Hi all I'm Mike and in 2 weeks i will be driving a Volvo 440 turbo LHD 4000 miles through the Saraha desert to Banjul in the Gambia only just got the car but need some advice.....

there is an infomation centre and it has green lights on the outside and red inside one of the red ones keeps coming on can anyone tell me what they mean?

and secondly the engine at idle drops...

The radio wants the code which I know but how do you enter these numbers? It isnt the numbers that you see on the panel... so what is it If its relevant, the cars a 440, not turbo and is an L reg, so it was made in 95(I think)

and I just remembered, is it true that when you put in the wrong password the first time you have to wait 30 mins, then the second time you get it wrong 1 hour...

What have you people got on your wheels? And has anyone ever had theirs nicked and if so what did you do to make sure it never happened again?

I ask because the ones that came with the car were nicked, so I went out and bought some cheap ones. To stop em from gettin nicked I tied them to the wheel with some plastic. But having said that, 1 cap was still nicked!

Hello everybody. Does anyone know how the manual under-bonnet adjusters are supposed to work? My headlamps are set too high and although OK for MOT, when I have my stuff in the boot they dazzle too many people on these Yorkshire backroads.

I'm reluctant to apply brute force to the plastic adjuster heads without knowing what the other threaded plastic bits are.

Hi is there a way to test the oil pump on the 480 turbo engine? And if it does need replacing can you tell me where, so far the only source we've found of them is the Volvo main dealer for £136!! So pretty steep!

Hi jus a quick question my 440 failed the mot because the nearside head lamp is movin i opened the bonnet and found out that the adjuster for the head light is broken, is there any ways to quick fix it by maybe bolting it down or should i just get a new adjuster, if i do get 1 where is the best place to get 1 from.

Hello there, what a small world it is, i have just bought a 440 LE and lo-and-behold it was the one for sale by paulwetherhill on this very forum!

I have to say that I paid more than he did but for the time and work he put inot getting it driveable I think I got a bargain still.

Guess what? I'm driving down the M1 this afternoon on the way back from the Milton Keynes Volvo service shop, I'm doing 70mph and move left onto the exit ramp at the Luton junction.

I press the brake pedal...

...nothing happens

I press harder...

... nothing happens

I'm still doing 70 and heading towards red...

Hi I got 440 and just woundering that do the indicators turn off automatically when turn the road or do u have to do them manually, just wanted to know beacuse mines dont turn off them selve when i do a turn.

440gs 2.0i. New battery fitted. On the first start of the day it sound like the battery needs charging slightly. After running for very short period of time it jumps into life. Just the first start of the day. Battery light works ok on turn of key, and is not coming on whilst driving, so alternator should be ok.
I am going to service it this week, but cannot work out why it would sound...

step 1 key barrel removed able to start car with pliers

step 2 replaced barrel (new) car does not start

step 3 removed barrel used pliers car starts!

step 4 ordered steering column complete with lock and barrel!

step 5 fitted steering column still the same problem

step 6 removed entire contact unit left hand side of lock and am able...

Hi just purchased a 96 440gs2.0i, 70,000 miles. reasonably well looked after, serviced at regular intervals. i was wondering what sort of fuel consumption i should be getting, both around town and on longer drives.

I'm having a problem with my 440. When I first start driving it goes fine but when I turn off the engine and restart it feels like it is missing. I get kangaroo petrol syndrome accelerate stop accelerate stop. can anyone help.

there is a really odd knocking sound coming from the engine and it seems to be on the drives side. this sound only occurs when not brealing or puting any power on (free wheeling on teh clutch) does any one no what it is andhow to get rid of it

Hello everyone. I was the proud owner of a Volvo 440 Si 1.9 TD for all of 24 hours - on second day of ownership it's as dead as a dodo so I'm here to seek out some help.

Stopped my 460 and tried to lock with key fob but would not work,also would not open to disable immobiliser so car was not drivable Odd thing is, it is the second time this happened when parked in this same spot,but first time it responded to the spare key fob when brought from home,thought at first it could have been a nearby radio transmitter,which is known to cause such a problem.

my horn has packed in, so i installed a new one, and new fuse to no avail. i was thinking of just installing a switch in a gap in the dashboard and wiring it to the new horn via the fusepanel etc.

I just bought this 1994 automatic Volvo 440.
It was working fine yesterday, when I move it around the carpark to remove my other old volvo.

Today, when I try to start it, it makes a dying trying to start engine noise.

The only thing I have not fix it is the temperature gauge which is always at zero.

Two points...

1. I've replaced my heater matrix but whilst reconnecting the tube to the unit I've noticed a small tube in the engine compartment that comes form under the air filter. The tube is about 4 mm across with a 2 mm hole down it, any ideas where this should be connected to? I think it may be to do with measuring the temperature of the engine?

I bought a 1996 Volvo 440 LE 1.8. the rattling and the noise coming from the exhaust made take it to a garage . they showed me the catalytic converter and i could not believe it. It was glowing hot , like magma ! I was told it needed to be replaced, which i did, alongside with the spark plugs. The running of the car is a bit better, but the cat is still red hot! When I shift to reverse or first gears the car is jolted as if I ran over a rock. It also happens less frequently when I am driving at 90 KM/hour.

I think it may be an issue with the Differential pressure rather than the gearbox. Is there a photo of the different connections for the vacuum tubes? I noticed on my 1.9-Liter engine that one vacuum tube is missing.

When cold you can just about get gears, clutch pedal bite point at bottom of travel. When warm no chance of reverse or 1st, 2nd a bit crunchy. The rear fog light has stopped working on my 1998 440si . The dashboard indication for the fog light doesn't illuminate and there is no power to the fog light bulb. I also have no power to the tail light filaments of the stop/tail lights. The stand-alone tail lights work OK. Are these problems related?
