Hi everybody. I've got a couple of problems on my 850 and I put a search in Google and came across this site. Seems very helpful. My 2 problems are both here! My glovebox problem is not unique, it seems! My oil pressure problem is also mentioned, the only problem now is - where is the PCV vent and how do I unblock it?
Good to have so much help available from so many people. I am always amazed at what you can find on the Internet (and I work in computers!).

Hi There....I have just picked up a 1995 850 SE with an electric front drivers seat which was working when i test drove the car but 3 days later it does not respond. Any ideas on what i can check or what might be wrong.

I have a question about the exterior trim piece that runs along side the front window along the top of the car to the rear on both sides.

On my car it is a black rubber covered metal.

It is begining to lose it's rubber covering on the passenger side. (that's an understatement)

I have been using a carwash that uses strips of cloth which is better on the finish but was more stressful to the old rubber coating. Is there a place to buy this piece and is it a DIY type of job?

The metal underneath isnt that bad to look at once the yellow coating has come off. My worry is that the yellow coating is a protective one and I will develop problems with either the metal or the window seal.

Any advice is gladly accepted

How do you get the speedometer cluster apart to get at the gears that go bad. The speedmeter works fine but the odometer quit.

I just bought a used 850. Registered it and got the new titlle and registration. Put these in the glove box and closed it. Drove to insurance agent and surprise I can not get the glove box to open! I have 4 keys (one is the limited service key) but no matter what I do it wont open. I am afraid to pry it and do not want to set off the air bag or break more than I have to. Do any of you have ideas?
Love the car other than the glove box. We also have a 740 for our son.

Sent my car to one of those 2-hour long cleaning places today, and they really did a good job. Seems like even the carpet felt a little fluff-ier.

But I found this on the rear-seat. It wasn't there before, I guess they found it, while cleaning, OR, they detached it from somewhere (while cleaning)... Anyone knows where it belongs?

I've upseated the rear seats just to find a pair or so, but... couldn't find anywhere it is supposed to go into...

have a light on it looks like a resevour with a fan in it. We replaced the thermostat it was bad. And it looks like my expansion tank has a crack in it. I don't know if the computer can detect that and that is why my light is still on or what. It just kinda worries me, it gets up to tempetature real quick but does not overheat just stays at half way like normal. my water gets really hot inside there to where it is boiling is that supposed to do that.?? Does a tech need to reset my light to get it to go off maybe??

The front brakes on my 94 wagon feel like there is a malfunction in the abs system, though I'm not exactly sure what it is. When coming to a complete stop, it feels like the abs clunks out and releases the brakes completely before grabbing the rotor again. Eventually the abs light on the dash comes on, i believe indicating that the abs has been turned off, and the problem is solved...until I turn the car on again. Anybody have any ideas?

How does it look to you. Sure enough, the price is premium compared to the original Volvo one, which should cost about half of it.

I have extracted a 2-2-3 code which is a fault in relation to the Throttle Position Sensor.
I have had the flashing arrow only come on when the ignition is started , never has it come on during transit.
Can the TPS be repaired?
Can the component be tested proir to removal and if so how?
Is there any links to sites showing how to remove and install these sensors?

Anyone know the answer to this. I have an 850 with rotational tyres (no it's not spelt wrong, I'm British! ), ie. there's an arrow on the side of the tyre which shows which way it has to rotate. I damaged one the other day and need to replace it. Question is, do I have to replace it with another rotational tyre or can i just buy a normal tyre to go on the car. Thanks - Roy

ive just bought my first 1994volvo T5 estate and love it but it had no swan neck .its got everything else but no swan neck.
so i thought no probs i can buy one WRONG i can only buy full towbar.
so im stuffed anyone out there selling one??

I´m having problems starting my 850 GLE when the engine is hot. It wont start first time i crank the starter. Only second time it will fire right up. There are no problems when the engine is cold. It also misfires during acceleration. The "crankshaft position sensor" is not working and will be replaced shortly. Are my engine problems related, and could it be the sensor causing them? I checket the rotor and cab, and they were corroded. I cleaned it up. Shall i replace rotor, rotorcap and cables?

Hi Guys, just bought 850 T5, 97 122,000 miles, got a tick noise from top end, sounds like a small end crossed with a stuck tappet, not always there though?, now i have read and heard you guys mentioning, oil pan o-rings, can anyone advise what these are , where they are , how easy to replace? how much, and whether i am safe to drive it as i spent most of my budget buying it and cant afford for it to go bang? any help would be really apreciated

Has anybody experience any tappet sounding noise from your engine. The noise was just like when you were a kid you stuck a piece of paper in your bike wheel and it happened as quick as snapping your fingers.
Three different mechnics said they thought is was a tappit that had dried up.The 1996 2.3 engine has had its full synthetic oil changed sometimes every 3000miles.(engine now 9600) .
The local garages would not look at the car because of special tools required.
The car is now with volvo and they reckon that a small end had gone but they haven't strippid it down yet.?.
Any comments.

My 95-850 Sedan has just started stalling when the car is started. Starter is fine, but as soon as the engine starts, it stalls. I can keep the engine running by keeping the RPM above 1200, but once it drops below 1000, it stalls.

Any advice from anyone?

I hear a noise (like a high speed fan) when I reach about 60K/hr from the front. It goes to a higher pitch when the car reaches about 80-90K/hr. I have not noticed any abnormal wear on my wheels. Is this because the front bearing are gone? they say replace including the hub?

Would appreciate comments from those that have similar experience.

We had the A/C evap replaced in Feb. We haven't been running the A/C very much since then. We did run it on a warm day few days ago. It stopped running cold after a while. After turning it off for a while then turning it back on again it was cool again. It worked today but I didn't have it on very long.

Before we had it replaced it only ran warm even after recharging.

It there a sensor or could it be the clutch on the condensor that cuts off. I may need to run it longer to see if we still hear the clicking sound when the A/C cycles at all when it stops running cold again. If it is a sensor, can it be replaced. ?$

Suggestions as to what the real cause may be? Possible next A/C repair. (We know that the evap was leaky and needed replacement before getting it done.)

It would be nice to have it working right again before the weather gets too hot since with went through last spring and summer without it working.

I am now seriously looking at 850 estates to purchase (lease car goes back in a few weeks!). However as someone who has always mis trusted auto box's on older cars i am surprised to find that second hand older autos are fetching slightly more than second hand manuals. This was certainly never the case some years ago around these parts at least.

So is it that times have changed and automatic box's can be expected to be as reliable as manual ones on ten year old cars, or is it a Volvo thing with the quality of this make?

About two thirds of the cars i am considering are automatic (there seem to be more about than manuals!) but can i expect a world of hurt if i buy one at this age??

it is a '96 850 wagon and the ac compressor does not engage. I have had the system charged. The system will come on but not always. The service department sugested to clean the switch going to the compressor but where is it. Any other suggestions for a trouble shoot.

This 850 GLT wagon I have just purchased has a SC810 stereo with the provision for a Cd changer. I have no CD changer. I am pretty sure I have identified a connection point under the drivers seat to house the changer. Are there compatible changers on the market ? I am led to belive that Alpine make a unit that is compatable , is this true? Also the genuine volvo changers are pretty rare in Australia as Ebay suggests.I havent hit the wreckers yet.
Could someone enlighten me regarding these queries. I also have to secure the code for the stereo as the seller did not have it either.

The weatherstripping above my windshield is kind of bunching up and pulling out. I was wondering if anyone's got any quick fixes or suggestions to this little problem. Should I pull it all out and reweatherstripit with something, slowly try to put it all back in, something else? It pretty much looks like hell, so I'd like to do something about it. Thanks.

I just got my 1994 850 Wagon waxed and it now shines!! However, the company that waxed it said they noticed some of the green (colour of my car) on their cloth after waxing. If i rub my hand over the car, i also see some green "dust" on my hand!!! What should i do to save my paint job??

I just purchassed a 1994 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon w/ 163k.

Any idea how much it should cost to replace the timing belt? It seems to be a consensus that it should have been replaced at 140k.

The car runs fine. Anything else I should look out for?

What is the best way to clean the EGR valve on the 850 Turbo. It was recommended that I pull the intake manifold and have it acid dipped and I don't mind doing this if I have to but if a pipe cleaner is just as effective I'd certainly like to go that route.

I recently had an check engine light come on and got code 154, leaking EGR valve. I took my car in an the mechanic (not technician) discovered that my EGR valve was clogged with carbon and that he would have to take off the intake manifold and give it an acid dip which would be about 2.5 hrs in labor so I opted to do it myself. The car seemed to be running fine until today when suddenly my car began to sputter and bog and die at low rpm. Above 1500 it runs normal. This problem began immediately after I bottomed out on a pothole. I later noticed that my radiator mount had broken and that the radiator had dropped and that the bottom plastic chamber(attached to turbo exhaust hose)was broken and air was coming out. The car is behaving like it has a vaccum leak and I wonder if this would have anything to do with it? No other vaccum hoses seem to be pulled out on to of the radiator. What do you think?

I would like to pick your minds on 2 topics.

A. My 2 year old son reclined the electric driver's seat to the fully reclined position.
Now the back of the driver's seat will not incline back at all. I had to drive about an hour yesterday with the seat back all the way laid back. When i press
the recline button, i can still hear the motor run, but it does not incline back.
All the other electric seat controls are still working correctly. I didn't want to tear into the leather seats before asking here first. How can i either manually or electrically incline the seatback to normal driving position.

B. The car is throwing codes indicating 1) Lamda sensor, 2) knock sensor.
The mechanic said that by replacing the Lamda sensor, it could possibly take care of the knock sensor. Is the Lamda sensor the same thing as an O2 sensor. How difficult of a task is it to replace the Lamda sensor? Is this something that a novice person such as myself can do? I am somewhat OK with a wrench.

All opinions are welcomed.

Or where i can get the instructions from without paying?
I dont want to start it without a few tips or the whole instructions incase i make it unsafe.

1996 850SE Auto Right Hand Drive.
Cant find the diagnostic unit. Its not next to the washer fluid. Is there any chance that some cars came without it. There is a socket infront of the gear shifter under the coin holder, can that be anything. Help, ive got all the codes ready but no diagnostic unit.

Just bought a 97 850R wagon and want to install the oil pan skid plate and reverse warning radar system on it. Volvo sells the skid plate at Volvo Houston for $145, the Bosch Parkpilot radar system for $327. Does any one out there have a cheaper source, used or new? Any suggestions or wanting-to-sell much appreciated. Dick

Need a dipstick for a 93 850. Bought it without it. Need just the stick. Not the tube. Anyone know of a match for another car, that would work. Can't find one, new or used, anywhere.

I purchased a California 850 T5-R a couple of months ago and for a 10 year old car, the condition of the exterior is good. However, there is some fading of the plastic. It actually looks more gray than black and I am not sure what the original color was. I read about a product called ForeverBlack, but I not sure the plastic was really black to begin with. Any advice on products to restore the plastics? Thx.

1997 850se. My dipstick doesn't show a reading even though there is oil in the engine, weird or what?

I own an '82 240 glt with 290,000k miles, 2 1985 740 turbo's with 200,000k + miles and an 89 740 turbo wagon. All of these cars could easily go another200k- or so it seems. Acting on what seemed to be an inspired tip from my trusty Volvo Master mechanic, i bought a 1997 850 GLT (70k) which I love... light years beyond my 80's models in terms of plain joy of driving. Well, my life circumstances have changed and i now have to part with my fleet (at prices way below their true value)so that i am forced to live like a normal person with one trustworthy Volvo.
I don't know if it's genetic paranoia or what, but,will this 850 GLT go the distance that my other Volvos have ? Is the 5 cylinder engine 300k capable? Any one know for sure? Thanks for any kindly advice. Or, any information based on experience.

How would i know if the mountings need checking?

... or how many exactly are there?
... or where exactly are they?


This above is assuming that I don't have a lifter at home. And of course, though I know the easiest way is to go check at the mechanics, but just wondering what is it that I should be aware of, with regards to the topic.


And oh, how long (time or KMs or Miles) do they last?
