Hi there, I've just bought a volvo 440 1.9 td GLT, very happy with it. It came with remote central locking but doesn't appear to work. Have changed batteries, switching ignition on/off 5 times etc., and removing batteries out of remote and pressing buttons 5 times etc., but to no avail. Does anybody know of a way to program the remote to car at home?

My wife has a 1992, 440 and I have changed the carburettor, Put fuel line and jet cleaner in the petrol, new spark plugs, new HT leads, new distributor cap and rotor arm, new fuel line filter, new air filter, had carburettor tuned at garage and I still cannot get it to tick over very well.
Sometimes when it is driven at 30 mile per hour it feels like it is misfiring but it isn't.
Could it be the catalytic converter?

OK I will start at hte beginning as this is my first time on the forum, hi.

I recently bought a Volvo 440 Turbo 1991 H-reg, I am completely happy with it, it is a completely different car to drive to the 440Li I also own. I believe it is running beautifully but have had a PROBLEM WITH THE SPEEDO. when I bought the car the speedo was on/off, I thought it was the sensor but the computer was calculating the mileage fine - so it wasn't.

I removed the instrument panel and fiddled with the needle and I did feel a small click, i thought i was happy. NO! I reconnected it all very carefully but when I turned the ignition the speedo rose to the top of the chart (ie. Faceing dirrectly UP)
Then smoke came from the speedo.

I thought it was just the speedo or instrument panel, so I looked on ebay and was lucky enough to see someone breaking the exact same model as my car. I asked him if the instrument panel aws working and he said yes and i bought it.

When I fitted this panel the speed did not move at all, it ended up that no matter which instrument panel I fit, nothing happens in the speedo, the rest is fine except the computer can no longer calculate average mileage/speed etc.

I have bought a speed sensor brand new but can't find where to fit it, my local volvo garage isn't even 100% sure. I think it may copy 480 models ?dunno??

One of you guys will fully understand the workings of the speedo/panel etc. and may know what the fault is? I hope so, been trying fore months now

Using the site for the first time and i wondered if any one can help. I have a 91 460 Gli and a bad earth problem. every time i put on the heated rear window, High Beam or fog lights it seems to light all the warning lights on the dashboard for those paticular items, i can put one item on or more and it will vary which warning lights come on!

i just got hold of a volvo 440si taxed and tested.
only 70 quid

but no towbar

i have been trying to source a 2nd hand one but to on avail.....

did not want to buy a new one as i thought would be a waste of money as nowt really to go wrong with a 2nd hand one..

i have been told that the 460 is compatable with the 440..
but still no luck at locating one.

is any other model of volvo towbar compatable?

or does anyone know a decent priced volvo breakers who would stock what i need.

The warning light on the fuel guage is permantly on even though it is full of petrol. Any ideas before i pay out a small fortune taking it to the garage?

The factory alarm on my 440 hasn't been working since I got the car, so i decided to give it a go & get it working. I have the dash light doing all the right things with the key-fob and the indicators flash at all the right times. Trouble is, the siren doesn't make a sound. All 3 wires for the alarm were cut (2 inside the siren which I reconnected - black/red), but the blue one remains the problem - WHERE SHOULD IT GO??? I don't know what it's for, or where it should be connected to. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I have a 1996 440 1.8LE and the driver's side rear light housing is taking in water. I suspect that the rubber seal needs replacing, but I can't get the housing off! I have removed all 4 nuts inside the boot, but it still won't come off. Am I missing something? I'm starting to think some idiot has glued the damn thing on....

I'm putting a car in for part exchange, my 440, and I want to take the alloys off it before I do. There's no cheap volvo wheels to be found anywhere, and there's not a single volvo in sight at my local scrappie's.

Are there any other makes of car's wheels that will fit on a Volvo 440? I'm just after a cheap alternative so I can make some money back on the alloys.

I have a Volvo 440i Automatic and love it. Problem is that I lost all transmission without warning except reverse and am puzzled. I got the car home and checked the fluid level which is fine and no leaks. When I tried the car the following day, Drive was back and I took it for a spin and lost the drive again as soon as it warmed up. I only went about half a mile round the block. No warning lights, no funny noises except that when I lose forward momentum it sound like the car is stuck in neutral, just revs and nothing else.
Is my poor baby terminal or am I just being a bad father?

A new gearbox is going to cost me around £950.00 fitted so please help if you can guys and gals.

After approx. 100 miles driving at a speed of 90 miles an hour, my Volvo 440 gets too warm and cannot go faster than 50 miles an hour. The car bumps and schocks, looks like false air in the engine. After cooling down (30 minutes), the car is been able to run again. It seems that driving at 65 miles an hour, is no problem for a longer period.

As no garage knows wha it is, I would like to ask if somebody is familiar with this problem.

Help! Mother in Law problem.....

Got Phone Call that the car was dead, the battery was flat and it wouldn't start.
Went to investigate, used my JumpStarter but noticed it had a bit of a problem.
This is where I need help.

I noticed the following symptoms on attempting to start it.

The grey box (function unknown until I get the workshop manual) that is fixed to the bulkhead is 'chattering' twice a second or so. It sounds like relays going in and out.
Other dashboard lights that flicker in unison with the grey box are
Hazard Light
Seatbelt warning
Oil Light
Handbrake on
Bulb gone Indicator

Sidelights flicker also.

No Heater Coil lights illuminate and when you try to start the engine all the lights stop flashing but dim and the engine does nothing.

Also if the ignition key is removed the hazard lights work fine, headlights work fine also.

So I guess that something in the igntion system has drained the battery flat and is now causing the above. Any Ideas? I need to get the mother in law mobile again fast!!!!!!!!

Recently the timming belt went ( damaged 1or 2 valves ) on my 460 ES 2.0 i and took it to garage to rebuild the engine and ever since the idle speed is reving around 1800rpm.

the garage says that they have replaced the idle valve , all the sensors and still can not fix the problem however if you take one of the senors out ( disconnected the air temp sensor wire ) then it comes down to 900rpm ( normal) but this leaves me with the problem of temp. gauge going to just below the red and immision light comes on and will not pass the MOT and does not start ( first thing in the morning ) as well as it use to do.

Can you please help ? I have already spent £1000.00

Hi there volvo owners, my cousin has a 460 Si and I have bought him a superchip off of eBay with the ECU.

He has the B18U Single Point Injection engine.

Where is the ECU likely to be located in this car, the haymes manual offers no help at all.

Can someone please tell me if they have had problems installing a cd player and not getting the aerial to extend. I have bought the Sony CDX R3300, in the instructions for installation it says that if you have an automated aerial that doen not have its own relay then the stereo could damage the aerial.

Need to nkow prior to installation as stereo is still packaged, i can send back if it no good.

Someone please help with a problem that developed today with my 1996 VOLVO 440i....
(i'm not so hot with car mechanics and would appreciate any help identifying the problem)
...... the engine revs between 1,000 and 2,000 at standstill then sticks at 2,000 revs. This happened a week ago but seemed to fix itself but now back again today.

Any ideas?

My volvo 440 turbo radio connector is giving me grief! i had a 1.8Xi K reg before the turbo (which is H reg) and i had no problems but now the cd player wont go in the turbo as the connectors are completely different! Having spoken to halfords, they didnt have the correct connector and i was wondering if anyone could please help me to get a connector sorted! Hope someone can help, its driving me maaaad! Can anyone tell me the CORRECT thread details for a wheel bolt on a 460 1990. Ie;, thread , pitch . I had a wheel bolt break on front of car, removed hub assy complete to vertically drill the old part of bolt out. There is still a whisker of the old thread in there, so I want to buy a tap to clean out threads properly.
Also, is there a brake overhaul kit to refurbish a rear brake calliper. The pad adjuster keeps unwinding, making handbrake useless after a while.

Have a M reg 440 GLT and the remote locking is not working. Believe that these things reset the codes regularly and they can get out of synch???

Anyone know of any easy way of getting this sorted without resorting to visiting my local Volvo dealer with chequebook at the ready....

just bought a 480 1.7 turbo for a song so thought i would say hi. needs a new clutch cable, any ideas were to get it from. i have a 1.7 e.s one from the same year would that do. many thanks if anyone knows.

What absorbers are better for mounting on Volvo 460 1994 year? I heard that no absorbers, except typical for Volvo work properly.
