I everybody..
another sad problem with my car - this time it got me really ****-off!!!!
as soon weather gets a little colder .. my windows inside are sweating(fogging) like ****- need to run afan on full power almost all the time if I am driving not alone specially... air intake filter changed, and closing/opening properly... next week gonna to some garage (owned by volvo technician..) but would like to know- any experience around what to look for? It has been always scarry for me to remove any of interior parts... one clip broken and ... it might cost more nervous driver...
Please some advice. I'v got a auto a/c- 2 zones- for the driver and a passanger.

I have just fitted a new radiator to my 1996 850 Estate. Running fine but after a while the expansion tank sensor light will come on. From what I can see, the coolant is being forced out under pressure from the expansion tank cap. I fitted a new cap - same result. The engine is not overheating at all and after a while the sensor will go off until town running brings it on again. The top hose feels solid is if there is air in it. I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Hello all and Happy 2006.

1993 Volvo 850, (nonturbo), manual, 135000 miles in Atlanta, GA.
Car burns oil; about a quart every 5000 miles.

3 problems (for now):

1. Clutch has begun making a slight noise every time it gets pushed in. Still lets me shift etc, just makes that icky sound. Any idea on whats wrong and how much it should cost me to get fixed?

2. RPM's will run up without there being a increase in speed. Gotten so bad that it has trouble taking off on hills etc. Will start SLOOOOWLY then after alittle while it "catches" and gets up into speed. Same problem happens in hills while driving where I have to downshift and rev the rpm's to not loose speed. Compression problem? Manifold/valves? Price?

3. I suspect there being a exhaust leak in the manifold or gaskets. Will sometimes give a small bang underneath the car just after shifting. Ideas? Price?


Any and all suggestions/answers GREATLY appreciated.

Please can someone have a look at their rear fog light switch in the dark - does yours light up? Mine is hard to see in the dark (largely cos it sits behind the steering wheel), but it looks like it should have a light - should it?

I have a '94 850. The ABS light is coming on.

tells me enough to read the codes, for various sockets.

Since I have my ABS light on, I read the A3 socket and got 141 142 143 144.

from a helpful guy in Poland, gives me lots of fault codes, but does not relate them to the socket. It lists 121 122 123 124 as ABS codes, (faulty sensor for various wheels) but no other codes. ??

is often cited as THE place to look for fault code info, but it apparently gives codes only for the fuel system, which is socket A2.

Anyone have the complete list of A3 (ABS) codes?
Or, can anyone tell me what 141 142 143 144 mean?

Has anyone ever experience their ignition not turning?

I recently bought a '96 850R (not a '97 as I put in the title...) and I expect that the radio is not original because it does not have a CD player and the window sticker in the glove box says it did.

Can someone help me out as to what model number radio is supposed to be in this car? Also, does anyone have a clean, working radio for sale?

my father in law owns a 95 850 turbo. he bought it on eby last week he checked
the oil and found coolant in the oil. does anyone know a common problem
with coolant in the oil. we dont know the first thing about volvo please help

Hi there, I have a problem myself. I bought the car (93 Volvo GLT) about 4 months ago during the summer but I never bother to turn on the heater to make sure it worked. Just last week when I turn it on I noticed that it smells like radiator coolant. I took it to the mechanic and he told me that it was leaking and needed to be fixed but it would cost me between $700 & $800 labor, parts and all. So, I took it home and disconnected the houses. Now I need to change the heater core and I am finding out that I need to take out the entire dashboard out.......The car works fine and I love it......Any suggestions on how to proceed?

I have a 95 850 Turbo sedan and a wagon and I am trying to program a third keyless remote I have done the turning the key on 5 times and then pushing "lock then unlock" but it is not working... now is it possable there might be already 3 remotes programed in and it will not accept any more remotes... if that is true how do i REMOVE all remotes and start over....

Hi everybody. I purchased a 93 850 over the summer and have had climate control problems (as many people appear to). These forums have been very helpful with a lot of my problems but I don't know how to handle this one.

I have ECC, had a bad blower motor - fixed that.
Blew my fan speed controller - haven't fixed that yet.
Can't control which vent the air blows out of, it will only blow to the feet. - Time to check fault codes.

So I figure out how to read the fault codes, but when I do I get no blinks from the B1 socket. The others work fine, I was able to get codes from A2, A3, and B2 (I stopped there as it was mighty cold out).

What could be the cause of there being no blinking?

I am a new (used) Volvo owner...
I was really happy with my volvo until a few weeks ago.
Here we go...
It all started with the W light flashing. I was going to work and not out of the driveway when it started. Left the car there and took the other vehicle.
A day later, my boyfriend tried to start the car and.... It won't start. The fuel seems to be going through, we changed the spark plugs, (they were really finished) and the distributor cap and still won't start. My boyfriend usually is a good mechanic and still cannot find the problem. We checked everything. Even plugging the block heater, battery and starter are fine.
Please help us, we are desperate...
I really would like to get it going, I am missing it.

hi new to this i have a couple of saab aeros and am thinking of going back to volvo but i have never had a t5 850/v70.

what is the 0-60 time of them and is the manual or auto the best option and what is the common faults with them as i will be buying second hand

Within the last few weeks or so, the FM band on my radio has been very hit or miss. Sometimes it's fine, most of the time it's completely out, and once in a great while it's in between, functional, but then scratchy (like a when a needle skids across a record) for a few seconds before cutting out.

It seems to have started just as it got unbearably cold and wintery, but I don't know if it's coincidental. AM band and CD work great.

If it'll go away in the springtime, I'll just suffer, but if my radio's toast, I might as well just get on it and start shopping for a new one

My 93 850 GLE appears to have no gas in the AC. It was serviced two years ago and refilled but is gasless now - anyone know the likely leak point - is there a common place to look?

where can I find this relay? there is no listing in the owners manual, and the Haynes manual is its usual no help at all. when I open my doors the lights on the doors come on, but not the roof lights, they work when I flip the switch. and sometimes when i go over a bump or slam the door hard it works fine. do I have to buy this relay at Volvo? I just spent 50$ on some lights for dash switches, i dont need that again.

I am new to here. I am looking a Volvo 850 Turbo 1996 from a freind. There is a problem about transmission shift: Whenever change shift from parking to other position, I need to push a botton at the right side of shift gear in the same time to change shift. It happened some time, is this a problem should be taken care of? Also There is a light in dash board, but not malfunction of brake light or parking light. How can I chage the light myself?

I just got my 1993 850 GLT back from the mechanic a few days ago, who replaced the camshaft sensor and the distributor and rotor caps. Since I've had the car back, a stange buzzing noise starts when I hit about 50 mph. It's a constant vibrating/buzzing noise when I'm on the highway and it doesn't happen unless I'm going at least 50 mph. The noise seems to be coming from my interior light console. I removed it and unplugged the wires and sunroof motor wire but this didn't cause the buzzing to stop. I have no idea what it is. Can anyone help?

According to my fault diagnostic codes, the driver/passenger damper motor is not operating and I have no passenger side heat or defrost in my 95 850 wagon. This really bites up here in rainy B.C. My trusty Haines manual says to remove glove box and access the motor through the opening. Not a chance.
The motor appears to be right behind the heater/ AC control panel. I pulled the radio and popped out the control panel and am now looking at the ducting for the two middle dash vents completely obstructing access to the motor.
Is this a dreaded "remove dash" job and come at it from the top ?? I guess the boys and girls at Haines didn't think this damper could ever fail.

I rear ended someone in my 1993 Volvo 850 GLT recently and busted the front end. The radiator is busted and both airbags went off, but the engine, transmission, and many other parts are still good. I want to sell the car for parts to try and get some of my money back. The car was in excellent condition and only had 96,000 miles on it. It has leather seats with all the available options. Will accept any reasonable offer. Attached are a couple pictures of the car.

is it possible to change the fan belt yourself or do you have to take it to garage?

Hi I normally drive a 740 but have recently bought a 95 850 which has started to stall and become difficult to start and then hey presto it's perfect untill the next time. I suspect the fuel pump or the fuel pump relay. Where are these fitted in an 850?

96 850 GLE. when I turn on the left turn signal all is good, but when I turn on the right turn signal I hear a short beep and then all turn signal functions are disabled. no right / left / hazards...nothing. If I turn the car off then back on everything is good until I turn on the right turn signal again, any suggestions.

I have only had the car for about 6 months, so I don't know too much about where everything is, I was thinking the signal indicator but have no idea where to look.

Do you know how hard it is to drive to work not turning right, with bad roads....not good.

I also noticed, some time ago, I don't think it's related that when the air or heat is on the fan makes a loud noise is that expensive to have fixed?

SPLIT CV BOOT VERSUS ORIGINAL??

Both my cv joint boots are ripped and need to be replaced immediately.. I can get two split cv boots on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VOLVO-SPLIT...1QQcmdZViewItem for about $50 and do the job myself.But is it worth it? I need it to last for about a year of normal driving..This set uses tiny nuts and bolts instead of glue to attach the rubber to itself..
What would the correct repair cost be and is it worth it for a year? Any opinions will be appreciated..

Having an issue with front driver side window. The button works going down but wont go up. After several minutes of pushing up button it finally goes up. Motor seems fine going down, no loud noises. I am thinking that it is a button issue. What could be the issue here not sure. Can I change out one of the window switches too see if that is the problem??? It also has been raining since this problem started. Was fine when it was sunny and dry. Maybe this could be it?????

New member here and in desperate need of help.
My 94 850 has 74,000 miles and was recently serviced (10,000 miles ago) including tranny flush/service. the other day I went to back out of the driveway, the back up lights came on but the tranny didn't engage, after checking the fluid which was in good shape (red and slippery), I tried it again, finally after revving the motor up to around 2500 rpm the tranny engaged but roughly then disengaged again. I tried cycling the shifter lever 30 times or so but it still doesn't work right. the only gear position that I get any response in is 3, or D but even then the tranny feels like it's slipping and once I let off the gas it comes to an immediate stop kind of like the e brake is on (which we never use). I cringe at the thought of taking it to a mechanic (would have to tow it). any ideas????

I'm hoping it's just the pnp switch but I get no flashing arrow or other indicators and the back up lights come on. only other thing to add is I drove over 500 miles over a 2 dy period with no issues at all, it was just a sudden failure.
I haven't had a chance to check any codes yet, just been too busy.

But! Today I played with my remote and my engine started automaticly.

First I thought I left the car running, but after turning it off and "playing" again the car started again.

When I came home I checked the manual but found nothing.

alternator. I own a volvo 850 tdi from 1996 with 400.000km.
Yesterday my alternator was smoking...
Just ordered a spare from a crashed car. But i have some problems to replacxe it.
I have no place to get the alternator out of the car. Must i disassemble the radiator
also? Even the ac ???? That means refilling.
Has somebody a solution how to...

I have a 1995 850 166,000 miles. It leaks oil on the exaust. about a quart every 3000 miles. I don't know where. I cant find it, nothing on the ground, the plugs don't foul. But when I turn on the heater the inside of the car smells like burning oil. Just the heater not the AC.

can they be replaced or not? I need two on my wagon. I know BMW says they cant be replaced and you have to buy a whole arm, but thats not true. I have found this website that seems like I can get just the joint, but im not sure how to read it. http://altrom.com/content/parts/partsDetails.aspx

I think I found a loose wire. It's the one under the drivers seat that looks like a round sensor. Is this for the air bags ? It's in the bottom (or seat) of the drivers seat. And how can I reset the SRS light ?
