Hello everyone.

I am trying to install an infocentre cluster in my 460 B18U which has the normal instrument cluster. I have bought one unit but I see that connectors are different.

I was looking up in Haynes manual for the wiring diagram but it appears to be wrong (and I belive so becouse I think I burned my new unit

).

In Haynes databook (12.51) it says Pin #3 of the grey connector and pin #12 of the green connector are the +12V lines. I can see that pin #10 of grey connector is connected to earth.

Can anyone tell me if this is correct or I certainly burned my unit?

I will be very pleased.

My 440 1.8Si is now running again with a new alternator and battery.

When it broke down a week ago it had half a tank of petrol. Now the fuel light is on, and the needle on the gauge does not move at all. The temperature gauge seems to be working though.

What should I be checking, as I know there is half a tank of petrol in there!

Hi, everyone, I'm new here and this is my first post ...

Water jets on my 460 doesn't work since few days ago. There is no pump sound when I try to wash my wind shield ... Any help? I would check if fuse has blown, but in my Volvo manual there is no info which fuse should be dedicated to water jet pump ...

Hi everyone, hoping i get a few replies to this one. My volvo still wont spark, even after replacing the coil & distributor cap. A friend who is pretty good with electrics put a live feed to the coil but it still would not spark. Where is the ECU on these models, i read that could be a problem with water corroding the contacts.
Any ideas no matter how trivial would be gratefully received.

Hi, I bought a 94 440 1.8 se last week. Ran great for 10 days then when i tried to start it after work the battery was dead. We pushed it & it bump started within a few yards, i then drove home 10 miles & after approx. 1.5 hours parked up it started with the key. Next morning the battery was dead. So it was a bump start again. went to work and at home time the battery was dead. Now it wont start even with a bump start. Ive checked the alternator, thats fine pumping a healthy 13.5 -14.5 volts. But there seems to be no spark . I was told when i bought it it had no immobiliser. any ideas please regards Trev

Hi all.

I recently bought a new Radio and a wiring harness for my Old Volvo.

The plan was to avoid recabling a lot, so I bought this harness and surely it fits both the outgoing connection and the ISO into the aftermarket radio. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=290453015820

However - i get NO POWER for the radio..

Is there anybody who has experience with fitting a new radio, that could please share their thoughts on best practise?

Had to remove single point injectotion carb and air intake manifold to replace intake/exhaust gasket and in doing so broke one of the small vacuum hoses at the intake manifold... after getting the hoses (and a lot of waiting round to get them deliuvered) iv forgotten whaere they go to. Does it matter which pipe goes to which hole on the manifold. and where do the other ends go to..... should have taken a picture really lol

Hi all, Hopefully someone can help please. My 440 Si 1.8 had it's battery flattened and afterwards would not crank. Tried several good batteries and plus a 50A charger also connected - so not that. There is a loud click and the courtesy light dims but no cranking. It bump starts no problem (so immobiliser must be OK ?). The voltage at the battery drops to about 9V which is odd as I would expect not much drop to operate the solenoid and much lower if the motor was actually getting connected (like nearly a dead short if it is jammed). I've known starters to jam on the flywheel, rotate but not engage, but not do nothing.
Is it a pre-engaged type ? so maybe it is just not engaging and so not contacting ?
Battery cables and posts etc checked cleaned and tight (but not yet on the starter) - I read somewhere about a white main fuse - is that in the feed to the motor ? not seen a fuse there before.

Any other ideas please ?

[FONT=Times][size=7]Here I am again. now my Volvo 400 a month ago had starting problems ie: just would not turn over or start. I have replaced the battery, my local garage replaced the starter motor, great woked for a day then would not start, back to the garage. They placed another cable from the engine to the body. Great working ok for over a month. Came to car yesterday and it would not start, left it a few minutes, turned key started ok. Any Ideas or has anybody had same problem? (ihave replaced both battery terminals one with a new earth lead and the battery is a Bosch sliver one)

Since i have have had victor the 440 the headlights and dash lights have flickered but now it seems to be getting worse. If i undo my seatbelt the warning flasher/clicker seems to make the flickering even worse. What is causing this problem and how do i solve it

Hi There,

Just bought a '94 440 1.8 last sunday and it runs great, very good drive!

Only one thing which is bothering me, when i'm driving between 90-130 KM/H there is a loud high pitched noise coming from the left part of the dashboard. The noise is not always there, but it does come back frequently. I don't think it's a wheel making the noise because the noise doesn't change in pitch or volume as i accelerate or turn the wheel. I suspect it's coming from the ventilation, although it doesn't matter if i turn up the fans or not.

Anyone know what the noise could be and how i can get rid of it?

I've recently bought 1994 Volvo 440 GLT and it seems to have a blocked fuel tank breather or something. Whenever i open filler cap it makes hissing sound and im getting inaccurate fuel gauge reading. I temporarily fixed situation by driving around with cap slightly unscrewed. Can anyone explain me where the fuel tank breather or vent is on 440 and how to fix it?

Hi all, it's my first time posting but have been reading as a guest for a while now.

Everything seemed fine with my 460 1.6 but this morning (summer morning so quite warm) when driving to work a problem occurred. It started to have a whining sound when accelerating in a gear like a supercharger whining. Upon closer focus on the problem, I found that it does this in 2nd, sometimes 3rd and sometimes 4th gear. Also, I can feel/hear something pop or click before the noise begins.

Also, when I change gear the noise is gone, then after a bit after changing gear the noise comes back after the pop/click noise.

Anyone had this problem before? Any ideas on how to sort this out?

I have a 93 volvo 460GLE that as a problem that is driving me mad.

All the lights (headlights, panel, interior etc...) blink like there is a subtle variation in the voltage.

I have checked that all the fuses have the correct Amp, cleaned the ground point off the cable that connect the battery to the chassis and engine (I don't know if there are more ground points).
I also checked the tension of the alternator (that as new brushes), its giving a tension be twin 15.80V and 16.20 This was measured directly in the alternator.

I don't know what to do next.

this only starts when I start the engine, running on battery the lights are normal.

Please help me

hi people, please help me, i bought my 2.0L 440 glt about 4 weeks ago and its had a few starting problems which weren't too bad as i just used to stick it in neutral and it would start fine now i get nothing out of it, ive been told about neutral safety switches and sensors blah blah blah, i cant find a switch anywhere and the only sensor ive found is on the bellhousing under the air filter, is this the one i should be replacing?? any help would be much appreciated. thanks, andrew

I have found loads of great stuff on here before but I have decided to post now as my volvo has died.

I have a non starter, had a friend to have a look at it.. he tried spraying fuel but no spark during igniton, I have changed plugs and leads... does anyone know where I can get a new coil or ECU? Or maybe im missing something simple? Its allways struggled or juddered on low revs and has had low fuel over xmas when my fuel was robbed. Any sugestions???? I dont want to scrap her?!?

Have been trying to sort out a few problems with the electrics got the speedo working on and off and the information unit working.

Ive found that i have no live feed to the radio memory or the clock with the ignition off but works ok with the ignition on... any ideas to whats wrong would be much appreciated

have found wiring diagrams but they dont tie in with the layout of the fuses etc

I am new here ,so hello one and all.
At the moment I have a 440 1.8 i 1995 and it is running on 3 cylinders. I have changed the distributor,the cables,the spark plugs,checked all the vacuum cables/pipes.
I have been running now for about 2000 k's with this problem.
I had the compression checked an cylinder number 4 is dead.
Question 1. Is this dangerous(driving the car in this condition)?
question 2. Where do I go from here,apart from opening up the engine?

I have a volvo 440 1.8i 1994. It's been running rough below 2500rpm for a while and I had it checked yesterday after a full service did not resolve the problem. It seems like cylinder 4 is causing the misfire due to low compression at 40psi (should be about 140psi).

The car only uses about a litre of oil in 10,000 miles, and has 135,000 on the clock. Given the low oil consumption, is this more likely to be a valve issue rather than a piston ring ?

Any pointers would be great.

Hello, I’m new to all of this so might take a bit of getting used to! I own a Volvo 460 1.8si N reg,

I have two problems, first one is about 2months ago my gear box seemed to just die on me, pulled away from a t-junction and changed in to second and then in to 3rd there seemed to be a dull thud, pulled over couldn’t see anything hanging off, then realised the car wouldn’t go in to reverse, 3rd, 4th, or 5th, will only go in to 1st and 2nd. Is this something other than the gear box or is it the gear box knackered? Don’t really want to go taking it all apart to discover it was something else or was just a simple problem.

the second problem is I went to turn over the car a couple of days ago and the battery was completely flat as expected, I took it out and put it on charge then I connected up the next day and tired to start it up, I just got all the lights come up on the dash and it wouldn’t fire up at all, the lights dim when you try and turn it over it just doesn’t kick in to life, I was wondering if anyone could help me with theses problems it would be greatly appreciated

Hi guys and Gals I am a new member and was looking for info about a problem I have with gear change on my 440li.

When I try to engage gear at certain revs I have difficulty and have to apply a great deal of pressure to get the gear to engage,this can happen on both the down/up change. It also seems to get worse with temp? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, I am in the process of adjusting the clutch cable at intervals to see if this help.

My 94/95 N reg 440 automatic will only go into reverse gear. The problem seemed to start when I was on the motorway and it seemed to be changing gear on it's own. Then I couldn't get it in gear at all. I switched off for 10mins then back on again and it was fine for a few miles - well it got me home. Now I have the problem of no forward gear at all. Any ideas please. Thank you very much.

Hows it going my Volvo owning Family? I have finally found some new shoes for victor so im now selling the remaining three Cetus alloys he had on before. Two of the alloys come with new tyes and one alloy has a bald tyre. The three wheels are in excellent condition (one has a small mark and a little kerbing which is shown in the photos) Ideal if you have damaged your alloys and need a replacement or want an alloy spare. I am willing to swap one alloy for an alloy of the same style that is on Victor now. (see photo victors new shoes) so i can have a matching alloy spare. I want £50 a wheel for the ones with new tyres and £30 for the wheel with a bald tyre. Im 25mins from kidderminster Buyer to collect. Thanks and Peace

Ok, so let me say thank you for trying to help me out first! I have zero knowledge with cars and I am desperately trying to help my mum out who's Volvo 440 appears dead as she cannot afford to get it fixed.

So in short, the car was working fine, one of the remote immobilisers stopped working so she switched over to the spare and it worked fine, for a while! Then the other day that one stopped working as well. So as it stands, the car is on our driver, appears completely dead. The immobiliser remote has a lock and unlock button and neither does anything, we have had the batteries replaced on both remotes and it has made no difference. I can unlock the car and lock it again, but only one door at a time. The red LED light on the dash doesn't flash indicating to me the car is completely dead. The engine doesn't start, in fact nothing happens when you put the key in the ignition, lights don't come on etc etc....

If anything can begin to point me in the right direction I would be incredibly grateful

I have a volvo 440 2.0i as my run about car 1994.

I have a prob with the engine, 2 days ago if i was in 1st or 2nd gear ( or any gear ) around the 1500 - 2500 rpm mark the car would start to kangaroo while driving, even when you put your foot to the floor it would just make the kangaroo get worse then all of a sudden it would spring back to life, it will even do it with the idleing, it will sit around 850rpm then dip to 400 rpm then back up.

So saturday i replaced the below:

Dis cap
Rotor arm
Ht leads
Plugs
Air filter

Took it out for a run and even though the car runs better the prob is still there, you can drive it for 1 houre and it will be fine , then out of the blue it will play up[ again.

so my next thinking was fuel filter as this had never been done, i changed it over for a new one and the stuff that came out of the filter i could not belive it, it was pure black, but again this has not done any thing?

The only 1 time i had this prob is once i went though a large puddle and the engine would kangaroo for 1 - 2 min then stalled, left it for about 2 houres and its been fine since, as its snowing bad here could water/ice or snow be causing this, do the 440's suffer with this.

Could you please help as this seems to be getting wores

Hi my volvo 440 1.7i has a little problem that started yesterday, i turn on the key he starts but starts to fail and shuts off, if i accelerate he shakes a little but hangs on then he runs almost normally, after a while starts to shake again like some of the sparks where failing but they are new like the sparks cables,the diagnostics code comes 1-1-1, normal, i don't know what to do can it be any sensor? or the distribution cap?

im going to pick up my 1994 440 on sunday, Its a run around to get me about as i have just run into mega issues with my subaru impreza. The 440 im picking up has 46k on the clock with two ladie owners. The bodywork is clean with no rust. Roughtly how much is one of these worth ? just to check i havent overpaid. Also is there anything i should pay particular attention to when checking it over ?

My Volvo (1995, 2.0i) has battery fault, after replace it, immobilizer led flashing blink, blink, blink........(fast)
Door lock/unlock works fine and motor start-up, but that led blinking
Test points show (socket 1:) 5, 1, 3 . Maybe the tests not working, if immobilizer led blinking ?
What to do so as works fine?

Ok, I bought my 1996 1.6 es 440 before Christmas with 21,000 miles on it.
It seems to have always had a lazy turn over to get it started. Lately the lazy turn over had got worse, eventually the battery had packed up and needed it jump starting each time. So i bought a new one, it was ok at first now i'm getting the same problem again, i'm no mechanic but a few think the problem could be related to the starter motor.

Well hello my happy Volvo owners,
It looks like summer is upon us here in the UK So now is the time for us to do all those little niggling jobs that we have had over winter that we have been putting off until the weather picks up. Well the good weather is here so this weekend (if it stays nice) am removing all componants from the engine bay and replacing all screws nuts and bolts holding the ancilleries and giving Victors engine bay and engine a good clean and sanding any rust spots, bolt holes and re painting them with a nifty compressor powered miniture spray gun for tight spots (been waiting for an excuse to justify buying it lol). If there is time il be removing the carpet and jetwashing it using carpet cleaner as the cleaning fluid. Brings the carpet up a treat - NOTE this will take a couple of days to dry out thoroughly in the sun and it must be completely dry before putting it back in the car. Yes carpet cleaners can be used but they dont get in deep enough and you cant get to the carpet that is obscured by panels, behind pedals etc.. Will be putting photos up for those that are interested. PS After the Alloy wheel debarcle of me buying the wrong wheels for victor... i have now sold them. Does anyone know if The wheels from a T5 will fit 16inch. or does anyone have any Volvo 440 Alloys (not the six spoke curvy wheels that came with the 440 GLT) they would like to sell?

I have a '96 460 and i think previous owner has disconnected the factory alarm module. I want to check it out but i couldn't find the location for it. Where it is located exactly? I see on 850 there is a relay panel where it is attached. But on 460 i can only find one relay panel, which is in the engine compartment, but it doesnt have the module.

Hi I bought this car about 6 weeks ago and the headlights are realy dim. I have checked the reflectors and the seem
ok, I have put brighter xenon bulbs in and still no brighter. it is as if thier is not enough voltage getting to them. they do not get brighter or dimmer when i turn other electrics on & off. could it be an earthing problem?
One of my headlight wipers stays up sometimes. Any i deas?

Hi everyone I have recently purchased a 1996 440 Volvo SE which has approx 120000kms and has been serviced regularly up to 110000kms with log books.

After running for awhile it seems to develop a ping in the motor under load, although it does not over heat. However this is not evident when starting from rest or for the first 15 mins approx of driving.

Could this be a possible faulty air flow meter?

Hallo to all on this cold wet start to english summertime.
Have read the fault codes from the jumper box in victor volvo yet cannot seem to erase the faults. Jumper lead in no 2 plug socket, press button for more than 1 second read succesive faults. (can do all this no problems) Now after i have read the codes i press the button for more than 5 seconds and the led is supposed to light up after three to ten seconds, Then press button for another 5 or more seconds and this is supposed to delete fault codes. I cannot get the led to light after pressing the button for more than five seconds. What am i doing wrong. Thanks and PEACE

Have just purchased these wheels for victor the 440 volvo and low and behold they dont fit lol These are five stud 195/60/15 i have put them on ebay but if anyone wants them on here please let me know I am willing to swop these wheels for ones that will fit a 440 Pref the same style but they must be in as good condition as the ones i am swapping. All four wheels have matching tyres and are all well within the legal uk limit. I am about 25 mins away from kidderminster. £100 buyer collects. Thanks and Peace

Hello friends as you may have read Victor Volvo has just clocked 100,000 miles today so I think he deserves a present this weekend. Some shiny new shoes.

Now I want some new alloy wheels for him as he has the standard GLT six spoke alloys which i feel look a bit naff. I dont want any blinged up aftermarket wheels, I want to stick with some standard fitment Volvo alloys poss from a later model of volvo. My question is what model of volvo will have wheels that will fit a 440 or will any volvo wheel fit any volvo. Thanks my eager to help volvo owners

I had a problem with my immobiliser on my 1995 volvo 440, so in an attempt to disable the immobiliser i ripped the glove box out looking for it systematically removing wires and re-plugging them back in then i went under steering wheel to fuses and removed some and put them back but one fell out i just plugged it anywhere now the problem is I have returned to my car this evening and too my shock the immobiliser was working again with fob but when i went to start engine i am getting the emissions light and it will not start I am wondering if this may be a wire or the fuse? if anyone can help me i would be very grateful also the emissions light was never lit before I attacked the car trying to disable immobiliser many thanks claire
