Hey one and all,
I just recently replaced spark plugs and cables on my 740 GL and now it idles very heavy as if one of the spark plugs isn't firing. I once encountered this symptom when and plug wire came off. I checked all of them to be sure and all seem on. What is causing this? Can anyone help. I'm a novice to the do it yourself thing and I'm stumped. Any input would be much appreciated.

hi i have a 760 gle 2.8 v6 when the gearbox is cold it will not change up to 4th gear until i have driven about 15 miles and the gearbox is warmed up then it changes up and down the gears ok could anyone please help

Hi just got my 740 2.3 GL estate as i was told they are realy great towing cars. Anyway as we are keen caravaners and our ( ford scorpio 2l

)Has not realy got the grunt to pull 1300kg of caravan.the ford scorpio is a 1996 model.But the 740 is a 1990 model and i know im going back in years but i feel i have got a much more better car.A workhorse plus comfort.

Im hoping to get loads of advise and also have a chat with others world wide.This does seem to be a good site but then only time will tell as im new to the site.

Hello all,
I'm an aspiring do it your selfer and was wondering if I could get some guidance. What tools are required? What spark plugs? What wires? Etc. My car is a 1990 740 gl in much need of a tune up. I've read various horror stories about overtorqued spark plugs and such and I don't want to use the wrong stuff. Do I really need a torque wrench?

I just bought a 740, my first volvo. I've lots of good things about the brand and am looking forward to many problem free miles. I was wondering if anyone has any tips for keeping my 740 runnin another 100000 miles?

Hello "colleagues". I am driving Volvo 760 turbodiesel for a few years,a I have notice that it spent too much synthetic oil and it is not so "strong" with it.Visually,it doesn`t fit for the old engines,so my question is following...is there any one of you who really now what is the original or the best type of oil for the "old" turbo diesel engines.

Dont know where to start looking. Idle running at 2000rpm all the time. After a run at higher revs on retard they drop to 1000 for a short time. Thankful it is an auto box or I would be fender bending!

howdy from the Keys,Would someone know the tank capacity on a 89 760 TurboWagon? Also I'm getting a fuel smell and it looks wet around the Sender nut.The fuel level from 1/2 tank seems to drop too quick.I'll get a new nut and seal before I pull up the Inspection cover! Thanks! JD

I have a light that is intermittently coming on and off during driving and at crank up. My wife said she thinks its a lightbulb with a slash through it. Anyone have any ideas what it is and what it means?

the dashboard warning lights (ignition, parking brake, oil and screenwash) all stay on when the engine is running in my 1987 volvo 740gle. Belts, oil and coolant levels and screenwasher levels are all ok. could it be a bad eart or connection fault

ok my volvo has no driving lights but still has a switch in the dash for them. are the wires or harness at the light locatin pre wired to accept lights or do i have to run new wires and stuff?

Heres the deal, looking for direction from all you volvo lovers , except for the ones in singapore, seems they have some bad chi going on. I have a 91 740 turbo wagon, of coarse I love it, which could be a bad thing. Never get emotionally invovled with you car. Red has 146453 miles and is burning a little oil, ok maybe a little more than a little, alright 1 qt per tank of gas. BUt very little blue smoke, can you beleive it. checked cylinder leakage ,cyl 1 50% cyl 2 20% cyl 3 20% cyl 4 30%. A rebuild installed woluld be a $3000.00 investment give or take. Looking for a used engine . Thinking someone has one sitting in there garage. Maybe not .

whenever i get on the gas (past 3000RPM) i get that good old carbon smell like winding up your grandmas old 350 chev. any ideas on what that might be...i know usually it happens the first time then goes away but i can get my engine to do this several times a week and i don't drive like a grandma!....thanks again for your help...dan

so does the turbo on my volvo need exhaust backpressure to work right, how much can i free up my exhaust? also if i pull my injectors to put in new seals is there any way i can clean them?

i think i will justwrite a small essay of questions for you...ha,ha, so what is the black knob under/connected to my throttle body for?...also how does one set air/fuel? do they sell a meter od some sort?

while checking out my car i decided to check vacuum. i tested 17 inches of manifld vac at a couple of ports, but at the port for the vacuum line that goes to the "T" for pcv i am only getting 10 inches. i cleaned both connections out and replaced the line to no avail. can these intakes and throttle bodies get that dirty inside? also how much vacuum should i be getting. i was planning in changing the intake man gasket anyway so now i will probaly spend some time cleaning the intake, T.B., and idle motor.

There's this guy with a 1986 740 Turbo. I have a 93 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with 300 hp and 340 ft/lbs of torque that does 0-60 in around 5.5 seconds. How much work would it take to make the Volvo run with/beat me?

I have a 1989 740 turbo wagon, and it has some trouble starting up in the morning (just like it's dad). Generally I have to crank it over for a while before it does start, and when it does, it will rev up and down (between the fast idle speed and 200 RPM) In my honda, this problem would be very similar to air bubbles in the coolant system. Many times when the engine speed drops, the car will stall. It starts right back up, and it only stalls when the car is cold. After warming up, the car generally idles roughly. Now, this may be a combination of problems, but I have checked the distributor, and replaced the plugs and plug wires. I'm not sure if this car has an IAC valve, and thus am not sure if that could be a problem. Any help in the matter would be most welcome.

Please would someone tell me where I can find the fuel pump relay switch in my newly purchased 1990 740 GL. We have problems with it stalling, and have been advised to change the relay. That is the most likely cause of the problem. However, I have been searching for the relay the past two hours. All I have for help and guidance is a copy of the Chilton repair manual for Volvos, 90 through 98, all models. Not much specific information on any one particular model, namely the 740 GL. Thanks

heres the deal , i have a 1990 760 turbo wagon with a b230f motor and a jetronic system . when the car runs it runs great, but no matter what speed you are driving it will cut off and not come back on until the car was stopped put in park and restarted in the park posistion, now it starts sometimes but mainly not. can anyone help, ive checked all the fuses, all ok, when key is in the on posistion there is no power at the coil?

okay so i went and removed my oil trap and cleaned it a bit didn't seem to have any restriction whatsoever, i could blow through it very easily, the small vacuum port in the 45degree angle plastic piece was plugged solid though, i cleaned that out. idle quality seemed to improve but seemed to change good bad periodically? (it runs to the intake) is there anything else needed to check in the pcv system?

Ok so thank you for your response to my posts they have been very helpful. I just did some exhaust work. i live in a no smog law county and the cat was plugged so i took it off and gutted for now. lots more power trouble is i am sucking the turbo intake hose shut at about 4200rpm. i will be replacing the intake hose and also my flame trap. i was curious if i could also run a breather style oil fill cap or if this will just injest the wromg stuff through my turbo? also i will be putting a high flow air filter on.

I have to say when this volvo groove i started was for an economical trans. car. now i have found myself really having alot of fun with it and getting good milage at the same time!!!

i was looking under my engine last night at work and saw what appears to be a switch or sensor. rh side of block towards the rear. just below th head. it is in the block but does not have any wires or plugs going to it...any ideas?

I have an engine with a rattle. I have pulled the exhaust no help, new plugs, air filter, oil&filter change. I am a mechanic so my foreman and i checked it out. We ruled out rods, crank, valvtrain. i checked for oil in water/water in oil. head gasket ok. plugs all looked good. engine starts and runs fine...lot's of power. we came to the possible conclusion that it's piston slap. the engine does have 196,000 miles on it so it would make sense. is this a common condition? how long will the engine last? should i go easy on it?...I do also own a trans am that is very fast but my Volvo is mu commuter wich i spend an hour in each day, and like to play with sometimes. also i am running high quality 15w40 oil in it due to it's milage. any ideas? thanks for your time ....Dan.

hi all, i have an 89' 740 turbo wich i am fixing up. I am a full time mechani on cars and big diesel trucks. the question i have is can i run a 180 degree thermostat without any detrimental side affects in my volvo? I have done this to many vehicles in the past for the summertime to let them run cooler without any issues.

The radio in my '86 740 works fine, but won't keep it's presets. The original was replaced with a "new" one from a salvage yard, which had matching-color wires. Everything works OK, but presets don't stick. Here's the wrinkle: This car has some defect in the wiring that causes the battery to slowly drain, so the previous owner installed a beefy cut-off switch which gets turned off every night. The old radio kept it's presets, even shutting the switch off. If I could get a look at the radio wiring, I could isolate the memory wire and bypass the switch. but I can't find the info anywhere. Anyone out there who can help?

I have a 92 740 wagon with an automatic trans that the 4th gear disengagement light will not switch off allowing the car to shift into high gear. If I turn the car off and restart it it still comes on and will not shift into high. I unhooked the battery and still no change. I popped out the switch on the gear selector and looked but still can't figure out what's wrong. I keep pushing it but the light still remains and the car will not shift. Help.

Frustrated.

when accelarating or at high speed, the turbo indicator goes (high) on yellow area, thick black smoke (not oil) comes out of exaust. can this be:
1- turbo
2- converter
3- engine electric
4- or something else.
Turbo works ok at low speed, spark plugs and distributer cap are new.

I want to ask anyone who knows about 740 turbo, my sends out thick black smoke and loses power when turbo indicator goes up to yellow area. Generally when car is going up the hill or when accelarates.

just chasing ideas, opinions on an after market EMS for 740 turbo wagon. the 5500rpm doesnt allow the cars full potential. current mods are:
3" turbo back exhaust, Front mount intercooler, custom cold air intake, BOV, upgraded fuel system 15psi boost

any help grealt appreciated
