Hello! I drive a 2001 V70 non-turbo and this week the oil sensor light has been coming on when the car is hot and cold and idling below 1000rpm. When above (800 actually) it goes off until I slow again to just below 1000rpm. Can anyone help?

Just got word from the dealer service rep that I need a new fuel pump on my 2001 V70 T5 -- $890 + tax. Last couple of days I noticed strong gas smells in the garage. Drove the car a short distance and parked it back in the garage. Checked a couple minutes later and, sure enough, the garage reeked of gasoline. When I checked underneath I found gas staining the underside of the gas tank and drips on the floor.

This car has 87K miles on it. I can't imagine my fuel pump should be leaking like this. Huge safety risk. I did notice the Volvo Recall R176 on 2001-02 S60 models in "Arizona and Nevada." Seems they're having problems with the S60 fuel pumps from those years and are pinning the blame on "fuel quality and climate conditions." Turns out the 2001 S60 and V70 models have the same fuel pump.

I'm getting the old fuel pump from the service rep and filing complaints with Volvo and NHTSA to see if we can't get this recall extended to the rest of the faulty fuel pumps out there. Anyone else running into leaky, faulty fuel pumps on their 2001-02 V70?

Help!! My front passenger door lock on my 2001 V70 T5 makes a rapid machine-gun like noise when opened or closed. It's getting quite embarrassing when passengers are in the car as it goes off when any door is opened, not just this one. Is it the solenoid? How difficult is it to replace by the home mechanic?

How do I use my 30GB video iPod controls on a Volvo installed iPod Adapter?

In various forums I read that there were two possible solutions to use iPod control wheel while being connected through the Volvo iPod Adapter:

1) pressing Menu twice after starting the car (there are actually a fdew more steps involved).

This doesn't work. Any ideas why not?

2) Finding a dip switch and change it from Playlist control to Direct control.

This was mentioned in teh context of US Spec Adapters. Would this work with volvo installed Adapters? Where is the switch? If it is on teh Adapter, how do I find the adapter?

I hate the current inability to control the pod and any help would be much appreciated!

I have installed nice sand colour leather seats. My original Volvo didnt have heated seats. But the leather ones have it. So I then got the switches installed, alle the wiring is okay, all is connected, but there is no heat....

Does anyone know why? Is there some kind of software update that also shall be done? Or anything else?

Alright, this is my first post here, hoping that you all can help with some expertise
About a week ago my wife's 2001 V70 2.4T wouldn't start. After some troubleshooting I determined that it was a bad fuel pump. I have replaced it with a brand new oem unit from my local dealer. We seem to be getting fuel all the way up the the rail now but it still wont start.
I have several indicator lights on now that were not on before the fuel pump issue. The first is an SRS air bag light ( I think that I may have disconnected an air bag when I disasembled the back seat) I dont think that this is causing the car not to start. The second is an ABS light. I've read that this can cause issues (or be the indication of other issues)

Other thoughts: The car battery died from too much cranking so I had to jump it from another car. The car will now turn over but will not fire (once in a while I can get it to take for 1/2 of a second but it immediately dies.

Any help that you all have would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, My name is Gian and I was fortunate to drive a Volvo 164 when I worked in Rome way back in 1986 as a sports editor.

It was actually an American model imported from Texas with an a/t (my sister who lived with me at time couldn't drive stick) that we bought for about 800, if I remember correctly. It was blue, a tad battered, but never failed to start.

It's main use was to transport members of the newspaper staff I worked with to Florence, Ostia, Naples, etc on weekends or just across town to where the party was. One night, we did manage to fit 11 people in it.

It was a great car, but when I returned stateside, I bought a Dodge Raider and fell in love with them too. I'm currently on my third, but my mechanic (who drives a Volvo 850 and is a big fan of the brand) says I should start looking for other cars.

Since I am no longer a sportswriter, I actually can afford a decent car now.
I was looking at the Mercury Mariner hybrid (too small), then the Toyota Highlander Hybrid (too expensive) and the Limited (still to expesnsive) when I drove by our local Volvo dealer and saw 2.9% on pre-certs (of course, that was for only two-year loans). Still, there was a mint 2005 XC70 with 18k miles and a still pristine black interior that was reasonably priced, and my wife and I fell in love with it.

I actually test drove an XC70 last month and found it to be strong and nimble, so it was fine with me.

I was a bit chary to buy it because it didn't have a backup sensor, but already one of the posts on this board hinted at a way to install a camera oneself.

So I start out your debt but hope to contribute often!

In the meantime, my first question would be: What Volvo and non-OEM aftermarket features did you all find most useful?

Hello! I am brand spanking new here. After years of wanting one, I am finally thisclose to getting one. BUT I have a few questions before I make the leap.

A little background about me, I currently drive a 1996 Toyota Camry that I love. What I love most about it is that this car takes so little to maintain. Other then then the normal services, like oil changes and new tires and brakes, I have never had any problems with it.

I've read and heard that Volvo's, while quality cars, can be a bit getting used to. I am on the road A LOT. I drive to many states in the course of a month usually. I need something that is going to be reliable for me, not leave me stranded on the side of the highway in Kansas, in a snowstorm where no cell phones work. I am looking at the Volvo XC70 models in years ranging from 1999-2002. Can I trust this model, these years? Which, in your honest opinion, is the best year for the Cross Country?

If I were to go on looks alone, I would pick the 2001-2002 year models, but I have read some absolute horror stories about these production years.

I also live 2 hours from the nearest Volvo dealer. How much of a hassle can I expect from my local mechanics who may not be experienced with a Volvo?

Any other words of wisdom you can pass on to a Volvo virgin?

I have a 2003 Volvo V70 Wagon. Just yesterday I was unable to open the lid to get at the gas cap. I pushed the button on the interior light panel many times with engine on, off, and after driving a bit more then trying again, and nothing. The lid would not disengage. The owners manual doesn't designate a certain fuse for this function. I tried just manually removing fuses from the fuse panel but they all seemed to be fine. I tried prying the upper left hand corner of the gas cap door but was unable to jimmy it open. It is quite frustrating because now I cannot fill the car with gas. Does anyone have any simple solution to getting the gas cap door open? Is there an easy manual way to disengage the door or do I have to dismantle the rear right wheel well shroud to get at the mechanism?

Two part question for XC70 2006 & 2007 models only:

1. From 1 to 10, 1 being totally dissatisfied and 10 being completely satisfied; how satisfied are you with your 06' 07’ XC70?

2. Yes or no; if you needed to buy a new car, would you buy a 2007 XC70 again?

Please say if your car is a 06' or 07' model.

2002 V70 75K Miles

My doors began locking and unlocking at random times with greater frequency over the past few months. I stopped using my remote key.

I have removed all fuses related to central locking and now there is a clicking noise in the dash that still causes the interior lights to turn on. This now happens so frequently that the battery gets drained overnight.

In another forum with a similar issue for a '94 850, the recommendation was to use a wire brush on some terminals near the battery, to remove "the gunk" but that does not appear to the case.

The dealer is recommending to replace the door modules @$400 per and I cannot get into that type of expense. Any help would be appreciated.

I purchased a replacement bulb for my Low Beam Driver sided headlight for my 2006 Volo V70. After openning the hood, I found it is very dificult to replace. The only way to replace it is to remove the Air Filer Housing. This is a chore. In order to remove the housing, you have to release 3 clips. Volvo would have a special tool for releasing these clips. It is not possible to release these by hand. I puzzled on this one for a while and decided I needed a hollow pipe. I decided to try several pipes I had laying around and then dried a standard copper water line pipe. I had to use a hammer to make the end smaller. The pipe has to be about 2-3 feet long. If you place the pipe over the release clip and push down hard and pull up on the air filter housing the clip will release. You have to release 3 clips. You can now remove the air filter housing. Once this is removed you can now easily change the headlamp. Do not attempt this if you do not feel confident as you have to disconnect some electrical connectors and vent pipes, etc.

This is my first post so I'm a newbie. I own a 2004 V70R. Lately when it has been raining, a very loud squealing sound is made and it drowns out the radio. I thought that a belt was slipping so I brought it to the dealership in Raleigh, NC. They told me that it was actually the exhaust mount and muffler rubbing the propeller shaft. Something to do about the muffler being very hot and when cold water hits it from below, the metal constricts hitting the shaft. I was told that there was a bracket to fix this problem but only on the regular V70. Supposedly my car is too low to the ground. Has anyone heard of this problem? Thanks

I can not reset the "Time for regular service" code. I have tried many times putting the key in the 2 position and holding the trip odometer until the beep. I get 045 and then back to Time for regular service. Any tips or ideas.
It's on a 2004 xc70 with 93000 km.

I couldn't get the brake lights in my XC70 to go off, even after turning off the car completely. Both the dealer and myself were pretty sure that it needed a new brake switch, however when it was replaced I still had the problem. After a day and a half of diagnosing (no codes stored) they have decided that the central electronic module and rear electronic module have both gone bad. Anyone have these issues or know what other systems these affect. Volvo tech said he's never seen both of the modules go bad together....

With winter round the corner I have bought a trolley jack to make the change to winter tyres quicker. Where can I put the jack so I can change 2 tyres at once?

I have a Volvo XC V70 2001. We have had nothing but trouble with this car since we bought it. It has been the most expensive car I have ever owned in terms of servicing.

The Volvo has done 110K miles and I was told today that I might need to have a new transmission. Quite simply the car tends to sputter/hesitate when cruising at a constant speed. There is no deflection in the tach. The technicians have said we need to clean the throttle body (150USD) and flush the transmission fluid (300USD) which apparently has never been done even though this car has been serviced in accordance with Volvo's guidelines, which apparently do not include changing the Transmission fluid. Which reminds me. Next time I buy a car I would like a servicing guide from the manufacturer and another marked "the real technicians guide to servicing your car." It would be the latter I would follow. But if these two items don't fix it, and they suspect it might not, then I would, like a lot of others before me, need a new transmission.

I don't mind paying for proper servicing and I understand that things go wrong. But the issues for this car have been so many and so varied. I have in the past tried to get Volvo to admit they have significant issues with these cars and was essentially told to go away. Yet if you take your blinders off and research Volvo's before you buy you will find so many people with similar issues all being ignored.

Well if you own a XC change the transmission fluid. Somebody else can recommend the frequency but make sure you change it, don't trust the dealer to tell you when it needs doing.
Every time you get a bulb failure report it. Man the bulbs in these things blow almost monthly.
Complain about the rotors warping constantly.
And replace your cars before the Warranty runs out.

Quite simply I think Ford should know what is going with the Volvo line. And hopefully will work to get things fixed. I was looking at buying an S80, and XC90 T5, but I am now seriously considering Toyota's.

This past Saturday, my dashboard readout read "enginer system service required" was displayed. After the car resting for about 90 minutes the light never came back on. This moring... (Tuesday) the light came on again. During my lunch hour I tried resetting by placing the key in position one then holding trip odometer and mvoe the key to position 2 and waited for the beep and message to go away which it did. I had my windows and sunroof open. I was not able to shut the sunroof, so I turned the car off, locked the car by the keyfob and then unlocked and restarted and all "seems" good. Did my stint work you think? I was not having any problems with the car. About a month ago I did have the breatherbox replaced.

We recently bot a used 2004 XC V70. The day after we got it the driver's side low beam failed. Easy to fix, altho a little tight. One month later it failed again. This time I wore gloves to prevent any oils from getting on the bulb. One week later it too has failed.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hello! This is my first tech post on this site. I am a veteran Mercedes-Benz owner (for over 24 years) and can almost pinpoint every reliability issue on any MB manufactured on the last 25 years.

But, I am clueless on Volvos.

The reason I do request your help is the following:

The local Volvo dealer has a good looking 2001 XC70 (Euro spec) with a non-Geartronic auto transmission and heavily loaded on options, with 48,000 miles on it. The price could be interesting...

I have read several posts and panic was my first reaction on reading about the problems with the automatic transmission.

Also, read about a few electrical issues.

The main questions are:

-My odds at having transmission trouble with this car (as the local dealer does not offers extended warranties).

-Any other major issues or areas I should pay attention to???

-Is it really worth it to buy a 2001, or should I wait for a later year model????

Has anyone actually succedded to remove the radio from a V70N or S60?

I have followed the instructions I have found here and on other places (e.g. at http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/s60_radio...le_removal.php), but got stuck when I have released the torx screws in front of the grear shifter and lifted out the AC panel as far as I can. The AC panel will just not come loose of the radio! I have tried to force it in any direction I can think of, and used as much force i dare - I don't want to break any plastic snaps though. What is the trick?

I like my pre-owned '03 XC70 that I recently purchased from the dealer but do have a few concerns...

1) Have just noticed an unpleasant smell from the vents when I turn the A/C button off... was under the impression it was serviced prioir to purchase with the 72km that includes air filter replacement but that might not have been so...does it sound like it just requires a new cabin filter or is this a sympton of something more expensive?

2) I've already changed a blown front bulb without problems but also had the infamous "Bulb Failure Position Light" come on a couple times now and managed to get if off by checking the rear bulbs and shaking things up a bit...

3) It has just started making the occasional squeak when I turn hard right?

4) My most significant concern is it occasionally has trouble gearing up when I first start accelerating or go around curves...it seems to rev but hang up for a few moments until it gears up. I've never had tranny problems before and the original sales guy said this was normal for the geartronic... to be fair, it seems to still be working fine appart from these occasional sputterings?

It is due for a servicing soon but I thought I would solicit comments on any these issues before taking it in

I have a 2002 V70 D5, that when I start and stop the engine I can feel feedback in the cabin as if the engines moves a little bit.
Also, when accelerating in lower revs (especially in low gears) it feels as if it's struggling a bit, not as bad as mis-firing, but maybe like a petrol running on a slightly dodgy spark plug.

Does anyone have any ideas ?

PS This is my first diesel, but I don't think this is just a diesel thing.

We have a 2001 volvo v70 which we bought new.
from the very beginning we had a problem with the transmission shifting down to early, whe getting off the throttle. We also had the ABS light coming on and they replaced the control unit with labour for $1200. Then they tried to tell my wife the had to replace the radiator because its leaking. I called the dealership right away and told them how can the radiator leak if there is never any coolant on the floor-so they didnt replace it. Now our car stalled after going in slow mode-so i think it's the throttle body thing.I'am starting to get p..... .
I checked the paperwork and found out the dealership did the 155 recall at 65000miles. We have around 80000miles now and is broken again.
Whats next? Transmission replacement? New motor?...
Should i buy american , german or what?

I was driving down a narrow backstreet today at about 20km/h, went over a raised pedestrian crossing and my car popped out of gear with a rather load knock. My gear lever would go where i told it to but no gear would engage so i pulled over and put it in P and it made a hideous scraping noise.

So i had it towed to my indy mechanic and he hoisted it and tells me its cv (shaft?) and not my transmission.

Can someone explain exactly what this means as i am autoilliterate. Can the harsh shifting i have been experiencing been a result of this part wearing out?

I thought CV joints would give me a bit more warning, i've had no noises in my steering.

I'm a college student with an '01 V70 XC. Love the car. It does have a few quirks, the ETM makes the throttle jumpy at 1500RPM cruising (surge to 1700, drip from 17 to 15), scraping sound coming from a warped rotor, causing a slight vibration when braking...

Anyway, I'm wondering what any of you have done to modify your cars. Any quick power upgrade tips? Any exterior mods or accessories?

As far as engine mods I'm talking a new air intake, a simple turbo boost change, etc.

Anyone lift it more for better off-road clearance? New metal skid plates?

Exterior- cosmetic ideas with all of the glass real estate or done anything with the plastic skirt panels? There is the wing that I've seen- does it improve aerodynamics enough to see a boost in MPG when highway cruising? I commute 500miles 6 times per year, and if I can save $20 a trip it will pay for itself in a year.

I've been looking at pics of the XC70 AllRoad concept and I would love to get my car looking better than stock, but I don't exactly need external battery terminals or a winch.

Currently I've just got box cross bars on the roof that I'll put back on in the winter after I get the threads de-rusted.

The list of accessories that Volvo has is pretty mundane or overly expensive.

After reading so many posts about V70-series troubles (especially, the XC) I'm less enthusiastic about upgrading my old 240-GLT to a new Volvo Wagon.

Is Volvo falling into the Ford-mode of make-it-as-cheap-as-possible, causing early failure of components (e.g., transmissions, wheel bearings, throtle bodies, other sensors, etc.)?

I'll be test driving a 2006 V70-XC this weekend but don't plan to close a deal on one until I'm satisfied the car will last me for ten or more years without many trips to the service department!!!

The audible and visual alarm on my V70 triggered this morning for no apparent reason. I shut it off with the remote, then it triggered every 40 minutes until I went out, started the car, and moved it. I thought I had solved the problem, but no luck. It started again tonight. Is there anyone with this experience and is there way to figure out what's going on? Will a dealer be able to diagnose the problem quickly by looking at the codes (the message simply read "alarm triggered, check car")?

I have a 2001 XC70 (in the USA). I think this has a standard HU-613 radio. I just installed a USA.SPEC PA11VOL ipod adaptor (sold as a Newo Pro-Link). Installation went fine once I found some links online as to how to do it - except that when connect the ipod to use it the radio to use it, the radio does not display "CD Changer" as an option, or displays "CD Error" when ipod is turned on and as CD is in the CD player. I have no CD changer fitted, but the radio needs to show this option in order to be able to select "Disc 5" to play fron the ipod. I presumed the adaptor would trick the radio into displaying this when plugged in.

Any ideas?

Also, I connected the power on the ipod adaptor with a tap into the RED wire going into the back of the raiod. I beleived this to be the power, but am nit sure. Anyone got a wiring diagram or know which is the poer wire please?

I have purchased a USSPA11VOL PA11-VOL this unit connects to the back of the stock radio and gives you a I Pod & aux interface. How do I get the radio out to connect this?

I am now in the market for a new (used) car. I have owned a 1997 Volvo 960 for several years, and though it hasn't been the best vehicle I've ever had, it has done the job. So, I've decided to look at the XC70 for my next car. My budget will allow a 2004, based on the prices I've seen on several auto auction sites.

Just to give a little background, I commute about 50 miles to and from work each day - so I'm looking for good fuel economy. I also have two small children, so I need a roomy, safe car for transporting them. Finally, since I'm on the road so much each day, I'd like to have a vehicle that provides a nice, comfortable ride and has a well-appointed interior.

To be completely honest, my first choice would be to buy a newer model 4-door truck - I've wanted a truck for quite a while - but the fuel economy issue prohibits a truck at this point. So, does anyone have any advice or input as to whether an XC70 would be a good vehicle given the criteria I've laid out? Also, are there any maintenance issues I should be aware of with this model? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.

I just picked up my new 2007 XC70, drove it 70 miles on the interstate, and then discovered dealer had put 31 psi on the driver's side tires, and 47.5 psi on the passenger side---after I had specifically asked for 38 psi all round. The car shakes over 60 mph, even after spin balance by Volvo. Then within 2 days the Selectronic/Manual function breaks.

Did this dealer create long term problems for me with this negligence?
