My son has just purchased a 940 Turbo injected of course & we were wondering what sought of mileage we may expect as our goverment slaps a massive tax on petrol.

The car has a 115000 on the clock & is a 1994 model it seems to run like a dream but we just hope it not a gas-guzzerler.

decided to try to do this myself.....

so it's now getting late and i haven't even got the old radiator out yet. problem is the sensor plugged into the bottom of the radiator. the new one doesn't have this??? and i can't get thing off anyway. and it's releasing air at the fitting. could someone please tell me what this is (sensor from the fan maybe??) and how to get it off? and, what about the new one not having this?

btw, I'm a newbie here. and i obviously know just enough about maintaining my own car to get me into trouble...any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was driving my 1992 940 when it started to roughly pulsate the RPM's between an almost dead idle to 1500 when idling at a Dunkin Donuts drive-thru. I took it to the dealer who found no codes, and also found it running fine. It drove wonderfully all night. It sat in the drive over night. When my wife started it the next morning, it stalled. She started it again and it reved to about 2000, then dropped back to less than 500, back up to 2000, down to a sputter, up to 2000 and to a stall.

What is strange is that it usually runs great and we cannot find a pattern to the times it starts this pattern. It did this when hot, and again when cold, and then runs for some unknown reason it runs fine.

Help. No one seems to know what to do. Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone have any solutions?

Which is the best engine oil & gear box oil for volvo.

Air pump on my 96' 960... it fell off, the bolts holding the thing on.... well they are rubber hangers with bolts attached to them on either side. I guess I will need to go to the dealer for those... but WHAT THE **** is this thing, I have never come across something like this other cars... so does my 960 really need it? I know it pumps air into the exhuast manifold to heat the catalytic converter up, or something like that. Also can it go bad and make bad noises....
has anyone come across problems with this pump???????????

ok gang im still at a lost my 91 940 turbo is still smoking and running verry rich.i have taken off the turbo its an mitts.turbo so i took it apart and cleaned it out,no oil in it but a lot of carbon build up.put it all back together what a pain in the **** to do.put new plugs in and cleaned out the throtel body.still running like crap,has no power and still smoking at idel turbo seems to be working fine.i went to start the car today and now it want even idel whit out putting the foot on the peadel.now i thought i was an ok shade tree man i have a 86 240 gl wagon that was verry easy to work on but im a lost on this one, i cant even find a repair manuel on this car to go by.can sombody help and tell whats i need to do to fix my car so i can love driving her agian.

My 1993 940 has a fuel guage snafu. It either registers empty (most of the time) or it will register half a tank (no matter how much gas is in the car). Usually when it registers half, it will flip to empty after a little while. Anybody got an idea?

hi folks my car has a knock and i thought it was an exhaust rattle but when i put it on the ramps the noise was cumming from the gearbox the car drives ok and no gear change probs (just noisey) any ideas bearings etc

Does anyone know who makes an adapter for putting a Ford 5.0 V8 in a Volvo? I have heard there is companies that make them, but haven't found one yet.

When I drive my 940 turbo wagon to work in the morning it runs and drives great. When I drive home from work it feels like its missing and the rpm guage reflects this also, like it hick ups intermittantly its wierd and like I say it only does it on the way home.........any advise

233k and runs well except for periodic dying.After it dies I coast to side of the road and wait a minute and it starts and runs fine until nextstall which can be from 1 to 100+ miles. Had it on a computer check, new gas filter. Lucas cleaner in gas tank and it continues. Thanks for any help.

Hi I recently get a 2-4-1 after changing the 0 2 senser rechecked the hoses and found one opened and reconnected it. is that going to solve the problem? It is sluggesh when starting but that seems to clear up after about a minute. Will the computer readjust?

Hey all, new to this forum but not new to volvos. Have a 1996 960 sedan, black on black. Had this car for a while (2years) it sat in my driveway for 1.5 years just got it back on the road do to crashing and totaling my other car (2000 Subaru WRX, still waiting to go to cousins shop to strip her of the parts and off to ebay they go)
Figure I will drive the 960 as an everyday car (winters will suck with the rear drive)
will be looking for another toy car, and possibly moding the 960...

ONE Question- can someone point me in the right direction, did anyone fix a power seat in the volvo... the **** part of the seat is stuck in the up position and need it to go down to the floor, I hear the motor clicking but no movement.

I had the serpentine belt break due to the AC compressor burning up. I have replaced the compressor and belt but the warning lights are staying on and I'm not sure if the alternator is charging. Could the overheated compressor have taken out the alternator also?

hi gang i hope u can help us out on this one,we are are nuts about volvos we have ans 86 240 gl wagon that has 215,000 miles on it and runs great.we just baught an 940 tubo from a man that has been sitting in his garage for about a year.the body and inside is in grate shape, but it does have some have some problems,the car runs great but blows out white smoke and the speedo jumps all over the place. since i never had a turbo befoer but allwas wanted one sombody says that oil is getting into the turbo itself and has to be rebult.can sombody help me out and tell me what i should do. Very happy with our "new" 1994 Volvo 940 Wagon. My question is this... How do the kids buckle up in those rear facing auxiliary seats? This info sure would come in handy to a family of five, with a babysitter often in tow!

I m glad to find this place. Hopefully somebody explains whats wrong with my 1992 Volvo 960 sedan. It happend today. While waiting for red turn to green the car jerks couple of times. After accelerating on green no problem. Before it did another kind of stuff. While pushing the gas to accelerate into the highway some kind of shuddering so have to slow down and go ahead only 90 km/hr. Interestlingly all this happening only sometimes. Nobody can tell me why. Fuel system ??? fuel pumps ?? drivetrain??? Will appreciate very much some suggestions

"Ever since" That was the the WORST possible phrase to have uttered in an auto service office. Typically, it would go something like this "EVER SINCE you changed my oil, I get a noise while braking", or "EVER SINCE you tuned up my car, the radio reception has gotten terrible". I swear %90 of the time, it was totally unrelated to anything we (as mechanics) had done to the car. I figure that when the customer got the bill for all of the work we had done, they just wanted to complain about SOMETHING!

Well, EVER SINCE I fixed my Wifes AC, the battery has been going dead. In all honesty, it started even before I re-installed the "repaired" HVAC Head. She took the car with no HVAC/Radio/Lighter/etc... and the next morning the battery was dead:

I now have an electrical problem in my Wifes car. It started when she took the car before I even put the HVAC/Stereo/ETC back in (see my AC problem thread). The next morning the battery was dead. There is a decent 'draw' with all items turned off in the car (as evident with a 'test light') placed in series between the negative battery terminal and the negative cable terminal.

I have pulled all of the fuses from the box and found that it only goes away when #1 fuse (Fuel Pump/Engine Control) is removed (I have taken out the radio while working in the fuse panel). I have the battery on charge currently and will test it later to see if it just happened to go bad at the same time as me working on the AC. I also will get out my Multimeter and see how many Amps the 'draw' is.

BTW: Yes, the battery is old and No, I haven't gotten it fully charged to determine if it just happened to fail at the worst possible time (right after a unrelater electrical repair). I am off on vacation next week, and I have only done 'preliminary' diagnostics to the car. I just figured that I would put this out there in case there was a 'typical' problem with a draw on the #1 fuse (does anyone know what a 'typical' draw would be? Measured on a Mutlimeter in series between the neg. cable terminal and the battery.

I'm looking to replace the front discs and calipers on my '91 940 Turbo. I've come across some pretty inexpensive refurbished calipers on Swedish Engineering Used Parts (hosted on eBay) and was wondering what I should check to make sure I'm buying the right thing and that the calipers are in good shape. I know my calipers are of the Girling type (with ABS).

Same goes for the discs. I found some Front + Rear discs + all pads for $120 (CAN$) on eBay !? Sounds a bit too good to be true. What about cross drilled discs? I've read that they give better braking power and cool faster but how will that affect pad wear and how will the ABS behave with those discs ? What about anti rust coatings ? Worth paying extra for that?

Any info is welcome!

ive got a 1997-1998 volvo s 90 which has given me a few problems this yr but has been resolved except for the problem of my gas guage. its pretty much always giving me a reading of 3/4 to full at all times, even right before i fill gas of 17-18 gallons. i now use one of the gauges that tells me my distance since the last gas fill up. once i hit around 230 miles i fill all the way to ensure that i have at least 230 miles of driving till my next fill up. im not sure if its the guage - electrical problem or the floater, that has to be fixed or replaced. any help would be great.

- I just bought a '91 940 Turbo and there is a strange vibration when I accelerate the car initialy (as oposed to accelerating to pass for example). I think it's coming from the front wheels as I mostly feel it through the steering wheel. Once I let go of the gas pedal the vibration subsides and the car runs smooth afterwards. Inflating the tires from 23

- Anyone have some mpg data for a similar car ? I also suspect some poor engine tuning...

- Does anyone have the pinout details of the radios that came with the 940's of those years ? I'd like to use the CD input with an MP3 player. Currently I only get the "EEE" display when I try to select the input so I guess the radio needs some signal on a pin somewhere to detect the presence of the CD charger.

hi ya gang just want to say that i love volvos verry much i have an 240 gl wagon that ive had had now for 2 years,and love it verry much now i just bought a 940 turbo sadan in verry good shape runs verry well i paid 1,500 for it wich i what ive had seen is a verry good price for it.one thing that is not working on it is the driver power seat i checked the fuse not blow eny sugeston what it could be. thanks for your help TOM and SANDY

I was losing coolant (empty exp. tank after a 5 mile journey) Originally I thought this was an e/fan problem as it wasn't cutting in at idle after a journey. But after finding a small amount of coolant on the garage floor, I traced it to a split pipe coming out of Oil Filter base. Pipe replaced, problem solved.

Trying to find the source of the leak threw up a number of puzzles. According to the Haynes comicbook, the sensor for the e/fan is either in the sidetank of the radiator or fits into the top hose. On my 940 it isn't in either place. I traced it to a plastic covered brass unit, bolted to the engine block!

Neither does the Haynes comicbook cover the 2 (or 3) pressure switches fitted low in the rad. front. I found out (by shorting across) that the e/fan is two-speed, presumeably depending on cooling system pressure to increase or decrease fan speed?

My local dealer wasn't very helpful. After all, I wasn't wanting a new car, just advice on an 11yr old one! But the dealers chief-mechanic said he'd heard of my type e/fan sensor, but didn't say where.

Reading other posts on this forum has raised suspicions that my 940 may have a 240 engine fitted? Is this possible?

I decided to strip out and clean the air filter housing and associated components to give them a good clean and check over as i have just got the car and wanted to give it a good clean before i go to a volvo owners meeting.Thing is ,once i put it all back together the exhaust emission control system light came on in my dash? Any ideas please? oh,its a 1991 960 saloon

Just how does one replace the light in the front ash tray of a 960? I slip out the radio and my fat little hands can simply not manouver to get the replacement bulb under the storage box which is over the slot for the light.
Other than this little nuisance I am impressed with this vehicle. As a former BMW owner I am surprised that I had not considered this car before. Great reide and performance.

I started my car yesterday after sitting for about a week. The Trans arrow starting flashing and the mode selector lites are flashing in sequence. W-S-E. When I put the selector in reverse it was fine, I than moved it into drive and the vehicle didn't move, I reved the engine and it engaged. I rode fine shifting like normal. I check the fluids and they are OK. Any ideas whats wrong.

My daughters 1992 960 wagon died on her way to church this morning. Upon inspection I determined that the timing belt broke.

Does this engine B6304F have an interference head? If there is any risk that the engine was damaged, I will most likely part it out.

If it is simply a matter of relacing the belt, I am sure she can get a few more miles out of "Blue Betsy"

My 18 year son is 300 miles from home and lost the remote for his 1992 940. Any suggestions as to where the switch is to disable the alarm is? He claims to have looked under the rugs near the gas/ brake pedals( where a mechanic once told me to look but no luck) Where else could it be ? or any suggestions how to disable it any other way. I am just looking for some advice/opinions. I am just about ready to purchase a 1996 Volvo 960 as a second car. The car has 89,000 miles and has all dealer maintence records up until about 19,000 miles ago. The man is asking $3,500. I drove the car ind it seems solid. May need to have the alignment fixed up a little and a basic tune-up as the check engine light is on. I am wondering if I need to bother bringing it to a mechanic for a check-up before purchasing. The only reason I am hesitant is that it will probably cost at least $100 and The car has obviously had all its required services...its a good price...what do you think?

'95 960 wagon stalled on me today, just will not start, engine will turn over, but will not start. anyone help!!!

Since my 940 GLE it does not start some times, and it shut off while driving (but it starts again after five minutes), I will need to replace the ignition module.
I had replaced distributor cap, rotor and spark plugs, all new Volvo parts.

A good mechanic tells me about the ignition module, but I do not know where is it!

Also, what is the black square box mounted on the firewall, behind the engine???

My car has the 8-valve, low presure turbo B230FK engine.

Hey guys. I'm new here and my I have a 91 volvo 940 turbo. It just recently quit when my buddy was driving through a puddle of water. It quit when water may have splashed up and done something to the engine. The engine will turn over, the plugs look fine, the distributor has been replaced and we don't know why the car won't start. We noticed that a wire with a male plastic end is loose up by the intake manifold. The wire leads to the EGR valve and i need to know if it needs to be connected for the car to run or if the plug is just to test it. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or answers. hey everyone this is my first post and i'm having a little bit of problems powering my subs. I've been trying to find a place to bring the wire running to the battery through the firewall but i don't want to drill a new hole and i can't find a decent gromet thats not important can anyone help me out? thanks alot

I have a 94 Volvo wagon, runs great, looks great, less than 80k!!!
I have 3 little questions:
1)How do you reset the "service Required" warning light?
2)I can't seem to get the release to work on changing the wiper blades. Do you squezze the tab and pull or do you push out the tab and pull?
3)The overdrive warning arrow comes on after i restart the car after a quick stop and the release button has no effect on getting it into 4th gear. But on starting it up again, say the next day, it's fine until I restaert the vehicle.
Any help would be deeply appreciated
