Hey there,
New to the forum. Curious if anyone's replaced the upper engine mount on the V70?

I bought the part from Volvo. My father-in-law's long-time Volvo mechanic said the swap was not a problem and no special tools required other than a torx bit.

1) Looks like the cold air intake across the top needs to come out.
2) Then the larger of the two black covers on the top removed
3) loosen the two mounting brackets
4) replace the mount

Any experts out there?

Brake Booster replacement:

First start by Disconnecting the Battery.

Then open the hood and remove the Upper torque mount cross member.

Next remove the Air filter housing.

The remove the Big Cover over the Relay/fuse panel under the hood.
Once the cover is off remove the 13mm nut for the Positive cable.

Then remove the 2 screws securing the Relay box into place.(one of the screws is under where the positive cable just came off)
Unplug the one harness from the box and move the box to the side.

Then reach under and unplug the ABS module. There is 2 plugs. One you have to push a little tab and fold the cover back to release the plug. The other is 2 push tabs then pull.

Ok here is where it will get a little tricky. Look where the ABS pump motor assembly bolts to the body. There is 3 10mm bolts remove them and make sure the pump motor is loose.(No need to disconnect the lines)
Remove the 2 screws holding the Master Cylinder to the booster.
Unplug the sensor in the booster. Remove the Line and Valve from inside the booster.

That should be about it from outside till the booster is loose.

Inside the car:

Remove the Lower dash panel on the drivers side.
Then remove the clip holding the brake pedal to the booster. Either slide the Pin out or slide the Arm off.(Forget which it has). Then remove the 4 13mm screws holding the Booster to the Firewall.

Now go back outside:

Then slide the Master cylinder off of the Booster and kind of pull and move to the side.
Might require Carefully bending some of the lines. Then slide the Booster out.(Most of the times it takes some work to get it slid out. It might take some time to slide it out just take your time.

Then install in reverse order.

It will take a little time to do. About 1/2 a day at home with Hand tools.

Sorry forgot to tell you to make sure you check the adjustment on the brake light switch when you are done.

I have recently bought a V70 T5 and it needs a 3 year service. I would prefer to not use a main dealer but a trustworthy independent Volvo specialist.

Can anyone recommend someone in the Chippenham/Wiltshire/Bristol area.

I have a 2004 v70 and I have a very faint muffled sound to no sound, sometimes, coming from the rear speakers. Anyone have any ideas

Hello fellow V70 drivers!

I've had problems with my car's transmission for over a year now and so far I have not found a proper solution. Today I came across this forum and it seems to be the most comprehensive source of information on various Volvo issues on the net, so perhaps somebody here has noticed a problem similar to mine and can suggest a fix.

The car is 2001 V70AWD (not XC) with Geartronic transmission. The car has now done about 132,000 km and the problem started to occur at 105,000 km. Basically the problem has two ways of expressing itself. First, the computer warning light comes on and says "Transmission service required". Second, the gearbox occasionally acts weird -- sometimes the upshifts are late and engine revs get unusually high during acceleration; sometimes while standing in traffic, the car seems to want to "jump" into 1st while my foot is on the brake and I have to press the brake pedal strongly to avoid the car starting to move against my will; sometimes the car hesitates to start accelerating when I lift my foot from the brake and press the accelerator (for a second the car just stands and then "jerks" into motion).

The odd thing about this problem is that all these symptoms come and go and they are not directly related -- the computer warning sign may come while the car is behaving normally, and unusual gearbox activity may occur while there is no warning sign on the computer.

I have been to my local Volvo dealer a couple of times with this and they have told me that the error code refers to a mechanical fault in the gearbox. Their suggested solution is replacing the gearbox and they have clearly stated that they cannot repair my existing box. Since replacing the gearbox would cost me about 7,500 USD, I am not very excited about this. The problem has not prevented driving (I have done over 25,000 km since it first occurred), so I have treated this as an annoyance and not as a very serious issue. Nevertheless, I would like to know if there could be a less costly solution to this transmission problem than replacing the gearbox.

Any ideas?

My local Volvo dealer in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada sells 2004 V70R with 271,000 Miles or 436,400KM on it for 13,000$ Canadian.
Any opinion on this high milage? Should I take a look at it and what to be aware of?

2001 xc v70 engine grabing; pulling back ...

Unsure what to attribute this to..
the sensation is that the car grabs or slips /brakes/pulls back as if its skipping a gear.. as when your bicycle chain starts to derail. this tends to occur at speeds below 35mph. as i accelerate or slow down...
happened yesterday, 11/18/08, as i was looking for parking space at the university; therefore, i was going maybe 10 mph..


Comments , thoughts appreciated as to any areas to check: gear shift sensor , gear shift, valve body.., software these were some terms used by the service department.

• september 07 : electronic throttel module intake replaced at n/c.
  
• DTC code current : ECM 9400 Brake Pedal Sensor : signal too high. i was told these codes reset themselves. the code is intermitent so at times it reads "DTC is found not active"
• CCM-0007 : passenger compartment temperature sensor faulty: status :"DTC is found active"

Hi, my 2001 V70 (non-turbo) gets quite bad vibrations at 45-65 miles, especially when accelerating peaking at about 55 miles. If loaded, vibrations start a bit earlier. When the car goes faster, these vibrations calm down. Even when completely lifted from the ground, and the wheels taken off, the vibration is still present. They tried propping up the engine a bit assuming that the mounts are bad but to no avail. It looks like shafts are a bit bent and wheel hubs are far from fully perfect (140,000 miles on the car) but the vibrations are too strong to be caused just by these factors. CV joints seem OK in a sense that they are firm, make no noises and seem to be lubed. What else do you think it can be? Thank you!

Just joined and I am from Ottawa in Canada, previously lived in the UK, moved here 5 yrs ago.

Just bought a used 2002 XC70, and very pleased with it, just has a cruise control issue which needs sorting out!

Previously owned its baby brother a V40 in the UK and that was truely a superb car, hence thats why I have went out a got another Volvo...I love them. Hopefully this one will be just as reliable as the V40.

There are pleated shades on either side of the sunroof of my car that are torn, only go up about half way. Seal OK, which is the important thing, but I got the new ones in an insurance deal, and wonder if anyone knows how they go on without having to remove roof glass? tanks

2001 xc70, first DIY oil change on this car, last one done at Midas Muffler...there was no crush ring on drain plug, or hung up on pan. Put my own on, seems OK.

Filter on so tight it broke fcogroton.com filter tool at the wimpy tack welds, neighbors filter pliers would only scratch the filter! I had to put 5 qts in with old filter remaining while I investigate.

There is no nut/allen socket to undo before applying the filter wrench, right?

Do I have an oil cooler? Do I need to drain it seperately if so? Manual quotes fill amounts for oil/filter change and oil/filter/oil cooler drain...where is that, now?

Some folks mention turbo exceptions, like filling the filter before putting it back on the car? HELLLLLPPPPPP!!!!!

Ok....can anyone tell me if I''ve F''ed somthing up? I JUST got my 2001 V70 2.4T. After changing the oil and messing with the car this afternoon, the ABS light is on and the message board says ABS Service needed. So here''s what I did to maybe screw it up... I decided to check the air filter. Well I was curious what was under the box on the left side of the engine bay...sorta looked like another air filter box but it had two metal computer things in it that sorta looked like hard drives. Of course I dropped the metal clips that held the top on, but dropped them under and outside it. Are either of those things related to the ABS. Second thing I did was shampoo the carpets in the whole car. Is there anything under the carpet that is related to ABS that could have gotten wet? OH, I also adjusted the parking break....would that do it? Thanks in advance!

I hope that you can assist. We bought a V50 T5 at the end of 2004 and while we still had 1 child and it was a great runner and had enough space for day to day requirements. We recently had another child and have realised that the V50 is a little too small for the additional Car seat and pram. Even when we went on holiday we already needed to use the roof mounted "torpedo". I have recently been offered a XC70 2.5T Transverse AWD 2006 for an additional R120 000,00 (After Trade in of our car). ( South Africa R10 = +/- $1.00)

On the other hand I have also been offered a 2008 Volvo XC70 D5 (Diesel) Geartronic with 29 000km 's on the clock for an additional R260 000,00. When I drove this car it seemed much larger on the outside than the 2006 model and the Lag between acceleration and response also seemed too long.

I would like to find out if either of these upgrades will leave me disappointed in terms of power ( The T5 has a really good power output), Space ( Is there that much more space ?) and overall satisfaction? One thing that irritates me with the V50 is that there is not much space behind the drivers seat when I am driving as I am 6'2" (185cm)tall.

The V50 T5 currently has a consumption of 14litres per 100Km - I'm not sure how to convert that into Miles per Gallon - maybe some smart person can work that out for me - and then everyone else can understand.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated !!

Question about the behaviour of the temp gauge on my wifes 2001 V70 2.0T Auto. I don't drive this car very often & just noticed the gauge seems to sit very low during normal driving (20% or so) - only climbing to mid-range when in heavy traffic.
This happened on my other car suddenly & I changed the thermostat to remedy the situation as I knew that this wasn't normal.
Is this normal on the V70 or no? Is the thermostat weak link in the cooling system? The cabin heats up well on heaters. There's no errors on the dash, she'd been getting 19 mpg around town, I've been getting ~26mpg on mainly motorway runs.

I was hoping that someone could confirm what the correct power steering fluid is for a 2002 V70 non-turbo. I noticed that the reseviour was low. Pulled out the manual and it simply stated that you should use ATF fluid. Went down the the local auto parts and the guy behind the counter kind of looked at me strange when I said that the fluid was for the power steering.

That is what happened to my car last night when I ran over a sheet of metal on the road. It was a very small bump and next thing I know I hear a rattling sound and I find that rod is broken.

From my limited knowledge I think the sway bar is broken. Is that true?

Can I just go to any old volvo wrecker and get a V70 sway bar and install it myself?

Hello! I was looking to replace the front pads and rotors as well as the rear pads on my 2001 V70 (FWD). I was looking at several websites and saw there were some pads listed for 15", some for 16", and some which didn't list a wheel size at all. Is there a different requirement for the 16" wheels?

Also, are there any suggestions for parts I should buy (either OE or ceramic)?

My 2004 XC70 set a DTC for cyl # 1 mis fire. I replaced the spark plugs and the coil pack for that cyl and the code came back.

I bought the car used from a Volvo dealer even before I took delivery they had to change the door locking mechanism this delayed delivery for 3 days! The car then developed a series of faults all of which pointed to the MAF sensor so they replaced this under the warrantry.

The car eats bulbs 2 headlight 4 taillight 2 numberplate in 9 months! Now when I come off the throttle and brake to say turn into a side road it cuts out! fantastic automatic and power steering several times I have come close to crashing.

The car at random displays an 'Emissions Service Required' light but runs perfectly until I try and brake and turn (see above).

I contacted Volvo customer service HoHoHo who said in light of my cars age and lack of service history! they would not pay to replace the electronic throttle body, then a week later they sent me a nice letter offering me an extended warrantry!!!

I have had the car serviced at independant Volvo dealers using Volvo parts so maybe I don't show up on their radar.

I like the car it is very nice and as I do about 1200miles a week i enjoy the easy ride and comfort but why is it so unreliable? I have a 187 Alfa Spider that never fails to start never cuts out!

Can anyone shed some light on my Volvo (Is Volvo the new Lada?) before I sell it and buy a Skoda.

The 2001 XC70 sat in the driveway for a week while we were away, and there were some wicked rains in that time. Got home,dry day, drove it 12 miles, shut it off; got back in 10 minutes later, drove it home, shut it off. Got back in 10 minutes later, started it up, and there was no response from the accelerator. (Shifted fine, idled fine). Shut it off, scratched head 5 minutes, restarted and all was well. Fine for two weeks now. Clues?

I have been reading in several of the Volvo forums about faulty fuel pump assemblies. (Leaking and gas odor.) I read somewhere that putting an epoxy in the “cavities” will cure the problem. I did this and it wasn’t a cure but a I mild fix. It slowed down the leak but hasn’t stopped it…. Plus the fuel line loses fuel pressure over time and it makes the car harder to start. (Still turns over but ya have to wait till the pressure builds up before it starts. Normally cranking the car for about 6-8 seconds.) I’ve decided to just break down and replace the entire assembly. Can someone tell me the tricks to removing the fuel pump assembly? I know how to access the pump by removing the vertical part of the back seat and it looks like it’s a few fuel lines and electrical connections. Just relieve fuel pressure undo the lines and disconnect electrical and pull it out?

Why is it so hard to find a good manual for this car? If you have any suggestion please let me know.

New member - Hi folks - with a problem of course......!!

2003 V70 D5 suddenly puts up dashboard message 'check brake lights'. I do so, neither side working, so assume its the bulbs (both at once....??) and replace. Still out. High level LED bar on tailgate working fine by the way.

Check fuses - boot fuse box no.3 and 14 intact (as identified from handbook) and have live feed. Under bonnet fuse 12 intact.

Earth from rear light assembly fine (indicators use same earth and no problem at all).

So.....?? As the LED bar is working the brake pedal switch must be working - unless it has separate contacts for the LED bar and the 21w circuits. Anyone know whether that is the case?

If so, where is the brake pedal switch so I can test / replace?

Any help/ideas/wiring diagrams much appreciated. A

It appears that the air filter box must be removed in order to reach the low beam bulb. Has anyone here done this? Any help or tips would be appreciated.

I own a 2004 XC70 and i'm having a couple of drivetrain issues with the car (suprise suprise). When shitfing into drive or reverse, there is a pause, and then it clunks into gear, as well as clunking during downshifts while accelerating and stopping, which leads me to believe that something (be it a solenoid out of range or a crack in t he piston itself) is out of whack with the L/R piston. However, it also makes the sound of a bad C/V joint plunger when accelerating forward/backward/turning. The guy at the local shop tells me it is most likely the angle drive transfer case (appx $1,700), although he has not driven the car yet. could a bad transfer case also cause the shifting problems (only in low gears)?

(16 Oct 08) 52 plate V70 D5 auto - 99500 miles..cold start problem this AM for the first time. After about 3 mins of cranking, it started. Outside air temp around 7'C after a chilly night. Heater coil light worked as normal.

So, taken the car to a local Volvo specialist. No fault codes showing, mechanics reckon it's an injector problem. They have quoted me £30/injector to have them checked + 1 hour labour (£52 +vat) to get them out and in. They can get any faulty injectors refurbished for £125 each with 1 yr guarantee. That sounds cheaper than Volvo!

Volvo dealer quoted £250/injector plus labour.

Car is at the garage now. Should know more in the next few days. Will keep you posted.

If this works, I will give people the garage details for those that are interested. They have done work for me before and are very good. Garage is in Norfolk, UK

Ok...here's a quick update. (20 Oct 08) The garage phoned me today and said they confirmed the "bad starting" the next morning. So, out came all 5 injectors and off to their local "specialist" for testing. Anyway, out of the 5, he has found two unserviceable. So, had a chat with the garage and they have agreed with me for ALL 5 to be refurbished, as it's likely the others will go wrong soon too. As I am having all 5 done, I have managed to negotiate a small discount which is a help as this is not a cheap job. However, the final negotiated price is half Volvo's price and I am getting a 1 year warranty on the job too.

As mentioned before, if anyone wants the Norfolk garage details, please contact me. All work done by them so far has been to a high standard. They also provide a courtesy car for £10/day if you have to travel to get there.

I will update again when I get my car back in a couple of days time.

Is there any way of telling if i have self levelling shocks in the rear of my car?
I have a V70D5 '02. I am trying cost up replacement, apparantley they have a light misting...

With ditching the truck, I now need to start towing the 2,500 lb boat with the 2005 v70. Last week I put a hitch on it and the wiring harness. It tows well, except for the fact that it's super low to the ground. The trailer is set up so that it only puts about 175lbs tongue weight on the ball, but the car is just naturally really low in the back.

Does anyone have any suggestions of maybe upgrading the springs and/or shocks? Maybe airbags?

I've been all around google but haven't had any luck on finding anything. Thx.

I have a 2005 xc70 with 39k miles,my son has driven it for the last 10k.I think the brakes should be serviced.Should I do pads and rotors? There is not any noise,just being careful.Is there a service chain that won't pick you off?

I'm getting 44mpg (Imperial gallon) overall after 1,500 miles. XC 70 2004 (60,000 miles).

This seems pretty good. What are other members experiencing?

I'm considering installing a hitch on my 98 XC Wagon and wanted to know if there are any concerns/issues with doing this.
Plans are to pull a single trailer with a PWC on it.
Might even pull a double if permissible??
