Feature my ride Mark forum as read and return

The schedule for my 1997 V40 2.0T calls for the timing belt to be changed at 80k miles. However I understand when the V40 was introduced in the USA in 2000 (is that right?) the interval was put at 105k miles - but isn't it the same engine? I thought the engine was about the only thing that didn't change with the model revision.
Was the UK maintenance schedule also changed to 105k?
Is it safe to apply this extended interval to earlier vehicles - does anyone know any real grounds for saying yes or no please?
At my present mileage this would give me another 2 years at least, maybe 3.
If it does have to be done, can anyone tell me if it's a fearsome job on this engine? I've changed cam belts on other vehicles but this one looks as though it could be very difficult to get at. Is it one for biting the bullet and paying a garage? Local Volvo garage is about £400, independent about £250 (using genuine Volvo belt and tensioner).

hi,whilst driving my 98 v40 it seems to make a funny noise when in 5th gear,if u dip accelerator u can hear it,its like a dry noise but seems to move fine,its also sounds a little rougher when idling which it normally does very quietly,anyone any ideas?,thanks

i was wondering where the dump / bov / recirculating valve is located in 1998 v40 t4, so if anyone would bother posting some info or even a picture I would greatly appreciate it!

Recently i had a problem with the battery of my 2001 V40 and the radio seemed to have reset. After turning the car back on my HU 605 radio asked for a code, which i don't have.

Can anyone tell me if *EACH* V40 has its own code or if Volvo has a universal code to unlock situations like this?

I just bought a 2002 V40 with 72k miles. Paid $9995. I hope this was a reasonable price. I will pick it up next week after it is detailed. The test drive was fun and I hope our drive cross country is as much fun. At 72k mi, we also purchased the 36k mi/3 years extended waranty for $1700. Any thoughts on whether this was a wise decision? Should I cancel it and get the prorated refund is nothing goes wrong after 10k miles?

i've just purchased a cycle carrier for my 99 v40, I need to fit a light bar as the rearlights and reg plate are covered. does anyone know if the wiring loom is aleady fitted, just needing a multi socket to be added, or do I have to start from scratch?

I am new to the forum..... I am the proud owner of a 2000v40 1.9t with a nice sport package!!!! very happy with the car, trying to fix the little things, like the burnt out bulbs on my instrument cluster and climate controls if anybody has any idea were to buy those greatly apreciated, and I have a question!! Anybody has had problems with the front suspention....... I hear a weird sound on the front wheel on the driver side it almost sounds like rubber and rubber squicking, it does not affect the ride at all but its dam anoying and they couldn't find anything wrong with it in the volvo garage.......any ideas?? I haear a lot about kick down the gears, I'm assuming this means to chage to a lower gear. How do I do this on an automatic s40 1.9t?

I've got a little problem which annoyes me everytime I look at it: a few displaysegments appear not to function properly, see picture: the daytrip counter should read 599.7, not garbage.

Does anyone know what the problem is and if I can repair this myself (I've got a lot of experience with electronics).

I own a Volvo V40 SE - 2001, brought it back in December and it was fine, now (3 months later) it stumbles / vibrates at idle!
I took it for a service / check up at the local garage and they discovered two OBD2 error codes which they couldn't fix. (None Volvo specialist garage!)

What I know:
Mitsubishi 1834cc Engine (under 50k on the clock - seems genuine.)

ODB2 Error Codes:
P0302 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
P1500 - (Engine Specific code) Generator FR Terminal Circuit Malfunction

The garage changed spark plus / leads etc. but the codes remained.

Could these codes be related?
i.e. an ECU connector is loose?

Has anyone had these kind of codes before?
My garage told me that the Mitsubishi engine may need de-coking! Taking the head off etc. this could be quite expensive... This also doesn't seem right as it has such a low millage!

Any help on how to fix this would be appreciated.

OK last week

Monday

Alarm goes off and won't stop whatever i do with the fob. 5 mins it stops........
car will start OK. lock car with fob....hazard lights come on and keep going........

Lock car with key alarm not active no hazard lights..........Odd but makes sense.

Tuesday

Car won't start
RAC say "new battery mate"
new battery same problem, engine sometimes clicks like crazy but doesn't start sometimes you get nothing on the key at all, sometimes you get mad lights flashing on the dash.

RAC come out again....he gets it going with his booster pack...odd.......

Wednesday
Drive to local garage they spend half a day on it and give up.

Thursday
Take it to Pilling volvo Hemel Hempstead (wahtta a mistakah to make-a).
"diagnostic check £56 then we'll phone you with the problems and give you an idea of cost"

No call all day....i'm getting worried

car goes into workshop at 430pm. ( i know cause my office is in sight of the service bays )

Friday

No calls I'm still worried, 1130 I ring reception "the master tech has been on it all morning, we should know the faults soon" I say " is this still part of the £56 diagnostic" answer "yes sir"

Friday afternoon still no call so i phone back.

"we have got the car starting but the tech would like to leave it on the computer over the weekend to be sure we fixed the problem".

Monday

I call at 1130. "the cars fine starting ok no further problems"

Me "ok how much"

"£316, we are only charging three hours labour"........do me a favour!

never told me I was running up a bill even when i specifically asked!.

Any way argued with the service mananger and he split the bill 158 quid.

I get in car start it up drive the 200 yards to my office hit the fob button......................car locks..........and the hazards come on....and keep going.

GREAT!

Jump in car (slightely annoyed as you can imagine) turn the key............nothing................try agin it fires........

back into the garage hand over my keys and wonders off back to the office.

530 i go back round and the recpetionist hands me the keys saying "the alarm control unit is faulty"

I say " hang on you had the car four days and no on noticed that?"

"we were looking for an imobiliser fault sir, and the computer showed no faults in the alarm system"

i say "I bow to your extrodinary incompitance, give me my keys back"

car is intermittant at starting that evening.

Tuesday

Phone service manger "you failed to fix it I've had it not start three or four times since last night, oh and it won't idle properly now and the alarm STILL doesn't work, I appear to have paid £158 for nothing"

he says "what do you want me to do?."

I say " fix it, at no extra cost"

He says " i'll have to speak to the group service manger"

me "ok"

later tuesday

"the group service manger says we are to give you a full refund and we want nothing more to do with you and your car"


Today.

Car won't start at all nothing at the ignition, all the lights are on but no start.

I'm stuck with no dealer to fix it. I can source a new alarm control unit with fobs for 45 quid from a breaker but thats not gonna fix my imobiliser problems............................................any ideas are greatfully received!

I am new to this forum, hope someone can help to solve me problem.
I have a 99's V40T4 , the engine have two cooling fans, one come on all time and the other one come on when it reaches high temp.The problem I am facing is,
sometime the other fan comes on when the temp. reaches half the mark(in the middle of the temp. guage) BUT sometime it comes on when the temp. gauage almost reaches the RED.
Can anyone tell me why?
How I can make sure it comes on when it reaches half the mark.
It is not like the M-Benz or BMW have a temp. sensor.

A new member and great to part of the Volvo community.
I am pleased with my V40 but recently I am unable to remove the key from the ignition. I have been informed by the dealer that the cost would be in the region of GBP 400-500. I fund this incredible as I am hands on and should be able to remove given guidance.

If there is anyone who has any experience then please do let me know how to resolve this problem.

Wife's going ballistic as this her car.

hi,just got a 1997 v40,oil light is always on,guy i got it off says he overfilled it with oil and the sensors now broke hence the light staying on,could he be right,oil level seems ok

Please please please can anyone help me regarding the thule roof bars i have for my 1998 T4 V40.I have got the feet and fittings to attach the roof bars straight onto the car with out the need for volvos runner rails however i dont know if you have to remove the strip off the roof to fit them and i dont want to risk breaking anything on my "PRECIOUS"!!!!Can anyone advise me on how to fit them please

I have a 2000 V40 with ~74K miles. At ~70K it developed a starting problem. If it is cold out it starts right up first thing in the morning. After driving around a bit, if I turn it off for more than 20 minutes I have to crank it for about 4 seconds for it to catch and run. Starting is hard first thing in the morning if it is warm out.

I've had the compression checked and had two different mechanics look at it. They can't find anything wrong. Plugs look fine, turbo looks fine. One guy cleaned the throttle body and that seemed to clear up the problem for a few days at most.

Any suggestions?

Has anyone installed a branded 2-DIN stereo (Kenwood DPX-5000) to their Volvo. Any help re: using mounting brackets and if you had to cut away any of the opening in the dash (something i dont really want to do).

I'm a new member and wondered if anyone can help. My 2001 V40 T4 has a bad wobble under hard acceleration from 55-80mph. I thought it was my tyres & tracking which were unevenly worn on the inner edges. However, following 4 new tyres and tracking reset the problem is still there.
The problem is particularly prevalent when accelerating uphill.
Any ideas what it may be?

Hello I am new to Volvo, I have just bought a 53 plate V40 2.0 LPT. The spare key does not work, I have changed the battery but it still does not work. Is there a way to programme the key?

I have a symbol on my dash that looks like a sun with a lightbulb in the center I am wondering if anyone can tell me what it means?!

I have just changed my front discs and pads on my Volvo V40 ('97 1.8petrol), all went well, and when driving it for the first few miles there were no problems. However, this morning two warning lights came on the ABS (looks like (ABS)) and Braking Circuit Control Light (looks like (!)), which according to the manual indicates that there is a problem with the ABS and EBD system.

I checked the level of my fluid in the reservoir and it was too high, I guess it was topped up when the pads were worn, and thus it became too high, so I have taken some out, so it is now at the recommended level. The lights are still on.

The brakes feel, and work fine, I have even tried braking heavily, and in the rain for that matter, and it stopped quickly, and not locking of the wheels either, so I'm happy enough that it is safe, but obviously being cautious.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions as to what to check, and how to fix this?

wipers now only work on the fast setting. all the other settings do not work.I was told to clean the switch and relay unit ,but I think the relay unit is sealed if its the one on the bottom of the switch. A new switch uit is £87 and a new moter even more ,so will have to save for a rainy day

Is there a pluged hole which can be used or must I drill a hole

Hi my 2002 1.8 v40 has developed a sticking throttle. It seems to stick anywhere between 1000 and 3000 revs and can only be brought down to normal idle speed by blipping the throttle above 3000 revs. Can anyone help with this problem

Our 2002 V40 1.8t, with 65K miles, had 2 broken motor mounts fixed and a front axle repair/replacement when we first got it in June 2005. It had a turbo oil leak about a month later and the mechanic said he thought there might be some problem with the rear axle, too, but didn't think it was dangerous. Now it has become a bit loud and has some cabin vibration (as if motor mounts are broken again?). But what I'd really like some help figuring out, is an annoying squeek from the right side of the dash board, sort of behind/above the glove box--we think. Actually, in very cold weather it squeeks when going over bumps and in warmer weather it is more like a "clunk" noise. Any thoughts on what could make the noise? We were thinking maybe a loose speaker, although music sounds fine. Where is the passenger airbag assembly? Could it be related to the air bag? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well, I sold my T4 and got a saab convertible... although its a nice car loads more bells and whistles than the T4, almost as fast, I really miss my car If he phoned and said he didnt like it and wanted his money back, I would let him have it

My wife's car got stuck while snowshoeing over the weekend. We tried to put it in W mode and we were still stuck. Ended up backing down the mountain because it was so icy.

Now the check engine light and the shift up arrow are on and the shift up arrow is flashing.

Does anyone know that this might be? The car drives fine but figuring that it might have to go to the dealership to have the code checked, I thought I would check here first.

I have just bought a 2003 V40 with a 1.9 diesel turbo. I decided to give it an oil change, looked under to car and found what appears to be 2 sump nuts!

I ‘legged’ it down to buy a Haynes manual to find that it is not available for the diesel car.

Are there 2 sump nuts, or am I looking in the wrong place?

If so, do I have to drain both?

I've just purchased a 2002 V40 Diesel sport. The handbook tells me there should be a light on the dash (coil) which has to go out before starting and I don't seem to have one?

Any info on this would be appreciated as it is my first Diesel.

I am a new member to this forum looking for any advise / guidance.

I have had my V40 for nearly 2 years with no problems until my better half managed to flattern the battery leaving the radio all day and night.

Since then I've had a number of problems which I have listed below:-

1 - Loss of power under acceleration, particularly heavy acceleration. Car feels almost like it is being held back usually slows down until I back off. Under gentle acceleration no problems! When this first started to happen the engine warning light came on, manual stated that would be a problem with fuel or ignition! (The light no longer come on with this problem).

2 - Car cuts out completely again with the engine warning light coming on. First time this happened it started again ok and ran without a problem. This prompted me to take it to a garage, which was no help, they told me there was nothing wrong, and no fault codes were found with the electrical system. This happened again today on my way to work, but this time it would not start. The engine would initially start but then slowly die sounding very rough almost like it wasn't running on all 4 cylinders! Towed it to a local garage where it is now siting waiting to be looked at.

My initial thought was the turbo causing the acceleration problems, but I now woulder wether it is something to do with the engine management system, or could it possible be due to a knackered battery? (It has sometimes struggled to start)

sorry this post is so long. I would appreciate any observations or advise, ideally to sort the problem myself, don't trust garages!
