(6 DEC 2005) I talked with Sales at Dension USA about iPod connectivity for the S40 and V50...

They were very nice and indicated that the ice>Link:Fibre iPod connector product that they are developing may be ready for the S40/V50 models in April or May 2006...

The other question that I had for Dension was: Will the ice>Link:Fibre be compatible with Volvo's Premium Sound System package offering for the S40/V50? Answer? Too early to tell, as Dension has a full suite of testing they will need to do with each radio system...My guess is that, since the Premium Sound package uses M.O.S.T modular component fibre technology, it is fairly likely...but that's speculation...

All that said: for me, sooner the better as i'm gonna pull the trigger on a new V50 and think it's time to put my 93 civic si to bed...

Hello, new to the forum and hoping I can get an 'experts' opinion.

My 2005 Volvo S40 2.4i just threw a P0101. I understand what may cause this code, that's not why I'm writing.

My question is:

It sounds like there may be a vacuum leak near the firewall of the car. What's weird is it sounds like the leak cycles on and off. So I guess my question is what part may be connected to a vacuum line and cycle on and off during an idle? I used carb cleaner to try and find a leak, but never heard any difference on hoses/intake/etc...

Other symptoms:

During idle, the RPM's fluctuate about +- 50RPM (it doesn't register on the tach, can hear it by sound very clearly though).

This fluctuation ONLY happens when the vacuum leak sound goes AWAY. When the vacuum leak sound cycle's on, the idle is very consistant.


Any ideas experts?

Hi I am a complete newbie to the world of Volvo, im am looking at buying a 2004 s40 T5 Heico Spotiv edition 57000 km. I was just wanting to know if there are problems with the s40 i should be aware of reliabilty etc. I also have a w8 passat wagon and if you read the forums for that car its a nightmare.Any advise would be appreciated.

I have a 2006 S40 T5. Did my first cabin air filter replacement on my own. When reattaching the accelerator pedal, one of the studs ( last one) started to spin to where the nut would not thread on. I started the threading by hand and only got an eighth of a turn with a 1/4 in drive socket and it started spinning. You can't get any good force on this nut so there was not much force applied. Now I cannot get the nut on or off. Any thoughts? The warranty is still in force. Any chance the warranty would help me?

I am new to these forums and am having a major problem with my 2004.5 S40 T5.
I have a severe waterleak on the floor behind the driver's seat anytime that it rains. I have brought the car to my service center and they have not been able to find anything wrong with it (the checked all of the drain holes for the sunroof, trunk, ect..) I have also called the Volvo customer care # and they basicly told be that my car is out of warrenty and I would need to bring it to the service center. I am getting very frustrated. we had rain this weekend and I vaccuumed out almost 3 gallons of water from the back seat floor. Has anyone else had this problem, or any suggestions

I few month ago I got a GPS Garmin nuvi 670 unit and recently a 350 for my wife.
Since I had a GPS on a rental durring a trip in France I had to have one!
It has really become handy even if it is just to know where I am when looking for places, to found short cuts durring heavy traffic or simply to drive through unknown streets while trying to park for example.

Long story short, I made a custom Volvo S40 T5 car icon. It took me quite some time ( too much time really) but I'll be happy to share it with other garmin owners if some are intersted. I could also customise it for you but maybe in exchange for some service or tips since it took me quite a bit of time to create the different 3D views...

I'm afraid that I have a quite embarassing question.
I have my first flat with the S40 and i'm trying to change my wheel to the spare one

But ...
Is there a 6th bolt behind the plastic with the logo ??
Because I just cannot remove the wheel ... it's crazy .. it doesn't move at all.

Is there any anti theft feature or somthing ?
I checked the manual, it appears that I just have to remove the wheel ..

I locked the car ad the key was inside the trunk
Why volvo allows the the doors to be locked by the telecontrol
while a door/s and/or trunk are still open is beyond me
The only way to access the key inside the trunk is to break the window.
I am 1000km from home and need to get back soon, so I cannot wait for a new window to arrive. Driving thru the rain with a carsboard is not fun.
Question: How easy is to pullout the taillight fixture from outside to get the key from the trunk ? It is cheaper to replace the light fixture.

I just sold my older volvo and upgraded to an '07 s40.

The car has halogen lights and i want to install Xenon headlights. Has anyone done this, and if so what type of kit did you use/recommend?
Also has anyone installed Xenon bulbs into the fog lights?

I am also wondering about iPod integration. I know that the radio has an AUX input but i saw on the 2009 they now have a USB input. USB would be preferred as it also charges the iPod. is the 2007 radio compatible? is there anyway to install USB input? (i assume not but just wondering)

I saw that the dealer can install an aftermarket dock/iPod integration kit into the car. Has anyone had this done? Can something like this be bought outside of the dealer?

I have an '05 S40 and want to get Sirius installed. Has anyone had a retailer install it in their S40 ('05 or '06)? I've been to Circuit City, Best Buy, ABC and one local guy and none of their installation specs even lists an S40. I already know that the FM transmitter is no good so that isn't an option. I also know the stereo (premium) has a lot of proprietary wiring so I don't want anyone trying to wing it.
Has anyone had it done and if so can you give me some feedback?

I was giving my car the usual walk around for knicks/scratches and that type of thing when a noticed a small section of the rear bumper sticking out on the driver's side. Is this something that's easy to fix or does it actually require taking the bumper off and re-seating it? I've attached an image of it.

I have a 2005 S40 with the high performance sound system. I'd like to fit a sub (OEM or Aftermarket). Can anyone advise me of the procedure?

So far I've got.

1. Get head unit re flashed by a dealer to enable control of a sub.

2. Take it to a specialist.

Will I need anything extra. Is the wiring already fitted? Do I need an adaptor for the optical wiring? Is it worth getting the OEM or better to fit an aftermarket one.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Have an 04 fwd with 2.4L engine B5244S4 that needs timing belt service. Thinking of doing it myself. Does anyone have the procedures for this service?

I have a noise coming from the transmission when I go from Park to Reverse. It is something like a clunk as it engages. Took car to Volvo and Mechanic told me that all make the same noise.Any one have the same problem?

I am trying to change the rear brakes of my 2005 S40 and I can't get the caliper bolts to move at all. I have tried and they wont budge on both rear tires. I can't get a really big torque wrench in because it wont fit in this car, but I am putting more pressure then I normally have to

go the bolts off, but now can't find the piston reset tool...no one seems to carry it...doh

I have a 2005 S40 T5 with Built in Sat Nav. The Sat Nav works but does not lift up any more when switched on. I assume a belt or something has broken and want to remove it to have a look.

Does anyone know how to remove the unit?

When I went to unlock my car yesterday, the doors unlocked as usual but, I noticed that the trunk also opened. I went and shut it - in which it immediately opened again. This continued many times. Even when the trunk is open, the mechanism is still making the "clicking" noise as if it is opening.
We tried to change the remote battery in the key, changing to the spare key, taking the battery out of the key but - it continued to keep opening. Also, tried closing/opening manually with key many times but, still keeps opening.
Thinking something electrical in the latch??

Hi, I got nokia e75 and i have problems with bluetooth connecting and calling, almost everything works fine, my phone connects fine, phone book synchronize as well, but when i want to dial a name from my phone book it says WAIT PLEASE and nothing happens. If i disconnect and reconnect my phone then i can make a call. This is really very unpleasant, can anybody help me ?

My car power seat doesnt work... Both side. I checked and changed the fuse (they werent burn) and still not working. The power seats started to have some kind of hesitation and just totally stop working after 2 weeks.

As my carpet is wet when raining, I assume that if the module is under the carpet, water will damage it. My question is where is the module located on a s40 2004.05?

The carpet is only wet on the driver side and behind the driver seat. I test the drain by pouring water in the sunroof drain and water was getting out behing the car tires. I checked the hoses and no leak were found. What can it be?

Got some issues with my car, the problems are listed below, any ideas/suggestions would be greatful.

Symptoms:

1. Loud noise from front passenger side wheel area.
- only does it on right turns or when going over bumps
- only happens when the car is cold, when the car is warm the noise goes away
- vibration from 40 mph onwards, quite severe.
- car does not create the sound when turning and in neutral, so it only occurs when the car is under load.
- sound does not happen in reverse

Things that we have changed
- 3 weeks ago Volvo replaced the front shocks on both sides.
- we replaced the front passenger side CV's and axle.

Im thinking that maybe its the gearbox??

2. The check engine light is on in the vehicle. the codes we got are as follows.
-2281, 0300, 0301, 0302

The engine was missfiring, the 2281 means that there is an air leak between the Mass Air meter and the throttle body, the 301,302 will be the cylinders that are missfiring. 300 is that there was a missfire.

Things that we have changed.
- 3 weeks ago volvo said they found moisture in the cylinders and dried them out and replaced the spark plugs, they said this was the cause of the problem
- we replaced the mass air meter
- we replaced the ignition coils as per volvo's recommendation.
- we pulled the plugs, they all look clean with no moisture.

Volvo thinks its in the ignition, yet they havn't solved it yet.

which obd2 readers people are using to get specific volvo codes? i saw the scanguage2 on ipd's website, does it give volvo codes?

i was under the impression the obd2 system was created to give standardized codes for errors, but my trips to autozone and deciphering codes from vw's are getting annoying. i'll invest in a <$200.00 USD obd2 code reader if it will give the volvo codes i have seen people post on this board.

a while ago when we bought our s40 used, the sunroof rattled really badly. we took it to the dealer and they did fix it but now it still rattles but only when the sunroof is open all the way (not tilt). is that normal?

Picked up my Black 2005 S40 2.0D Sport on Wednesday. 40K miles on the clock, full leather, premium sound system, and the 18' BBS Split Rims. Took me a while to find to the right car.

Having come from an Audi I a very impressed so far.

The only thing I think would improve the looks would be a tad lower ride on the 18's. Any info on whether changing purely the springs to say -35mm affects the ride too much?

First time posting a question. I own a 2007 S40 and to be straight forward, it is the worst car I have ever owned. So many problems I do not even know where to begin. Of course, I am 1,500 miles over 50k so I no longer have a warranty and I really could not afford to buy an extended one. Also, the dealership and Volvo USA would not extend my warranty. So, here I am with a question.

My A/C has decided to stop working. I no longer hear the "clicking" of the compressor. At the shop today I was told it was the compressor clutch, which it most likely is, but I did not ask if it was low on freon. Could this be the cause as well?

While I am here I should also ask has anyone ever had to replace their coolant reservoir cap? I was checking my fluids and noticed the reservoir was near empty, but there are no leaks. No leaks was confirmed by my mechanic. Could a faulty cap be allowing the coolant to vaporize as it heats in the car?

Anything helps.

This is my first post on here. I bought a 2008 s40 2.4i a few months back. It's a great car and I'm sure I'll become much more active on here. Like many other people, I'm a little annoyed with the software racket they run. It's nice having the ability to add and remove features, but they overcharge for it!

I wanted to add the trip computer option to my car. I saw that the software isn't too expensive and I already have the correct turn signal stalk with the scroll and reset button. I went to the dealership and they said the software was $20 and labor would be about $100. Of course it's a lot of money for a simple software install, but I figured it's not entirely unreasonable. I said if they can do it for that rate it's approved, any more just doesn't have the right cost/benefit ratio. Well, they didn't install it because they said it would be $600. They claim that I need the accessory module. Does anyone know if this is true? I really don't like the service people at my dealership and in general I don't think they know what they're talking about. Pretty much every time I've been there I have had to come back a second time. I know the accessory module is needed for some upgrades, but is the trip computer one of them?

I don't see any reason they would lie to me because they knew I wouldn't pay it. They didn't even come out and ask me, they just auto declined it on the basis that I told them I wouldn't pay much more than $100. With that in mind, I don't think they're lying in order to get me to spend $600. I just think they're mistaken.

If it does require this accessory module, is that something that i can install myself and just bring the car in for the software? Also, what other doors are opened by having this module?

Hi, I'm new to this forum, and I'm looking for some help with a problem I'm having with my 06 S40 2ltr Diesel.

This morning I started the car as normal, and took it out of the garage to take my daughter to work. I left the car ticking over while I shut the garage door, and was waiting for her. After a few minutes, she was still in the house, so I switched off the car and went to get her. She was just coming out as I got to the door, so we went back to the car, and I started it up again, engaged first gear, and released the brake. Our drive is a very slight incline down, so the car rolled forward as I released the clutch, pressed the accelerator, and it stalled. I started the engine again OK, but it did not rev up when I pressed the accelerator. the tick-over sounded a wee bit rough as if it was firing on 3 and a half cylinders. I sat there for a few moments pressing the accelerator a few times to see if it would rev up. I tried to drive away, but it stalled again. I started it once more with the same result, but this time, after a few minutes it came OK and I was able to rev up, and drive off.

It's been ok for the rest of the day, but my wife had the same problem a few weeks ago when she went shopping.


Sorry that my first post has been so long and I rambled on a bit, but I wanted to get the sequence of events down in case that has some bearing on the problem.

Well hello folks. My first problem post. Thought I had nothing better to do yesterday morning but jump in the car get it started and all warmed up to take my son to school. But to my surprise I was confronted with "KEY ERROR...PLEASE TRY AGAIN", so I did and again and again with both keys, no joy. So it was a very fast walk to school which was good as it was -3 degrees C yesterday.
Back to the car I had to watch it being unceremoniously dragged off to the dealers. I called today to get an update to be told that a new steering column was on order?
Have any of you guys had something similar and can it be a steering column!! He says incredulously.

I have a 2005 Volvo S40. Last week I had the battery and starter replaced. Today the car will not turn on. I can turn on lights and stereo, but nothing else. I get a 'immobilizer' message. The dealer said I need to tow the car over so that they can run a diagnostic. Is this my only option? Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

I just bought a 2010 s40i. I love the iPod integration, but have one problem I have yet to be able to figure out -- is it possible to PAUSE music on my iPod through the dashboard?

I ask because I listen to audiobooks while I drive, and lately I notice my iPod loses my place in the book when I just turn the car off. I'd like to PAUSE/STOP the playback to ensure that my place is kept.

Hi I'm a newbie to this forum and have owned my S40 for 18 months now. Hopefully someone who frequents these pages can shed a little light on my problem and generously provide me with a solution

The washer on my S40 is not working. The fluid holder has been topped up and the hose checked and all is ok. I have come to the conclusion that a fuse or relay must have blown so I have had a good look at the owners manual and the windscreen washer is not listed in the fuse diagram. The only description that comes near is the headlight washer which is listed as number 11. Has anyone else had the same problem and mangaged to change the relay/fuse?. If so, if you could provide me with the relay/fuse number or location it would be much apreciated.

Hi-- I'm new and from the Midwest in the USA. Since we have 4 distinct seasons here, I need a good all-season tire.

I have an 05 S40 T5 FWD w/ a 6-speed manual transmission, but I've only had it for about 6 months. The OEM tires that are on it now (Michelin 205/55R16 Energy MXV4) are really worn-- they did fine in the summer and fall, but now with some ice on the road, the traction is terrible. I don't want to get seperate snow and summer tires.

I love the low resistance of the MXV4 tires, and I think they contribute to the good gas milage I've had with this car. Does anyone have any experience with new MXV4's in the snow/ice? Any good?

Can anyone recommend a good all-season tire? I've read through www.tirerack.com, and I intend to buy there since I've had a good experience there before. I haven't found many reviews though for all-season tires; most California or Florida guys only recommend summer or high performance tires.

If you have aluminum rims I found the easiest and safest way to clean them.

Dilute 2/3 liquid toilet bowl cleaner with 1/3 hot water.
Apply either with a spray bottle or with a soft brush to the rims
Allow to set for 3 mins.
Pray off with hose
Wipe down rims with a dry clean cloth.

It's not a big deal, but try to avoid getting the cleaner onto the side walls of your tires.

I just recently bought a used 2004.5 S40 with 12,000 miles. I love it! However I have noticed a funny noise when I turn the wheel, not a squeak, but more of a "grunting" type sound if that makes any sense at all. Other than that it is great! Anyone know what I am talking about? Thanks!

I'm a Volvo Tech and in 2009 I had 6 cars with "Steering lock" malfunction. The problem then disables the starter and car will not start. The replacement part and labor is not that expensive but in order to install the new part it requires programming which can be problem for those shops/individuals who donot possess the volvo programming tool. So, I eneded up dismanttling one of these lock motors to find out the cause of the failure. If the steering lock message appears it first needs to be diagnosed and tested to make sure that the locking device is faulty and if it is here is some information on how to fix it. Since the same part will be reinstalled, if the repair is successfull there would be no need for any programming.

With the Lock motor removed from the car, first the cover needs to be removed and this can be some what of a problem. When the part was manufactured, the cover is held by pressing/punching the particular area on the side of the main housing into the grooved area on the cover. To remove the cover first grind-off the punched/pressed areas on both side of the housing. Then remove the black plastic cover on the top of the motor and then push off on the cover (center metal piece). Be carefull not to damage or bend the cover. With cover removed, remove 4 philips screws holding down the PC board, carefully pry up the boards and the motor assy off the housing.

Now from this point on I have found different problems which I will explain here. Few of the lock motors I fixed had problem with the black plug attaching terminal solder to the PC Board. Simply resolder the terminals properly to the PC board. Be extremely carefull not to damage the electronic componenets adjacent to the area of solder on the PC Board.

Majority of the lock motors had problem with the Lock rod limit switch located below the rod on the PC board. The switch is a simple toggle switch which is acitvated when the lock rod moves up and down. There is a plastic insulation seal on the push rod of the switch and it also covers the rectangular area inside the switch. Due to lubricant coming into contact with this rubber part, it starts streching (gets fat)and then causes the tinny switch to stay activated, hence causing erroneous signal & malfunction of the system. There is no need to replace this switch nor to remove it from the PC Board. Carefully using a razor blade pry out the sides and remove the top cover of the switch along with the plastic insulator seal and the switch push rod.

Clean the switch carefully, then install the rod and the cover without the plastic piece and test the unit. You should be able to hear the switch clicking On+Off. Using an OHM Meter test the three terminals of the switch for proper operation. Clean all the parts, remove the motor from the PC Board by carefully pulling it away. Install the motor in position in the bottom of the housing. Carefully insatll the PC board (watch and make sure that the motor terminals line up and slide-in properly and without any presure. Install the screws and plug the unit to the car for testing. If unit is functional, then simply trim the rubber insulator seal and install it properly in the switch. Assemble the unit and install the housing cover holding it in positon using (4 min) JB Weld. Make sure you use small amount of lube on the plastic gears and the lock push rod. As mentioned no programming is needed since the part was already programmed to the vehicle.

I have a 2006 S40 and over the last two weeks have developed two problems.

The external temp sensor shows inaccurate readings.
Overnight start has it at --- or -40 F.
Readings fluctuate off and on and after a few stops/starts it becomes OK.

The remote door locks on and the entire control panel on the driver door go dead at random. The window controls and locks on the other doors continue to work.
It's a totally random failure of the driver side control panel.

I have been to the dealer twice. They did the greasing solution and whatever was campaign 167A, B & C. Some kind of sotware upgrade??

I see where other people in the forum have had similar issues, did anybody actually get the issue resolved? If so, please post what fixed the issue.

Hi All-
I have an 06 S40, had it since new and every year at this time (winter) I start to have the same issue with the radio. Either it comes on and it nothing but static.... or it is silent. Doesn't matter if you try to change from am, fm to cd. I have had it to the dealer multiple times about the same issue. All that has been done is a software upgrade...and then it happens again, since by the time they get the car it is working again. Just picked it up from the dealer today and they were again unable to find anything wrong with it. Also the Navigation system had to be replaced at about 41,000 miles due some issues. At this point not sure what to do anymore, hope someone has had this issue and it has been correct. I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks!!

Will need a coded key or spare key to make operational. Does not replace existing key cylinder.

Just ordered a brand new 2010 S40 T5-AWD R-design and I'm busy choosing what rims to get put on it. I've looked everywhere and would just like the dimensions of the bolt pattern 5-108 confirmed as well as ideas for rims. The car comes stock with 17x7's which I'll use during winter, but I am searching for some 18"s for it.

Throw me your ideas, and if anyone has one and knows what bolt pattern is compatible and/or what offset there is. Let me know. Thanks all.
