Hallo,

I have a problem with a 1998 V40 160 PS Turbo.

The engine dies off at idle speed or the power is reduced by higher outside temperatures.
The affect steps up when I start the air conditioning.

Any Idea on that would be helpfull .

Hi Guys,This is my first post on this forum and I hope somebody can assist me with a rather bizarre problem that causes my alarm and hazards to activate,usually because of sudden movements of the the steering i.e. exiting a particular roundabout trips the system out at the exact same point! in order to stop this problem I have to stop the vehicle and tinker with the remote for a while...this does not always stop this problem! Just one more point the sensor on the dash seems to flash when it should presumably be dormant!Could this be caused by a faulty motion sensor?Just as though things were'nt bad enough my hazards are now activated when I use the indicator to make a left turn,again I have stop the vehicle turn the engine off and tinker with the remote!

hi everyone.on my v40 when i sometimes(it seems tempramental) press the brake pedal it doesnt seem to slow the car very well and i feel on the pedal is a juddering but if i release and press again its perfect.
has anyone got any ideas?i think i might be those ridges on the driveshaft for the abs(remember seing them on my vauxhall/dont know if built the same but thats what it feels like)?

Had my 1999 V40 1.8XS (74.000 miles) for a couple of months, still some of the 3 month warranty left on it. They "serviced" the car at time of sale.
When I start up from cold the engine races (revs up to about 1500 and drops back to 600) it does this several times and feels like it could stall as you pull away. The garage says this is normal and the way the choke works - not sure myself.
Generally running at low revs doesn't feel smooth, and have stalled several times when reversing into a parking space and pulling out of a junction.
Normal running is perfect.

Any ideas before I go back to the garage and insist they look at it again under the warranty?
Is it worth going to a Volvo dealer for a diagnostic and how much does that cost?

Today I got an invite to the volvo day out! lucky me! but I cannot go my car is very broken.
the main problem is it is leaking a rediculous amount of oil. I am putting in 1L about once a week.
the problem is the oil only seems to come out when the car is reving, ie on a motorway I can loose 1L in about 400miles. but when the engine is stopped only a drip, because the whole back end of the engine is full of oil I cant see where it is comming from, and if I clean it then drive it the oil must drop onto the drive shaft and get splattered all over again.
does anyone have any possible causes? I have looked at the cams and the filter and these all seem fine. the only place I am not sure about is the main seal on the crank (behind the flywheel)
I have got to get a new gearbox and fit it but I would like to know where the leak is so I can do it at the time, I did think of pressurising the engine through the breather to 1-4 bar and see if oil or air blows out somewhere but I dont think that this will work.

any suggestions as I left a massive lake at a customers the other day because I had been up the motorway to them and when I stopped it all ran out of the sump cover!!

can someone please tell me how to remove the auxiliary drivebelt tensioner assembly?

I have a replacement to fit as mine siezed and threw the belt onto the road, I didn't notice until I tried to turn a corner and nearly had a close encounter with a cow!

The replacement has a large threaded hole in the centre of the rear of the spring housing and a small sticky-out bit on the rear of the casing but no other obvious means of mounting.

So I'm assuming that the engine has a threaded bar sticking out which the unit screws on to? The sticky-out bit seems to be a key to stop the unit unscrewing? but neither the key nor the rear of the unit can be accessed when it's mounted...so how do I undo it?

I thought about using an oil filter wrench to unscrew the thing but I dont wanna risk damaging the mounting???

Haynes didn't want to reveal the secret of the drivebelt tensioner and so their instructions for removal are "unbolt the auxiliary drivebelt tension from the engine"! Great work there boys...

we have a 2001 V40 with a *new* problem: the back windshield wiper does not make full contact with the window. We've replaced the wiper arm once, and that worked for a short time. Then we replaced the actual blade, but that didn't help. It seems like it would be a simple adjustment - more tension in the arm would = greater surface contact with the window. However, the mechanic charged an incredible amount to take the arm off and replace it. Is there some easy way to make this adjustment? a special screwdriver and a couple of minutes seems like the key, but maybe since it's a volvo it's 3 days in the shop with computer diagnosticsjavascript:emoticon(':blush:') thanks

Hello folks,Its my first time here!!! There is some great advice at this forum, thank you.
My terminology may be foreign as I am from england! 1999 v40 1.8. petrol.
Problem 1 is a clicking noise when using standard ventilation (aircon off).The noise comes from the area under the passenger glovebox/luggage compartment. this noise disappears when the air recycling mode is selected. I have 2 choices: drive with an infuriating noise, or turn air recycling on (stops the noise) and risk suffocating!
Problem 2. vanishing illumination from heating control panel and radio buttons below! the dash is still illuminated, just the centre console isn't.
Can you imagine the frustration of driving at night with either clicking or suffocation at the back of my mind...its cold, i need heat.....and i can't see the buttons.

Ive got a non computer controlled climate air controlled (V40 2000).
The past two weeks I was in Italy on holdiay, it was rather hot and guess what decided not to work

Yep got lots of hot air and sweated my brains out.

Is it easy to check and repair or do I have to pay a fortune at a Volvo garage?

hi can anyone tell me if the seats from a 2002 v40 will fit into a 1998 v40? they do look the same but want to double check with you guys before i shell out for them?

on way to work this morning and driving in 5th Gear (Volvo V40 1999 deisel)
the gear stick drops out of 5th gear, all other gears appear to work fine!
Will not stay in 5th.

Is this easliy fixed or is this a hefty bill?

Hi, I've got a 1997 V40 TD with 5spd manual.

The problem is that it's hard to get the 1st gear in place. The problem don't seem to be with the sync rings, as it seems that I can shift to 1st ok if I lift the reverse-lock (on the stick) a bit. I'd say its either worn shifter link bushings or worn engine mounts that's causing this, but I decided to swap the bushings first.

The problem is that I'm in Brussels and my garage (and most of my tools) are in Finland (1700km away). Normally I'd just buy new bushings and swap them in. Now, as I'm living here with limited tools and no real garage, I was wonrdering if someone would have good links to some material on the web about this linkage. Just got this Volvo and have yet to find good material for it on the web. With real cars (not talking about brand but age, 40+ years of age) it's easy to find good material on the web... ...hope it's a case with newer drives too.

So, I'd appreceate greatly a couple of links. Thanks in advance!

I am a happy owner (at least so far...) of a 2001 Volvo V40 T4 (phase II), and I'm new to this site.

From all the good discussions I've seen, I hope some of you are able to provide some info on a problem I've got;

My cylinder head gasket is blown (coolant consumtion, misfiring in cold condition + high HC content in coolant). No work is yet been done on the car, and so I'm unsure of the extent of damage. Hopefully it is only the gasket....

However, in case my cyl.head is gone, I hope some of you can give hints about how to get hold of a new (or re-conditioned), resonably priced cylinder head. Just want to be prepared...

Hi, I have a HU-405. How can I connect for example a mp3-player to it? Is it possible to modify a 8-pin DIN connector-cable? Other suggestions?

My key keeps getting stuck in the ignition, it won't turn in order to start the car, i've used wd40 and if i wriggle it and ease it then after i while it turns.
I've been told that i need to buy a complete new steering colunm , i really hope this isn;t right??
the key goes in the ignition ok, it just won't turn, the key isn't really worn, and the chip is ok inside it.

My V40 has 86,000 miles on it and about 5,000 miles ago I noticed some oil drips in my garage. This past weekend I removed where I saw fresh motor oil and took the car out for a short spin: driving it hard. The oil reappeared along the right side (the side toward passenger compartment,) of the engine oil pan bolts and also had evidently sprayed on a cross member towards the rear of the car. It also looked like oil had been spraying on the exhaust also because it was discolored.

There is bracket made of hollow steel which bolts to the engine right above the oil pan. The bracket is welded to the exhaust portion of the turbocharger I think for support. This bracket and attachment bolt were also wet with oil. Above the bracket there is an about 5/8" OD tube which goes directly into the crankcase and the other end I thing goes to the turbocharger. I "assume" this is the turbo oil return line?

Where the oil return line enters the crankcase I can't see any real evidence of an oil leak, but it was somewhat wet with oil. Also, where the tube enters the engine case it was free of road dirt for about 1 1/2".

To cut to the chase is it likely the oil return line seals are leaking? Could the bolt which is attached to the hollow tube support bracket be leaking? Also, I tried to see where the line attached to the turbocharger and I can't find the attachment point. I have the Haynes manual but it still doesn't detail replacing the seals without removing the entire turbcharger. And then the manual isn't clear how to access the turbocharger oil return attachment bolts.

Please reply if you have any idea on where my suspected oil leak is and how to replace the oil return seals if they are at fault. Hopefully without removingthe turbocharger.

I have a new OEM fuel filter for my 2003 V40. I located the filter on the car, and had no problem disconnecting the inlet side (simply depress the two blue buttons on either side and it popped off). The outlet side appears to have the plastic sleeve that clips over the neck of the fuel filter, and must be squeezed to release the filter from the fuel line. Is there a special trick to this? I used a pair of needlenose pliers and could not get it to release. I also have a Grand Cherokee that has a similar fuel filter set-up, and thought this would be about the same. As I don't want to break the filter or the plastic clip I just quit and put everything back together. Granted its not due until 105K miles but I've had problems with fuel filters plugging on the Jeep and thought I'd try to be a little proactive Any help is appreciated.

when is the cam belt due to be changed on this model and can it be fitted by my local mecanic? also is there anything special in the fitting of the belt in the v40 the car has covered 84,000 miles.

we've got a baby now, and my girlfriend would prefer it if the baby seat went in the front not the back. can you turn the airbnag off? i thought some cars have a switch for this baby seat reason. oh the cars 1999

I am new in this forum. Planning to buy a 2002 model V40 and I am really concerned of the fuel consumption. Can someone advise me what is the expected consumption in Kilometers per liter?

Would appreciate additional advise on this car as to what I need to look into in order to ensure a good buy. It has run 57,000 km.

Hello this is my first post so enjoy it

Ive got a Volvo v40 1.8i GDI 115 000 KM. The Engine sounds like a diesel and after reading about a bit have come to the conclusion that this is caused by the Hyraulic Valve Lifters(HVL). Before I bought the car I did a test drive and the problem wasn´t there, the garage did an oil change before handing over the car, after this it started pinking away.
This only happens when the motors idling, low torque.

I took it back to Volvo and they replaced the HVL, it went away for a while then came back. They said it was normal for this model and not a problem.

what Id like to know is.

1. how to get rid of the noise
2. does it matter, ie will the engine mess up soon.

Hello everyone,
My V40 Bi-Fuel has done 40,000 miles and recently the engine management light came on and since then it won't idle until the engine is hot.
Error code 505 was diagnosed and a new idle air valve fitted, the error code was erased but the problem didn't go away and the light is back on.
It idles OK when the engine is hot but until then I have to dance on the pedals to keep it from cutting out.
Anyone out there had this problem and got a solution?

Over the last couple of weeks my already slack feeling gearbox has started poping out of fifth gear. Usually when I take my foot off the accelerator while going downhill.

Yesterday on a long trip back it was worse than usual and I held the gearstick in place, preventing it from popping out and fifth just dissapeared! I was left in neutral. I struggled a little and then managed to select fourth. From then on the rest of the gearbox was OK, but I still couldn't select fifth.

I'm hoping that this is just my bushings that need replacing, as I'm off to France on a family holiday on Friday. I've got the car booked in to have the bushings replaced tomorrow. Can anyone let me know if worn bushings can cause this to happen of if I have something more serious on my hands?

Hi, first post, quick question I unhooked the battery and my stereo said code so I went to the dealer and got my code, the problem is the code has a 9 in it and I can't figure out to enter a number higher than 6 on the presets any advice is appreciated thanks

My recently purchased 1997 V40 needs some work done (replacement bushes) on its front suspension that requires the front sub-frame to be dropped (according to my mechanic).

It has also developed a leaky passenger side front shock absorber - can this be replaced alone or do both front shock HAVE to be replaced? Also, would it make sense for me to ask my mechanic to do this while the sub-frame is dropped, or can I do it reasonably easily on a driveway?

Any decent (and cheap) part suppliers in the UK to recommend?

I probably sound a bit tight but I really would like to keep these initial expenses down to a minimum

Hi all. I've just purchase a 1997 V40 and now realised that the rear disc/pads ideally need changing. Is this a simple job that I can do on teh driveway? I've worked on my old 740 before, but not sure if there's any special tools required for this. I found the parts available for £48, but the garage would like to charge me £150 for the pleasure of doing it for me - surely it's a simple job. Please... :-)

Just got back from picking up my 1996 Volvo V40. Love it, drives superb. I have two questions however. Firstly it has a very simple single DIN radio cassette and I'd like to replace it with a CD player. Can I replace it with the HU-605 double din unit? I can get the spacer slot out to make a double DIN space, but wondered if the wiring was trhe same. The 605 comes from a 2003 S40.

Secondly somone mentioned that the Volvo dealers could do a quick mode (Sequence of switch presses I think) to stop the lights being permanently on. Does anyone know if this is correct and if so what the sequence is?

Hello all, i am new, please stay with me :-)

I have a W reg 2000 V40 with an SC-805 stereo, this has since broke and i was qouted £160 to get a refurb one.
So, i got one from Ebay £41 fully working with code, i think.
The one i got was a HU-605 and the connectors are different from 805, does anyone know if there is either a connector to convert them or have a wiring diagram of them i dont mind making a connector (aka bodging it)

Just wanted to say hi I have just bought a 1998 Volvo v40 1.9 cd turbo diesel this is my second car as I own a Mercedes CLK convertible which is a weekend car.

I just wanted to know if there is anyone on the forum who owns a diesel v40 turbo as I have a few questions :

1. Does your Gearstick have play even when in gear?
2. Is it normal on Volvos to have a stiff Clutch
3. Turbo I don't here a wizz from the turbo and the pickup is really slow is that normal? Can I get this checked or was there different versions of turbo diesel and how do I check mine?

Hello everyone,
I'm a V40 Bi-Fuel owner with an Idle problem and looking for help.
Briefly until the engine is warm it won't idle but runs OK if revs are kept above 800.
Fault code 505 diagnosed and idle air valve changed, but still the same.
Once the engine has warmed up it Idles OK.
Anyone had this problem and anyone got a solution.

I currently have a small leak in the fuel injection line and recently purchased a replacement from the Volvo dealership only to realise that I need a special tool to release / decouple the line. I have searched high and low on the internet and eBay but am at a loss as to which tool I should purchase.

Please could you shed some light on the issue and point me in the right direction for the correct tool. I am happy to buy it online from a reputable store or visit in person. I currently reside in Birmingham in the UK.
