The ignition on '91 760 is stuck and I can't turn the key to remove the ignition. Metal parts have come out the key-hole, so I'm pretty sure it's a gonner.

I've managed to locate a complete steering column with ignition, door/trunk locks, and keys for a whopping $75 so worst case I can pull the entire column and replace it. However, I'd like to save that as a last resort if anyone has some tips on pulling the ignition out when the key won't turn. Or would drilling it out still be easier than pulling the entire column? Thanks for any advice.

1989 740 Turbo
My brakes are seizing on the front rotors after they have been used frequently in traffic epecially in warmer weather. They are girling w/ABS. When cooled off they return to normal and the calipers seem to release normally. Is it time to change calipers? Is there a proportioning valve on this model and if so where is it lcated. I would like to repair this as efficiently as possible without changeing everything needlessly. Any sugggestions as to what is causing this? Thanks.

I'm looking for a good supplier of interior and exterior parts as my 88 760 turbo has a low hanging headliner and faded and cracked light lenses.I've had great help from my dealer in Miami by phone and UPS. so far.Any better ideas?

My 86 - 760 Turbo automatic transmission goes about 5 miles before it eventually shifts into the last gear. This just started in the past few weeks. Once it does shift it seems fine. Fluid level is ok. Tranny put in a year ago, used with only 100,000kms. Has worked great.

Love my new 89 764 - but would love to have a manual. I am not even sure how to operate the H/AC .

Any ideas?

I have the two part radio/cassette system. It will intermittently and with no rhyme or reason shut off. It doesn't lose power, because I don't have to reload the code after each episode. I am looking for a wiring diagram for this thing. Any help out there?

It looks pretty clean - but the dash looks really odd to me - especially the radio area (I am used to 740/940's). I know that it has had a new AM/FM/CD put in - but has the job been botched? I asked about the screws on the side, and was told that was where a mount for a mobile phone was.

Waht do you think. AM I doing OK for 3K? It has 109K on it.

I am having problems with my 760 w/ a Garrett turbo.

At 55 on faily level road all is pretty smooth - turbo gauge stays put at about 1/4.

Push it a bit harder going around traffic or up a hill, and turbo kicks in - good punch - but then will drop out, just for sec, and then pick back up. At other times when you push it, it will speed up - like with extra boost - then back to normal boost.

Cruise at 70-75 with cruise on and turbo will engage erratically like someone who would pump the gas - then let off. Then it may go for a spell just as smooth as can be.

I hope someone has some ideas. I just spent over 500.00 at the shop. This was the one thing that he has not figured out yet.

hello everyone, let me first say i am glad i found this site. I have a 85" 740 non-turbo. I was running like a top. One morning i got in it, it started fine as always. Put it in gear. It seems to have jerked a little and died. It has not started since.Please help if you can

I recently purchased a 1990 Volvo 760 Turbo. A very nice car (Tank) I might add.

However I am having problems with the Driver Side power seat. The motor seems to still work as it will still recline. For some reason though it will not move the seat front/back. I can feel the motor trying to move it but it wont. Is there a way for me to manually move the seat forward or back without replacing the motor? Also is it normal to pay $300 for the part to fix this?

Have `86 740 GLE with `Lambda sonde`, and car will start very badly in the cold morning. Once running and getting warmer, all ok. Anybody can tell me where to look for? thanks.
And still looking for secondhand gearbox as-according the mechanic-the wrong lubrificant was used once and now a bearing is damaged with result a rattling noise when driving...

Stainless steel ...? from the factory, that is. I have an 89 764.

I had been told that the first downpipe from the motor was - but I was wondering if some had more.

The reason I ask is that in looking at the Starla replacement exhaust parts on FCP Groton - there are not that many parts listed - leading me to think that there may be more parts that are stainless - therefore needing no replacement.

Im in the UK Got a 740 GLE 2.3 Estate <-bought it cheap [they are ! ] My dad used to have Volvo`s <-so started from a early age ! it was a 144 GL I have had a few 240`s <-hit a tree at 30mph once [ fell asleep at wheel <-woke up qwick ! ] and walked away from the accident ! Anyway bought this 89 740 its got the leather and the heated seats <-that work ! its done 120000 miles [just run in ! ] but it rolls,and there is a few clunks from front end <-i suspect control arm bushes ? U get a clunk on full lock going backwards [ its auto box ] Also the rear end is sagging [no not my ex wife ! ] So i`m going to renew the coils and shocks Apart from that its ok <-for its age Engine wise its solid One other thing [ive read a few things on this ] is tyre size <-ive got on there 185 65 15 <-which do look a bit small i read that 195 65 15`s are better and are for the estates
Would it [apart from looks ] make a lot of differance to the handling of the vehicle ! or not ? Right thats about it I look forward to reading a few topic`s in here Be here again soon

I am looking for more info. Apparently there are 2 different types out there. Does anyone know how to distinguish which one I need. Any cheap solutions out there?

I've gotten into the column,easily released the Ign. switch but need to get into key cylinder,can anyone give me a pointer.Its in a tow yard and they all want to slidehammer it! Toss me a biscuit!! My 89 740 turbo is having idle speed problems and is failing hydro carbon test required in this part of BC CA. I have checked and changed several items but it still is there. ??? Does the EGR valve affect the idle speed??? Car passed all other tests and is running well but my ability to get any idle speed adjustment = zero. It is idling at 750rpm as it should but whenever I come to a stop it dives to 500rpm before recovery. Any suggestions? Any help would be really appreciated.

Look forward to talking with you guys. I'm a lonnnnnnnng time volvo freak. Since 1961. Have had a few but rerally am satisfied with this one except for this nuisance problem.

i have a 1989 760 that the lock assy has locked up i have the new lock but it has to be in the 1 pos for the release to go in on the lock so how do i get my old one out,also in 89 they changed the assy so this is not the one that the assy sticks off the side of the column it is part of the column.What do i do?

This will probably seem like a stupid question to any of you who are technically minded but I can't find the answer anywhere.

On my 1989 Volvo 740 2 litre saloon, I was doing my usual check on the engine and decided to look a little farther than the usual fluids check and looked at the air filter. It was then I noticed there was a hose coming out of the left of the airbox (when looking at the engine from the front) this goes under the engine block and then does not connect to anything, is this normal? if not where should it connect to?

I have the Haynes manual which gives me no hints. Also am I right in assuming that my engine type will be a B200?

symptoms:

really uneven idle - shakes car
revs drop to near stall after cold start until warm, then rough
idle datum eratic between 800-1200 (settled not fluctuating)
sounds really throaty - like deisel
worst in low pressure, damp weather
v occasional pre ignition

checked:

crypton diagnostic fine
plugs
leads
dist+rotor
head gasket
exhaust
ignitors
compressions
valves

is my car dead or is there a sneaky piece i haven't found?

one strange thing - can't stop eng by blocking air intake!

any ideas before i ditch it?

I need lots of parts....and most of the scrap yards near me are way to proud of their parts....
I need:
Driver's door power window regulator...without motor.
Driver's side back door exerior molding.
Mini light bulbs.
Chrome strip on front bumper.
Driver's side park/turn lamp.
Tail light assemblies.


That's all I can think of.....right now.

HOW CAN I ALIGN MY HEADLIGHTS VERTICALLY AND HORIZONTALLY IN
PROPER PARAMETERS? ANY TOOLS TO BUY OR USE A WALL - MEASUREMENTS?

I am working on replacing the mini bulbs in and around the dash of my 89 760 and went to the "stealer" today to get the ones that are mounted in the plastic holder....OH MY GOSH!!! $12 each...that is highway robbery.....is there any other place to get these bulbs?

hi folks i am in bradford west yorks u.k.just had a 240 2,3 auto.real motor.written off.two weeks so now getting 740 2.3 auto estate. i realy can only see minor body diferences.how did 240 still sell when new 740 out i just wonder why.ta dan

I am new to the board and just bought an 89 760 Turbo....got it cheap...but needs lots of work...so Iwill probably be posting here allot...if this is the best place to get answers...

My 1st question is:

Both power seats do not work...nothing happens at all, seems kinda strange for them both to be out......is there a relay or something that could be killing power to both seats? I have already checked the re-settable circuit breaker and it is fine...

The heated rear window (defogger) on my 1988 Volvo 740GL Saloon has stopped working. There are 12 volts at the connection on the window (just by the left hand rear seat belt anchor point) and the earth at the other side is OK. I have measured the resistance of the window with the 12v and earth wires attached and it is around 10k ohm but without the wires attached it is around 100k ohm. These values are far too high to let any useful current pass. There is also a high resistance between the 12v or earth connectors and the vehicle body. There are no cut outs or timers in the circuit. I guess the window has had. Has any one else had this problem or know why it should have happened. It will be too expensive to replace the window so I was thinking of fitting a 150/200watt heater to blow on the rear window. Has anyone any views on this fix.

I have an 85 volvo 740 gl sedan , its a kid car and I do not want to spend a lot of money fixing it up. It runs great but the check engine and error lights are on. How do I induce the error codes and where is there a list of error codes with resolutions ?

Hi there I live in NZ and have just bought a volvo 760 GLE V6 and the when I press the brake pedal more than just the brake light iluminates in the rear like a power surge or something. There is also the ABS light on the dash wont go out Ive had the ABS tested and its working fine. Also the fuel gauge does'nt work. Could this all be related to the earth?

I have a 91 740 that decided not to start yesterday. This was after
sitting for 2 days and a very frosty night. It started off by running
for 5 seconds roughly and after that just turns over with little
hints of trying to sputter and run.

It was also parked differently than usual with 2 wheels up on the
curb which raised the left side of the car higher than the right, not
sure if that is a factor....it is back on level ground now.

This is 1 day later and I actually got it to run again for about 10
seconds and as soon as I hit the throttle it stopped. I may have been
pumping it too much today as I now smell fuel when I try to start. It
is fuel injected and I'm not sure if it can be prone to flooding such
as a carburated version would be. If I wait an hour or so it sounds
promising at first then simply goes back to just turning over
again....any thoughts out there?

Hi there, I have just signe up.......It looks like Ive become a Volvo man by default..starrtet off with a 480T about 10 years ago and have never looked back. Currently have an S80 T6 (Wonderful), a 480T still (Shabby inside but still a rocket, driven by my son rather than anything else!) and a 760 GLE Estate that I bought on eBay in a moment of weakness but have been pleassantly suprised.

Now returning to the 760 (V6 engine 165k miles) all electics are fine but engine suffering a little from tappet noise, how easy are these to adjust? any one any suggestions as to how easy this might be?

I am the owner of a 740 break, 1988 and need a replacement gearbox, I have been told. There is always this tick, tick noise when driving and gettıng slowly worse. Technician mentioned a faulty bearing in the gearbox.
I am living in Greece and this car has never been on the local market here.
I am now lookıng for a second hand set from abroad. İ am still driving it ınin the noisy way.
Anybody can comment on this and/or help? Thanks.

I am just about to own another 740 estate, which is in good running order, but the previous owners children have very kindly removed the headlining in the back section of the estate.

I am a very practical person, and am looking for low cost ideas how to make it presentable again. The foam is still there but the thin fabric is missing.

Would the headlining from another Volvo model fit.

Sorry new to this, so I hope I am doing it right.

I have recently bought a 1989 Volvo 740 saloon (UK F plate).

I am just having 1 maddening problem with it. The seatbelt warning light constantly flashes when I have someone in the passenger seat (whether they have a seatbelt on or not). It is a fast flash which then goes in time with the indicators when they are on.

So, finally, my question. Is there a way to either a)fix this fault or b)disable the warning light.

My name is Sean and I live in Alberta. I thought I was doing the right thing by buying my wifw a solid 740 waggon. I test drove the car and everything seemed fine. I did not have the car checked out by a mechanic, fact I bought the car at night and got duped, or so it seems.
Since purchasing my fine car I have spent over $2000. bucks just getting it to work. I'm frusterated and here to get information to keep this beast on the road.

Can anyone tell me where I would find the fuel filter for my 740 (85) waggon?

I ordered the hose from Canadian Tire ($15) instead of the $40 option from the dealer and Import auto parts. The CT hose fit prefectly although this wasn't 100% confirmed until I had the old one off.
The procedure was relatively straightforward:
-release upper clamp, pull off hose and direct the stream of anitfreeze down into a clean plastic garbage can cover shoved under the car.
-release the lower clamp (with some difficulty) using a short rachet.
-slice the hose from above with a sharp utility knife and twist a slot screwdriver in the cut to free the hose from the rad connection. I read somewhere to watch out when you try to free the hose at the rad nozzle in case it's weak with corrosion - you could damage the rad connection - good advice. Cutting it off worked.
-Then immersed the new hose's ends in boiling hot water to soften it, slid on clamps and fitted it to the rad and water pump.
-Tighten clamps, refill the rad through the expansion tank with the antifreeze drained earlier, crank it up and check for leaks.
Now check the upper hose and ask yourself why you didn't change it at the same time???

Problem that I am experiencing is my idle goes really high and down. What could be the cause. I've check all tha vacuum hoses and they are all connected.
