Hi all, I just bought a 1993 440 base model without central locking.
Everything works, just a slight problem when locking the driver's door. It takes up to a minute of delicate manipulation of the key to enable it to be turned in the locking direction. Unlocking is not a problem. The simple solution is a new lock-barrel, but this means carrying 2 keys, also some expense. I notice that the passenger door locking button can be pushed down in order to lock it, but the driver's door has some kind of inhibitor to prevent this (to avoid unintentionally locking the keys in the car). I would like to remove this inhibitor so that I can lock the driver's door by pressing down the locking button. Anyone out there who knows how this can be done?

Sorry to be a nuisance, but would someone mind giving me an extremely simple description (if this is at all possible) of how to change the bulb in one of the headlamps. Including what bulb I need etc. I am determined to do it myself no matter what it takes!

i am the new one on this forum but have the question already.
what happened: there is a pull off spring in the brake systen in the rear wheel in volvo 460 reg 97'. or at least should be. unfortunately it has broken.
have you got any idea where can i buy this spring??
i just need the spring and not the whole repair kit. any idea hiw much it may cost??

would appreciate any help

I've got a LH drive 460 with a carburettered B18K engine. On the bulkhead next to the cylindrical vapour separator is a large rubber grommet with a plastic cylindrical thing set in it. The grommet also takes the screen washer pipe through one side.

The only problem is that in an earlier photograph I have, this plastic cylindrical thing has a pipe on it which disappears off under the air filter casing toward the carb. Now, after having some work done on the motor this pipe is missing and there's no recollection of how it was plumbed in. The haynes guide refers to this item as a vacuum accumulator whilst The Volvo part description for this is a "cold start device", part number VO3446535.

Does anybody know where this thing connects on to the engine. I'm having hot running problems which I think are related to a vacuum leak and this missing pipe may be contributing.

Hi, just bought a '96 460ES (not 480 ES unfortunatly!) and the centre panel (heater /etc) illumination is not working. Quick attempt at dismantling suggests there must be a better way - suggestions requested... Oh yes, and first post, so hello everyone!

Hi, I have a 1996 460 Si 1.8, and both the oxygen sensor and headlamp wiper could do with replacing. Any ideas if this is a job i should steer clear of and leave to the professionals or could i tackle it myself...with limited machanical knowledge!!

I have my eye on a 1996 460si 1.8 and was looking for some advice...this will be my first Volvo and it will be mainly used to ferry me to and from work, we have a family car which will be used for everything else. Is there anything I should look out for or is this a perfect buy formy needs??? It will also be the first second hand car I have bought!!

I have a 11th hand Volvo 460 Sli, however no handbook is in the car, is anyone able to tell me what type of Transmission fluid I should use and if there are any specific instructions to filling it up (hot, cold, run through all the gears), I had a quick search but couldent find anthing...

p.s I'm not a mechanically minded person so could you be as informative as possible in your responses about any specific instructions (other than using a funnel and pouring slowly down the dipstick pipe). Thank you!!

I have a new ( for me ) 1995 2L 480 ES.
When I bought it, there were problems with a very rough idle and pick up. Most of this was solved by fixing the ground wire on the MAP sensor.
After that the car acted the same way as a carburator engine where the vacuum hose on the distributor is disconnected: hesitation on pick up.
Measurements from the Lambda (oxygen) sensor were reading between .27V and .7V
with about a 1 second cycle.
I replaced the Lambda today.
Total performance seems to be improved, except for the hesitation at pick-up and rough idle when the engine is warm.
I suspect the idle control valve and temperature sensor.
The temp sensor seems to be under plug #1 (according to various 480 forums)
But where is the idle control valve and sensor?
Any info, advice and/or comments would be welcome.

Can you please check if your subframe is like the first or the second one:

I think that the subframe shown on the second image is for cars with automatic gearbox but i'm not sure.

I have a weird problem with my 92 Volvo 440 in that at random intervals, all my dashboard lights will reverse themselves. e.g the indicator lights stay on all the time, the dashboard illumination will stay off, the fog, full beam, rear heated window lights all stay on when they should be off. switching the devices on, causes the lights to turn off and vice versa..

Also when the indicator is ticking, the rev counter goes up and down in time to the indicator...odd

Anyway, this will happen for a few days before correcting itself, and then start happening again randomly.

All the indicators, full beam, etc etc physically work fine, it;s just the dashboard lights which are causing the grief!

Really hope someone can give me some pointers towards the cause of this. Would be much appreciated.

I recently had my car broken into and had my ignition disconnected, I don’t know if this has done any damage elsewhere in the electrical system but my dashboard is not lighting up and I am getting no heat from my heater, although the heater blower is working ok.
I don’t know if these problems are related but seem a bit of a coincidence that they have occurred at the same time.
To the best of my knowledge I have re-connected the wiring and the fuse is ok, I have also checked the dashboard dimmer control.

Not sure if this is related to the 'Interior Lights' post below but:

1994 1.8i 440, just bought it - no dashboard lights! The other switch lights are all fine, fuse is fine - just no illumination for the dials.

I've worked out how to get into the dash to replace the bulbs but, before I start that convoluted procedure, am I missing anything obvious (like a dash dimmer switch, a relay somewhere that's bust)

hi, guys. need a bit of advice. need to change rear brake pads on my 440 td si. can i use a g clamp, to push back the piston, to install the new pads, or do i free the bleed nipple first, [to let pressure off] i dont want to burst anything. [ this is my first volvo.

Bit of a problem with my M Reg Volvo 440 TDi, Brief history,

About 6 months ago Cam belt broke and wrecked the head, managed to find a new one that I had skimmed and the garage fitted it with no problems.

Then about 2 months ago Radiator sprang a leak I replaced it and apart from a very slow leak from where the Fan thermostat scews in all fine (will fix when weather warmer as I have to work in the street not fun at this time of year)

About 2 weeks ago driving into work the tem gauge went up as normal then did not stop went on up to horizontal (Norma is between 4 and 5 O clock ) then suddenly dropped back to normal. This happened a couple of times over next few days

I thought that it would be the thermostst sticking so took it into the garage fro them to replace it, they checked it and found it OK, but they noticed that there was alot of pressure building up in the coolant and suspected that the head Gasket had gone.

They did a "Chemical" test on the coolant and that came up negative, there is no water in the oil and no oil in the water. I am not convinced that their concerns are correct and that the head gasket is actually ok. Question is what else could be casusing the symtom of the pressureising of the coolant

I have a 440 GLT 1996 and it uses a lot of fuel, it also when idling will rev up and down and will at some point cut out. Do you have any ideas what might be causing this is it possible the lamba sensor has gone ?

On my 460 (B18K, 1.7 carb. engine), there is what is referred to in the Haynes guide as a vacuum accumulator set in the engine bulkhead near the vapour separator. It resembles a rubber diaphram with a connection for a pipe.

What is it for and what does the pipe connect to. I ask because mine does not have a pipe on anymore so presumably it's either fallen off or been taken off.

I've just bought a 1994 440. In the first week it wouldn't start. Would turn over but just not fire up. Called the automobile association - started staright away when they arrived. Embarassing. Stalled when I put it in reverse, stalled again when I put it into drive. Got moving but stalled at first set of lights.

Took it to the Volvo specialists - $400 later they said it was corroded fuel pump relay. The corrosion would allow a cold start, but not always a warm one.

Driving it home from mechanics; felt like it was about to stall as I coasted to a stop. It gave a big shudder and came good. Was told it was the transmission not changin as I stopped.

$250 later - transmission serviced. Next day sitting at the traffic lights - the was a lot of traffic so I'd been sitting there a couple of minutes when, an almighty shudder as if it was going to stall and then came right again.

Any ideas?

I have a 440 (1991 J reg) and the ignition lock has worn out. A determined RAC man managed to get the ignition key to turn but advised me not to switch off again! So I gave left the key in position I and disconnected the battery.

I gather from other posts on this forum that it is possible to replace the lock barrel but does anyone know how? The Haynes Manual is no help!

I have recently had my transmission rebuilt by Italians and they have not much clue when it comes to automatics. After being rebuilt it only goes up to third gear and I'm pretty sure that there were 4. My car is a 1994 460. Any thoughts that this may be a quick fix by a mechanic who might actually know about auto trans?

This probably sounds really stupid, but theres a leaver under my steering column, it looks like it should be for the bonnet or the boot but it isn't as far as i no it does nothing, can any one help?

I've got most of it off, it just seems like the door handle itself is holding the trim on and I cant wiggle it off.

i just picked up a spotless 1990 1.7i 440 glt with 80,000 on the clock,12 months mot and 6 months tax (not to mention 60litres of unleaded in the tank!) for 300 quid,faultless!!
or so i thought... after running it around for a few weeks it suddenly lost power under any load,hills etc,the obd gave a reading of 2-3-2 faulty or lack of signal from the oxygen sensor.
i've seen lots of parts shops online which have sensors at some pretty good prices but i'm not sure which one i need,does anyone know which models,engines etc were fitted with which sensor?
i'm not too bothered about it being a universal item,but i don't know how many wires it has coming from it? 1,2 or 3? i'm a long-distance driver so can't just pop out to check but i could really do with ordering one asap!
also,i've heard there could be a fuse somewhere in the dash that could be causing this problem too,(this would certainly be more favourable),would anyone be able to tell me where i might find it?

hello volvo owners everywhere.

after owning 2 white 240 estates (which i couldn't afford to run), and then a diesel renault (which was economic, but wasn't very comfortable), i really wanted to get my hands on a diesel volvo. i drove back from the auctions with a 96 460 1.9 TD that looks and drives lovely.

thing is: there's a loud whirring noise coming from somewhere. it becomes apparent at about 25 mph, and gradually rises in pitch according to the speed i'm travelling. no change if i declutch or change gears, so i thought it might be wheel bearings.

i took it to a garage for a service and told them about the noise, saying i thought it was wheel bearings or transmission. they serviced everyhting, took it out a few times and said: "ooh, it is a loud noise, probably wheel bearings or transmission, that'll be £100 please."

they did a thorough check on wheel bearings and pronounced them in good condition, no play anywhere. which leads me to think that its the gearbox/driveshaft or something like that.

anybody got any advice?

Hi there. I ve got a 1993 volvo 440 xi. Recently the alternator died and the battery ran flat. changed the alternator, now when i try an start it the alarm (didn t even know it had one..) goes off. Tried using the immobiliser key under the bonnet but it doesn t seem to work, as soon as I try and start it the alarm goes off again... any ideas?

i have just bought a 96 460 1.8i the tick over is lumpy ander 1000rpm and it stalls when coming to a stop ie traffic lights.

starts,drives ok but tick over is abought 700 rpm and lumpy.

any ideas would be welcome.

I've a 1996 460 with 110,000 miles on the clock. I hear horror stories of cambelts breaking and causing £100s of pounds worth of damage. How can I tell if mine needs to be changed and if so what is the likley cost. Thanks for your help!
