Sorry about my english!

I have a problem with the rear left light. The lamp was broke inside, and i can't setting the vertical beam.
So i bought a new lamp, but i don't know how can i change.
I screw off the 4 clam, but the front bumper wedge in the lamp.
I need dismount the bumper? Or put down the bumper and get off the lamp?

Anybody can help me?

My car is S40 from 1998.

I took my 01 S40 in for the new owner smog check,the mechanics put my car to the spining ramps.They were taking a long time and they were triying to look for a anti slip botton,so they gave up and they told me if I knew were it was.So I told them that it was DSA botton or the W botton,so they said ok their it is.I was like??Im paying you.so they got a book to study something in the volvo,and took their sweet time.At the end the volvo passed the smog check.The mech's gave me the keys and told me ,"all ready!,oh the ABS botton came on,dont worryit will take off after a drive".I was thingking did these mech's mess up my ride.As soon as I drove it out of the shop the ABS light came off.Is this normal????well the car is riding clean.but did these mechs know what they were doing?does anyone know why the ABS light comes on?thanx...........

Hi Im thinking of putting some 17" inch rims on my 01 S40.Do you think its a good idea to put rims this big?, will it affect my driving?or should I stay with my stock rims . thanx

I purchased a Neo Ion iPOD adapter from www.mp3yourcar.com. It is specifically for the HU-615. Best Buy installed it for me for about $30. The installer screwed up the security code so we could not test it there. Solved that one at home. However, for some reason it (cd changer/iPOD) is not being recognized as an option. Neither is the regular single cd player. Any ideas?

Just a quick question regarding my 1998 S40 2.0i, which seems to have had a knock in a supermarket carpark just on the offside rear (drivers side uk) bumper marker light. The edge of the plastic is cracked off, about 1cm in width so water can get in.

I'm just wondering how you remove this light for replacement? It appears that in the handbook you need to speak with your dealer about replacing this light but I'm wondering if I can remove it myself and buy a cheap replacement for it.

Any help would be appreciated.

well I was driving my 01 S40 and the temp went up aq little more then half,and I heard the cooling fan turn on.Less than a minute latter the temp went down to the middle.So I checked the antifreeze level,and its in between the minimum line and the max line.Is this normal??or do I have to put some more?and if so were?I think I heard in two diffent places,in the reserve and in the radiotor.Also can I put anything else than volvo type C antifreeze??thanx..........

My 2001 S40 1.9t has a lot of vibration when idling.
I have checked the mounts, timing and just went through the 168,000 km service with flying clours well except the vibration. Compression and firing \ timing is all perfect.

It seems that the whole stearing clumn vibrates when idling. fades away when moving.

AQny ideas what could be the problem. The mechanic says he cant find anyting wrong, and wants me to ignore it!

Hi, im looking for a wiring diagram book for my 01 S40, Ive been triying haynes and chilton but they carry like 1995 and down. Does anyone know a good book that shows you pictures on how to dismantle piece by piece , in cluding wiring diagrams.Any ideas ?thanx........................

I have looked everywhere for these, finaly I found a supplier and thought it rude not to share the products with you guys.

Just bought a 2001 S40 with a HU605 cd player and tape unit. But it will not select cd mode. When turning the knob it selects fm radio-> am radio-> tape... but not cd player. Any ideas what is wrong? Thanks.

My indicator lights seem to be stuck! I recently changed all the rear bulbs pre MOT and although it passed ( thats all I did to it )...a little later the indicator lights just stopped flashing.

I took my car to the volvo dealer today, a mechanic looked at it and said the hissing/clicking noise was probably down to a faulty/worn out bearing on or near the belt on one of the attactched parts. The noise also seemed to stop for a while after he leaned on the engine to look at it?!

He seemed to suggest it was not a serious problem and was unlikely to break the belt and would just be noisy, but then he backtracked (maybe because he wanted me to pay him to fix it) and said it may break, but he still didn't suggest it was an immediate worry.


I am getting my car serviced on Thursday meantime I will likely drive 70 miles between now and then and I want to know if the problem is a serious, if it is safe to drive like that and if it can last until Thursday.. and of course how difficult it would be to replace the faulty bearing?

He seemed to say it wouldn't be much but then said if it was on the alternator that may cost £300 to fix?

I am pretty clueless about cars and engines and I would hate to cause serious damage to my car and/or suffer a breakdown so please tell me the truth out of what the mechanic said as he was a bit unclear! thanks.

Hi I owen a 01 Volvo S40. I was driving one chilli night and my trip comp / ambient tempperature was reading 81 degrees F,?? does anyone know why?.Then the ambient temp reading goes back to normal.By the way its supposed to read the temp outside right? thanx

Trying to find where the spark plugs are on the volvo... found the injectors but no luck finding the plugs?

hi I owen a 01 volvo s40 1.9t , I was driving yesterday and I got next to my friends suv , so I wanted to pass him but he would not let me.So I punch it!! , the turbo kick in nicelly, and passed him with ease! I min latter the " CHECK ENGINE " light came on. This is my first volvo , my bro owens one as well ,but he always takes it to the dealer,so his not mech wise. THe other day the Chk Eng light came on again,but after 40-50 miles it took off.but know im confused.Can anyone help on this topic,thankx........

when i move the flasher position to turn right, i hear and see lot of clicks. and flashes..
my left flasher works fine with normal amount of clicks and flashes..
does this have to do with the position of the turn signal stick.. or is it a defective light bulb.. in this case how to replace the bulb..

I just purchased a 2001 Volvo S40. I have a couple of questions.
First it seems to get poor gas mileage around 20 mpg. I have been putting 93 Octane. Secondly the gas will click off well before the guage says it is full around 3/4 of a tank. And the last thing is I smell oil sometimes when I am driving. Other than these possible issues I love the car. Any help would be great.

Well I think my 01 S40 is falling apart,or thats the way that I feel.I parked to close to a concrete bar that was on the floor.I drove into it sofetlyand heard some scrapping,so I backed up fast and I heard a pop!I got of the car,and the bumper on my right side snaped out.The screw that holds the bumper next to the right signal light broke,and now its hanging a little! I think the person who sold it to me had the same proplem,because I looked under the bumper and found deep scratches.Now my problem is the pre-cut hole on the bumper that holds the bumper up broke.I dont know if I should drill a new hole.HELP! any ideas?? thanx!

My friend i work with has a 2000 volvo s40 1.9t.

He called me and told me he got into a small accident where he shattered his headlamp and headlamp wiper.. So I told him i whould fix it for him. I already sourced a headlight for him at a local euro junkyard. What i needed to know is what tools do I have to bring into work tommorow to change out the headlight..
Also do i need to remove the bumper to do so or can i do it with just the hood popped. A how too page whould be great if there is one.

My battle with my S40's electrical system continues a pace.

Onto the potentially faulty wiper motor.

It has 4 positions. Pull it towards you for 2 seconds and screen wash is jetted onto the windscreen. Position 1 is slow wipe, 2 medium and 3 constant wipe.

When I bought the car we were in the middle of a particularly dry spell (this being Scotland was unusual) and I tested the wipers with screen wash, but noted the blades stuck once or twice in position 1. Putting it down to the blades I thought nothing more of it until I had already purchased the car (along with inheriting several other electrical faults undisclosed by previous owner).

The blades were replaced and the situation persisted. I thought the motor was at fault (but wondered why it worked in positions 2 & 3 without any problems). So, I purchased a motor from a breakers yard - the car had only managed to get 30k on the clock before the owner totalled it in a crash. Luckily, the motor was reasonably priced, but the local garage were going to charge a small fortune for fitting it (much sucking of air between teeth 'Oh, it's not an easy job, a complete strip down I'm afraid, it'll cost you' etc, etc, etc - enter any number of mechanics phrases here)

The other day I was fiddling with another bit of electrics with my son in the car, he was messing about in the drivers seat and I was keeping a keen eye on him so that we didn't shoot down the street by accident.

I noticed that he couldn't get position 1 to work at all because he held onto the lever whilst pulling it down towards position 2.

This got me curious and by trying it later I discovered that the lever is incredibly sensative to any movement. Flick it gently and position 1 kicks in without any problems, touch it (even gently) and it stops the blades.

My query is this.

Does this sound more like a faulty switching mechanism rather than motor, which seems to be strong enough to wipe in positions 2 & 3?

Is the motor meant to PARK the blades automatically? (as mine doesn't - it continues to sweep and I have to judge the moment to flick the switch back up).

Does a motor control the parking of the blades, or is it processed by something else? (at the switch end for instance?)

Can I spray switch cleaner directly into the mechanism without taking the entire module apart or am I going to be forced to take the steering wheel assembly apart?

Anyone out there done this or had the same problem that has any advice on this?

My wife and I are considering an S40 for her, probably a 2002 CPO model. We know it's more expensive to buy at the dealer, but we like the idea of having it under warranty for at least three years before we are on our own.

We are seeing some pretty good looking ones, mostly 2002s, with mileage anywhere from 24,000 to about 49,000, and dealer asking prices of $15,995 to about $17,995.

Does anyone know how much profit a dealer usually has built into their CPO asking prices? I am thinking perhaps about $1,500, so I am thinking we will offer about $1,000 under asking and work from there.

Any thoughts?

Hi! I have a 2000 S40 that I've dumped $3900 into in the past 12 months. Need some advice b/c Volvo doesn't have any. The car drops into fourth gear on the freeway and revs at about 4000 RPMs, won't accelerate, and if you slow down, you can't get your speed back. It also will stay stuck in first from a stop, so you can only go 20 mph revving at 4000. Getting on the freeway is always an adventure! I've replaced the main computer, various sensors, turbo relay switch...all to no avail. The problem is intermittent. Drives beautifully for a couple of weeks, then starts misbehaving again. Volvo insists they've never heard of this before in any models. Have you?

i just got a s40 its an automatic, i notice that there is no luminating light where P,R,N,D,D2. "the place where you stiff the car's into gears". THERE IS NO LIGHT THERE, I NOTICE IT WHEN I TOOK THE CAR OUT ON THE FIRST NIGHT . IS IT THE FUSE THAT GONE BAD OR IS IT MORE SERIOUS?

any one know how easy it is to change the cam on a s40 and what locking tool do i need to get

I am trying to figure out the outputs of the connections for the CD Changer in the Back of the HU-615 CD Changer Compatable factory stereo. I have purchased an icruze ipod adapter and the cables do not connect properly to this machine. I can get it to work with the diagrams. Does anybody have the wiring diagram or the pin out diagram from the connectors? Thanks

The driver's side window will not come up on our 2002 s40. My wife took the car to a dealer and they said it was the regulator and would cost $910 to fix ($660 for the regulator and 2.5hrs @ $100 an hr)!! This seemed very high to me.

I have found the same part on-line for $230 and would like to know if anyone here could walk me through how to do it myself. I am a novice handyman at best

I run an S40 1.8ltr petrol engine with the designated Ron 95 unleaded fuel which Volvo recommend.

I have been led to believe that the engine was originally produced to run on RON 97 or RON 99 fuels, hence early models being recalled for various engine related issues.

The car is about to have it's 100k miles service (which after a fashion it should sail through), but I was wondering whether A: it would be benefitial to decarb the engine and B: whether in actual fact the car should be run on a higher value fuel (RON 97) to retain maximum performance?

My concern is that Volvo recommend only the one value and perhaps the engine has been adapted by Volvo in some way so that running it on anything other than the prescribed value could cause damage to it.

Anyone got any thoughts on this - also, is the engine a Mitsubishi engine in ALL editions of the S40, or did different spec have different engine manufacturers?

My drive belt (for alternator, power steering and air conditioning) snapped today and my power steering died on me and the battery stopped recharging.

I was told by the garage that the chances of it breaking were very small and had booked the car in to have a new belt and tension beering (which is what caused the snap) replaced for next Friday!

but just my luck it broke today! So I am considering asking Volvo to replace it instead of my local garage as I hope it will be done quicker by them but I am wondering how much that will or should cost for the parts and the labour and how long it should take.

And also I am of course concerned that it may have caused other damage as well to the engine - not that it looks like it has - but is the drive belt the same as the cam belt because I read that when that snaps it can mean a new engine is needed? If someone could fill me in please do! Are they two belts one inside the engine and one outside? because it is the one outside that snapped...

i have a 1999 s40 t4 and was looking to make the air intake on the air box a little bigger for incresed air flow. have any of you guys done this and have it be successful if so plse send me some pics. Or would it be easier to install a pod filter i have one on hand but am wondering if it would be a waste of time because it would be sucking in a whole lot of hot dirty air..

I turned my engine on today and I heard a hissing/clicking noise that sounded like it was coming from near the cambelt.

In the past when I have heard odd noises it has normally been because the oil was low - so I went straight to a garage and checked the oil (which was low) and then put fresh oil in and then drove 40 miles to where I was going.

However when I next turned the car on it was still making the noise! There are no warning lights and there is oil in the car now. The noise is only audiable when I turn the engine on and it is ideling - I can't hear anything when accelarating or driving normally.

It sounds like it is coming from the cambelt but that was replaced at most 60,000 miles ago and if I am honest the noise is like the other noises I have heard which were fixed by some oil in the engine. So I don't have a clue. I am not exactly an expert with cars or engines I can change the oil but to be honest I would not know where the noise is coming from other than from the engine.

The handeling and performance of the car has not been effected and I am having no problems with starting the car etc, it is just making a funny noise...? Is it safe to drive? what could it be?

I just bought a 2000 S40 last week.

Just this weekend I've noticed a rattling noise coming from the back (sounds like the trunk) when i'm driving in the city. There's nothing actually in the trunk.

I'm getting a little worried because I haven't even had the car for a week.

Will call the dealer on Monday, but just wanting to get some opinions.

It wasn't doing this when I first drove it home.

Ok, I have a 2000 s40, love it. Cup holder broke , had it replaced at dealer. The power door lock switch is next to it above the radio. OK... is it supposed to light up like all of the other switches?? I could of swore it did. One person from Volvo said yes, the other no?? Need to know as warranty up in a few hundred miles. Thanks!
