My company is seeking a 02-04 S40 to test fit their new headlight. For this they will compensate you $100 and it will only take about 2-3 hours. Your car will not be driven and will be returned to you in the same condition. In case if there was any damage or damage caused by this, they will take full responsibility for it. We are located in La Palma, CA.

I have an 03 S40 and am looking to swap out the CD player and the speakers (they are the stock ones) for a new cd player (pioneer or alpine) and some new speakers and a sub.

I went into best buy a little while ago and they said they weren't sure if they could do it because the cd player on the s40 isn't the standard size. is this true or have people had experience with best buy replacing cd players on the s40? If they don't, any idea where I should look for a place that would be able to do the install for me? (I'm in Boston)

I haven't really done much work on cars so I don't know if I'd be comfortable doing the speakers/cd player myself, but if it's not that bad and if someone could point me to information on how to do that I'd appreciate it. I guess I'm looking for opinions on what my best option would be.

Can anyone maybe post a picture of how the s40 towbar looks(fixed one). Want to make my own towbar and need some ideas. Any help would be great.

The driver's side power seat has quit working on my 2001 S40. Fuse under hood checks good. All functions have stopped (fore and aft, up and down, seat back tilt). Is there another fuse for the seat adjustment system? Any other ideas?

I have little problem with fitting tyres to my T4.
I recently bought 18” 7,5J Alba Battle wheels which perfectly fit the car, but I don’t know what is the best tyre size for the car with this wheels.
Also tried different garages, but without result.
Please give me your advice.

I think I may need to replace the battery on my 2001 S40 soon. I have not found the battery listed in a couple of parts houses. Is it a factory only replacement or available from other sources. I am approx. 50 miles from nearest dealer.

Hi Everyone

Recently my empty waterbottle indicator light has appeared on my dash and despite filling the bottle to the brim and disconnecting the battery overnight, the light remains.

I just went into Volvo today they want about $200 (Australian) to remove the water bottle to get to the sensor and replace with a new sensor. I'm not too fussed as I've never in the history of driving ever run out of water in the bottle..

What I want to know is:

1. how do I get to the sensor?;
2. once there, can i merely unplug the sensor and would that mean that the light would turn off?

I don't care if that never works ever again, I just want the light off... I hate warning lights.

Hi I own a 2000 S40 and I want to know if i can progam by myself a keyless remote for my car?

Having a few prob's here, not sure if they're all connected or not. I've never worked on my S40 to any great extent, so not too familiar with it.

Firstly, when the engine idles, the rev's are not steady, they drop from around 750rpm to 400ish rpm then returns back to 750, drops, rises, drops, rises, you get the idea. It's not the tach, you can hear the engine speed increace / decreace too.

If you lightly blip the gas pedel / accelerator rev's pick up fine, then drop to around 200rpm (almost cuts out) then begins fluctuating again.

Last night when I started the car it sonded like someone had swapped it for a diesel and the engine management light was on. When I set off there was a distinct lack of power, felt as though I was towing a 2 tonne trailer, the more I put my foot down the less power I seemed to have.
The car has always made an electrical sounding whine when idling, but last night this whine was realy tinny sounding.

When I got to sister in laws I checked all of the vacuum hoses with engine running, couldn't find anything that affected the fluctuating idle.

For the whole of the two hour trip home it was fine.

I'm stumped and don't even know where to start, I hate hate hate modern engines.

i have read past entries to this forum re knocking noises in different parts of car and everyone seems to have a problem with noise when turning...well i have what seems to be the same problem but when driving straight and more often at low speeds. just seems to be a knocking noise from somewhere in suspension. it is not engine. sounds like a part of exhaust is loose or banging if you can imagine that ! i know that the rear suspension is weak as the car bottoms out if there is anyone in the rear. would a weak suspension be the only problem folks ?? and also..if im going to change rear suspension/shocks do i need to change springs too, and is it best to get original volvo springs. a friend told me it would be best !! anyone who can help here it would be very appreciated. this is driving me crazy ......

Hi, I am buying a 01 s40 but there is only one keyless entry remote and its broken! I've got two keys, and was hoping to get one or two of those combination remote/key things with the switchblade action. Do you know how much this might run me or if they are even available for the 01? Thanks!

The light/lights that indicates P R N D L on my S40 is out.

Before digging in to the console/shifter area I wanted to find out if
there are any tricks to gain access to these lamps.

I need to replace the indicator/cruise control column switch (i.e. LH) on my 1997 V40 because the nasty little cruise rocker switch in the end has failed.
I've had the column shrouds off and undone the only visible screw retaining the switch but it's all interlocked with the RH (i.e. wiper) stalk and the airbag connection ring. I've a nasty feeling I might have to remove the steering wheel and the airbag ring.
Does anyone out there have instructions for changing this switch please?
If the wheel has to come off, are there any precautions re airbag other than disconnecting battery and waiting 1/2 hour? Does the centre connector just pull out of the airbag unit?

1998 s40 2.0CD was locked on the remote keyfob this morning. This afternoon the car failed to respond to keyfob and wouldn't unlock. Spare keyfob used but no joy with that one either. Car will unlock normally with key but as soon as door is opened alarm goes off! You can start the car but alarm continues to sound as you are driving! Anyone any ideas at all? Not a problem using key to lock/unlock but can't drive round with hazards and alarm on.
Any help appreciated.

gotta little problem. for some reason my s40 suffers a large power drop when pulling away in first. any other gear's fine, just first. had the dealer check the ecu without fault, but i still can't solve it. is it just my left foot? if i play the clutch a bit i can overcome the drop, but pulling away with any degree of speed means overpowering the clutch and spinning the wheels. not good alongside a police cruiser!

Does anyone know what the fix would be if someone's car (like mine) was exhibiting this symptom?

My 2003 S40 kind of "jerks" when I put in into drive when the engine is cold (i.e. after sitting overnight). The dealers I've taken it to can't make it happen, as when I've taken it in, the engine is warm, and the problem goes away. The car has done this since it was pretty well new.

I'm currently at 74000km (and getting close to the end of my warranty), and I'd like to get this taken care of before I'm going to have to pay for it.

Any help is appreciated!!!

a quick question rgearding my S40 1.8xs 1999

ive noticed recently, when drving along once i put the car in to gear and lift up the clutch pedal, i get a slight click sound or clunk sound as the pedal comes about half way up. when drving at faster speed it doesnt seem to be as noticeable, but in lower gears 1-2-3 up to about 50 mph its pretty noticeable. It feels as if the pedal itself has something caught near it, but ive checked the general area out without moving anything and i cant see anything. any ideas ?

I'm posting this to give information to anyone else affected by this and hopefully receive some advice.

My wife's 60,000 mile 1997 V40 2.0 has started cutting out at a random time, usually after it is fully warmed up. It's not stalling - no spluttering or coughing - but just turns itself off and it will not restart for about 15 minutes. Attempting to restart before this is a waste of time - engine turns over but doesn't sound like there is a spark or any fuel going in. It sometimes seems to lose power on the road - coughs and hesitates a bit - but if you can keep it going the problem seems pass and it carries on without problem. It never happens when accelerating - only when off the gas and approaching or at idle.

So the cut out usually happens when warm and at lights, junctions, in traffic etc - usually on the way home from picking up the children at nursery - nightmare.

Dealer has checked the car top to bottom 3 times, run VADIS and now produced error code 116 ("the ECU is condemning itself.."), but I want to make sure that the £500 replacement will fix the problem. Auto Electrical specialist I took it to has told me there is some kind of conflict between the immobiliser and the ECU, but as I have a digital immobiliser he can't bypass it. Also Volvo ECU can't be accessed to diagnose the fault precisely (they are covered in a thick putty).

So, I'm shelling out for the dealer only ECU replacement. We've had this car since new and the cost per mile is now about 0 so I want to keep it.

Anyone else seen this or heard of this? I'm still not convinced that the ECU is causing the stall in the first place and don't understand why it would go wrong after 7.5 years.

Any advice, input etc very welcome!

Hi All

Had an unusual thing happen yesterday. I was puttering through traffic in 3rd gear doing about 40-50km/h and when I put my foot down 3/4 on the throttle, the car seemed to splutter and then surge. I managed to make the car do it a few times. It concerned me so I pulled over and lifted the hood to see if anything was amiss.

All the hoses seemed to be connected and nothing to suggest anything was wrong. I turned the car off and waited for a bit whilst I was looking under the hood.

When I started the car and took off again it was fine and hasn't missed a beat since. I pulled it hard off the line and there appeared to be smoke from the zorst but that seemed normal for a turbo car going hard.

Not sure if it could be a fuel thing.

Any thoughts?

Does anybody know how to adjust the dumpvalve for better performance?

How would this affect my fuel consumption?

I have a 2000 V40 with ~74K miles. At ~70K it developed a starting problem. If it is cold out it starts right up first thing in the morning. After driving around a bit, if I turn it off for more than 20 minutes I have to crank it for about 4 seconds for it to catch and run. Starting is hard first thing in the morning if it is warm out.

I've had the compression checked and had two different mechanics look at it. They can't find anything wrong. Plugs look fine, turbo looks fine. One guy cleaned the throttle body and that seemed to clear up the problem for a few days at most.

Any suggestions?

I had got my antenna hung up on some loose kite string from a power line the other night. I know wierd huh, but trust me it happened. Well the antenna remained on there but now its bent in a 90 degree angle. I did staighten it back up but now it won't go down. I've looked around part shops for a replacement or something but can't find nothing. Is there any after market ones out there or do I have to use what Volvo gives it drivers.

i[SIZE=7] have a 2000 v40 td and the alarm fob range got les and less .then failed .The alarm went off when trying to start . Car turns over immobilsed ,and the car does not respond to the fob inc new battery . help please

I am new to Volvo's, purchased a V40 XS in September this year and it drives like a dream. I have quite a few new cars in the past but this is my first Volvo.
I have one problem though, hope somebody can help?
The Fan for the Heater/Demister stopped working a couple of days ago (wrong time of year for that to happen) and since then it has started and stopped randomly a couple of times?
I do not want to spend a fortune for a dealer to correct this if is only a loose wire?
if anyone can help I would be gratefull

With some great posts here, I was able to remove the fascia. However, I can't turn or pull out the climate control to get to the rear to remove the bulbs. Do I have to remove the radio as well (If so, I don't know the code if I have to enter it again). Any help would be appreciated.

I currently have 205/50 r17 tires on my 2005 s40 (sport package). Can I switch to 205/55 r16s for winter tires. volvo villa indicated no - becuase I would screw up the electrical systems, the kms per hour readings and the paint job - is this correct
