My 2001 will start consistently, but only after I pump the gas pedal when trying to start the car.

I have read on the forum about the "switch" located in the trunk and also about the fuel pressure regulator. Which option would be the best one to look into for my problem.

I am currently leaning more towards the fuel regulator at this point.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

the big end bearings have almost gone on the volvo. it's clattering rather badly. barley used it apart from a two min trip from a local garage for a quote. they said since the bearings were so bad the crank should be damamged so it's a new engine job. going to try and replace the bearings with new ones sunday but if there's any obvious signs to look for so i know not to bother then i'd appreciate it. don't want to drop in a new engine if i don't need to. it'd had plenty of oil for ages and had sat for 3 months not doing anything with fresh oil in it. i'm hopefull it's ok.

I am a newbie to this great forum... I recently bought a 2003 Volvo S40 T4. I just love the car but there is almost always BUT. I would appreciate if someone could shed some light / suggestions on the following issues:

1. Turbo whines a bit at low speeds around 40-50 km/h. It is not very loud and I did not even notice it when I test drove the car (on a busy street) but it annoys me a bit now. It is a fairly new car but has already 88k kms on the clock and there is no service history available (import). The whine sounds like turning a vacuum cleaner on and off - the pitch changes as the load on the engine changes. It pulls really well and there is no smoke or any other issues but I discovered few dark brown specs in the oil (on the dipstick) which makes me worried that the turbo bearings might have burned the oil (probably not fully synthetic one). Is flushing the engine and turbo the way to go? Will it make the whining disappear?

2. Power steering feels a bit springy (not wobbly). I can turn the wheel very easily for about 6cm each side but then there is resistance, which goes away after half a second or so. The wheel sometimes has tendency to turn itself as I drive over bumps or break hard. Speed makes no difference. The fluid is brown a looks dirty but the level is at max.

I need some help again , i have a 98 s40 T4 . it started to judder recently again , only under full throttle . i was reading on other forums that it be the wastegate / dump valve ,

now - could somebody explain to me the diffs between . 1.) Dumpvalve . 2.) wastegate.

and what does my volvo have ?

Could a falty wastegate/dumpvalve be my problem ?

Does anyone have a good ballpark figure for the cost to flush and fill the transmission fluid on a s40....some american outlets apparently charge in the neighbor of $60......but a swedish specialist repair spot quoted $375 for a full synthetic change. Any ideas on this one??

Hi All,
I've read the posts concerning replacement of this cup holder unit. One person said that it was easy to replace "just snaps in and out". Well, I've had my replacement part for over 8 months. It sits in the floorboard of my car because I can't figure out how to get the old one out.
I get how the new one goes in because I can see the little retaining things, two on top and two on bottom. However, what do you use to disengage these to get the old one out?

-Do I stick something in the front and push on them?
-Do I take the radio out and try from the back to push on them?
-Do I have to push on all 4 at the same time?

I would really like to take care of this myself since I got laid off from my job last month. It just can't be that hard!

I have one blown out bulb above the rear license plate. I am some what technically inclined, but cannot figure out how to replace this bulb. My guess is to enter through the back of the trunk lid, but not sure how to remove the "insulation/felt" covering.

Since I first bought my 2004 1.9T I have had an occasional surging problem. It started to get worse lately so after searching in the forums I found some people suggested changing the coil/wires/plugs. I ordered all the parts and put them on but the problem still existed and as of about 2 weeks ago got even worse. I had no check engine light and my scan tool showed to codes in memory. I read in a recent post that someone said they fixed it by changing the Turbo Pressure Valve. I found one online from a Volvo parts dealer and it was only $40 USD so I decided to give it a try.

I installed it today and my car has never run better since the day I owned it. I no longer have the surge/studder problem and the turbo seems to be a lot stronger than before. It used to have a bit of lag off the line and then start to pick up. After installing the new pressure valve it kicks in instantly. The valve hangs right off the air cleaner on the firewall side and had 3 vacuum hoses and an electrical connector on it. It took me 2 minutes to change and made a huge impact on performance.

Anyone else having this problem, I hope this helps you out.

Can anyone help me with my questions? Around how much do you think it would cost at a local garage or auto shop to get vaccuum lines hooked up to a BOV and how much would it cost to get an exhaust system like the one on Eurosport tuning for a Volvo S40 1.9t, installed? Responses would be greatly appreciated.

does any one have an idea on around how much it would cost to have a BOV installed by an auto place?

I have got oil leaking from the rear of my S40 2.0S non turbo engine and it looks like something is missing from a hole (approx. 20-25mm dia) positioned just below the exhaust manifold. has anyone got any ideas what could be missing?

I am working on replacing the Fuel Door lock motor for a 2000 S40 and running into trouble. I have located in the trunk where to replace the motor, but it looks like I need to pull out the atenna. How do I go about this? I see where there is one bolt to remove but concerned there is more and what to do with the atenna piece outside of the car. Please Help.

The gear indicator is not illuminated, and I suspect that the light bulb burned out.
Could any one please tell me if this is something I can do myself? Thanks.

Hi all,im new to forum and new to automatic gearboxes.i have a 98 s40 2.0 auto which ive owned for 6 months with no problem till now.The problem being it simply wont move in any gear.A friend said to check the box fluid which ive done and dipstick is bone dry,also there is fluid on underneath of car so i take it ive obviously got a leak.I was wondering if it is a common problem and how hard a job it is to remedy as im quite capable but completely new to autos and volvos also.Any help would be greatly appreciated,Thanks in advance..

I just put 17 inch wheels on my 2004 S40 1.9T. I am not sure how many pounds of air I should have in them. I inflated them to 34 pounds but it seems to be riding really hard. I am afraid of under-inflating them and bending one of them because the roads are in bad condition because of the winter. If anyone has tested their air pressure and has a recommendation I would appreciate any input you have. Thanks

hi, im Ben, i just bought a 2001 Volvo S40 1.9T, but i have a problem, my car doesnt haul-****!! its very slow and would like to know if anyone knows how i can give my car a little umpf! i have a check engine lite on and i scanned my computer and it gave me a code stating to check cranshaft sensor, but i dont think that can be the problem, i just think volvos are slower than most cars since they are made for comfort, so can anyone help?

Im used to driving fast, (owned a 1999 Honda civic SI turbo 320HP/331 lbs. Torque) and i know i cant get that kind of performance out of the stock motor with out replacing my stock motor with a V8. ive been reading about PPC and IMP ECU's but none are compatible with 2001 S40 AHHH!!! so please if anyone has a **** S40 1.9T please let me know what i can do. thanks!!

I drive a 2000 s40 1.9t. I have some subs I want to put in and dont want to play with stock radio because of the security feature, and I want an iPod connection. So I was wondering what I would need to do inorder to replace that with a new deck, because it looks like I need to feed 6 speakers too. Any help or links would be greatly appreciated

My question to all you guys with eagle eyes is this.



- Can a simple Dent/Paint/Rebuff job bring back the glory or Should i change the pannel or the whole door has to be changed and how much it will cost me ... i know it can vary so a ball park number of the cost will help me haggle with the car man !!!



This is my first Volvo.. so i am unsure of the rigidity of the door pannel .. but my initial guess is that a Dent/Paint/Rebuff job will do the trick.

Could someone please post a picture showing where the thermostat and temperature sensor are located (preferably on a 2002 S40), otherwise, I will post a pic and you guys point it out.
From what I see online, the thermostat is NOT the same as the cap that closes the coolant reservoir. I am referring to the black cap that is located as close as you can get to the passenger within the engine compartment (have a look, pic of 2001 S40 engine compartment, the cap is above the left side of the strut tower bar).
If you have any resources with clear illustration of various sensors and such please forward them to me.

Does anyone have a general idea on around how much it would cost to get full tints on a 2001 Volvo S40 1.9 t?

I bought a 2001 a used Volvo S40 and for the first 2 months the car started right up. However, it has began having trouble. Now almost every time I turn the key it takes at least 5-8 seconds for the cars to slowly start. Sometimes I have to try twice. The battery is new. The alternator is new. The temperature can be 10 degrees or 50 degrees, it does not make a difference. The car always starts, but the problems is getting much worse and the time is takes the car to start up is increasing. I don't know much about cars, but it reminds me of my riding lawn mower because on my mower there is a manual choke that you push in after you turn the key. My car sounds like I should be pushing in the choke button in order to get the engine really running. The thing that gets me though is, randomly probably 1 out of every 10 times, it will be fine; and it will be fine it I start the car right back up again. However, if the car sits for an hour or more, the car won't want to start. Any insight would be helpful. -Thanks

I have a broken headlight and Corner Lamp assembly. What do I need to do to replace both of these? I have new parts coming, but I am sure that there won't be any instructions.

I know this question has been asked a few times but that was a/a couple of years ago. Does anyone have the S40 field service manual that they are willing to share?

In particular, I am trying to solve a P0128 trouble code and would prefer to have a manual to refer to. In all honesty, I cannot tell where the ECT temp sensor is since there are two hoses going from the top of the radiator to the engine block (one on the left hand side and the other on the right. One is way thicker than the other).

For troubleshooting this code I will do the following:
1. Flush the coolant and add new mixture
2. Would like to make sure the ECT temp sensor is well connected
3. Would like to make sure the thermostat is well placed

If I still get the P0128 code I think it will be time to replace the thermostat. So, it would be best to have the field service manual. Otherwise, would someone please post pictures of the S40 and point out where the ECT sensor is (I can post the pictures myself and then you can point me in the right direction. whatever works best for you)?

Hi all,
I am looking for a part for my 1999 S40.
I need to replace the front bumper and Bumper support bar, both of which I have.
There is also another part I need but don’t know what it is called.
There is a plastic part that sits between the bumper and bumper bar, and seems to hold them together. There is a long strip of foam inside of it.
Can anyone let me know what this part is called, and if possible, the part number?

Has anyone had the following issue, I have no side lights working (parking lights)
All the rest of my lights work fine headlights indicators daytime running lights.

When I turn the switch to position 1 I do not get any lighting checked fuses, switch replaced bulbs all checked.

Can someone please shed some light on this

Sorry for the title I dont know what they are called! I have 4 amber oblong lights and only 3 work the drivers side light doesnt work. I'm just asking would I have to remove the whole bumper to access this light? Or does it just pop out? My car is a Volvo S40 1.6i V reg 2000.

Hey guys!

My 96 s40 is having a problem with its hood. The handle for poping the hood doest do anything anymore.
It seems the wire is broken or jumped out of its place. (this might have happened when I drove of a 30cm edge by accident and the bottom of the car hit the edge.)

So i need to open it to see if I can repair it and to refill the "cleaning fluid" (whats the correct english term here?)

From what i have read there is more than the latch behind the grill that must be opened. Has anyone some tips for me?

Hi,

The transmission of my volvo at 60 mph slipped and engine light came on but the car runs fine. After that I still get this "slipping"(kind of single limp) every time I reach 50 or 60 mph

Local Volvo dealership told me I need new transmission and there are two codes related to tourgue converter and transmission. ( $4 K for it)

How long can do you think it can last like that? Is it possible to be a sensor and not the internal transmission parts ?

long story short
hardwired in a radio

but the door speakers in front wont work only the tweeters

if i hook up a tweeter to the door conection it works there

but the door speakers wont play any music no matter where they are connected


any ideas?
