having a real problem with the starter motor on my volvo 440, have a haines manual but it seems to be missing out important steps as in how to get to it.

Ive removed the air filter thinking the starter motor was underneath, apart from not being able to see it, whats the best way to access it?

Seems my old 440 1.6 has finally bitten the dust. Just a query here.
It seems to have developed a bad coolant leak through what i thought was the oil sump on the belt side of the engine. It's only got 80 000 on the clock, was wondering what it would cost to fix, and more importantly, is it worth it, and how much will it cost? (bearing in mind i only payed £750 for it 2 years...

I need to remove the piece of trim in the passenger footwell that surrounds the bonnet release lever on my '95 440.
My intention was to replace a faulty central door locking control unit.
I cannot see how it is held in place?

The oil separator for the crankcase ventilation on my '95 440 B18U engine seems to be full of gunk!

Is there any way of removing it to clean it?

Hi , am new to Volvo but due to accident my front bumper on 96 1.8 440 is cracked. I have a good one on my old scrap 2.0 440. Is the bumper the same and is it an easy job to remove?

Also wish to fit a towbar for my trailer. Is this an easy job to do or is it best left to the pros?

wow ive had a 440 es for a few years now but just bought a 1996 440 es 1.8 , 1 owner from new.. never seen rain, no one has ever sat in it other than the driver.. metallic blue in colour..what a peach...BUT!!!!!! i have a few lil worries..

I need to get the dashboard/instrument panel out to change the bulbs.

But, how do I do it. I manage to get it out a bit, but then it won't come out any further, I can't even get my hand behind it to disconnect wires or anything.

How do I get it to putt out further so i can either totally remove it, or just change the bulbs?

Newbie here bit nervous - my 440 is going for its MOT next week - I have been told timing needs sorting but have had 2 totally different prices. They vary by 80 pounds and from what I can gather they are doing exactly the same - do I go with cheapest or with the engineer I know?

Hi all, I just bought a 1993 440 base model without central locking.
Everything works, just a slight problem when locking the driver's door. It takes up to a minute of delicate manipulation of the key to enable it to be turned in the locking direction. I've got a LH drive 460 with a carburettered B18K engine. On the bulkhead next to the cylindrical vapour separator is a large rubber grommet with a plastic cylindrical thing set in it. The grommet also takes the screen washer pipe through one side.

I have a new ( for me ) 1995 2L 480 ES.
When I bought it, there were problems with a very rough idle and pick up. Most of this was solved by fixing the ground wire on the MAP sensor.
After that the car acted the same way as a carburator engine where the vacuum hose on the distributor is disconnected: hesitation on pick up.

I have a weird problem with my 92 Volvo 440 in that at random intervals, all my dashboard lights will reverse themselves. e.g the indicator lights stay on all the time, the dashboard illumination will stay off, the fog, full beam, rear heated window lights all stay on when they should be off. switching the devices on, causes the lights to turn off and vice versa..

I recently had my car broken into and had my ignition disconnected, I don’t know if this has done any damage elsewhere in the electrical system but my dashboard is not lighting up and I am getting no heat from my heater, although the heater blower is working ok.
I don’t know if these problems are related but seem a bit of a coincidence that they have occurred at the same time.

I have a 440 GLT 1996 and it uses a lot of fuel, it also when idling will rev up and down and will at some point cut out. Do you have any ideas what might be causing this is it possible the lamba sensor has gone ?

On my 460 (B18K, 1.7 carb. engine), there is what is referred to in the Haynes guide as a vacuum accumulator set in the engine bulkhead near the vapour separator. It resembles a rubber diaphram with a connection for a pipe.

What is it for and what does the pipe connect to. I ask because mine does not have a pipe on anymore so presumably it's either fallen off or been taken off.

I have a 440 (1991 J reg) and the ignition lock has worn out. A determined RAC man managed to get the ignition key to turn but advised me not to switch off again! So I gave left the key in position I and disconnected the battery.

I have recently had my transmission rebuilt by Italians and they have not much clue when it comes to automatics. After being rebuilt it only goes up to third gear and I'm pretty sure that there were 4. My car is a 1994 460. Any thoughts that this may be a quick fix by a mechanic who might actually know about auto trans?

This probably sounds really stupid, but theres a leaver under my steering column, it looks like it should be for the bonnet or the boot but it isn't as far as i no it does nothing, can any one help?

I've got most of it off, it just seems like the door handle itself is holding the trim on and I cant wiggle it off.
