Hello!

I have a 1991 Volvo 440 DL 1.7L 66kW (90Hp) B18KP (engine) with a Lovato LPG system. Usually drive with LPG.
The car had a german LPG system before, saidly now its all a mess of wireing..
I would be greatful for your help.

1. Have a bit of a problem with a vacuum pipe, one is loose of it and i don't know where it belongs. Here is 2 pics, of it.

Someone please tell me where it belongs.

2. I have an rough idle. What I mean and it doesnet occure all the time. Coming to a stop at light or stg, it drops rev to almost stall then revs up and des that till I pull out the retarder to make the revs up to a 1000 this wasn't nessesary until about a mounth ago. It had an idel of about 850.

3. This one is low rev rolling, or so called take off. If i want to go slowly my revs does drop and rev up until i go a bit faster about 1000 revs, it almost stalls had this today 2 times...

4. My temperature gauge is nuts, it sometimes goes up to red (might be because of the traff jam.) But my fan not always starts, it used to start befor I got to red. Anyway it is not the thing the thing is thet it rises fast then drops fast (I mean the temp gauge) in a short period. my fan started yesterday when I was mingling with the engine (running) so I think that works.

Well hello there my volvo owners, While recently trying to fix an electical problem in Victor the 440 GLT volvo i found the immobiliser unit behind the glove box lining tray. Now i did not get a fob with Victor and did not realise that an alarm/immobiliser was fitted. My immobiliser had a large plug unplugged with two small three pin and two pin plugs also undone. So out of curiosity i plugged the undone plugs in and what do you know, Victor was immobilsed. Unplugged them all again and Victor started up. have included a photo to show which plug it is that needs to be undone (couldnt get a clear photo of the smaller plugs but its the black box with an airel lead coming out) Undo all plugs except for the one in the photo that remains in) Hope this helps anyone who cannot imobilise there volvo 440 but can still get in with the keys, PEACE

I own a volvo 460 1993 mod. and is starting to get some problems I cannot find out of. I have checked the alternator and it does charge and work the way it should. But the batery is not getting any charging. And now the car is dying out even when it is running. The fuel lamp is on, the batery lamp is on and the brake light (!) is on after this started to happen. Any idea what might be wrong or where I shall start searching?

I've been having a host of problems, but trying to use the diagnostics port isn't helping like it should. This is what I do.
Turn key to off
Put the wire into socket #2
Turn key to on
Press the button (tried all sorts of press durations)
The LED lights up while the button is depressed, but then nothing at all happends, doesn't flash codes, doesn't flash 1-1-1. Absolutly nothing.
Checked the connection to the correct pin on the ECU - fine
Tried a spare ECU - no change.

I'm getting this sudden power-no power jumpyness to the drive, it doesn't stall, but it seems to have two modes.
1) Working normally
2) Under no load, short delay between pressing the pedal and revs rising freely. Under load, press pedal and nothing happens.
The car will just jump back a forth between these two modes with very jerky power as it comes and goes. If you turn off the enginer and start again, it often stays in mode 1 for 30seconds to 2 minutes, but then it'll jump backwards and forwards with a frequency between 0.5 seconds and 10 seconds.

If anyone has any bright ideas why the diagnostic port isn't working, or the engine fault I'd love to hear.

Hi guys,

I'm just wondering if it's easy to replace a whole wheel bearing assembly on a non abs volvo 440? it's a front passenger side wheel bearing assembly, so i'm not pressing the bearings or anything.

Should i do this myself or should i be taking this to a mechanic? I recently changed the brake pads by myself (i've never really worked on cars!) and was just wondering if this is a much bigger job? or if it's difficult?

I have lost my key fob and the immobiliser is on. Volvo tells me they will hook it up to the computer to see what they can do for 240 dollars but they promise nothing. What other options do I have?
My car is a 1996 460.
When I got the car it cost me 4000 dollars and it only had one key fob. Volvo would sell me a second fob for another 400 dollars (10% of the price of the car for a key!) Instead my wife and I have kept the key fob in the ash tray and used our keys to get in and out of the car. If you lock the doors manually (without using the key) the immobiliser does not turn on). When by chance the immobiliser got turned on we could take the fob out of the ashtray and turn the immobiliser off. All great for 3 years.
However the other night I missed locking the passenger door and somebody got into the car looked through the glove box and then the ashtray, they found the fob turned on the immobiliser and stole the fob. Now of course I can not start the car.

1.when i pull out the drain plug from the underside of the radiator on the b18u volvo 440 1993 model, no water comes out although there is water in the radiator.could there be a blockage or airlock?

2.my temperature gauge on the same car shoots to red and beyond once i turn the key to on,before i even start the car. i tried to disconnect the temperature sensors one by one, including the computer box. still the gauge shoots to red. is the gauge repairable or replacable on its own?

i have a k reg 440 that i've had at the back of my garage for years and it hasn't been started for 6 years. i tried yesterday to fire it up to no avail. i put new plugs in, no difference. i checked the fuel pump which was dry. when i last started it there was 3/4 tank of fuel, but the guage reads empty and it hasn't leaked out. somebody suggested it could have turned to jelly. is this possible and if so howo do i go about cleaning out the tank and fuel supply feeds?

hi,need a little advice with my 95 volvo 440 1.6[.multi point inj] just when im about to stop at lights/ zebra crossing etc,and as i push down the clutch pedal,the revs shoot up to 3000, then settle straight back to 1000 rpm[.but not every time i stop] thought it might be the idle control valve sticking,tried spraying carb cleaner in to it, & also throttle intake, but its done no good.was thinking of getting diagnostic codes checked. & replacing coolant temp sensor,its only done 30,000 miles.anyone help? thanks, steve.hebburn, south tyneside.

Hi everyone, having a very strange problem with my 1995 Volvo 440. When I rev it to roughly 2000rpm the engine whines, sounds like it's in reverse. It only happens in 1st and 2nd gear, and if I rev it harder the noise seems to fade, although it could be drowned out by the normal engine noise. It also becomes more acute if I have the steering wheel on full lock. At first I thought it might be the gearbox but a friend of mine said I would feel that through the clutch, and I don't feel any feedback other than normal. He also suggested the power steering fluid and motor, however these are both fine. Thanks in advance for any help.

About one month ago I bought a '95 Volvo 440 GLE. With airco and it is working fine! I drove in it for about two weeks (and used the airco), then I went on vacation and when I came back the 440 started with a single turn of the keys, but it is smelling awfull! The smell of mold and damp air makes it hardly possible to drive in the car without open windows.

I think the condensed water of the airco unit makes the filter wet and the mold starts.

So I took a look but cannot pinpoint the location of an airco-filter or air-filter. I looked under the hood but couldn't find a filter. On the internet I found someone saying the filter is located inside, on the passenger side (the right). Hidden behind a piece of polstery I found something like an airco-inner-unit (whats the correct word?) The bottom feels cold and wet (and is condensend on the outside), but again no filter.

Is my conclusion about the filter correct? Where can I find a filter and above all: how do I get rid of the horrible smell?

Here I am again. now my Volvo 400 a month ago had starting problems ie: just would not turn over or start. I have replaced the battery, my local garage replaced the starter motor, great woked for a day then would not start, back to the garage. They placed another cable from the engine to the body. Great working ok for over a month. Came to car yesterday and it would not start, left it a few minutes, turned key started ok. Any Ideas or has anybody had same problem? (ihave replaced both battery terminals one with a new earth lead and the battery is a Bosch sliver one)</span>

Hi all, i have a 1.7 1992 Volvo 440si, everything was running ok until the car started juddering while driving along, in all gears (automatic) and at all speeds, then it would suddenly clear itself, on tickover it idles at about 1000rpm the suddenly just for a split second it drops to about 850rpm at the same time you get a little kick feeling while sitting inside, outside you can hear the engine dip, i replaced plug leads and cleaned spark plugs and put some injector cleaner in the tank, after this it ran a lot better, with no more juddering but its still dipping slightly on tickover and you can still feel it happen sometimes, if its just dipping when you pull away at a roundabout it feels as though its going to judder but clears itself, today i have replaced the plugs for new ones, the old contacts had rounded of slightly and looked quite old, i have not been out in it yet but i started it up and let it idle, it was ok for about 2 minutes but then the rpm needle dipped that little bit again, could it be the fuel filter, and where is the fuel filter on this model, I'm trying to establish if its worse when the engine is hot or not, or am i going about this the wrong way. Has anyone else had this problem, and corrected it? thanks for any help.

A "start prevented - try again later" wardning came up on my 2005 s80.

When you turn the ignition its totally dead.

If this happens to you:

get our of the car - with your remote key lock and unlock the car 5 times in quick succession. Your car will now start.

It works and has not happended since.

No idea why though!

My volvo 440 is making a noise that i can't identify.

I almost sounds like i've attached a loud exhaust to the car, but i haven't! It starts making the sound at about 40kmh and gets louder as i go faster and then ceases when i turn the car right! When i turn the car left it's just as loud. When i'm driving in a straight line the noise just get's louder and quieter depending on speed.

Any ideas?

i have no idea how much thou!! some cars i see go for this sort of age are going for 800/900 £!! but their all non se versions or turbo'd version so i have no idea what i should try and expect for mine. i can upload pictures of the thing if that helps?

but some info on it, its taxed and motd till october, it has alloys, serviced by me last year, new drive shaft kit fitted about a month ago, has been in my family since 2004 , has had all new breakes fitted in 2008 and new tyres and since only done 15000 miles, it is fitted with a tow bar, had a new back box fitted in january 2011

Hello, very new to this so please excuse if i gets things a little wrong, We have a 1994 Volvo 440 automatic, it appears fine in the summer but when it comes to cold weather we start to get problems. The car will start in the garage on cold mornings but will shudder baddly for the first few miles and sometimes it will stall after a mile if it gets passed this point it is normally ok as it seems to sort itself out, if it stalls it will then turn over but refuses to start for up to an hour.

Today it happened again it drove for about 1.5 miles we parked for about 15 mins then we set off again after about .25 of a mile it stalled and refused to start we called the RAC and it started for him straight away he then checked it out for an hour and it completely baffled him he said to look here to see if anyone else was having the same sort of problems. We have had it looked at by the garage as well but as it appears intermittent they too are a bit lost.

Can anyone help????

I recently ran out of fuel in my 440 and since then its runnung like the preverbal chaff cutter, I am about to replace the fuel filter but was wondering could it be dirty injectors as well. It will rev fine in neutral but soon as there is a load "helloo hopalong"

Any suggestions much appreciated.. cant really afford he $160 an hour for the volvo boys to look at it! Thanks in advance

Hello everybody,

I have bought a volvo 460 1.9TD from 1995 and had to deal with certain problems...
Now there is is still one thing I can't resolve.
My power steering is sometimes working but most of the time it won't work.
I can't find the reason why and there is no logic in whetter it works or not, there are no turning points at which it goes better.
For me it is actually random whetter it works or let me down.

I hope you will bring me some help !

My Fuel level on the IC is almost 0L. The level only goes up if I have 10L or so in the tank.
I removed the fuel gauge sensonr and cleaned it and of course I measured the resistance and it is between 38ohm and 280ohm. I read on the volvo 480 club forum that it should be between 30-280ohm but I think the 8ohm difference isn't the problem becouse as higher is the resistance the fuel in the tank is as lower so on low fuel it should be ok or no?
I tried move up and down the sensor while it was out and the level moved from 0L to 55,5L but when I putted the sensor and the fuel pump back my fuel level was 0L, I measured the resistance again and it was 280ohm so that indicates for me that the sensor doesn't move but I don't know why. When I took it I could move it easily up and down.
Ok I'm low on fuel now but there should be at least 2L in the tank which should force the sensor to move up a bit and the IC should show at least 1L or so.
The IC calibration is not helping becouse the sensor is at its lowest level.

What could be the problem?

I purchased a used 2000 s40 Volvo with 175 K miles last year. It started and drove with no problems. i drove it home with no problem.

i could not immediately register the car because it has a cracked windshield and i left it parked in my front driveway. when i first parked it in the front driveway i did not shut the radio off and the power radio antenna stayed up. shortly after that i noticed that the antenna was bent out of shape by one of the neighborhood kids.
so i decided to park it in the back yard until i found a new windshield for the car.

after i parked the car in my back yard I also removed the cd changer from the trunk to fix it as it was jammed.
i also removed thebroken antenna that the kids bent out of shape and broke it.

now the volvo will not start at all. When I insert the key into the ignition all it makes is a "click" sound.
Could it be that when i removed the cd changer and antenna that it locked up on the ignition? i replaced the car battery as i first thought it might have been due to the battery as it was not started for a year.
i did check if the car's headlights went on and they did with no problem. but i decided to go and buy a new battery on the advice of my neighbor.

please help as i am unable to move the car as no tow truck will fit into my backyard to tow it to a garage.

do these volvos have a kill ignition device or block of some sort when items such as disc changer or power antenna are removed?

please help if you can advise me on this?

My 740 has 109000 miles on it and is well loved. Whenever we take it anywhere lately, it refuses to catch and start. The engine will turn over when the key is turned, but won't catch. If I spray a small amount of starter fluid into the air filter system, it will generally start after one or two tries. We have done a mini-tune up on the car. The air filter is clean (new). The spark plugs are new.

Does anyone have any idea what it might be? I can't drive the car because my handicap keeps me from being able to lift the hood to spray the starter fluid. (not to mention this is a pain during the rainy season here in Oregon). Thank you for any help you can provide.

Pretty new to volvo's, just replaced the alternator in my 1993 440 which was pretty easy but now i've got a bigger problem!

I need to install a brake master cylinder, rear disk rotors, a booster valve and vacuum hose to match......can the novice mechanic do this?!?!

Has anyone got any tips, guides etc to help me do this? Should i bother doing this or get a new car?!

Any help would be MOST appreciated.

New member so don't know much about Volvos, there was a coolant leak and the car over heated quite badly
had to fill the coolant back up as it was empty.

Now there is some oil in the coolant, however engine still starts okay and its running okay

still a bit smelly

is the head gasket gone do you think? I have heard there might be another reason and Volvos can run okay
with oil in coolant

please help as local mechanic has said its dead and not worth fixing ist done 93,000

Recently my 460se don't go in a straight line. I have to constantly compensate for the car's own will to turn. In curves it behaves a little different. It turns normal to the right, but when I turn to the left, the car seems to take a sharper turn than I intended. When I turn the steering wheel all the way from one side to the other, there is a clicking sound about 2/3 of the way.

These problems have occurred for the last 3 weeks.

Any suggestions for what might be the problem, and if it can be fixed without any special tools?

Dear fellow Volvo enthusiasts,

I am continuing my project Volvo 440. I love my car and want to improve her looks with 17 inch wheels. I don't want my ugly brakes to show behind the rim, so i want to mount disc brakes on the rear.

I can buy the rear axle locally, but i am wondering what i have to change for example in the pressure or something like that. I will change the hoses and the handbrake cables. But does anyone have experience or knowledge on this modification?

Just acquired a P reg 440. Immobiliser light on dash constantly flashing. Previous post (2006!) suggests this is
a] normal, showing ultrasonic sensors are working, and
b] not normal, system needs resetting, however, no-one responded to thread as to how...

Im a noobie with a freshly aquired volvo 440 that i cant start! I hope someone can help me out.

I bought the car not running for my niece. I charged the battery and tried starting her, but she didnt want to start.I checked the plugs and it had spark.

I noticed the fuel light was on and the guage was reading empty, so i added about 12 litres to the tank. after adding the fuel, the guage was still reading empty and the fuel light was still on.

ok so what now? I guess it could be a dud fuel pump or blocked filter.
it just seems strange that the fuel light and guage is still on empty.

its starting for 3 seconds then just dies.

could this be a wiring issue from the pump? or a dud pump. could that leave you with an empty guage?
also can someone tell me is the fuel guage sender & fuel pump easy to get to? eg a removable plate on the floor pan somewhere....?
any help greatly appreciated.

hi can anyone help me, my 440 2.0 started and then died ,i can crank it over ,but it wont fire although after numerous attempts it would start ,but only idle for a few seconds and now it wont fire up at all,could it be the fuel pump,or the crank sensor or maybe the coil ,although it does have spark at the plugs

hi a strange one which i aint got a clue with, i have not long bought my 440SI 1.8 petty & she is missing somewhere, i changed all the plugs, leads & distributer cap, ran through with the good stuff & run cleaner through, i've also checked the air filter & carb which both look as they should, now i can't find how to ajust the dizzy on these as most have a screw then twist but this one ain't.
the prob is she pants like she's missing & once she gets hot she starts pulling back / jerking like the engin is grabbing, i checked all the oil & water ect in case it was a blown head but all fine there, i just cant work out why you get the jerking esp when hot, normally missing on 1 cyl settles esp on a long run on the motorway but this just gets worse

last sat we went from manchester to grantham 2 & half hrs leaving @ 8am, coming back left there @ 22:30 didn't get home till gone 6am after stopping to cool down several times!! any suggestions welcome before i have to get shut as we got it as a runner as the mrs is due in 2 weeks & need transport for the hospital whilst our main baby is stripped having a full over haul and serv modd's added

Problem: 740 sat for seven years {135,000 miles}... threw money,time and parts at it and have it running fine. I have driven it for about 1600 miles, cruises fine at 75mph, gets 24mpg and doesn't smoke or any other sign of distress.

The car keeps throwing codes; 221,231,232 immediately after start-up, after clearing of codes. After some time it then adds 113 to codes.

Have changed most of fuel relays, filters, injectors and cleaned tank. Have replaced oxygen sensor twice with OEM BOSCH. Also changed ECU with used one from EBAY.

Because of codes this won't pass smog and I can't give this to my daughter.

Any available wisdom would be appreciated

My 1993 Volvo Li has always started first time and runs well. Yesterday I accidentally bumped over a kerb when reversing out of my driveway and stalled the engine, following which it will not restart. I have checked various wires, the spark plugs, HT leads, electronic ignition unit, air filter and starter motor. The battery is in good condition and I have turned the engine over many times but without any signs of it firing. I have noticed a 'whirring' noise coming from under the rear seat and I'm wondering if it is a failed fuel pump? I also checked with Volvo SMW in Belfast this morning to see if the 440 has an emergency fuel cut off but apparently it doesn't. Has anyone had a similar problem or is there anything else I should consider checking?

I've searched the internet and all the time when Volvo 440 or 460 and immobilizers are mentioned, key fobs are mentioned also. But from what I've read I understand that the key fob is a remote device. I don't have remote device. I have a key!?. One small key without notches and another, regular one for ignition. I have to put this, first key into the slot and then I can turn on the engine with the other one. It's a completely different thing from what I've read about at different Volvo forums. So, what kind of immobilizer do I have?. It says on it: KBA 9529. Is this a standard, Volvo immobilizer?. Can I, also, have a key fob?.
