If the current tires on my Volvo are a certain size but I want to upgrade to thicker tires, will that be possible? Or do i have to get tires that specifically match the current tires on my car right now?

Strange problem that just popped up. Driving home from a baseball game on cruise control. Notice climbing a hill the speed is dropping -- very unusual with this car as it tends to keep pretty consistent speed. Didn't think too much about it as I crested the hill and the speed went back up -- until the next hill.

Disengage the cruise and push the accelerator and no acceleration -- revs drop and the car starts to slow. Feather the acellerator to neutral or slight accelleration and it maintains speed of about 55 mph.

Any Ideas?

Greetings!!! I'm looking to purchase a Volvo 940. I have three to choose from. They are each $2000. I'm trying to decide which one is the best bet. I'm seeing a bit of a jump in values between 1992 models and 1993 as listed on the Edmunds site. Is there anything that explains this?1991-1992 are close in value, 1993-1994 are also close. Did Volvo change something?
The three cars I'm looking at are:
1991 940SE 204000 miles, very clean. New brakes and blower motor. Everything works
1992 940 Turbo 185000 miles, also very clean. Mechanic owned havn't seen in person yet.
1994 940 Turbo 185000 miles, little rougher, drivers seat very worn, trunk lid needs alignment (lifted up a little at front drivers corner) pertty sure everything works o.k. but missing trunk CD that the other two have. Timing belt @154000 miles drives very good, but not as tight of a feel as the 1991 SE.

Does the model year of the 1994 make it more desireable despite rougher cosmetics? or is the pricing difference I see on Edmunds just a fluke?

I just purchased a mint 94 940 wagon with less than 80k!! It's a true jewel with only 2 minor flaws that I'm looking for help with.
1) How does one reset the service required light?
2)The orange overdrive arrow pops up every now and then and I can't turn it off using the switsh on the gear shift handle?
Other that those minor oddities, it's a great car!!

Buddy across the street has a 96 960. The passenger side front turn signal has been replaced. The cover is clear, it does not have the amber portion, just an amber bulb. The drivers side turn signal needs to be replaced, but everything we can find online has the amber lens. He likes the clear lens better, and I agree with him. We popped both of them out and the old one has a part number but the new one (the clear one) doesn't. Does anyone know where you can get the clear one? Appreciate the help.

HI, I have the above model and had a recent oil leak from the oil cooler, my local garage said the cooler was not neccesary and removed it ! can anyone advise just how important this part is.

I want to install a LSD on my 940. I would like to know which Volvos 900-series comes with it. Also, this factory LSD, it is a clutch type? I heard Dana 30 carriers also fit, like the Dana30 Detroit TrueTrac all gear driven LSD, but I am not sure.
My 940 is a late 1995 model.

The car is a 1995 Volvo 960.

A different mechanic found the A/C "high side" inlet. Apparently, my mechanic was trying to fill a non-related inlet!

I was told by a third mechanic that there is no "low side" inlet for Volvos?

Can anyone tell me if the "low side" inlet exists? If so, do you know where it is on my car?

Also, my A/C compressor turns on and off about every five seconds. Seems kind of quick to me. Is this normal?

Hopefully someone has had these symptoms and can direct me to the problem.

I have a 1994 Volvo 940 SE w/ approx 160,000 Miles. Recently the car was driven an hour out of town and stalled (simply cut off, turns over, but won't fire)...towed home (started after it arrived and was moved to be parked). Went out one day to see what it would do...it started, let idle for a while, then did some hard acceleration (excercise) in neighborhood before going into town. Drove fine to the store (2 miles), but when I returned to car to leave for home wouldn't start again. After B/Sing(wiggling wires, etc.) or maybe it was just the amount of time...it started and got halfway home before stalling again. Needless to say, it hasn't left the house since that second tow home.

Now I'm getting back into trying to diagnose what's wrong.
I believe, from using the OBD LED reader, that the system is pointing to 'air temperature sensor'...I can't locate that sensor on this model (I assume the Mass Airflow Meter replaces it?) I don't know if this fault code is related to my problem, but it seems the problem only arrises after the engine is at operating temperature and the idle is/has been at a cruising speed (ex. 2,000RPMs)...I was able to cause it to stall while parked by just holding the revs for a couple mins...also, when held at 'above idle' RPMs, it seems to have unusual fluctuation in engine speed when a/c compressor kicks on/off (but never noticed when on highway)

Summary: Engine stalls at operating temperature and will not fire until cooled completely.

Please help me narrow this and at least find the component malfunctioning. Thanks!

Just picked up a nice 94 940. Somehow the alarm enabled itself and now I
cannot seem to disable it. Each time I open the door off it goes. Locking and
unlocking the doors with key has no effect.

1. What caused the alarm to enable
2. How do I disable it without the key fob?

Hello! I'm a long time 140/240 owner, but I now have the opportunity to purchase a '94 940 non-turbo wagon.

This car is sitting at my Volvo mechanic's shop, with a leaking head gasket. The owner wants to get rid of it (having purchased a new Volvo), and may let it go for $1000-$1500. My mechanic has done all the service on this car since 87k miles (it now has about 180k miles on it). Recent work done is new shocks/struts, new radiator, heater core, heater fan motor, and all water hoses. The reason for the leaking head gasket is because the heater core failed, and the car overheated.

My mechanic says that for about $1500 I could get the head resurfaced and a valve job, and it should be good to go for another 100k miles.

Other than that, there's some minor cosmetic things, but the paint is beautiful, and it's never been wrecked.

Any opinions?

what's the difference between the F and the K
is the block the same

i.e. will all the sensors fit from the F on the K block

so can I put the F manifolds on, fit the sensors and turn the carb engine into injection?

last couple of days I have lost dip/main beam .
dim-dip, spots & flashers work fine
all fuses are fine
pulled all the fusebox relays & lamp falure sensor and found
no external damage(burnt/corroded pins)

Hello from a very new member. I have recently become the owner of a 1993 940 estate which I love! Just one niggle, the centre seat belt in the back needs replacing. I have a new one but can't see how to get the old one out of the seat any clues????

got a 940 Gl estate with a sick engine,
the engine is 1986 cc injection.
what problems would I encounter fitting a 244 engine,
the engine is ( I'm told 21?? cc ) with carb
I assume it won't have all the sensors fitted

Dual fuel 940 1991 giving me grief and I'm working blind without a clue
to the sensors locations

An ECU flow chart would also be fantastic as I'm considering modifying/conditioning some of the inputs to change some parameters when I'm running on gas.

IE. does the lambda input alter the timing as well as the fuel?, does
the ign advance to the point the knock sensor tells it to back off?

Am looking at purchasing a 1993 Volvo 960 and trading in our little 3 cylinder, 1990 Pontiac Firefly. We need some weight advantage. I was thinking the weight of the 6 cylinder engine would help. Is this Volvo 960 (1993) a front wheel drive, or a rear wheel drive also? We live in an area where the prevailing winds could be affective to vehicular traffic. Thanks.

Hello everyone. Have a problem w/my 1995 960 sedan. Sometimes when you start the vehicle for some reason you're in winter mode, but the lights on the mode selector switch are jumping between winter and whichever ( sport or economy) mode the vehicle was left in. Also the upshift light (on dash) flashes. Other times vehicle stars in proper mode and life is great for days. Tried a used selector switch, but basically the same(maybe a little better). Could it be a bad switch or is there a relay acting up and if so where is the relay.Thanks in advance. Towne

I just autozone scanned our "96" 960 and I received the following:

1) P0410 Secondary air injection sys malfunction
2) P0118 engine coolant temp circuit high input
3) P0304 Cylinder 4 misfire detected

I would like to fix Number 3 first.
Any advice and direction would be much appreciated !

We recently purchased a wondeful car, a 1993 Volvo 960. It runs great, "purrs like a kitten till my lake pipes roar." Beautiful vehicle. Inline 6 engine., this tranny with that W-S-E thingie going. Cool! Love i!

My earth-shattering question is this: Now that the 960 is "no more," what is the Nomenclature that took its place in the new Volvo models? Thanks for your replies and responses.

Just curious, when I bought my first volvo, was told to use only a Volvo filter, as it has a back flow valve designed for the car. Mann also has a filter that looks and is probably the exact same thing. I know the inside of a Fram is different. Does anyone know? Also, what about oil?

Recently bought a 1995 /960 with 57.000 miles...car runs great and most everything works...I noticed the car is equipped with SIP and on the door jam there is a sticker stating that sensors and safety belts should be replaced in April 2005....Is this a must ,is this covered by warranty and if not is it costly ? Tks for any info...JL.

I hve a '94 940 (bought it used a month ago, 96k miles.) While driving today, the red SRS light came on and stayed on for a good minute or two. Then it went off and immediately the check engine light came on. Looking at the owner's manual, it appears that the SRS is the air bag? Why would the SRS light come on, turn off and the check engine light come on?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am from Eygpt and working in Saudi Arabia, and this is my first post. I have VOLVO 940 GLE turbo 1998 running 126260 km and I got some problems with AW71 auto tranny as it is some times dose not get in gear when I put it in R, when I shift to D and go back to R it works fine in addition to that some times there are hard shifting if put to D or R but when it is running on the road the other gears shifting fine.

Is there any solution for this problems or the tranny need to be rebuild?

I am new at this forum and are very interested in many technical details of my volvo. Many repairs I try to do myself. Could anyone help me with the following:
I own a '93 model of a 940 with airco and a leaking heater core. I got (by mail) a standard heater core with 90 degrees bend top connections. (for mounting through the board to the engine room)

Being in the proces of demounting the core I found the connections on the existing core were straight from the front with hoses to a valve ....... Nowhere to be found on the net !
If I want to mount the one I got I will have to mount it upside down, with the connections on the bottom facing the interior.

Anyone has a suggestion if this is possible ?? Will it work ?

Another newbie here, with a few questions if that's ok?

I have a 1993, 940 Auto. Wentworth Estate, with the 2 litre (petrol) turbo engine and 166,000 miles.

1). I have a major oil leak which appears to be coming from the rear of the engine, but I cannot pinpoint the source. It seems to be underneath, near the bellhousing. Any ideas?

2). The drivers side heated seat does not work (although the passenger side does), is there a fuse that controls this, or a relay somewhere?

3). I have had one or two moments over the last month or so, where the car stalls for no apparent reason, but will start if I leave it for an hour or so. After leaving for a day, its ok again. It first happened after I put it through a car wash, after a period of being off road and needing a clean! Is there a chance that moisture gets into the ignition system, although the dizzy cap is way back at the back of the engine block?

4). I notice that upon starting, the engine turns over very slowly, but always starts first time, (except when experiencing problems as in previous question). Would a change of battery help here, I think it's about 5 years old? It was suggested the diesel battery would be a good buy.

Hello all - I am a newbie here and I have a problem with my 940turbo. I have replace all the fuses and I cannot seem to find what the problem is with the dash lights and the gear selector backlight.

Is this a common problem with these cars?

Is this to general a question to narrow down to a couple of different solutions.

I would really appreciate some help for this.

Hi, I have had a problem on the ABS System after having a friend jump starting my car (A 1992 940 B230FB equipped with a Bosch ABS System) and inverting + and - (grrr...). The fault code (1.2.2) says that it is a right sensor failure, but after inverting the sensors, It still remains and I cannot erase it.

It looks like it might be the ABS ECU (if there is one).
Does anyone know where the ABS ECU is ?
or have ideas for solving the problem ?
(my Volvo garage although volvo specialist won't hear about it...)

i have an intermitting problem in reving up to speed,as it gets to 30 - 50 mph it is as if the enging is strugling for fuel, and i have to ease the pedle lightly to be able to get any place. but other days it is normal.

I could use some Volvo expertise. I'm looking to buy a used Volvo 940 and I've narrowed my selection down to two. One is a 93 Turbo 940 with 121k miles and the other is the base 94 940 with 95k miles. The 94 has all its service records and was recently serviced. The 93 Turbo doesn't have any service records. I like the 93 turbo better (sportier, more hp, white w/black trim) but it has quite a few electronic gadgets (power everything, sunroof) and electronic gadgets tend to break down. They're both about $3800. This would be my first Volvo - from what I understand, Volvos except for the 850 series tend to be very reliable. How concerned should I be with the 93 940 Turbo? Do they have a tendency to have problems or is it a fairly safe choice as long as I get it service regularly? Any feedback would be appreciated.
