Hi, as you can see i am new to the site and new to the volvo GDI problems.
At the moment the car won't start at all, it just turns over and back fires, it has done this before but then will run ok for a day, then back to not starting, i have drained the fuel thinking it was cotaminated and checked the timing. there was only one fault on the engine management, miss fire cyl 3. can anyone help as i dont want to take it to the dealers and have them put loads of new parts on it that it does't need at great exspense, thanks.

Engine with 120K miles has blown due to loss of coolant on the highway. Cyclinder head probably damaged $3-5k to fix at dealer. Any suggestions? Anyone need a parts car?

Can anyone tell me how to deactivate the headlight wipers on a 2002 V40. I can see that many share this problem, driving with one or both of them stuck in an upright position. I'd like to bring them down and deactivate them. I will never need this feature and I'm sure of it. I also have two other quastions. How do you add or check automatic transmission fluid? This is not explained in the manual and I couldn't find a dipstick for this purpose. Finally I would like to know if I can add/use a good quality coolant made by another manufacturer. My manual tells me to use Volvo coolant only. Is this true?

Does anyone know if 2001 V40 (1,9d) manual gearbox fits for 2004 V40 (1,9d 115 hp)? Estonian Volvo service says they can not repair this kind of gearbox, because there are no parts for this type of gearbox and new one costs 3000 euros.

HI, I currently have a Volvo v40 1998 with tyre size 195/55/r15. I have seen some alloys for sale off a 2003 V40 tyre size 195/60/r15. Will these wheels fit my volvo?? They both have the same stud fitment and diameter, I am worried about the difference in tyre size - does it matter? Any advice gladly recieved. thanks Paul

Hi - I need to replace the steering rack on my 2002 V40 (Diesel).

Any tips?
- Can I slide the rack out the wheel arch or will I need to
remove some suspension components?
- How do I align the new rack?
- Any special tools needed?
- How is the steering column attached to the rack?

I have a Volvo V40 1.8i which has suddenly developed an alarm fault.

When I lock the car via the remote locking facility on the key fob, the doors lock OK but the indicators flash continuously. I now have to lock the car via the lock on the driver's door (thereby by-passing the alarm).

Any ideas?

Recently my Volvo has started shaking when i accelerate. Especially up hills. The shaking goes away when i step off of the accelarator pedal. At first it was only at 50+ miles per hour but now it's happening in as little as 30+ miles per hour.

Need help.

I have a 1996 V40. The rear doors will not shut properly. The lock does not locate properly in the catch such that even when the door appears to be shut the door can be pushed open from the inside. The locks mechanisms appear to work okay. I took them out, and oiled all the mechanisms etc. I cannot adjust the catches because they are screwed in incredibly tightly and I am scared of stripping the allen key heads. I am trying to adjust the door hinges, but without much success. Very frustrated. Can't use the car for fear of arriving to find all the kids have fallen out on the way. Any advice would be really really appreciated. This is my first posting, and I am a bit desperate.

I have a problem that left headlight of my Volvo V40 2000 1.9 D doesn't work. On instrument lights the bulb appears after few minutes than I starts to drive. I checked Voltage on left headlight and it is 8-9 volts. Right one has 12 V. Of course bulbs are OK and I use those 12V 55W Xeon bulbs. Beam lights work fine.

My very first post here so I hope I've done everything OK. Wondering if anyone can help me.

I have a 2000 W reg V40, on which the handbrake has just started to stick. I've taken the linkage off on the rear brake calliper and sprayed it with WD40, and it frees it up ok for a month or so, then it starts sticking again. The cable itself is free. Does anyone know what is causing the problem or how to fix it permanently? My local garage said the V40 is an excellent car, the only problem they really see on them is a sticking handbrake. 4 months after the MOT it starts happening to mine!

The only thought I have is to completely replace the rear callipers. There is a volvo breakers yard local to me. How do I know these would last though??

I have just purchased a 2002 V40 1.8i sport and wondered when it is recomended to change the cambelt? Our car has done 73,000 miles and I just wanted to know if it will need doing yet - the garage told me it wasn't until 90k or 8 years old but I wanted to make sure to be safe.

Hi, I Drive a 1997 Volvo V40 1.8, the following dials have all just died whilst driving:
Speedometer, Rev Counter, Temp Gauge and Fuel Gauge,

all interior electrics still work, Back Lighting for dashboard, interior lights and stereo
The car still starts and drives can I ask what has caused the lost of the instruments

The other day I pressed the unlock button on the key fob of my v40 whilst my wife had already got the button pressed (thinking that it was already unlocked) Now the button is stuck in the depressed position and I can't open the boot. I'm sure I've done this before but I can't remeber how I got out of it. Can anyone help?

Hi.I have a v40,2000se,automatic,1998
I have a warning light which comes on intermittently and I don't know what it is as I don't have a manual.
It is a green triangle with a y that is upside down (looks like a brake pedal) and it is to the right of the arrow which lights when you are in 3rd gear.
I have checked all the fluids and they seem ok.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm new here and just bought a '98 V40 T4 w/120k. It needs new tires right away, and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend some good 4-season tires?

I have recently had my Volvo serviced for the first time by a non Volvo Garage. They changed the gasket on my Gearbox that was leaking oil plus they changed the Engine oil.
My question is: Does this volvo have a separate oil supply from the engine?
My car is manual
They charged me for filling the Gear box oil and engine oil as 2 separate jobs.
Should I trust them?

I want a reliable and reasonably economical car to tow my boat on a single axle trailer - it weighs under a tonne.

Hello, I am new member Jim from Kenilworth in the heart of England! I am now on my fifth Volvo (V70), hence you will gather that I am a bit of a fan!

My wife's V40 handbook (2003) says that the front passenger seat height can be adjusted by a dealer. My local Volvo dealer has quoted £50 to do it, which I think is extortionate, particularly as I shall want to put it back at some point!

I have looked under the seat and can see the relevant nuts but realistically they can only be accessed by taking the seat out. I cannot see how to do this and secondly, I am scared of triggering the airbags if I disconnect/reconnect the wiring harness.

I would appreciate some advice on both points, please - how to get the seat out and how to avoid an accident with the airbags.

I have a question regarding an HU-415 radio in a 2002 V40 1.9. This morning when I started the car, the radio was asking me for what seemed to be a password or unlock code of some kind. I believe it needed 4 characters.

I guessed a few times for the obvious ones (1234, 0000, etc)...which I now know was a mistake.

I came across this thread here (http://www.volvo-forums.com/t7040-entering-security-code-for-hu-605.htm) which is very similar to my problem. I just need the correct code for my model radio and a little guidance on how to get the radio out of "off" mode.

Any help would be appriciated, and thanks in advance!

I have read about problems with blower,resistor on ac/ECC.My Volvo V40 -02have ECC and my problem is that the blower only works on speed 4 and 5 even if I wont it go of (and 1,2,3)
Can anyone tell me whats wrong.- I think when the switch is of then it can not be the resistor.Am I wrong??

hi,just bought a 2000 x v40,the problem is when i turn the aircon on the engine idles up and down (750 -1000rpm ) also i can feel a slight shudder on dash and gear lever .the car has done 160,000miles motorway miles ,it's got full volvo service history .when i drive everything is fine ,just staitionary and when i turn the aircon off it's run very smooth.is this normal for v40's.

Hi, everyone. I've got a problem -- actually my wife has a problem, and it's fallen in my lap!

She has parked the 2001 V40 to go to a meeting, and she can't remove the key from the ignition switch. She has the car in Park, but it appears that the button on the shift lever is not releasing properly. Could this be the problem?

She has tried moving the shift lever, driving forward and reverse, and various other things to get the lever button to release and to get the key out, but nothing seems to work.

Any ideas? Anyone had a similar problem?

hello everyone!i just buyed an 1997 V40 diesel,and i can see cleary a lot of black smog when accelerate.the oil level seems to be normal,i just changed and the filter.
can anybody tell me what could be please?

This is great, free advice from clever people. I have decided to cut out the volvo garage, as last month they charged me over £650.00 labour just for fitting a few bits and bobs (most of it I wouldn't of been able to do myself). Anyway, my gearbox is making a squealing noise when in 5th and I have read that it could be low oil, so I thought I would have a go at topping it up myself, however I am unable to find any info anywhere on how this is done. If anyone knows how to do it or where I could find the instructions I would most greatful.

My left headlight was out so I changed the bulb but this didn't solve problem. Checked fuse, that was ok. Took car to electrician as advised by local garage. Picked up car to find that there was no charge for work as they said headlight was working ok. I'm scratching my head about now. Thanked the shop, and drove off.

2 hours later headlight not working again. Contacted electrician shop who told me they had started car 4 times and light came on every time. They advised that I would need to find garage with a diagnostic machine.

Has anyone else had a headlight with mind of its own and if so what is remedy???

Anyone know how to get the driveshaft splines back into the splines in the front hubs?
Have taken off and replaced front hubs and bearings, after a trip to a garage for a bench press, and now can't get either the old or new ones back on the car!!!
Is there some fancy tool out there or have I missed a point in the Haynes manual?

I am trying to remove the headlamp unit to fix the reflector back in place as I accidentally dislodged it when fitting the plastic electrical connector back on one of the bulbs. I managed to get the unit completely unbolted (also involves removing indicator unit) so it will move around but I cannot the unit completely free. It looks like I have to remove the bumper to do this? I'm hoping I don't - can anyone help - is there something I've missed?

2000 V40 1.9 check engine light on. Car runs fine, replaced oil & filter, plugs, air filter, how do I reset it? I tried the same process I use to reset the service light
but it would not clear the check engine light. any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance.

Hi Guys......this car is driving me nuts !!! It idles pefectly and revs perfectly untill it hits 4k.....just wont rev over that limit?!!! I know they suffer from coke problems......just done the decoke and cambelt...my god !! there was some s**t in there !! really thought tt would sort it......Just the same.....can't get any codes up again although there was a P0190 fuel rail pressure senser circuit malfunction before I decoked it ........ filter has been changed Any ideas ? Thank you very much i advance for any help !!!

Hello I have a Volvo V40 1.8i Estate with a Mitsubushi GDI Engine with an erratic tick over, in the first 30 seconds it ticks over fine but then starts fluctuating between 200rpm and 1000rpm. Have cleaned the throttle housing and used injector cleaners but still erratic. Any suggestions on how to solve this problem much appreciated. Many Thanks Rob.
