Autocross - Saturday, May 1, 2010

The Autocross event is new this year.
Sacramento Area VCOA member, Mark Baldwin is diligently organizing this event.

Meeting location:
3905 Alert Road

The event will be held at the City of Sacramento operated “Emergency Vehicle Operations Center,” near Douglas Avenue and Mather Blvd. at Mather Air Force Base adjacent to Rancho Cordova and about 10 miles to the southeast of downtown Sacramento.

Meeting time:
7:30A - Drivers meeting

On Saturday, the event will start at 7:30 AM with a drivers meeting, and then the participants will be separated into A & B teams, with the A team starting at 8:00 AM, the B team taking over later in the morning and the entire event concluding by 1:00 PM.

Registration & Fees:
You can pre-register on the Golden Gate VCOA's (GGVCOA) website and save some money (you must have a PayPal account-- be sure to bring your PayPal receipt with you to Sacramento as proof of payment).

The pre-registration fee is $20 / vehicle for VCOA members and $25 / vehicle for non-members.

12th Annual Davis Car Show and Swap Meet - Sunday, May 2, 2010

Now in its 12th year, the Annual Davis Car Show & Swap Meet is one of the larger events on the West Coast,
drawing 100+ members from Southern CA all the way up to the state of Washington and across the Sierras to
the state of Nevada.

All Volvos are welcome whether they be a work-in-progress, a daily driver, showroom beauty, or a highly
modified (race) car.

Volunteers are also needed for the following:

Friday, April 30th (Autocross):
-Set up cones, test drive course

Saturday, May 1st (Autocross):

-Gate Worker: Collect entry fees from participants in the morning

-Checklist Inspector: Make sure that participants vehicles are properly equipped and that rules of the track are understood and followed.

-Event Marshals: Assure that safety functions in and around the course are followed at all times.

-Track Volunteers: Maintain the course and coordinate the drivers. Typically the A team will help the B team and vice versa.

Sunday, May 2nd (Davis Car Show and Swap Meet):

This is the most visited Volvo event held in Northern California every year. For us to be successful, we need your help! We are seeking volunteers on May 2nd who are willing to help us set up and oversee a number of functions. We are asking volunteers to serve in 90 minute blocks for these posts:

-Gate/Parking (direct drivers to correct parking area or collect entry fees and hand out registration packets)
7 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. (four people needed)
8:15 to 9:30 a.m. (four people needed)
9:30 to 10:30 a.m. (four people needed)

-Concessions (sell donuts/coffee on early shifts, lunch on later shifts)
7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. (three people needed)
8:30 to 10:00 a.m (three people needed)
10:00 to 11:30 a.m. (three people needed)
11:30 to 1:00 p.m. (three people needed)

-Registration/Raffle (sell raffle tickets and chapter merchandise, accept People's Choice ballots)
7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. (one person needed)
8:30 to 10:00 a.m (two people needed)
10:00 to 11:30 a.m. (two people needed)
11:30 to 1:00 p.m. (three people needed; can use one additional from 12 Noon to 1 p.m. for ballot tallying work)

-Photographer (takes high-quality digital photos for chapter website, inclusion in Rolling article on Meet)
9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (one person needed)

Hi Everyone,

Join long time VCOA club member Jon Manji to experience a lecture and demonstration based on his long experience on how to prepare your car for a car show. With Spring ready to Spring, and car club events and shows just weeks away, this is a great opportunity to learn what judges are looking for when evaluating your “rolling” vehicle entry against others. Jon is a member of many car clubs and has also served as a judge at various car shows for years, so please come and take advantage of his knowledge and experience. A few Volvo’s will be available after the lecture to allow Jon to demonstrate his teachings on actual vehicles.

Hi Everyone,

Our first event of the year will be with Peter Mausolf at Volvo Independent Service in Rancho Cordova. Mark Baldwin is organizing this event as he did last year.

This will be a Q&A type focus where you can fire any question you have to Peter that you might have on front wheel drive Volvos or post-'75 rear wheel drive Volvos, (This event is open to everyone however!).

As he did last year, Peter may put your car on a lift to better demonstrate his answers to your questions or to make comments from a visual perspective.

"My name is Jim Haughey, owner of K-Pax Racing. I am a VCOA club member and own a Volvo repair business near San Jose, California . We race two S60R Volvos in the Speed World-Challenge GT racing series. You may have heard of us, if not, look in the September/October edition of Rolling Magazine on page 15 for our current story.

We will be at Laguna Seca Raceway, near Monterey California, October 8 thru 11. We race on Sunday October 11 at 2:45 pm. We have won two races so far this year, beating Porsches, Vipers, Mustangs and Corvettes. Laguna Seca looks to be a good track for the Volvos. Trying not to wave our flag too much, but these are the fastest Volvos in the world!

I’d like to invite any club members out to the track and if there is sufficient interest we can gather the VCOA members at our paddock area and have a talk for the members, let them get a close look at the cars, maybe sit in the cars, show everyone our trailers, motors, transmissions, meet the drivers and have a good time. The reason I am writing is to see if your local chapter has any interest in coming to Laguna Seca for our race. I am also extending invitations to the Golden Gate Chapter and perhaps some local dealers.

Our plan for the day is to arrive at 8:00 am, and park in the area designated by the event organizers and enjoy looking at all the cars on display until the event ends at 10:30 am.

Typically, European exotics and well restored pre-75 cars are displayed. However, this will be an opportunity to display nicely maintained older Volvo’s. They should stand up well and draw attention from many of the other drivers. If your Volvo is not the best of the best, don’t despair! This will still be a fun opportunity for VCOA members to get together and to see a wide variety of European cars on display.

Following the Show and Shine at the Quarry Ponds Shopping Center, Volvo owners will be invited to take a drive, as organized by the Euro Sunday crew to a destination to be announced. We may also wish to organize Volvo owners for an independent drive and lunch as an option.

Jeff Selling’s family has set up this event for our enjoyment.

We will meet at 10:00 AM sharp for a 30 minute docent-led tour of the Indian Museum (we recommend trying to arrive by 9:30 AM). Afterward, we can continue to tour the museum on our own, or go next door to tour Sutter’s Fort and get a sense as to the origins of the Gold Rush and meet volunteers in period dress.

By 12:00 noon to 12:30 PM, we will meet in a shaded backyard area behind the Indian Museum to have lunch. There will be tables and chairs.

Based on a poll of the leadership team, we need to endeavor to make or buy and bring some cold lunch items for our feast. There is a refrigerator that we can use at the Indian Museum.

Since we do not know how many people might want to attend, please send an RSVP as soon as feasible, and let us know what you would like to bring, and in what quantities, so that we can get a sense for whether we will have a “well balanced diet.”
If you are bold, please feel free to bring a portable BBQ if you are willing to cook some “hot” dogs for us. Jeff Molander will update every one as to our “food status” in a week or two.

I recently bought a 1984 240 wagon in Oregon,planning to drive across the country. I drove it around for a week, everything seemed fine with the car. I made it to San Francisco without any problems, but it broke down on my way to Los Angeles. I had the fuel pump relay replaced, and got to LA. It sat for a few hours and then I tried to drive it. It would start fine but then stall. I drove around a few blocks and every time I stopped it would stall again. I brought it to a mechanic here in LA who told me that the wiring harness is bad, there's a leak in the power steering system, and the dust boot is collecting oil. They repaired the wire connections to the mass air flow sensor, and cleaned meter connectors, and the car seemed to be driving normally again. Now it's stalling again and there's water coming out of the tail pipe. Are these all connected? I love 240's and was very excited about this car, but am wondering now if it's worth it to have it fixed. Would a new wiring harness fix the stalling? Does anyone know of mechanics, or Volvo enthusiasts that would want to buy it and fix it up? It only has 165000 miles on it, the body is good shape.

Last year, we had a “Volvo Day at IKEA” with a car show and Swedish trivia game.
This year, with the event scheduled between Swedish Day on June 6th and Midsummer Celebrations on June 20th, we thought it would be more fitting if we expanded the event to “Swedish Day at IKEA” with all Volvos and Saabs invited to the car show and Swedish-themed “treasure hunt / great race” type game!

As before, we will meet in the IKEA parking lot (~row D) in West Sacramento close to the entrance:

Following introductions, we will have an opportunity to chat, enjoy Sweden’s finest automobiles, and share information on Volvo and Saab lore.

At about 11:30 AM to noon or so, we will move inside IKEA to enjoy a buffet lunch upstairs in a conference room that we have reserved next to IKEA’s buffet. During the lunch, we would like to discuss club events, and the possibility of the Sacramento Chapter working with the Golden Gate Chapter to expand our Spring Davis event next year to either a VCOA Regional or West coast meet. All of the ideas that we will generate or explore about Davis will be passed on to CJ Yother, Golden Gate’s new President.

Following this at about 1:00 or 1:30 PM, we will begin the Swedish-themed “treasure hunt / great race” type game that will include questions and clues written on placards that will be placed throughout IKEA’s second floor. Those who complete this multi-staged game first will win!

IKEA can be reached from Interstate 80 in West Sacramento by taking the Reed Rd. exit (just to the north of the store) and going East. From there, IKEA Ct. will be your first right (going South) IKEA is toward the end of this short street as you work your way Southwest.
If in doubt, pull up driving directions from your location on an online directions / map website.

This event is free of charge for participants, with the exception that you will need to cover the cost of an inexpensive lunch (the Swedish meatballs are great).

The Golden Gate Chapter and the Sacramento Chapter are teaming up for another event-- a scenic drive to the historic town of Locke on Saturday, May 23, 2009!

Bring your brick out for a drive!

On May 23rd take a drive through the Delta to "Al Place" with the Golden Gate VCOA. This wonderful drive takes you through the Delta by way of the many levees, making ferry crossings to reach the destination of historic Locke California. Locke was founded in 1915 after a fire broke out in the Chinese section of nearby Walnut Grove. The Chinese who lived in that area decided that it was time to establish a town of their own. A committee of Chinese merchants, led by Lee Bing, Chan Hing Sai, Tom Wai, Chan Dai Kee, Ng So Hat, Chan Wai Lum, Chow Hou Bun, and Suen Dat Suin was formed. They approached land owner George Locke and inquired if they could build on his land. An agreement was reached. The town was laid out by Chinese architects and industrious building ensued. The founding of Lockeport, later 'Locke', was a reality. By 1920 Locke stood essentially as you'll see it now. Al's Place which is our destination, better known as "Al the Wops" was founded in 1934 after having been a Chinese restaurant since 1915 becoming the only non Chinese business in town.

This event will start with a drive, and culminate with a lunch at Al's Place in Locke. We will meet near Cordelia Junction and take Hiway 12 out through Rio Vista. Just outside of Rio Vista traveling north on Hiway 160 to Locke CA. Wander about (it's a small town) take some photos, and grab a bite to eat. Once we have had lunch we are taking drive on the levee roads.

Here is some additional information:

We are meeting at the IKEA in Emeryville @ 9:00am leaving at 9:15 for the Starbucks located at 4470 Central Way, Fairfield, CA‎. Exit 41 off highway 80, turn right on Pittman and right again on Central Way once you've exited. The Starbucks is on the right. Once there we will meet up with those from the North Bay and continue the drive to Locke from there. We are leaving the Starbucks at 10:15 to head to Locke. We are going out highway 12 to highway 160 and then into Locke. Once in Locke we'll meet up with the Sacramento Chapter, eat lunch at Al's and go for a drive afterwards.

-Take the Pocket Rd / Meadowview exit from I-5 (about 10 miles south of downtown Sacramento)

-Go east and take second right at about 0.3 miles to Freeport Blvd.

-Turn right (south) at Freeport Blvd (2-lane Rd.) and drive another
1.0 mile south to the Freeport City limits.

-Drive another 0.6 miles south along Freeport Blvd. to a parking area
on the west side of the Rd. (adjacent to a white sign against the levy
that says (Freeport Marina). This is the location where we will
congregate and then embark to Locke by crossing the Freeport
Bridge which is only another 0.1 miles down the road.

Hi Everyone,

If you are in California, you are probably already aware of the Annual Davis Car Show & Swap Meet (which is currently in its eleventh year) and Track Day at Thunderhill Raceway in Willows.

This year, the events are scheduled on Sunday & Monday, April 26-27, 2009.

What you may not already know is that the Golden Gate VCOA (GGVCOA) recently canceled some events due to economics and lack of interest, including the April Track Day.

The GGVCOA is also going through a transition period and announced new leadership. CJ Yother has stepped in as the GGVCOA President while **** Thomas stepped in as Vice President. If you are in the area, please send them a warm welcome!

The new leadership is trying to resurrect the April Track Day and needs to hear from you if you are interested in running.

What are car shows all about, and what’s the best way to prepare to attend one? With the car show season starting soon, please join us for this overview of the background and structure of car shows. We'll also cover some evaluation techniques that you can use on your own car to determine your strategy to show it at its best. Car show newcomers and veterans alike will find the material presented in this class invaluable in preparing to participate in and enjoy future shows.

This is not a "How to Restore Your Volvo" or "How to Detail Your Volvo" class; the focus will be on providing a summary of how shows are typically structured, including judging procedures, and how you can evaluate your car so that your time and resources are spent wisely. While this class is geared toward Volvos and typical Volvo Club of America/Volvo Sports America
(VCOA/VSA) meet formats, the information to be presented applies to all types of car shows.

Long-time VCOA/VSA member Jon Manji will be conducting the class, which is based on his car show experience. He has served as Field Captain for two VCOA national meets and performed other judging duties for many other meets and shows.

Peter Mausolf will handle questions on all fronts regarding repair and maintenance issues for Volvo cars built from 1975 forward. This includes the 200, 700 and 900 rear wheel drive series plus all manner of front wheel drive Volvos from 1993 forward.

Volvo Independent Service was established in 1994. Peter Mausolff purchased the business in 2004 after being in the automotive service industry since 1973. Peter's most recent prior experience included Shop Foreman of San Francisco BMW and Manager of Auto Analyst of San Francisco. Volvo Independent Repair Service specializes in all phases of Volvo service from scheduled maintenance, safety checks, pre-purchase inspections, computer diagnostics, transmission, and engine repairs.

From HWY 50, take Sunrise Blvd. south and turn left (east) onto Monier Circle. Volvo Independent Service is located on the right side and is visible from the street.

The SVS technical session will discuss the care, tuning and maintenance of pre-1975 Volvo's with B16, B18 or B20 engines.

The session will be headed by Robert Marcello, the original founder of SVS (12/80), an independent repair facility. He is also a Master Technician as defined by Volvo. In addition, Robert is a current member of, and has won the VISTA (Volvo International Service Technician Association) competition in 1978.

Robert will discuss how to keep these Volvo's tuned and running safely with today's fuels and motor oils. He will also discuss engine rebuilds, A/C kit installations, etc. and handle questions from the audience.

Robert would also like to have subjects and questions from interested participants beforehand, so that he can prepare. Please forward all questions to Jeff Molander, as listed below.

During the afternoon, we will find a location for lunch and then break up to visit local auto dismantlers and Pick 'n Pulls of your choice.

Speed Ventures has two big track day weekends coming up. On September 20 and 21 they're
running the Full Competition Course at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana (formerly Cal
Speedway). This is the "Roval" track layout with Turn 1 and Turn 2 of the Super Speedway
banked and linked to the Infield Road Course. It's a split morning and afternoon
schedule so you can drive in the morning and still have your afternoon at the beach or
sleep late and drive the afternoon sessions, or both.

On Saturday the 20th at Auto Club Speedway, there's a designated low car-count run group
for high value vehicles (Ferrari, Lambo, other Supercars, etc.). Half as many cars on
track, strict passing rules but with a max of 17 cars in the group, tons of wide-open
track.

The weekend after that there's a 3-day at Buttonwillow (Fri/Sat/Sun Sept. 26-28) with a
different course configuration on Saturday (the high-speed 18a configuration). For the
Buttonwillow event, Aaron is still offering group discounts to drivers who can bring in
at least 5 registrations.

Both of these events are selling well and some run groups are likely to sell out soon.

-If your Saab does NOT leak fluids (you know - that black wet stuff under the car on the driveway) you can park and EXHIBIT your car on the PLAZA. There is room for about 10 or 12 cars. The rest of us will meet and park in the parking lot.

-We will have a guided tour at about 10:30A with lunch on-your-own at a local destination that will include an interesting drive through the hills.

--Those leaving from there can take Greenville Road to Highway 580 and hit the freeway East or West.
--We have also invited the Sacramento Volvo Club to attend and they can scoot home on 5 after lunch...

September is not the high season in this part of the foothills, so we shouldn’t have lots of competition for parking spots.

We will be upfront about this: there are no Volvos on display at the Museum, other than the ones that members will be driving to this event. But if you want to shore up your knowledge of automotive history and learn about the technological ancestors of your Volvo, this is the event for you. The Museum is biased towards early Ford products (Model T & Model A), but since Ford owns Volvo, I guess that's the tie-in, if you need one. Seriously, if you want to learn about automotive history, this is the best place in the Sacramento Valley to do so.

We will have a reserved parking area outside the museum for our members, where "Volvo" will definitely be spoken. After the museum tour, which should take about 90 min., attendees can visit the Museum's gift shop and/or gather outside in our reserved area and meet fellow Volvo enthusiasts. Around Noon, we will adjourn to a nearby restaurant for lunch. Lunch is optional and is a separate cost from the museum visit-- restaurant choice will be by popular vote after the tour, please bring your location suggestions, we'll bring ours.

We will be receiving a special discounted admission rate, the maximum charge is $5/person. A local VCOA event, cheap (cheaper than going to the movies!), and it won't take a whole day. What more could you ask for?

Important note: So that the Museum may have enough docents on hand for our tour, you must RSVP by Sunday, July 13, 2008 to: Jon Manji or Jeff Molander. Mother’s Day EuroSunday

Sacramento’s EuroSunday Plus took place this Mother’s Day weekend and the featured marquee involved the beloved British vehicles. Even with the holiday, we were 40 cars strong with half of those being British make. There were several Aston Martins ranging from the V12 Vanquish, DB9 Volante, and several Vantage V8s. Also seen were MG’s, Jaguar, Lotus, Triumph and Austin Healy. We even had two Nortons and one Triumph motorcycle find our hidden parking lot! (Our lot was so difficult to find that it forced us to change the location for our next EuroSunday in Davis. While it was ideal for having our group secluded, it also prevented folks from finding us in the first place. Thankfully Steve Prine was armed with an orange flag to wave us all down and direct us in to our spots).

Another fun story from the event had to due with the “furthest drive award!”. An Aston Martin Vantage V8 managed to come all the way from Hawaii just to attend our event =) [see the pics of the event for proof] The owner chronicled his trek for us and how much a pain the traffic was coming from Hawaii. Ok, maybe he did not drive here and he was not here just for the event but never the less it was a great story we all enjoyed. Other none British makes on hand were Ferrari, BMW, Porsche, Pantera, Mercedes, and Cobra. All of them out to admire the row of Union Jack cars!

As everyone had plans to spend time with their Mum’s, we ended the day without a drive to Streets of London. Because of Mother’s Day and being too close for an annual affair for the British Car Club, we will have another British event for EuroSunday Plus again later in the year. Keep your eyes and ears open for the announcement on this second event.

February 17, 2008 “The 2nd annual Swedish Cruise-In”. The Puget Sound Volvo Sports America chapter will again host the 2nd annual “Swedish Cruise-In” meet, 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM Sunday, President’s weekend at the 1930 original Pacific Northwest XXX Root Beer Drive-In in Issaquah, Washington. Volvo and Saab Clubs will meet again for a fun day and the “People’s Choice” awards for the “Best Swedish Iron” for both Volvo and Saab cars showing that day. Last years attendance was 38 Volvos and 26 Saabs in attendance. This year’s meet will be larger so please arrive early for parking next to the XXX Drive-In restaurant before 11:00 AM and then dine on some great food from the XXX Drive-In menu. Last year’s 2007 car show winners may show, but not be eligible for 2008.
