ok the engine has been running badly and the mpg has been bad, pulled the engine codes and I get a 121 - air pressure sensor. put the spare on and no joy - got another from a breakers - still no joy. investigated the hoses to the single point injector, and aha - there is a loose fit at the injector end and the vacuum pressure is quite low. so I replace the short piece of hose at the bottom. thats when I found there was a restrictor, which was almost totally blocked, anyhow I have replaced that short piece of hose, and checked all the other vacuum pipes- what do you know - there is another blocked vacuum hose - in the restrictor once again. hmm well hopefully thats it fixed now - fingers crossed.
I am also getting a 231 code which seems to be speedo sensor, but the speedo is registering correctly? Hmm ideas on that one?

i am willing to sell at £300. It is mot'd til June 08 and taxed til end of month. also the windows and central locking are not working. the central locking is intermittent and have bought new motors for the windows worth £100. looking for a quick sale.
Due to move and need it gone by then. First to see will buy.
it also has a new battery and an info centre where you can see you average speed limit and many other things.

I know for a fact my 86000Mile 1.6 440 has never had it's valve clearances checked. Wondered if anyone has experience of thie as I've never adjusted shimmed ones before.

I've got a 440GL and the driver door handle got harder and harder to operate to make the door open until one day - 'spang!!!' the actual metal piece you pull on came fully up without releasing the door and locked there.

It is still there. Stuck in the 'up' position.

I've taken the trim out inside and had a look and I just can't see what's holding it up there. I can't see what's wrong and therefore I can't see how to fix it.

I feel like bashing it with a hammer to make it come down but I'd expect that'd break something that's holding it up - and that something might be important.

But it might not.

Does anyone know?

What caused it to be harder and harder to pull up?
Why won't it go down? (The mechanism works fine on the internal lever)
What should I do to fix it?

Hi everyone,
Have been experiencing problems with the old alternator during which the radio started asking for the code (which I never knew). After a few breakdowns I had to get a new alternator, which turned out to be faulty. Before replacing it, I decided to test the charging system to see if there was a problem elsewhere that bugged the alternators.

As part of the charging system testing, I removed both negative and positive leads from the battery for a few hours (to check the no-load voltage) and when I was finished, the radio was back alive, never mind the code!

Also, when I first got the car it was left for dead and I had to recharge the battery, and the radio worked straight away, but then I did not know about the radio code issue!

Looks like the radio forgets about the code situation after being disconnected for long enough. Hope this helps the forum members...

I have recently got a M reg 440 TD to replace a older petrol version.

I have noticed over the last few weeks the bakes are not particually good, no odd noises, dont pull to either side but just dont stop you as quick as I think they should, and certainly not as quick as the previous petro version.

Is this normal? are they a bit naff and I just have to get used to it or could there be somthing wrong, if so what ? if is was a petrol car I would suspect the servo a bit knackered or not getting enough vacume, but being diesel, not entirly sure how they are assisted

Hi there

Has anyone run a 440 1.9 TDi on a mixture of Diesel and Cooking oil?

I have heard that it can be done but you need to check the fuel pump type, of which there are two. One that works and one that wont.

Does anyone know if this is true and how to discover what type of pump I have?

Just bought a Volvo 460 1.8 automatic and is a dream, H reg and only done 59,000 miles. we seem to be having some difficulties. the Electric windows don't work. the fuses have been changed. any suggestions.
also the centra locking doesn't work but hearing the mechanics working on every door. what cud that be?

First topic, first problem! So happy having found this phorum.

I have a problem with my 440 GLT ´89 (210.000km) rear drive light. It usually doesn´t cause too many problems, but electrical ones are the most typical...it is not wet, I´m in Spain...!

When I put rear drive, it doesn´t switch on. I´ve read somewhere it is possible that a bad switch could be the reason.
Please, I need some help. Where is it located? Can it be easily changed? How much does it usually cost?
Does somebody have any picture or scanned sketch?

Do you know if it could be any other problem, apart from bad wires?

hi all,
i think my 460 autobox has just died on me;
it happened yesterday without hardly any warning, as i pulled away from traffic lights it revved away for a couple of seconds before engaging, then wheelspinning off, (much to my embarrassement, as the look on pedestrians/motorists faces conveyed a sense of 'he's old enough to know better!') 10 mins later i arrived at my destination, put it into reverse & it just revved away again this time refusing to engage, put it back into drive & the same thing happened, not engaging at all.
i called out the aa, when they got there, it went into reverse & drive & both times engaged, aa agreed to follow me home in case it went again, but, by the time i'd got back in to set off it had done it again (so, probably quits as soon as the box warms up?)
the car is a n reg 1.8se with a cvt transmission (i think; p-r-n-d-l ) 77,000 miles. it passes the m.o.t. everytime & this is the first real problem i've had with it. although over the past 2 weeks i've had to top-up the coolant levels a couple of times, so i may have a leaky hose/rad too. i'd like to keep it but am concerned the cost may outweigh the value of the car.
has anyone had similar transmission problems, or can tell me roughly how much it will cost to fix as all the garages say they need to see it first, which means i have to get it towed to them.
any help at all will be greatly appreciated,

well i've just picked put an 1996 N 440 si 1.8 and think it's great..

i was just wondering do they all have a alarm as standard? or is there a way to test the alarm?

i have central locking and an red LED near the heated seats button, but am unsure (without kicking it lol)

I just got '90 460 (I've bought it for 50€ ) which has B18FT engine - with turbo and intercooler. Does anybody know if it's possible to replace my engine B18FP with B18FT from '90 460? I have '95 460.

The handle on the driverside door doesn't open the lock anymore.

The key turns, the central locking mechanism works. But pulling the handle won't open the door.

I've can't find any technical drawings online how it's supposed to work and it's difficult to see what is to go where.

Any help would be appreciated,

ive a 480es thats been sat in my garage for the best part of 3 years
time to get the old girl back on the road
before the car went in to the garage it had a bad problem" hunting" when idling
iam in the oppinion it my be the oxygen sensor

the 480es ive owed for 13 years before was my parents so in the fam since new
just got m hands on a great 480 for a donor
but the problem its in far better nick than mine lots of t&t
same colour

Hi everybody,

I own a volvo 440 1,9 td 1995 and recently the car acts weird in curves or driving over bumps and stuff. It really feels like he's going to break out of line. I've tried to drive without my hands on the wheel and it seems to really drive straight forward.

I thought maybe it's because there are non-original rims on it with wider tyres (185-50-15) , or maybe because one of the rims is not straight...
I also noticed when I turn sharp at very low speeds the right wheel of the car seems to turn wider all of a sudden, or loosen or so, it just feels that way...

Anyone a suggestion?

The car drives nice, but seems very unstable!

Another question i pose: 1995 440 2.0litreAre there after market OIL FILTERS about witj out hhaving to get Genuine VOLVO oil filters?

Here in OZ ... i seem to be told that there are no aftermarket oil filters .
The same goes with radiators hoses !!!!
Hence maybe if available i could source them from UK ...or elsewheer

My name is Stuart. I live in Scotland and I have just bought a 440 for the princely sum of £450 (!).

It runs sweet as a nut and is a very comfy car. I have a slight problem with temperature gauge (it reads low) and the cabin does not heat up. Assuming it is the thermostat stuck open I needed to locate it. A previous post by Black Beauty4 in response to Kristian 0 helped.

I have been having various water leak problems and have located the source to be the rear light cluster. I have removed all the trim panels from around the boot but I can't figure out how to remove the rear light clusters themselves!

I have removed the three visible nuts, and also the middle bit of plastic trim over the boot lock. Then I got stuck! The plastic is very brittle and has been broken by the previous owner (and a bit by me) so I am very wary of smashing the whole lot to bits!

My car was working fine apart from the passenger side window motor. Whilst replacing that I had the car not running for about 3 weeks (long story) and the battery went completely dead.

I recharged the battery and got the car running again, but then when I turned the headlights on they wouldn't popup!! The fuse for the popup motors is fine, and the bulbs themselves are coming on correctly underneath the bonnet.

It is strange because neither headlight now pops up which leads me to think it is a general electronics problem - especially considering the dead battery. Is this a common thing to happen, and is there an easy solution?

Just like in the title, my 1991 460 Auto has this intermittent fault.

Starts & runs just fine from home, however, if the weather is real warm (or vehicle real warm) it can just refuse to restart - no click, no noise , no anything
dash lights illuminate as normal but nothing happens when the key turns.

I have had to wait varying periods of time to restart, which again just seems like pot-luck - must be something thermostatic????

If you have any experience of a similar problem, or able to cure - please help

The engine on my Volvo 480 is making a wheezing noise, and I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the clutch.

Has anyone else encountered this problem, and if so, is it an expensive job to fix?

Today my better half parents bought a 1995 VOLVO 440 SI or GLT (dont know the spec)

On driving it back from Brisbane to home about 110klms.
Her father later stated that ... it seemed to be be at 110klm doing 3000rpm
and that he thought tyres were to blame.

TYRES are seemly new Bridgestone at the front
Pirelli at rear

He then looked the tyres and thought they were wrong as as they were
185x15x50 and were on alloy rims

That they should be say 185x15x60 or 65....................as stated in the drivers handbook

IS THIS TRUE?

I said i would get in touch with you GURUS to nite ..with a response to him 2morrow.

Could it be that ...
The 440 came out with 14" steel rims
That alloys be optioned at 15"... with the corresponding low profile tyres

Help... How much of an emergency is a slow leak in power steering ubit. Is it hard to replace seal?

after replacing the ht leads/spark plugs/dizzy cap/rotor arm and idle control valve (black box with a spring and rod that acts on throttle to keep revs stable at idle, you know the one) i have drawn a blank at the messy idle (when slowing to a stop or just idling) that my girlfriends 440 1.8se 1992 model has, i did the fault code routine and it brought up 1-2-1 = air pressure sensor fault, what does it look like and where in the engine bay is it. is it easy to replace and how much does it cost, i have read a few topics on this and they usually end up clearing after replacing the parts i have replaced.

i cleared the code and it came back so its not an old code thats not been cleared, so im putting my money on that, if i knew what it looked like i'd be able to do it, i just have no idea, i've had a good look round the engine bay and removed leads to sensors to see which affected it, only the two by the throttle body itself, please help me, its doin my head in my girlfriend being so upset that her car isnt running properly

couple more things, the plugs were black as the ace of spades which in my book is unburnt fuel/too rich

constant smell of petrol out of the exhaust

im presuming that something isnt detecting how much air is going into the engine and it doesnt know how much fuel to put in, kind of safe guarding it against running lean? probably way off but i try

edit: i see a few people talking about oxygen sensors on here, problems like this being solved by fitting a new one, is that actually called a lambda sensor, like on most of the parts sites?

I am currnetly having a bad run with volvos and cam belts, about 4 weeks ago I had a 440 1.6 petrol volvo where the cam belt went and damaged the engine beyond economic repair now I have had the cam belt in a replacement 1.9 TD go

Basic question is it an interference engine ? I like to have an idea when I push it into the garage

Hi - my son has recently bought an ageing Volvo 440 Si 1992 Reg and has been asking me a lot of questions that I cannot easily answer"! I thought it would therefore be a good idea to try the forum - if it is helpful I will reccomend that he joins to cut out my middle man role.
The latest problem is a jamming Starter Motor - I managed to talk him through un-jamming it but I would like to know what to do next to stop it happening again

I'm new to the forum and need to solve a problem with a seizing water pump ??

Problem manifested itself as loosing drive \ power etc and just made it home last night. Man from the RAC, this morning, diagnosed that the problem was the Water Pump which looked to be seizing up ??

My question (s) to those out there with the knowledge are -:

Are seizing water pumps fixable without the need to replace ??

If I need to replace can I do it myself or is it a major garage job ??

Am I better off just getting it replaced, and if so does anyone have experience of this and the cost's involved ??

I think that should do for starters..... Hoping to find some answers soon ??

The idle problem came back a week or so ago during that cooler weather we experienced (could air temp be a factor ?)

Again i disconnected the ECU and re connected it and it was perfect.

see how long it last this time.

Hello, I have searched for an answer but can't find one anywhere. I just wanted to know why my diagnostics box only has wired connections for connectors 1,3 &7? I can't check 2 or 6 (which is what I want in order to test the ECUs) as there are no pins there! Has anyone else found this?

I have an idling problem, and a slight fuel consumption problem and have checked as thoroughly as I can but to no avail. The garage is stumped as am I - have even changed the ECU for a known working one, and it still made no difference. I wanted to test the ECUs to see if they can come up with something, but it turns out I can't!?

-Incase anyone here can help, my cambelt went a while back resulting in the car sitting for just over 5 months while I found a decent cylinder head. Took it to my trusted Volvo mechanic and had him fix it all up for me. It runs absolutely fine apart from when the engine warms up, the rpm climbs, whereas it's supposed to drop to around 850rpm. When hot, it will sit at ~1400rpm. So I have subsequently lowered it so that it sits at ~900rpm when warm, but of course it's too low when cold now. The other problem is that it seems to use more petrol. I was regularly getting over 40mpg on runs, but now my average is mid 20s and on a run I get 30mpg. I presume it's running rich, but can't work out why. Disconnecting the idle valve makes no difference, nor does earthing the test wire, so it seems as though it's stuck at 'rest' position. It has been tested though and is working. I disconnected the lambda, but that didn't seem to make a great deal of difference either.

Any ideas? (sorry about the long post!)
