We recently purchased an 850 Turbo Wagon with the realization we would need to replace the transmission which we did, we then we took it on a trip. On said trip the car over heated luckily we were on the freeway and dealership row just happened to be the next exit. Once at the dealership we found out the coolant overflow tank was ruptured and the thermostat was bad, on top the fact several of the hoses, five in all were hooked up wrong. The next day we took it to a friend of my moms who was a Volvo mechanic of the old school right from Sweden he fixed our hoses but informed us our rear main seal was leaking badly. And that the transmission guy should have replaced it, when reinstalling the transmission, also the hoses that were miss placed or wrongly hooked up would have been done when the transmission was replaced, and that the transmission guy was the one responsible. Well, when we returned home and informed the guy that replaced the transmission about all of the problems and the over five hundred dollars we had to spend to fix it, he said. I quote, (we did not do any thing with the engine so we could not have hooked up the hoses wrong and the rear main seal has nothing to with the transmission), now I know he must be lying but how do I prove it. Does anyone know if when replacing the transmission on an 850 Turbo Wagon, you need to get into the engine from above and remove hoses, then put them all back together after reinstalling the transmission and if the rear main seal is part on the job?

If so, please let me know we have already paid the guy several thousand and do not want to get ripped off any more if we can help it, thanks. Buy the way I am a quadriplegic paralyzed from the chest down and my wife and I have four children two sets of twins, eight and three. Three boys and one girl, the main reason we bought the car was so the whole family could ride together in one car, we love the car but do not want to end up with a money pit or a mechanic that takes advantage of us. We just do not have the money for it, I cannot work and my social security pays very little so my wife god bless her takes home all the responsibility of making our families income.

What are the differences between the two? I am interested in getting one and I just wanted to know what makes the R an R? I know the braking is different but I want to know if there are any internal engine mods. or are the differences all bolt ons?

just bought a 1995 gtl 850, when i got it i had a problem with the mas air flow sensor, there was white smoke coming out of the exaughst and it made my car reek of gas so i changed it and the white smoke stopped. the next day i brought it to aamco to have a oil leak checked out. turns out it was some oil sensor on the block it had broken loose and oil was coming out pretty decently, they got a new one and fixed that problem. when i went to pick it up i was told that they went to start it up and the car wouldnt turn on. and that there was no spark at the plugs, they diagnosted it and told me it was my ignition coil and plug wires.

now that i ve sunk 600 bucks into it it still wont start. im trying not to get angry with the techs there, they ve gone through and deturmined it s not the ignition, plugs, distributor, theres just no spark

any ideas?

I need your help. I've got a check engine light on, which turns out is due to the o2 sensor needing to be replaced. My car passes smog otherwise. I'm flat broke and can't afford the repair. ($450 quote)

I heard that if I disconnect my battery, then reconnect it, it will cause the light to go off long enough to pass the smog. Is this true? Will it work?

I'm planning on getting the item replaced, I just won't be able to do it for a couple of months and I need to get my current reg sticker on my car.

Also, how do I disconnect the battery. I"m COMPLETELY clueless as to car repair/maintenance!

Hi All

I've got a 1996 Volvo 850 CD Automatic Sedan and according to the stereo book the premium single CD stereo. My issue is that the CD player doesn't work - whether that's because its quite old and needs replacing or if it's just a simple fix and also that (I'm pretty sure it's likely to be wiring) the speakers on the right side of the car don't work. Has anyone had similiar problems and if so, what did you do about it?

Cheers guys this is a really good forum. I jumped on due to the odo not working and am going to tackle that fix once I get a kit for a Kilometer rather than Mile car.

I'll just add on the side, what oil is best for the engine?

Logging Air Pump fault. Pump motor is open circuit. Does anybody now a bypass so DTC is set ?

It's been awhile since I wandered around these forums but I recently ran into a problem with my Vovlo 850, it seems that it happens much more frequent when it has recently rained or is wet out, or the car is getting wet. The car will sometimes have trouble starting up.(takes a few seconds longer to start)

The other problem is (and this has happened to me a few times) I would stop at a stop sign and idle for a few seconds, or maybe more, seems like the longer I am idleled the more likely it is to happen, I step on the pedal and the car seems to struggle to get going, it will hiccup it acts like it's going to start moving but it chokes and hesitates and sometimes it even dies, and I turn the key and it starts up fine and I can keep on rolling. But I am concerned at what's going on and I'd like to get it fixed, I brought it to my local garage (a VERY good mechanic, real honest guy, doesn't charge for something he can't fix) and he couldn't figure it out, so I was wondering if anyone here could offer some help?

The car has died on me at least 3 or 4 times and the it usually happens after idleing if I can keep the engine going, maybe putting it in park at a stop sign and revving it a little can keep it going, feels like if I keep my foot on the pedal it won't happen, again it doesn't ALWAYS happen but it's enough to concern me.

My battery light comes on during initial acceleration, but goes off once it gets to speed. Could it be water in the battery, new battery? It's getting worse over time.

OK, I have a 1996 850 turbo that is surging and getting a code of p103. The code says "MAF sensor input high". I have replaced the MAF sensor but still have the same problem. Today it is just stalling out after a couple min.

I own a 1996 2.5 glt version.

my speedometer recently stoped working and after a diagnosis I found out that the abs computer is dead .

I looking to buy a replacement but I want to be sure that the computer from the older models is the same so if any body knows it will be extremly helpful.

if it helps the part number of a computer from 1995 model is 6849538 (I have no idea what is my part number), I added an atachment picture.

the reason i'm asking is because when I look on ebay the sellers say it fits 1993-1995 so...

I'm new to this forum and hope someone can help me out with this.
My car was serviced a few months back, but the Service Light now comes on and stays flashing while driving and at idle.
I understand this light has a tendency to be erratic, but also that normally, since it's just a reminder of service due, it stays on solid (ie not flashing) for a couple of minutes, then goes out.
Resetting the light can only be done manually on a 1994 850 GLE and I've followed the correct procedure for this: pressing the button on the connector block A (to the right of the washer-filler cap) in the sequence 4-1-5-1.
I've done this before and it proved successful, but this is the first time the light has stayed on and flashed.
Any ideas, solutions?

have a 1995 850. it just started smelling like gas in the cabin. replaced mas air flow sensor but smell persists. fuel preasure s fine. any ideas as to the cause? it doesnt seem o be coming from the vents.

another question my fan speed only works on high. settings 1-3 do nothing?

I have a 1993 Volvo 850 GLT. The battery drains after a few days of not driving. I put an amp meter in line with the negative battery cable and it showed 79mA. I started pulling fuses and when I pulled #7 (Radio/Amp) the draw dropped to 27mA. I continued pulling and when I pulled #15 (Radio, Courtesy Lamps, Door Warning, etc), the amperage dropped to 9mA. All other fuses had no real affect on the draw.
It appears I have a radio issue and I will leave #5 pulled until I figure it out. #15 has more safety options with it, so I will leave it in for now.
My question to the board is, "What can I expect the standard draw on a sitting battery to be?" Is 9 mA acceptable? 27mA?

Okay so basically my 1994 850 turbo stalls every time i let it sit when I start it up. The only way to make it not stall is to drive immediately after starting it. Before it stalls the whole car starts to shake. A buddy of mine said it may be the spark plugs but I wanted to post on here before I went out and spent money on them. Any ideas?

I have a problem with my 1995 850 GLt. The problem seems to be there only when the engine is hot. It hesitates and strongly shudders when I press the accelerator from 1500 to 2500 rpm. The problem is worse when the accelerator paddle has not been pressed for some time (more than 5 sec, like waiting in front of a traffic light, long decelarating in gear with fuel cutoff). The problem is also gone if I accelerate very slowly with the gas pedal pressed only 1/5th of the way down or less. From 2500 and above there is no problem.
The problem is there irrespectable of gasoline content in the tank and seems to be getting worse with each kilometer.
There is no "check engine light" on. The MAF sensor is 6 months old. Air filter new.

After having car in storage for couple weeks I have to blead rear breaks, there is a lot of air in the system. Car was checked and there is no break fluid leak in the system. Any tips?

So I never heard of the place. Do not know why they have a picture of a toyota on there for parts search but it says they are Volvo ONLY. Great thing, its like 45 minutes from me hidden up in the country. I havent been yet, my dad drove past it today and found their web site. KICK BUTT! I gotta do my end-zone dance.

I love this site and it has helped me with my 1994 Non-Turbo Auto 850. Until now haha. I have found so much on here about the MAF but have the following issue I though someone may be able to help me with.

My car was running well, however, after reading about others cleaning the MAF I decided to give it a try. I took mine out and used CRC on it. I also purchased a new air filter element, cleaned out the filter box, air inlet tubes and flame trap. I then put it all back together except the MAF. Whilst I was doing this my 6 year old son grabbed the MAF to ask what it was and at the same time broke the internal sensors with his fingers!

I went to a dismantlers and acquired a spare one but when I put it in, the engine started running rough, and the "check engine" came on with the 121 fault.

Thinking it was a faulting MAF I acquired I cautiously drove back down to the dismantlers and tried 3 other MAF sensors. Clearing the codes between each, they all resulted in running rough and stalling as well as teh dreaded "Check Engine" light and code 121. (I therefore, after 3 different MAF sensors, do not believe this is the problem.

I drove back home and just now retraced my steps to make sure I reinstalled everything correctly. Same issues continue!

Wondering if anyone has any ideas?

So I was driving my 850 T5 out to dinner tonight, I felt a big bump and now the engine runs rough when I accelerate hard, generally over 2500 RPM, and doesn't feel like it's getting anything from the turbo.

The CEL came on when the bump happened. Did I lose my turbo already?

About 2 months ago it started hesitating and stalling when cold, After it warmed up it would idle ok but hesitate when accelerating. Yesterday, it started but would not stay running unless you gave it some throttle continuously. Needless to say it makes for a challenging drive.

Any ideas as to what might cause this? I have been through many pages of postings and no one seems to have my exact symptoms.

Hello everyone, my first post here.

I have a 1995 Turbo 850 Wagon, crimson with black leather interior and the cold weather package. It's been a great car, but not without its problems.

Today what I am puzzling about is the odometer. It stopped working one day when I pushed in the trip odometer. I figure there is a speedo cable input in the back that maybe has come loose. But then again, I could be wrong. The speedometer works, and the digital readout (avg fuel use, miles to 0, outside temp, etc.) still works. So I figured today I could just remove the instrument cluster and get at the back to fix (like a BMW735i I used to own) but after removing a few screws I found it to be more difficult than I thought.

So...am I on the right track here? Or is it electronically controlled and should I be looking elsewhere? If it is in the cluster, has anyone removed one before?

i have a few repairs that i need.

1. on the driver's side door the wind does not always roll all the way down. it seems to be an electrical problem

2. same as above on the sun roof.

is this a DIY fix or is it somthing that needs fixed professionally

I have a 1997 Volvo 850 N/A and have a check engine light concerning the cat. The worst is my inspection is up this month. I know this car's computer isn't smart at all, so bypassing the cat could work. I was wondering if anyone knew the resistance I need to bypass the o2 sensor?

If anyone knows any ideas besides getting a new cat, let me know.

Had my car loked at by a Volvo specialist. Was told the ABS controller is bad hence the ABS and Tracs lights on sometimes. Who repairs these, where are they, can I contact them for pricing?

Also I have a crack in the exhaust manifold near a flex joint? I'm getting exhaust smell in the car whilr driving in town. Is this a difficult job? Sounds like a manifold is expensive.

The heater hoses from the block to the firewall are bulging. how do I remove the hose from the coupler on the firewall, special tool or just by hand. I know that the couplers sometimes break but don't know exactly how to remove and re-install them.

Air Conditioning compressor, mine is making noise but working. Are these expensive to replace, difficult? What other components should be changed out when doing the compressor?

Again, my first Volvo so forgive my questions that may seem basic. I am an aircraft mechanic by trade and have my share of car repairs over the years and I'm not afraid to tackle tough jobs. Thanks for any help here!

hi guys, so here's my question, it appears that on my '95 850 GLE i only have 1 oxygen sensor on it. what i want to know is, if the sensor craps out, will i get the "CEL" light on the dash? or is it one of those things that you change after x amount of milage? thanks

How do I clear the ABS, Tracs and Service lights form my dash on my 97 850? The Tracs switch does nothing when I push it. I need new brakes and rotors all the way around and I haven't looked at the sensors yet to see if they have grime and buildup on them. I just purchased this car and I am new to Volvos. Purchased a manual but not much in it on warning lights and how to clear them. I do have an OBD 2 tool but I don't read any codes. Any help here would be appreciated!

I think I've found the AC compressor in my 850...has anyone replaced one? I think I Want to give it a shot myself, but it doesn't look like the most simple thing in the world to access...

Hi guys, just wondering if any of you might have or might be able to take some pics of the a/c compontents on the 850''s? (compressor, evap...ect)
My car has the a/c button but when i turn it on the air doesn''t get cold and i don''t hear the compressor working? i don''t know if i still have the proper components or if they where yanked out.
Also, if they are all there, and there is a leak(no more freon), will it cause the compressor to not kick in? thanks

I have water in the fan housing, since the drain tubes to the vent shroud just below the windshield, under the wipers were clogged--forcing water up and into the fan housing. I cleaned them out, but cannot get the water out of the fan housing. I am able to open the recirculate vent and see the fan. I tried getting a small hose between the fins to suck out the water, but that did not work. Is there a evaporator drain hose that drains this fan housing, or should I loosen the housing screws and try to drain the water that way? What is the location of any other drain hoses that may be causing this, such as the aforementioned sun-roof drain tube?
