixed the Check Engine lite as it is not showing up anymore, but after driving from the dealer for about like 20 minutes or so the that "Performance reduced" message came up.

I was wondering if it has to do anything with that check engine lite being there before, or something else?
