Hi Guys,

Just found the forum and it looks chock full of good stuff, but I couldn't seem to find an answer to a couple of questions I have.

It may just be my ineptitude at searching...

Anywhooo..

Has anyone got a guide to changing the front wheel bearings on a V40?

I lopped the wheel, caliper and disc of the car but couldn't see what do next.

Also, my speedo has stopped working, or rather it works for a couple of miles and then stops, this is accompanied by the ABS and exclamation warning light.
Any clues how i fix that....I cant use my cruise control!!

Hello there.

I have a 53 plate V40 diesel sportlux. The ECC blower appears to be permanently on full blast irrespective of the speed setting, including AUT and 0. The heater and aircon work normally as does the temp control. I've checked the fuse (no1 on the internal fuse box) but this is fine and when swapped with the spare - no difference.

Anyone have any ideas for this. I'm reluctant to take it to a dealer.

I'm not sure if this is common knowledge but ...

After being given an unwanted lecture regarding service intervals and also being qouted silly money (£25) to have the indicator reset by my local dealer I did some surfing on the inter web and came up with the following procedure. It worked on my 2001 T4.

• Turn ignition key to position I
• Press and hold odemeter reset button
• Turn ignition key to position II (do not crank the engine)
• Wait for service indicator to blink (apprx 30 seconds)
• Release odemeter reset button
• Turn ignition key to position I

As always you do this at your own risk. It is no substitute for regular servicing.

Hello All,

My key fob stopped working and I couldn't unlock car so silly me unlocked it using key in the door and set the alarm off. Bought new batteries for key fob but still didn't work. RAC man disabled alarm so I could use car but now the indicators are going haywire. Will this stop when I get the key fob reprogrammed or is this a different problem altogether? Also is the only way to get the fob reprogrammed by going to a dealer or is there another (cheaper) way???? Please help Torsie

I needed a spare central locking remote fob for my 96P V40 (two button fob). I managed to buy a second hand fob from ebay - I was very careful and made sure i bought the exact part/serial numbered unit, all i need to do now is find out how to reprograme it. I have scanned the internet to dig out some instructions and found some that basically told me to sit in the car with the door closed (some with window open) and turn the ignition on and off five time in ten seconds. On the fifth turn leave the key on (position II), at this stage it says that the internal central locking button would start flashing. It then told me to press any button on the fob(s). I tried this last night but it didn't work.
Is this the correct way of reprogramming? Am i doing it right? Is there another way of reprogramming?
A detailed "how to" description would be fantastic and would make my life a load easier and save me a few quid by not having to go to the dealer (or is that stealer?)

Problem I've had before but can't remember how i fixed it as i did a lot of fiddling. When I unlock the car using the remote all the buttons shoot up except the drivers. When the car is locked and i open the drivers door it sets the alarm off as door not actually locked.
Help much appreciated

My 2001 (x reg) phase 2 Volvo V40 has developed a sort of 'shudder' when idling which I can feel through the gear box and can see when I look at the engine.

Also the engine warning light has come on.

The engine is the 1.8 (non-Mitisi) engine.

Any ideas what it could be.

Please can someone help. Im new to all this and i have just purchased a mint condition V40 (96) 1.8L - I love it!! But i want to keep on top of it, to do this i need to change the rear discs and pads. Im no spanner man but i want to do the maintainance myself.
Can anyone advise me how to do this or is it a complex job. Would i be correct in thinking its wheel off, caliper off, unscrew discs and then replace? Is it worth changing the wheel bearings at the same time?

HI i have a 2001 V40 115bhp Diesel.... I’ve noticed a thumping noise from the rear passenger side wheel.... sounds like the tyre has a flat spot... originally thought it was the wheel bearing but don’t they normally make a grinding noise?

Hi, i'm Macky and new to this site. I have a 2003 v40 and cannot find a tow bar wiring diagram. Are there dedicated ready wired sockets for the two 7 pin sockets. If not can I use 'scotch locks' on the exsisting wiring without damaging the numerous warning lights or computer fail safe dwvices. Any info much appreciated

Hi! If you have read my introduction about the reliability of my Volvo s40 this will not come as a surprise.
Today I collected my S40 from the garage having replaced the cat converter, a faulty rear brake caliper and a replacement bonnet catch cable, fitted because the boonet was stuck closed, also getting a new MOT Certificate.
When I collected the car I found that,when I lock the car via the remote and open the driver's door the locking sytem releases. i.e. when locked the door buttons all go down, when I use the driver's door all of the door buttons pop up...except the driver's door button which "twitches".
I have also appear to have lost the one touch window opening facility on the driver's door and perhaps dashboard lighting.
Is it me or have I really bought a lemon??

Hi, I own a 2002 American Volvo v40 1.9T. I noticed a slight exhaust smell one day and took it in to get it checked. The mechanic told me there is a very slight leak in the catalytic converter. I am ignorant about cars, but what , if anything, should I do about this? The mechanic said it is not dangerous, will not affect any emmissions test, but still he implied I should get it fixed (at his shop!).

Does this affect the car's performance? If so, how?

I am polluting too much now?

Will I pass emmissions?

I have recently purchased from a very popular internet auction site a lovely "S" reg v40 CD 1.9 turbo diesel. Immediatly decided to do a service on it and went a bought all the relevant parts, as i havn't been into cars for a while found it very awkward to get to the glow plugs and fuel filter, so my questions are:-

Do the injector pipes need to be removed to get better access to the glowplugs ???

What is the easiest way to get to the fuel filter ???

I did go to my local motor factors but they said there are no workshop manuals for the v40 diesel engine at the moment, does anybody know if i can get my hand on an alternative manual ???

I have recently purchased a V40 CDTD an love it, despite a few minor probs its a gr8 car.

Unfortunatly i do have a rip in the drivers seat which is leather so not very easy to patch up.

A salvage yard in the area has a v40 with leather interior and say the car he has had heated seat where mine does not.

Can anyone please tell me if the wiring loom is the same so i can replace my front seats with the heated ones. I know i will need the controls as well so i can get those at the same time.

connection is missing off sensor got new connection but no sure which way round the wires go any ideas. the car seems to run ok but dont think i am getting full power from turbo any advise

My head lights have been playing up for a while so i decided to change the bulbs, on closer inspection i found the problem seems to be the plastic connector block which plugs into the bulbs, one side its falling apart and the other side it seems to have melted! I've wriggled them about and now they seem fine but would like to change the connector blocks as i can see this happening again soon!

does anyone know where or if i can get the blocks?

Also im interested in swapping out my boring lights for the ones on newer V40's - can this be done?

I have a 1998 V40 that i bought last year. My key fob has never worked and recently decided to buy some new batteries. Still no luck. Does anyone know if there is a procedure with the V40 to reprogramme the fob or do i have to take it to a dealer. Can i test the fob to see if it works atall? Any help would be appreciated

I see that there are posts about this already - I need to change the bulbs for the temperature dial and the air direction dial. I have tried release the facia that surrounds these controls but it doesn't seem to want to come away from the dials/controls.

My question is - do these conrtol dials pull off? I have given them a little tug but they seem to stuck fast. I have a habbit of being a little heavy handed so I do not want to break them off and then find out that they are not removeable.

Hi, I changed the stereo in my 1997 V40 and ever since then the wipers stay on and the windows still operate when key is taken out (never used to happen)and something is draining my battery. I had the battery checked and it was fine, took the car to the local auto electic garage and he said it needed a new battery and the alternator was on its last legs, changed battery took out the stereo and the draining is still occuring, now I am told its the alternator but this still does not explain things staying on, any ideas?

I've had this car just over a week and it has suddenly (i.e. tonight) developed this problem.

When I brake to turn a corner (usually shifting down into 2nd gear) the engine just cuts on me. It hasn't done this before tonight, but then it did this twice in five minutes. It gave me quite a fright because the only clue I had was that the steering wheel wouldn't turn and the car wasn't going round the corner!!! It could have been nasty if there'd been another car near me at the time.

I did a quick Google and found a fault in the 850 and 70 series relating to the butterfly vane in the throttle getting gunked up after a while. DAK if the V40 suffers the same problem?

This car has done 120,000 miles but has full Volvo SH. I had to work hard to persuade my husband to get a Volvo and the last thing I need is more garage bills. In 2006 we spent nearly £1.5k on our 10 year old Hyundai before deciding it was time to change cars.

I really hope you guys can help!

Has anyone out there attempted to fit a LPG gas system to their Volvo V40??
I am doing some long driving each month and reckon that I can reduce the fuel bill if I fit an LPG fuel system to my R reg V40 petrol estate. Of course to keep the cost down I want to buy the fit and fit it myself, problem is I dont know much about my volvo (yet) and have only performed some belt changes etc so not had to mess with the engine much.
Questions that I need answers on :
Does my motor use a catalyst ??
Does it therefore have an oxygen sensor??
Will this mean a closed loop system would be better for performance/mpg??
Does my car have an electronic engine management unit ? and if so can I have it tuned to ensure there is no loss in performance as a result of fitting the LPG system?

Ans of course the biggest question, what possible can of worms am I opening trying to do the job myself ???? [/B][B]

I have a preowned 2002 v40 station wagon. I need to replace the low beam bulb but I can't seem to figure out how the clamp works to release the battery. I can't find anything in the ownver's manual.

Love the car--can't stand this battery set-up!

We just purchased a 2000 V40 wagon. The previous owner had removed the roof rails and we want to replace them. Any suggestions on a source for used or aftermarket, or what type to buy? We want to carry our bikes up top if there is something available to mount them. We have seen other cars with rails and crossbars, and strips on the roof. Any info appreciated.

I am no longer getting any air blown through the vents in my car - I can not hear the blower working and turning the speed selector does nothing. I have also noted that the aircon button light is blinking/flickering in both the on and off possition. It happend the other day but when I hit a speed bump it started working again. Today I have tried the same think when it stopped working but no joy.

Hello. This is my second post, and I am hoping someone might be able to tell me what gap measurement to use for the plug on my 2000 V40 turbo. I took my car to Midas (unfortunately) to have some work done, and the mechanic there told me to gap my plugs at .028. When I removed the old plugs, if the true gap is .028, the old plugs had never been gapped at all.

I'd appreciate any thoughts any one has, and, thank you in advance.

In first place i´d like to say Hi to all V40 owner´s.

I´m a happy man, because the dream came true, i´m a happy new owner of a 2000 Black Beauty V40 1.9 Cdr (115 HP).

But, there always a but, my treasure already killed me twice in 24 Hours, I explain.
I bought the van in thursday, and put her in Volvo in the friday to the 90.000 Km check up, they say that everithing´s alright, because the van have no problem.
So, Saturday pick up the van for a ride, 15 minutes after reading it, in the highway, i was going at 140 Km/H i started to note that the power and rpm of the van is lacking off. The stopped at 2000rpm????? I have to go at 40 Km/H to home!!!

Today i went to the repair dealer and asked what the *?0# is going in the engine???

They look, they look, and foun no solution, is this normal, not even the Volvo people can´t fix the problem??

A few minutes later a young mechanic reaches the car and says:

Check the O-Ring and the buterfly, they did that, they squezze a litle more and miracle, no extra charge, no need for any kind of material and the car runs like Beep Beep.

has anyone had the wonderful experience of change the front bush on the rear suspension trailing arm. had a quick look and spray with wd40 tonight but the bolt look well hard to access & undo (as the guy at the garage said)

had car 6 years and this is the first mot failure at 107000 miles.

As is evident from my login I am a 440 owner and proud of it. I am quite active in the 400 series forum but know little of other models.

My friend has offered me a 1998 1.8 V40 with around 80k miles on the clock, it's history is well known his father had it from new and cossetted it until about a year ago when he sold it to my friend (his son), a couple of weeks ago it started running rough and the engine management light came on. I told him of all the mitsubishi GDI stories I'd read on the forum but he told me the place he had taken it had said it was NOT fitted with the mitsubisi engine, it is presently in a main dealer with no compression on one cylinder having a "dodgy valve" sorted out -this is all I know other than it is in mint condition.

My friend being a man of zero mechanical knowledge is bothered by this and has lost faith in the car and would like to sell it when fixed, me however a man who has pushed £200 pound bangers through 100's of thousands of miles is looking to go up in the world. I have always admired the V40 thinking it was a good looking estate.

I was just wondering if it hasn't got the mitsubishi engine what has it got? is this engine OK? does it suffer from valve problems? and what else should I be checking?

It's quite a basic model and he's mentioned about £1500.

I am interested in the above vehicle for business use to replace my tired Citroen Picasso. The advertised price is 1.7k. Does anybody have any thoughts on potential problems / benefits?

I have a 2004 V40 and the left/left headlight lamp burned out. It is directly in front of the battery. I don't have a service manual. help!

greetings.............ok heres the problem,my battery completely died on me last week,i jump started the wagon,inputted the radio code,but ever since,the engine management light has been coming on at irregular times,usually at low speed or braking from high speed,also my rear wiper takes notions if its gonna work or not.........anyone any ideas ?

Firstly Hi to all on the forum. Newbie here in Dublin.

I have a V40 with the GDI engine. Its an 03 model with almost 40,000 miles on the clock. Up until yesterday it has always driven beautifully without as much as a misfire or stutter of any kind.
Yesterday it started first turn as always and I proceeded to drive it out of the driveway and down the road.
Having stopped at the first juction I took off fine in first BUT as soon as I went into second gear I lost power as though I wasnt in gear.
The engine was still running but I could not accelerate as each time I stopped and took off I again lost power.
Turned around and tried to get back home but now the engine was cutting out when every 50 feet. It felt like there was no petrol in in the tank although it was showing 120 - 0. Got a petrol can and put 5 litres into the tank.
Thought it might take a few turns of the key to get the fuel to work its way through the system but I got nothing. Battery is stronger than I would have expected as I must have tried to start it 50 times or more over the evening.

No warning lights of any kind, engine management etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as the only Volvo dealer near me is worse than D!ck Turpin (at least D!ck Turpin wore a mask). My last service cost €600 in Sept of last year.

i am going to look at a v40 estate today and i was wondering if anyone could let me know what i should be looking for, ie which bits go wrong,

also what size engine does the si have
