I'm looking for instructions on how to dismantle my Speedo so i can see if it is the gear that has stripped, if it is the gear I'm told it is a 25 tooth one, does anyone know for sure?. I have tried a couple of sites for gears but haven't had any success so far for 740 Series Odometer/Tripmeter parts.

We have a 1989 740T and apparently the crankshaft pulley is falling off. I inspected it and it doesnt look like it just bolts back on. I have 2 questions. What would cause this to happen and can it easily be reattached? Just you opinion please.

My daily driver '89 Volvo 740 when it gets superhot outside or gets to near half a tank of gas or below
it will sputter around corners and start missing at speed and eventually die out and will not start for a few hours.

Well, I bought the right belt, found the right tools, and now my neighbor and I can't for the life of us figure out how to get this puppy on the pulleys, and then tightened down. He loosened the bolts that appear to be the ones that would allow the tension to loosen so we could slip the belt on, but couldn't get anything to budge at all. I own a 88 760 sedan turbo. 180,000 miles. it runs good. i have 1 major problem that i cant solve. there is a intermittent knocking coming from the car when the motor idles in neutral or in gear, but under load it goes away. it gets super loud and is embarrasing.

I have thought all along that it might be the lower end, but it didnt make sence that it ran so good and was dependable.

I have been offered a good condition aw71 to replace my tired standard non turbo box for my 2.3 740gle? Does anyone know if it will fit right in?

Also if anyone is selling a box for one in nz please let me know!

i have had this problem for a couple weeks it. started stalling out and restarting ok(sometimes after awhile) then it stopped starting. replaced the coil, module, speed sensor, throttle control sensor, commputer, plugs, plug wires, dist cap, fuel filter, fuel pump have all been replaced at one time i was getting a spark from plugs and no fuel then at other times no spark and fuel.

Hi, I just got this 740 (non-turbo sedan) and it runs really well. However, one thing I am not used to is the way it starts. The car starts up fine, but it just stays at a low idle speed, and therefore is somewhat rough at idle. I give the car gas and get the RPM's around 2k and it is very smooth, but I have to do that manually.

I am new to this forum today, i have owned my 740 for 10 years now, the old girl as never let me down.

Currently I am getting a rumbling noise from the prop shaft area, does anybody have any advice whether it is the prop itself or the coupling ? Is there a way to test the prop ? When I accelerate hard on the auto box the noise goes !

Just out of curiosity -- my otherwise great looking 89 looks like it's trashed because of the headliner. It has fallen down completely, and from talking to other owners, this seems to be a very common problem with 80s Volvos. Is that your experience?

I haven't gotten around to getting a new one installed (for somewhere around $350) yet but plan to do so when I take a day...

I'm sure this is common, especially in the old tank-like volvos, but how do you fix the (really) annoying squeak/rattle/whistle the air vents make? Even when the heat/AC isn't on it rattles, and the only way to fix it is to bang on the dashboard. Can I pop off the air vent and see if any loose plastic/whatever is in the housing, or is it the fan itself and difficult to repair?

Then i was on my way to school and it sounded like i hit a milk crate and it was stuck under my car, then really loud clunking noise, so we took the driveshaft off and the boot was ripped...

I think this may be related to the power steering pump, but before I make the purchase of a new one it would be good to get some expert ideas. 1990 740gl, 305,000 - belts replaced about 5,000 miles ago. Now, upon starting there is a horrible ear-piercing screech from front, occasionally a less shrill noise when down-shifting. The noise disappears within a minute or two....

Because you enventually replace every part in the car due to it failing. Particulary plastic parts like light lenses and such.

Its totally overhauled @ 300,000.

Can someone please explain to me what this is? How does it work? The reason I am asking what triggers it (whatever it is) is because before I got my gas gauge fixed I was guesstimating the gas in the tank. One day the car would not shift out of first gear while driving. In neutral I could give it gas and the engine would rev up but in drive it would buck and not shift out of first...

Greetings all, am having problems with my 1990 740T alarm. I just replaced the ignition switch (not the ignition lock or steering lock) but now the lights blink on and off whenever I open my car. In fact, the lights continue to blink even when I drive it. For some reason, turning on the headlights stops the blinking while driving. I think the P.O. sort of disconnected the aftermarket (?)...

The fuel gauge reads 'zero' on my 85 Volvo 740 wagon, and the temperature gauge reading is very low, so I am looking for the 'instrument cluster voltage stabilizer'. Does anyone know exactly where that is? I pulled the instrument cluster and could not find it. A detailed description on the component would be helpful, or a picture, or info on how to repair the circuit.
