HI THERE,

I was wondering if someone can help me...

I have a 1992 940GL that is acting up with the electronics.

It let me down 2 times already and I took it to the dealer 2 times and they will keep putting their hands on my pocket and still without finding the problem.

Usually when I turn on the car Half of the lights in the cluster will turn on but half way so not all the way but half the bright except of the abs one. now If I get lucky All the lights will go off and the car will run ok, but If I run like this the car will absolutely die in the middle of the street. It happens 2 times already and I don't know what else to do.

Does it ring any bell with some of you?

Any help will be extremely appreciated as I don't know what to do with the dealer horrendous service.

I have a trusted 940gle turbo (1985cc). It has a niggle it stalls after accelleration.

Accelerate, dip the clutch, wait and the revs drop to zero (undershoot) the engine dies. Do this statically (not under load) it is fine. Do it under light load (turbo gauge below half way) it undershoots a bit but does not die. It does not make the car undriveable but it is a nuisance.

I have cleaned and checked the bypass valve and butterfly assembly. The butterfly position sensor works and there are no fault codes.

It is not a fuel problem as I have an LPG conversion (injector) and it happens on gas and petrol excactly the same.

When I ease on the throttle of my '94 940, the car sort of vibrates. It stops after I begin to accelerate after 5 mph or so. It seems to be coming from the back of the car. I thought it might be something loose on the driveshaft like a seal or something, but that's just a guess. Any ideas?

This is kind of a dumb question, but what makes a car an 855 as opposed to an 850? Or a 944 or 945 instead of a 940?

Also I wanted to replace the stock instrument cluster lights with blue ones, what kind of bulbs should I use?

As the title says, I have black foam coming from my vents when my A/C is on or even when Air is on high. I found some data to how to clean it but my question is, do I need to replace these foam sheets on the air doors?

I have a '90 960 Turbo with an auto that is changing all ok, BUT it seems to kickdown way to early/easily. By that I mean it will hold a lower gear much longer than it needs to and I have to drop the power to persuade it to shift. This results in a on/off, fast/slow ride... Is there a switch or vacuum unit that is faulty that could be causing this fault..
The gears are strong and there is no slippage.

Help....

i'm interesting in changing the interior lighting, (gauges, windows, switches, etc) how would i go about doing this ?

i'm in search of the front lip for my 965. mine has been broken. if anyone has one for sale or knows where i can purchase one please let me know.

Now hitting 183, 000 miles I ask myself, how do I proactivily maintain my car?
What does one do for a car at 182k and then again at 200k? Should I simply double my current maintenance schedule for 60k and 100k?

So that would look like this, at 182k I should be doing my 60k work of;

Engine Drive Belts
Air Cleaner Filter
Spark Plugs
Timing belt

Inspect
Automatic Transmission fluid
Rear Axle Oil

Hi - I hit some standing water at speed yesterday and the force of the water knocked off a part from underneath the car. It is a two part case or cover the same shape as an exhaust muffler box and might have contained some insulation. I assume it to be some form of heat insulation/casing and there there is no gap in the exhaust system. Can anyone tell me what this might be and its importance?

I'm totally new to this forum ... and Volvo :-() but now I got me a 960 3.0 from 1991 and it probably(?) needs a timing-belt change
(sorry ... I'm not sure what exactly these things are called in Englsh)
Does anyone have any experience and/or instructions for this ... or know of any "manual" that describes how it should be done !??
(or is this something one should not attempt at home ?)

93/940 with 193k. When car is stopped at a light this load squealing noise comes from engine. As soon as I touch gas pedal, the rpms increase the squeal is gone. I have checked the belts, timing belt, alt bearing. it does not happen when driving. only at idle. It does not happen all the time.
Any one experience this problem and what was it?

there are three openings in my air intake box. one for when the air comes in, the next for when the air goes out into the maf sensor, and the third i don't know.. thats what i'm wondering. what is that third tubular coil thing that attaches to the far left bottom part of the box and is it really needed?

after driving for about 10mins, engine nicely warmed up,slowing up to a junction, just in low revs the oil light shows red first, then all the other red warning lights show at the same time, then the engine shuts off. turn the ign key and it will start, this then happens intermittently at any time thereafter, engine seems in good nick done 189000 no other probs. any ideas ? thanks, XANDER

I have a 1993 Volvo 940, non-turbo, with ~103K miles. Over the past three or four months the engine has started to suddenly die about every 400 miles as if it ran out of gas. It always restarts after 1-3 minutes and runs great afterwards...until it dies again. This happens within 5-15 minutes of starting the engine. It's getting air and spark and I've cleaned the injectors and air filter. It runs freakishly well except for these brief neurotic interludes when it dies at anywhere from 20-60 mph. The Volvo dealer can't figure it out because their diagnostic computer won't tell them what the problem is. So...what do you think? Fuel pump? It's sort of scary when it stops on freeway overpasses and busy streets. Where I live, there are no non-busy streets. I'll post on the bulletin board as well; I'd appreciate any advice. I have a 1995 960 S/W. The car runs greast but the idle is very rough. When it has idled before I shut it off it's sometimes hard to start it again.
Any idea?

I am a new member of this forum. I just bought a 1996 volvo 960 sedan last week. It looks and drives very well. There is no leakage under the chassis. Today I found the floor under the carpet was wet. And the fluid is water, not oil. I took those four carpet out, dried the floor by paper and cloth. But it seems that the floor becomes wet again after I drive, especially the rear right seat position. I am at Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It did not rain yesterday and today.

The car has 110,000 miles on it.

What caused this? Is this due to AC? The AC water does not drip to the ground? How to fix it?

hello all, im new here and just picked up a 1997 960. a/c was blowing hot air so i started going through the system. first thing i found was on top of the reciver dryer, the switch on to was unpluged, so i pluged it in and the compresor cycled on and of fast..............low freon? so i toped it off, the instuctions i had said turn a/c on max cold position and plug on guage and start filling till pressure is correct. so i got the air blowing nice and cold, compressor seemed to be working properly. so i get down the street and it starts blowing hot, so i head back and now i can get the compressor to come back on, so i turn the car off, wait a min or so and re-start and turn a/c on..........compressor enguages and starts blowing cold again so i check the freon level again to make sure it didnt all leak out, it was just where i left it, so the system seems to be sealed, i go around the block again and it blows hot withen 30 sec or so. and the compressor kicks off.......................? im stumped, could it be that the pressure is to high and it takes 30 sec to 1 min for the saftey switch to kick it off? all fuses and relays are good....another aspect...........start car turn a/c on....works fine and i hear the comp engage, turn a/c off wait 5 sec, turn a/c on and it wont engage comp................such thing as a relay overheating? where should i go from here?

Hello everybody, I'm new here cause I just got my first Volvo (2 hours ago)

It is a 1992 940 Gl, and there is some things that needs to be adressed and I hope I can get some help here, I hope I can offer it as well in the future as I strongly believe in forums.

The main problem I have to take care of is that when you crank the car you have to keep it cranking for several seconds pressing the gas pedal ethusiastically until it finally starts the engine not without some previous hesitations in the RPMs but going stable after that. Now I lack a lot of knowledge but I have a strong mechanical inclination and I was able to take care of things with other cars.

Is there any idea idea you may suggest? I feel that it should be an easy fix, but I can't be sure...

The other thing I wanted to ask is which is your prefered online parts store to get some switches and stuff.

Need help, tried to jump start and I messed up and connected wrong poles (+ to -)
I replaced the battery and now it will not even turn; inside lights come on but no ignition light on. Did I blow a fuse? if so which one? Please help

I have a 1993 940 Wentworth Turbo Estate.
The problem of the engine dying seems to be a common one but no-one describes exactly the same problem as mine.
(Appears husband found the same forum and registered after me so I've nicked his description.)

I have a 95 Volvo 940 Wagon with an issue I haven't run across before. When accelerating the air from the vents in the dash diminish to almost nothing. It doesn't sound like there is diminishment in the fan speed. Just a muffling like a door closed in front of the fan. To add another dimension to the problem I can't duplicate while parked. The vehicle has to be moving for this to happen. I was told to check for a probable vacuum leak in the dash.

I removed the radio and other stuff below the A/C control. I removed the trim and stuff below the steering wheel I crawled under there for a visual and audible inspection. Nothing. There are 3 things that look like vaccum reservoirs all with vacuum lines going to them. Everything looked and sounded fine. No hissing and everything was connected. I also looked at the vacuum lines on the engine side they were in good condition with no leaks.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I need to replace the original radio/tape in my 1993 960. How do I find a mounting kit that will fill the double sized hole the current system fills up?

so i take my 965 wagon to the dealership where it was from to get just my back right turning signal bulb replaced, i was previously told by the shop advisor that it would be 10 bucks for the bulb and he would pop it in for free.

53 dollars later i have a working turn signal, but not a new one. they put an old one in it.

im just wondering. how much are they gunna charge me when i go back to get the horn replaced?

Does anyone have instructions or advice on the fitment of the Volvo steel Dog Guard to a 1992 940 estate. I have located the pre-installed bolt holes for the pivot but, I need to know the placement sites and orientation for the four (two large, two small) black retention clips which respectively hold the guard in either the open (up) or closed (down) position. Ok I need the wiring diagram for my 940 turbo (1991) I have the haynes manual, but when you trace through the fog lights they go to fuses 8 and 9 - instead of 7 as the diagram on the back of the ashtray and the section at the front of the electrical section shows (haynes manual) the diagram in the manual corresponds with the one for the SE.
The problem I have is a non operational set of rear fog lights, the fuse is ok and the relay ( though there seems to be 2 fog light relays and an auxiliary light relay).
There is no power gwtting through to the rear fogs, but the power is there at the relay and at the fuse. the rear fog cable seems to have a different colouring to that which leaves the fusebox - this is worrying as it means it goes through another circuit somewhere. short of running a new wire through from the fusebox I am nort sure where to look next, from the (wrong) wiring diagram I have it shows a bank of connectors somewhere near the back, wether this is the case and what its location is I dont know, I suppose i will have to strip out the looms to find what I want.

..the center vents. I just noticed today that my center vents are not blowing as cold as my driver side vents. What could be the problem?

my transmission will get into gear properly when i put it in drive it hesitates when leaving lights and going into reverse, it will also give a last minute lunge forward when i stop at a light this all started after i changed to mobile 15,000 mile oil? the car has 187,000 miles on it its a 1996 960 is it going to die? how do i save it?

A bit of a lame first post, but could someone tell me what the dash lights mean (like oil , abs etc) i havent got a handbook and there are a couple i dont know( i have a 940s 2l petrol, 1992)thanks.

I recently purchased a used 1997 960/S90 on ebay. Yesterday, the differential went out in it :-( So I need to find one. Problem is that I don't know what I have.

The ebay auction listed it as a 1997 S90. The badge on the trunk says S90. The VIN # search comes back as a 960.

I have no idea which I actually have, and need to locate the right differential for it.

I'm new to this site. I have a 96 Volvo 960. Does anyone know any good websites that I can order parts for my car that are not too expensive? You know, reasonably priced? Thanks for your help!

My Dad has a 93 940 and has this knocking noise when slowing down coming from under the engine. The noise is gone while accelerating. Any help wil be appreciated.

now i went to the best custom system place in town the other day and they told me yes, they could wire those all up in my car, but it might cost upwards of $700 because older volvos need all new speakers when they get any aftermarket electronics put in. is there any way i can avoid this?

I have a 1995 Volvo 940 sedan. The cigarette lighter works okay except when I use a 12 adapter plug for charging a cell phone or portable cd player, I get no indication there's voltage the 12 adapter plug to the device. I thought perhaps the 12 volt receptical the lighter plugs into needs to be replaced with a longer (or deeper) receptical. I hope this question isn't too trivial. Thanks for any replies.

I just had a transmission from an 88 740 turbo put in my girl's 93 940(non-turbo). The problem we're having is that it won't go into 4th gear. From what we can tell, the tranny was good, shifts strongly thru 3rd, but won't go into 4th. What could be the problem?

tired of those micro lightbulbs, i`ve decided to "do something" and converse them to LED`s ( most likely this post should go to Tech forum, but im not sure if those switches are specific to 900 series so im posting that here)

tools needed - dremel tool , tiny drill, soldering iron.
parts - LED`s, 1kOhm resistors, old light bulbs.
time - about 5-10 minutes a bulb.

Original light of switches is green`ish, but inside of the switch is built in blue filter, so original yellow light from lightbulb + blue filter = green. I forgot about that, and i did use a bright white LED`s, so now my switches are more blue than green , but they are brighter that way. (so for original green light you will need to use yellow LED`s).
now how to do it:

• 1. extract old lightbulb from that white plastic holder
• 2. cut off with dremmel part of the holder, so it will be shorter
• 3. fix holes with the tiny drill ( the ones that were used for wires from old lightbulb)
• holder is now prepared
• 4. my white LED`s were 5mm in diametr, that is too much to fit in switch, so I treated them with my favourite dremmel to make their diameter smaller - that is why LED in "after" picture is not transparent
• 5. stick LED in the holes in holderand wrap one of the "legs" like original bulb was wraped
• 6.now the tricky part, take 1kOhm resistor and wrap one of its wires around holder (likethe original one) and second one solder to remaining LED wire.
• 7. trim excessive wires and voila

install conversed led in switch - test it - if does not work, turn whole holder 180 degrees, and if all was connected propertly - you have new switch illumination



in case of question.... just ask

I am looking for some guidance on how difficult it is to replace the o2 sensor on a 95 960. I have a mechanic telling me that it is terribly hard to get to in order to replace, and was wondering if this is true or not. He wants $400 to replace it.

If it is not that difficult, any guidance so that I could do it myself would be helpful!

I have a 1992 Volvo 940 Turbo, I really havent had any problems with the car until recently. I just came home from a week vacation and noticed a pool of oil under my car, this is strange because it has never had this problem in the past... I havent had the time yet to get under the car and check for the specific location of the leak, but am open to any suggestions any of you may have? The car is in great shape, roughly 128,000 miles.

second issue i've been having is with the over-drive light on my dash (the orange arrow). Recently this has just been turning on and off randomly...causing my car to run at higher rpms when engaged. This has never happened, any ideas???
