Hi, I am new to the forum although I am now on my 5th Volvo.
I drive a 2003 V70 D5, bought 6 months ago in a private transaction - besides the point really but it sems to matter to Volvo UK. Last week the engine had what the RAC recovery guy described as a catastophic accident when the cambelt failed due to a sized tension pulley.
Has anyone else in the community had a similar problem? Or do they know if this is a common issue?
I should point out the vehicle has done only 40,000 miles. It has been serviced (last in October last year) albeit some of the early services were late - not down to me. According to the Volvo service schedules (so I'm advised) these should last 8 years or 96,000 miles. The vehicle is also an import from Ireland although I was unaware of that and the Registration docs make no mention of that fact - this apparently alters the warranty period/miles.

I know this looks like a prize moan, but I bought the diesel (I was a confirmed petrol head before) on the basis of the product reliability and now believe there is a design/specification issue here that is being covered up.

I have a Volvo V70 2001 2.4SE 170BHP Manual with 57k on clock.

I have just had the 60 k service and replaced the oil with fully synthetic and put NGK double tipped platinum plugs in. Also had my K&N panel filter cleaned and its runnin as smooth as a babys butt.

It goes great but as its not the turbo you have to push it through the gears but when you stick your foot down in 3rd it takes off great. But I dont wanna keep havin to shag the gears to get the best out of the 170bhp.

I know I can get the ECU mapped to the 180 bhp spec and have been told that the torque per foot increases 10% and I will benefit from mid range torque gains and less gear changing. Basically you can put your foot down in 5th and it picks up much better.

Is it worth going back to a brand new Mann paper filter 1st or should I do this and get the ECU re mapped?????????

I just noticed that my 02 V70 a/c does not blow as cold as my S80 05. While it is still cold there is a big difference.

Is it that l need more freon or whatever they use now and any idea on the cost?

I'm new here and hope somone can help me.
I have a 2001 (current model) V70 2.0L Turbo that has an idling problem. With the aircon on the engine idle speed fluctuates up and down by a few hundred rpm - with the airon off it idles perfectly.
I can hear a clicking noise that conincides with the engine speed change - presumably this is the aircon compressor switching in and out.

Reading some of the previous posts it seems cleaning of the throttle body and other parts may be the answer but would appreciate any specific advice you can provide.

Anybody have this problem. AC works fine till you are 2-3 hours into driving steady, then the fan keeps blowing, and it sounds as if it is blowing especiallly hard inside where the glove box is, but very little air is coming thru vents, though still cool, but barely able to cool entire car. Stop for awhile ( maybe ab hour or so ), and start up and it's back to normal. Only happens after drving for sometime. Very strange behavior and almost imposssible to repair as it isn't happening when I want to take it to my mechanic. And so it goes with another quirky round of behavior from the Swedish mistress. The climate control has always been erratic as it seems to either run full cold or full hot without much in between.

I just purchased a 2001 V70 2.4T and I am very pleased overall, however I just turned 70000 miles and noticed a transmission shudder, is this something a transmission flush will fix or is it more serious?

Hi, I have a 2001 V70 2.4T and I think the bonnet opening wire is broken. The bonnet opening handle moves easily without opening the bonnet. I have taken off the front grill to try and reach the catches but there seems to be something blocking access. Any advice on how to open the bonnet gratefully accepted.

I have a 2005 XC70 with 6,500 miles on it. The car pulls to the right constantly - to the point I can take an exit off the highway just by letting go of the wheel. I have taken the car to the dealer twice to have it checked. Both times they adjusted the alignment but the problem remains. Is this common to Volvo's? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This is my first time posting, although I have been a Volvo owner for 14 years. I have a V70 wagon and yesterday the key suddenly would not turn all the way to the point where it would come out of the ignition. I checked the manual and found nothing to help, played with the shift lock and checked all the doors for electrical triggers to prevent the key from turning fully to off- nothing. The car does shut off completely, but you can't lock the car with the key still in the ignition and so I can't really drive anywhere where I might lock the door until I fix it!
Anyone else ever have this problem?

I have just installed new exaust system into my 2001 volvo v70 t5 and the catalysator was removed and in its place was put resonator and the lambda song was installen on it. also I have put new tail pipe. Everything sort of would be ok but the computer started showing "emision system service required". And the car does not go as it used to go. What could be the problem and how could i solve it. Does anyone know if it's possible to install an aftermarket subwoofer with the connectors of the original subwoofer in the luggage compartment?

The original sub is tooooooooooooo expensive!

I am trying to connect an external device to 12V in the rear of the car. Does anyone know where in the rear fuse compartment I can find a 12V connection point that is only live when the ignition is switched on. There are sevaral 12V connections in the fuse box (in the unused fuse connections) but they are all permamently live. I want to wire something in there that is only on nwhen the ignition is switched on

My wonderful 2004 V70R wagon which I paid a fortune for, has a problem when driving in rain and/or on wet pavement. When driving through these conditions only, there is a violent shudder which only alleviates when I decelerate. It's then followed by a sound akin to a metallic grinding or feedback from a sound system. I've had the tires checked, the DSTC is fine, and new brake pads. It's at the dealership for the 3rd time and they're puzzled. Any similar problems out there?

Hello fellow Volvo owners:

Our '95 940 wagon is no longer as useful since the airbags deployed. It is likely the insurance folks will "total" the vehicle. We need a replacement wagon ASAP. We are looking at both generations of the V70.

I am seeking advice on which year and model variant of the second generation V70 I should pursue for a replacement car. I am aware of the Electronic Throttle Module (ETM) issue and am trying to figure out which recent model year it ceased being an issue (I believe it was resolved post-2002)

Which year and model variant should I pursue?

What other major issues to be aware of?

I will really miss my 940, but they are increasingly hard to come by.

Hi

When l drive over bumps it feels like l need shocks but when l asked my dealer they said my shocks were just fine.

Now l'm sure that they didn't take it out for a ride and l will have to go back and let them drive it with myself in the passenger seat.

If not the shocks then what, l have 55,000 miles and the turbo feels great and on the highway it's perfect.

I have a problem with the rear seat belt on my 2006 XC70. After I put the rear seat down the first time, when I raised it back up the passenger side seat belt won't pull out now! Does anyone know how to release it so it will pull out? It is under warranty so I know I can take it back to the dealer. I am just hoping that there is a quick easy fix. Thanks - Fred

After my battery was dead, I tried to enter the radio codes by memory. After 3 attempts, the radio just says "OFF". I have the correct code, and tried disconnecting the radio wires and power to reset. It still says "OFF" and will not allow me to enter the 4 digit code. Does anyone know how to reset the radio so I can enter the code?

Just had this error code come up on my 2001 Model year V70. Has anyone else experience this? My cruise control also stopped working approximately 2 weeks before this error message appeared. When you switch the cruise on it still displays in the dashboard but you just can't set the speed. Is it likely they are related?

Is it one combined switch for the brake lights and the switching off of the cruise control?

There are 2 codes, one for 'circuit high' and a different one for 'circuit low'. Is there anyway of telling specifically what has failed from each of these different codes?

I have just bought a german 2004 V70 D5 and i would like to change the language of the bordcomputer since it is german but i don't know how.

I don't really like the automatic rain sensor feature on my 2003 V70. It just doesnt work very well. Most of the time it takes too long to wipe and I have to flick the dial to manualy make it wipe. Can you turn this off and make the intermittant wipers work manually (set the dial for the speed you want).

I think this is one piece of technology that we just didnt need. I often find the first wiper setting is too fast for the rain but the intermittent setting (auto sensor) is too slow.

Consumer Reports shows that the 2001 V70 has had a lot of transmission problems - it shows it with the lowest reliability rating for the transmission. But it doesn't tell what the key problems were that 2001 owners experienced.

Does anyone know what the key problems were with the 2001 transmissions? I'm wondering if that would provide some info to help solve the "transmission shudder" problems on my 2002 V70 2.4T.

How easily can the bumpers between the different models of the xc/v70 models be exchanged? Will a regular v70 front bumper bolt on in place of the xc70 front bumper? What about rear bumpers? I am looking into a volvo and ask these questions because I like the practicality and safety of the awd xc70, but feel the styling is a little lacking. (I'd be looking at the R if it was in the budget, but alas).

Also on the xc70:
Can the wheel mouldings be taken off, or will there be visible holes (mounting holes) if they're removed? What about the trim moulding along the bottom of the doors? If they're taken off will they leave holes as well, or are they kept on with adhesive?

If the door trim is not removable, I feel compitent that I could i sand them out and repaint them to my liking, I have some prior experience with this.

At first it was intermittent, the tailgate would not unlock. We took it to the dealer, he said the mat was in the way. We took out the mat, it still happened. Now its permanent. The tailgate will not unlock.

I've clicked buttons (on the fob and the interior locking buttons), twice, three times, a dozen times. The tailgate will not unlock.

When pressing lock, a small vibration can be felt through the tailgate handle, indicating it has locked. When pressing unlock, very little vibration is felt through the tailgate handle, as if it can't quite get the juice to finish the job.

Is there a manual way to unlock the door? I would have purchased a sedan if I knew this.

I 'd love to know if other owners of V70 ( mine is a 2001 T5 wagon) are having the check emmission light, check engine, and ABS brakewarning lights go on at various times and then disappear only to reappear intermittently. Everything is in perfect working order and I am at about 83,000 miles. If anyone has any clues to this, love to talk to you if you've had any luck getting to the bottom of it.

I have a 2001 model year V70. For the last couple of months I have had a problem where sometimes the rear passenger door doesn't lock when you press the remote keyfob. If you unlock and lock again it will always eventually work, sometimes it takes 3 or 4 attempts before it locks.

During the last week or so the driver's side rear door has started showing the same problem.

Any suggestions before I start dismantling the rear doors?

My 60,000 mile 2003 V70D5 is getting difficult to get into first or reverse when starting first thing in the morning.

When this happened in December I used the last of the warrantee miles to get it fixed by Hapstead Gatwick (UK), they claimed to have removed the transmisssion and lubed the clutch spline.

Problem is that 3 months later it has happened again, my local independant workshop says they have never heard of this problem, has anyone else ever experienced this

One thing I noted the winter after I bought my volvo is that, not only was there a rear window defroster, but side too.

The wrong side.

The rear side window in the back of the wagon, ON THE DRIVER's SIDE
had the wiring for defrosting.

What good would that do me? I can't look out that window with either a turn of the head or a mirror.

I think, generally it is intended to be the opposite side of the driver side.

Was this a production problem? A design intended for right side driver side steering? They never bothered to adjust for cars destined for left side driver side steering?

2002 V70 wagon

Anyone ever have a problem with an air pressure sound coming from the brake pedal? It just started on my 2001 V70 T5 a few days ago. I haven't noticed anything wrong with the brakes, but the sound is really annoying. It stops when I initially press down on the brake pedal, but starts back up if I keep the brake pedal pressed down or when I let go.

My XC70 is having transmission problems similar to what many people have mentioned in the forum. The dealer's solution is to replace the transmission which is going to cost me thousands as the car is out of warranty. I checked with local transmission builders and got all kinds of estimates. I would like to know how many hours of labour on an average is usually involved in rebuilding a transmission and what parts should be replaced and approximately how much should it cost?

True story. I wasn't heavily impacted, just a bit worried.
I think I was down to my last gallon or two of gas. I pulled up to the gas station.
Hit the fuel button door, stepped outside to open the door and pump the gas.
Locked!
No problem, I've done that before, didn't hit the button hard enough, maybe too fast.

Walked back, hit the buttom. made sure it was hit.
Went to pump gas
Locked!

Hmm, what do I do.

Start car
turn off.

Nothing.

Lock, unlock with remote.

Still, little gas door locked,

Button, button button. I tried combinations of things.

nothing.

I drove off a bit anxious. didn't even know if i had enough gas to get to dealer the next day.

Had to do another chore.

Went to do other chore.

Got out of car, did chore. Went back to car. Unlocked with key instead of remote (i do that regularly).

The little lock thingy by the window popped up, but a familiar sound of mechanisms
wasn't there.

Indeed, the door was unlocked, it opened. But within a second, the alarm went off.

It responded to the remote, turning it off.

I thought to myself, hmm, maybe my gas lock issue was electronic rather than
mechanical.

I hit the unlock button for the fuel door.
It worked!


electronics has been flakey again. Not with the fuel doors, but with other items.
And often, the unlocking the door with a key, not hearing the unlock mechanism,
and opening the door, and having the alarm go off seems to settle it.

A bit odd, but it works for me

Any similar stories?

2002 V70 Wagon in the US

This is the second time this happened. First under warranty, so I don't know how they fixed it.

The rear passenger seatbelt is locked. the belt is TIGHT against the seat. I tried folding the seat down, which gives the belt spare room. I hoped the lock mechanism would free up. The belt system took up the extra slack from my folding the seat down, and it still is locked. So now, my seat only has enough belt to raise half way.

No accidents. This just happened. Same seat as before.

No magic button to press?

(out of warranty now (of course))
