My new VOLVO V50(1.8) with almost 6500km (only) shows a ''problem'' (or, I do not know what...)
When I press the brake together with the clutch(to take the speed out), in order to stop to a traffic light(for example), sometimes the engine stops operating completely and I have to turn the key on(the starter) again from the beginning to make it start again.
It does not happen all the times, and I cannot relate it with something else...

Does anyone know why it is happening, or what can I do to fix it???

besides it being none practical and has been the dreariset car i have ever driven there have been a few faults in the past 6 months. there have been many, many rattles within the cockpit which have occured gradually so far; that should be a thing of the past especially with modern volvos, the steering column is faulty; it moves about all the time even when the "lock" is on, three times the steering has jammed; "assistance needed" came up on the information screen, I am getting the old 740 back on the road again and stick the v50 in the gutter.

I just picked up an 09 V50 wagon 2 days ago. One option I forgot to get was Sirius configured through the factory radio. I have a car receiver that I was going to install, but learned the dealer can integrate this seamlessly. However, after the sale the cost for this is $750! Hardly worth it since I have a suitable $40 unit. Does anyone know if it's possible to configure this on my own?

First off I will say my Names Sam. Im 15 years old. Pretty mad when it comes to cars Knowledge is limited but I know how an engine works and pretty handy when It comes to electronics.
Right now my Dads got a 4 year old Ford Mondeo ST220.
Two weeks ago he ordered a Volvo V50 R-Design with the T5 Manual Engine. Were having it in ICE White with Black leather. Also 18" Medusa Alloys that will be booked in for a refurb in Anthracite.
Quick question is the interior shows that the dash has numbers for a mobile phone and the steering wheel has buttons aswell. So does it come with bluetooth as standard. The reason I ask this is because my Dads company normally supplies him with a Bury phone kit but to have it fitted into the Volvo will cost in excess of a grand apparently so the company arent willing to do it. To be honest I don't believe it and I think its an excuse for them to pull out of fitting one. So does anyone know If it comes with bluetooth as standard?

hi, all, gonna pick up my 06 reg V50 1.8 from dealer tomorrow (independent one), and just receive a call from them saying the test suggest its pressure valve needs to be repaired. as the collection time was booked, i left with two option: they will get this fix which means i will have to wait another week. or i take the car to the volvo dealer on Monday, as it is cover under the warranty.
which option should i go for?

this will be my first Volvo ( fed up with BMW), any suggestion about the car please?

I'm looking at getting the Dice FM RDS Modulator for my 2005 v50 it look just what I need to get my iPod up and running as "the kit can connect to all cars that have standard European ISO AM/FM coaxial aerial connection"

My question is where's the aerial connection?

I have an 07 plate V50, lovely car. I have now bought a caravan for cheaper holidays with the kids. I bought an A1 towbar, which I fitted fine. I received with the tow bar, a standard wiring kit (for any car). I did a little research because I know there are bulb blown detectors etc on this car.
I decided to talk to my local Volvo dealer, and he advised I needed a wiring loom, and Trailer module. £71 inc VAT. I bought that, and a kind fitter printed off installation instructions. I followed the install to the letter. In summary, taped to the loom are two unused connectors, one is obviosly a power supply, the other is a signal connector. I plugged these into the trailer module, and the wire from the 7 pin caravan connector had to be assembled, then plugged in also. I have done all this, but there is no power to the outside socket at all. I obviously have been trying to do all this on a budget, and now Volvo want £100 to put it on their diagnostic machine.
Does anyone know if there is something I could have missed, or do these not work AT ALL without a software upgrade. I know there is a software upgrade to do something to the fog lamps (not entirely sure what this is about). The software upgrade is £30.
It does seem a little like volvo are saying unless you have this all installed by us, we wont let you use it!
I love the car, and this is really disappointing me.

Does anyone know if this fuel mix will work with the Diesel Engine in my Volvo V50 2.0d..?

Hi Folks, Noob here. And new to Volvos, but I an converted. I love this car. I have had it for a couple of months now and it has been terrific. We live in Colorado and we took a road trip up to Steamboat (about a 3-4 hour drive from Denver) and the car was so smooth and nice to drive.

Well, that's not why I was writing though. I have seen a few posts here and there that talk about folks hooking up there Ipods, but I have a Zune. I am trying to see if I can get a device that would hook up to the back of the factory stereo to produce a mini 3.5mm jack out front somewhere. I have heard a lot of people talk about the FM Transmitters and the Blue Tooth Option. But i must say, I was really hoping to find a way to physically tie into the unit. FM just sounds sketchy to me.

Any word of advice would be great! Thanks in advance! And if I see you out on the road, I'll give you a wave and say "hi".

I have a V50 D5 SE 07 model. It has an Ipod connector in the CD holder box and the manual states that when I plug this into the Ipod and select aux I should get an Ipod option but I don't, I only get 'AUX'. The ipod will play through the stereo in this mode but you can't see the playlist etc on the radio console and can't control the ipod via the stereo.
The manual also states the ipod should charge but it doesn't. The input is a 3.5mm jack and I have this connected to the bottom of the ipod via the normal ipod connector.
Any help gratefully received.

I own V50 2.0D and this is my first diesel. I'd like to know when to shift to be gentle to the engine and to save the fuel ?
I usually shift at about 2.200 - 2.500 RPM (so after shifted the RPM is about 1500). Is this OK or do I have to drive in higher RPM ?

We just received our V50 T5 AWD following an excellent factory delivery experience that included a driving tour to Oslo and Flam, Norway, the ferry across from Oslo to Denmark, driving to Copenhagen, then Stockholm, and finally back to Gothenburg.

We have the factory roof rails but no cross bars. Would like to get a medium sized roof box and need some advice. Are the factory roof rails supplied by Thule? Which box would folks recommend? Which cross bars would be needed to a) fit the rack and b) attach the box?

Hello, i have got recently my new Volvo V50, from day one the seatbelt warning tone is killing my nerves.
I was asking my Volvo dealer if there is a way to disable the tone, but he explained to me that this isnt possible as the belt is an important safety feature.

but latest today i cant live with this safety feature anymore.

i am living in Germany and today we had an outstanding nice weather with over 30°C, so i decided to go to a lake, the car was resting in the sun for approx 4 hrs,

as i was leaving i burned my shoulders because the seatbelt was very hot, so i am really hoping there is a way to disable the tone, otherwise i can only wear boring cloths in the future and no muscle shirts anymore

i heard that for some markets the seatbelt warning tone is disabled, so there must be a way to do it on my V50 as well.

eight years ago i was servicing SAAB cars here in Germany, where i was able to disable and enable every warning tone.

hope someone knows how to deal with this problem,

I picked up my brand new V50 this week, this is my first volvo and i have come to find that my lights automatically come on when i start the car up and i can not turn them off!!?? I have since noticed that many Volvo Drivers just seem to always have there lights on.

Is there something i can do to turn them off or do i need to take it into the dealership and get them to do something? If this is the case is i a 2 minute job and do they charge you for it?

Hi there my first post, I live in the UK Scotland, I received my lease car in May Volvo V50 D5 SE LUX.
I was amazed to find no spare, it comes with a tyre inflater kit. now it saves space but.
If I get a puncture I can put on the spare and get puncture fixed at kwik fit for nothing great!

Use the inflater and the tyre has to be binned and the foam and pipe to connect the kit that has to be changed after use. The cost 65 pounds for the foam and pipe add to that the tyre cost 100+ which means at least 165 pounds worse off.

I have to say I dont pay for tyres anyway as its included in the lease however if you are paying 165 ponds per puncture it could be expensive.

however volvo will supply the car with a spare as a no cost option but fail to indicate this anywhere that I could see (unless you ask)

Hats off to arnold clark the garage supplied me with a spare free of charge and I even got to keep the inflater

In case this is of any use to anyone I've just found out why I had 2" deep water in the rear passenger foot well.

First thought was that someone had spilt a drink. Second that it was related to the screen wash stopping working, see below. Third that it was due to leaking roof / bars. Turns out it was none of these and I've had to apologise to the family for ranting about having drinks in the back.

I've taken the carpets out to dry them. There was probably a gallon of water total soaked into the sound insulation under the carpet. Getting the carpet out required taking the drivers seat out as well as a fair amount of trim around the rear door etc. BTW I chose to not unplug the seat harness - I read in a technical bulletin that the yaw sensor is mounted on the seat and requires re-calibration if replaced - I'd prefer to avoid compounding the problems.

Cause appears to have been that the EEC drain had become detached from its hole in the bodywork. I found this under the carpet on the side of the centre console on drivers side (UK spec. car). To check that this was the problem I ran the ECC full. It's pretty surprising just how much water goes through this drain, probably of the order of 2cc / minute. The hose has a rubber grommet at the end which is meant to hold it into the hole, but neither this or the extra bit of tape that was there appeared to be working. The drain had been discharging water into the front carpet and from here right through to the back of the car. Incidentally the carpets appear to have a waterproof membrane between the carpet side and the insulation layer. This was why the water had not been seen in the front before the puddle in the back got to be big enough for goldfish.

Anyway, with the carpets almost dry I'm off to put everything back together...

I now have three more problems to fix, in case anyone has any advice:

The windscreen washer has stopped working. Tank is full, pump makes the right noises but nothing comes out on either the windscreen or tailgate. I've tried taking the hosing apart at the joints under the bonnet, the nozzles are not blocked and no water makes it to the joint. Any ideas?

My horn has stopped working. Haven't yet tried the alarm to see whether it is the sounder, but pressing the steering wheel has no effect. Again, any ideas?

The final one sounds expensive... Every so often when I try to start the car the starter motor fails to engage and just spins. Sometimes when starting normally it gives a little chirp just as the engine catches. I suspect that I've got a damaged flywheel with at least a tooth missing. Can anyone think of any other cause?

Inspite of all this I still think that my 2004 V50 T5 is a great car.

I searched this site on how to replace our cabin air filter. Wish I would have done it long ago. I can tell immediate results.
Also we had an issue with the oil pan. The Wife hit a rock in the road and cracked the plastic cover and then it cracked the oil pan. I was surprised to see others had similar happenings with the oil pan.
After 3 years and 90,000 miles the wife loves the v50. No big problems. A couple of issues here and there. I want to look at the VW Sportwagon but she likes her volvo that much. She is disappointed to hear from our local dealer that the v50 is no longer being made at least for the US. Thanks all for your help, these forums are a great resource. Adam.

Having thought long and hard about my next car (current car is a seat ibiza 130bhp tdi and previous car was a 3 series BMW) I have more or less decided on a v50. The room seems big enough for an average size dog, golf clubs plus I am building a kit car to hill climb. I would quite like a 2.0d SE Euro 4 and due to price will prob be a 05 or 06 plate with no more than 30k on it. What are the common faults and issues I should look out for?

1st post

I was wondering what can be adjusted on the front end with regard to the alignment?

My wife went in for a regular service and needed to get the alignment checked (it's been a while and the car pulls a tad). The $tealer said that the RF strut was bent and needed to be replaced prior to doing the alignment. However, I put the car on a jack to look things over, and it doesn't look like the strut is bent, nor does it look like camber or caster is adjustable on the front end - just toe.

(side story: I've owned BMWs for years and take them to road racing tracks regularly. I think I've done 6 or 8 complete suspension jobs on various cars that have been in the family over the years.)

The concern I have is that I'm going to get charged for a $170 strut when I don't really need it and the only thing that can be adjusted is toe anyway.

BTW, does anybody know what the alignment specs are?

Hi, i just got a towbar fitted but the electrics needs a 15amp special fuse i think, its the same size as the horn 20 fuse. i tried many garages today but couldnt get one. any ideas? cheers

I HAVE A BRAND-NEW VOLVO V50.
IS IT NORMAL FOR WATER DROPS TO ENTER THE SUNROOF?
THE WATER DROPS DO NOT ENTER THE CABIN, BUT THEY ARE COLLECTED FROM THE PLASTIC COLLECTOR (OR SO-CALLED) PLACED BELOW THE SUNROOF AND FROM THERE THEY GO OUT OF THE CAR FROM THE DRAINS??
IS THIS PROPER??

THIS OFF-COURSE HAPPENS WHEN IT RAINS AND I HAVE EITHER SOME HUMIDITY OR EVEN A FEW DROPS, DEPENDING ON THE RAIN INTENSITY.

SHOULD THE SUNROOF (WHEN CLOSED OFF-COURSE) BE 100% WATER PROOF??

I own a 2006 V50. Our outside tailgate window washing nozzle was taken, and we obtained a new part. How do I remove the inside plastic panel to access the window washer hose, and install the new nozzle?

Newbie to the forum and to Volvo's. I've bought a 2005 v50 2.0D, and on the whole the car is nice, but when I corner I get a knocking noise in the drivers seat. The unofficial Volvo garage I use tightened all the bolts on the seat, and think the issue is internal. I just wondered if anybody else had seen this type of behaviour? the seats are leather, with heating in them

i'm about to buy a new volvo v50, and i'm a bit confused of which type and color of interior to select.
Generally, i prefer the bright interior but i dont know how dirty it becomes and how irreversible this might be, specially now that we are expecting our second baby to come in life. Would the leather seats save this situation or should i just go for the dark interior?

I'm between the following options, and i wanted you to state your opinion end experience

1. Dalaro (Dalatech) quartz in dark beige interior
2. Leather calcite in dark beige interior

I'm told that the V50s are very hard on front wheel bearings.
The dealer has a listing of "3" part numbers for a 2006 diesel model alone which would suggest that they are a problem.
Has anybody had this issue and replaced the bearings themselves or has it been a main dealer only job?

Just sharing my tire purchase with the forum...

I recently put on some new tires on my T5 V50 with the 17" wheels that come on the sport package.

Needless to say, the Michelins that came stock with the car were terrible (road noise, cupping even though I had them rotated often, harsh compound...), so I was determined to spend a bit of time looking for a better tire.

I was tired of hearing our Southern California freeways under the wheels, so I opted to go to a slightly larger tire at 215/50R-17 (Note stock is 205/50R-17) to help with the road noise and give a slightly wider tread. New sized tires fit fine within the wheel well and look great on the car.

After much research, I ended up with the Goodyear F1 Eagle All Season tires which here in SoCal, I purchased the set, mounted and balanced +tax from Discount Tire for about $840 USD. Here is a link to Tirerack which between discount tire and tire rack, gives plenty of reviews to support the tire.

So far, have put about 500mi. on the tires and am very happy with them. At freeway speeds (and higher), the car is very stable and tracks well in the lanes. No drifting side-to-side in the anti hydroplane grooves. Cornering is solid as well. Since it has not rained yet, I cannot say how they will do yet, but based on the reviews, I am not concerned.

Hope this has helped for anyone looking at new tires these days.

I am considering buying a 2005 V50 with just under 39k miles. The dealer has offered to certify it for an additional $1300. This will extend the factory 4 yr/50k mile warranty to 6 yr/100k miles. The origianl warranty will be up in May '09. If I pay to certify it, the warranty will be until May 2011 or 100k miles. What are your opinions? What about options for purchasing an extended warranty when the original expires? Thanks a lot!

I am considering purchasing a used V50. All the ones I have seen have roof rails on them. I prefer a cleaner look without them and was wondering if anyone has removed them before.

The pollen filter on my 2004 2.4 V50 was replaced in a recent service and to access it the electrical connectors (behind the dash on passenger side) need to be disconnected. When I picked it up I got an alarm error, air bag service warning, the sunroof, front fogs and rain sensor wouldn't work. The reason is poor quality electrical connectors. I disconnected them all, used contact spray and reconnected everything and all the faults disappeared . This is a known problem with the V50.

I have known other faults such as wipers not turning off.

hi, i'm new volvos, but am looking to buy a 2005 V50 2.4. i drove a V50 in europe last year, the diesel version, and i liked that...

from what i can tell from the pics and description it has the sports package, the climate package and premium audio, too. looks like it's in great shape, but it does have 70k miles.

it just had a recent service (70k?, i'm not sure). there is a 100k transferrable warranty on the engine/trans.

so my really general question is:

anything to watch out for with the 2005's?

any problem with this engine going to 200k???

how is the sports package?

what's the next major service, and what does that entail?

any opinions on your '05 would be great.

I'm new to Volvo. I have couple of offers for old Volvos V50/V70. My question is: what is reasonable limit on mileage. I want a car that would work for me for couple of years without any big issues - of course one never knows what may come in future, but I believe there's some general advise. What is average lifetime of the Volvo? I mean car of the clever user, not exhausted car with regular maintenance? Would it be clever to buy a Volvo that has more then 100.000km/60.000miles? What about 150.000km/100.000miles?

So... I put in an order for a brand new V50 1.6D (MY09) with loads of funky extras...
This is my first new car. My first Volvo. and I can't wait.

Following the status on Volvo's pages the V50 has now been finally put into their system.
Expected delivery is week 28.
Since it's now week 24 and they haven't even started building it I'm getting worried that they won't make it in time.

Does anyone know how long the production time is once they start on the build process?

Picked up my used 2004 V50 yesterday - a 2.0 D SE. Very pleased with it until on the way home at speeds over 40/50 mph theres a buzzing/humming/vibration type noise from the rar of the car.

Seems to be speed related rather than engine speed as it was in all gears etc.

Could it be exhaust blowing or wheel bearings? its got a FSH and has 73000 miles under its belt.

My neighbor has just bought a 2004 s40 with front end damaged and he found a 2005 v50 with roof damage.

He wants to know if the front ends are the same.

He has to bid on the parts car without being able to see it in person hence my question.

Just joined, '07 V 50, will not start, getting message that Immboilizer error, when I turn the key voltage drops and light go out, after a short time voltage comes back.

I have a 2005 V50 and my 3 year 35000 mile maintenance package just expired in February. I just today took the car in for the 38000 mile scheduled maintenance as the car was telling me it was time to go in. The car was just inspected in February and passed without issue. I just found out that the 38000 mile scheduled maintenance is a $430 charge. Not sure what they are all doing. The mumbled something about a break system flush or something or other.

I took the car in this morning and I just got a call from the Volvo dealership. They said that their tech had found that my rear break pads were completely worn and they need to be replaced immediately. Apparently the front breaks are fine. I know the car has a rear break bias but enough to cause the rear break pads to go so far ahead of the front break pads and at less then 40k miles? Something doesn't seem right to me. It's another $200 charge tacked on. If the break pads are so bad off how could they have not seen this at the inspection less then 2 months ago?

Then they proceed to tell me that my tires need to be replaced and that they could do all the work today for a little over $1500. Does it sound like I'm being taken for a ride here? It sure does to me. No way would I have them do the tires but they are telling me it's not safe to drive the car with the rear break pads like that so I told them to go ahead and replace them.

Anyone else had similar issues with rear break pads wearing so fast?

It is clear in V70 owner manual, where is fuse for ABS and STC/DSTC system, but I cant find DSTC fuse in V50 owner manual... (here)

I am a new member from Athens Greece, and I currently consider buying a new V50 (MY08). As you may know, in Europe there is a vast choice of petrol engines for the V50 (1.6 (100hp), 1.8 (125 hp), 2.0 (145 hp), 2.4 (170 hp), T5 and T5 awd). Naturally, the price range is also vast. In Greece no Volvo diesels are imported and the most "popular" engine version is the 1.8 one. Also, the only version you can test drive.

Since I cannot go for the T5 version, but test drove the 1.8 that seemed to struggle for a bit more torque and power (especially if the car is loaded I guess), I would like to know from other members that may have drove both, how the 2.0 engine compares to the 1.8 in terms of performance? Do they use the same gear ratios? Theoretically there is a 1sec difference in acceleration and a 10km/h more of top speed for the 2.0 model. But at the end of the day, does it worth the extra money (and extra taxes you have to pay) for getting a more adequate performance for the weight of the car? Volvo dealers say no, too little difference in performance for the money you pay (2000 Eur more for purchase, plus 200 Eur more annual taxes for the 2.0 with respect to the 1.8).

Purchased a brand new 08 plate v50 1.6 diesel, when returning home, got out of the car to take a general look around it to then find quite a noticable ding on the pasenger side rear wheel arch which wasn't there when viewing the car first time. Didn't think to look around the car today during picking it up because obviously you don't expect that. So it's got to go back to get repaired, also, when activating the window washers the washers for the lights are not rising up like they should or am I forgetting something?
