854 T5 96. Does someone have the part number for the A/C low pressure switch?

Just added another Volvo in our drive... a 1995 850 wagon for our 16-year-old. The title named the vehicle "1995 850 station wagon". It has a 5 spd. manual. There is no "GLT" label on the exterior and no sunroof.

It's a Base or Basic 850? But CARFAX shows the VIN is associated with a 95 850 GLT wagon. The CARFAX report is clean.

All the 850 GLT's I see listed in 850 GLT model specs on the internet or described in used car ads have a sunroof... ours does not. Other variations in features could have been easy changes for the two previous owners... but the sunroof?

Heard of GLTs without a sunroof? What about other variations in what we could expect to be "standard" or "optional" features or specs for our GLT? Should this be any concern when it comes to matching parts during servicing or repairs... or adjusting settings on any of the mechanical parts?

I was wondering which kind of chains am i allowed to use for my 850 turbo with 205/50/R16 tires? Do i have to buy strictly the factory ones or i can use other brands?

I am in need of some expertise from you guys. I have a 1994 volvo 850 turbo that is blowing oil and is experiencing positive crankcase pressure. I have been told by my volvo dealership that it is a flame trap that is clogged. After further research I am finding that the 850 TURBO models have NO FLAME TRAP. Could I get confirmation that this model does or does not have a flame trap? thanks!

Hello to all fellow Volvo owners. I have just bought my first Volvo 6 months ago.....I have to admit I am now a true fan of this car and make. My question is this......

Both of my turn signal and my four way flasher on my 1993 "Volvo" 850 GLT tend to freeze when turned on. They freeze after approx: 2-4 times of indicating the turn or the fact that I am stopped and want other motorists to see the four way hazards. I have found that I can get them to reengage if I click the four way hazard button on and off a few times.....

Has anyone else had to deal with this?

Could you provide me with any possible solutions to fix the problem.

It seems that there is a wide range in prices for these vehicles.

the paint condition is excellent, there are some interior imperfections, but overall a good car.

I have a 93 850 GLT that suddenly started running roughly and backfiring. It has no power and I can barely back it out of the garage. When it starts it runs OK for about 10 seconds and then starts acting up. I've replace the RPM sensor, the O2 sensor, the distributor cap, rotor and plugs. I'm running out of things to replace!

It acts as though the timing were off or a couple of the plug wires are switched (they're not) I've read that you can't adjust the timing manually. Is that what the cam position sensor does? Could that be the problem? The diagnostic codes don't indicate that it is bad, but you know how computers are.

Anyone have any ideas?

Im going to need new tires soon and I was windering if it would be possible to go from stock 195/60r15 to 205/50 15?

First of all, congratulations on the forum. Very helpful. I'm new to this one and already found valuable info.

My problem is that the speedometer needle stays at zero til the car accelerates around 40 kmh, then it goes up fast and in the meantime, the transmission(automatic) tries to change gear but RPM goes high but nothing happens.
Above 50 kmh, it works normally.
I suspect one speedometer gear is broken but before I remove the top of the dashboard, could somebody confirm that it is most likely the problem.
I have to mention that the orange arrow (for transmission malfunction) is flashing as well.

Any help is muchly appreciated!

A few months ago my turn signals functionned on and off, sometimes 2 or 3 days without functioning and than they would work for a day or 2.

Now my hazards and turn signals do not function at all, a few things I must mention though, firstly I live in Montreal (read cold weather) and secondly during the holidays I had my car repaired for my brakes and was at the garage for a few days, right after my turn signals worked fine for about 3 or 4 times after which they went dead.

Funny thing though, yesterday I triggered my cars alarm (to see if the flashers would work), a volvo factory installed alarm, and the flashers and hazards worked fine, since the car alarm sets them off.

therefore they do not work unless I set off my car alarm, not very practical. So i know the 4 way flashers work, if triggered, but unfortunately they do not function during normal usage.

do you have a solution for me?

The climate control on my newly purchased '96 850 turbo wagon blew air regulated by the temp controls, but not by the master control all winter. It was fairly evenly distributed between all outlets. Now that it's warmer, it blows only warm air, mostly through the heater outlets. Any ideas?

Hmm, tech (and others, hi byt the way). I've had my 850 for 200,000 reliable trouble free miles. I love it. Returning from a long biz trip the battery seemed too w eak to start - so i jumped it from another car. Initially it ALMOST caught and fired, but seemed pretty reluctant. So I fiddled with the jumplead connexions and tried again - this time engine turnes but no spark at all. I changed the batttery (it needed it anyway) but still nothing.

I've noted a couple of similar posts (found your EXCELLENT forums that way, but can't find the 60 amp relay fuses, or an immobiliser switch. All suggestions welcome - some urgency - car is not at home, but I'd like it to be!!

How do I replace the faulty switch? Check out the picture. When I put it in DOOR position, it does not work correctly. I have to press on the button for it to work.

I want to disassemble it to see if the problem can be fixed before getting a new switch, which AFAIK is not available separately.

I just had the a/c evaporator replaced in my 850. They pulled the whole dash out, and when they replaced it the passenger side is not as cold as the driver. In fact; it's not really cold at all. The mechanic worked it for 3 days and could not find the problem. I have also noticed there's some exhaust leak in the passenger vents as well. I would like to be able to take the car back and say: "Hey, try _____". My wife thinks they put it back together wrong. I think it may be in the actual passenger dash unit (the seperate, manual, temp control). I just bought the car last week so I don't know how well it worked before the a/c went out as I bought the car with absolutly no a/c. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My 850R's gonna need new ball joints/control arms within the next 6 months.

I figure since I'm taking everything apart, I might as well make it a suspension maintenance party. Even thinking about upgrading to better shocks and some more aggressive lowered springs.

Naturally every website that sells Volvo suspension parts says that particular product is the best one on the market. Uh huh.

I'm sure there have got to be some Volvo tuners out there who wish to voice their opinions on aftermarket manufacturers of control arms, shocks, springs.

I'd sure like to hear them

I'm a first time user. My car has 69,000 miles on it and is in great shape.
Recently, I had an transmission oil leak and drove it a max of 12 miles, I did not drive it dry. My mechanic said that it needed a new axal seal and while he had the tranny out he replaced the o-ring seal and some other interior seal that he replaced.
On My first day of driving the car from a stop and go position,
the car started making a strange whirling sound on acceleration and it seemed like it would not go into first gear, or rather slowly. Other gears are fine.
I did not have this problem before I took it in for work, other than the oil leak.
And the oil leak occured after he changed out the tranny oil pan seal-
that's when it all began.
Any suggestions???

After I crashed my Jimmy in a white-out in December, my wife decided that she should get the newer, all wheel drive Subaru Outback wagon with which we replaced the Jimmy. She gave me her '93 850 GLT sedan, what I understand is called a *three box Volvo*...I agree. I took it over about a month ago with 163K miles on it.

I have nearly 3K trouble free miles so far, but it's exhibiting a couple of worrysome symptoms. One is a *something's loose* clunk that's coming from the RF suspension every time I hit a notable bump. The other is an *on all the time* check engine light.

At the moment I am more worried about the check engine light. It's been on for three or four days now, for a total of about 240 miles. The owner's manual says that driveability might not be affected, but that the emission control system should be checked...is this just a matter of having a mechanic check it with a code-reader ??? I would agree about driveability...I've noticed no differences in sound, performance, engine response, fuel economy or anything else. The catalytic converter was replaced ~ 5K miles ago. What are the common faults that might cause the engine light to come on? Any insights woudl be appreciated.

Otherwise, I love my new FOFO!

Well aside from my FM band only working sporadically (mentioned in a previous post) in my R's "premium sound system" now half the face no longer lights up, including the large center one. New bulbs or fuses are all I hope it is.

I've never taken my Volvo radio out, let alone taken the radio apart. Anyone have experience with this?

Hello, I am new to this site. I just bought a great 1996 volvo 850 T5 from someone on ebay. It has a lot of miles but its a volvo so I didn't mind. When I picked it up there were a bunch of problems. I was wondering if anyone can help me. The stereo never worked it just says off when you turn it on. The battery died when I went to pick it up so I never had the stereo working. Now I found out the code and tried entering it but all it says is off when I turn the stereo on. I pulled out the stereo to find out if anything was disconnected and I saw a spot that says amp and nothing is connected there. First I was wondering if something is usually plugged into that and if anyone knows what could be the problem? I also have a 240 wagon DL that I am going to get rid of because I just bought this car. I am very happy to be a member here so I can chat with other volvo owners. Thank you for your help.

Anyone had this one? It's a cold night and you have to move your 850 a short distance, say on a car park. You move it. Lock it up and go back into the house. A few hours later you try to start the car and.... nothing. An acknowledge 850 problem but volvo don't seem to have a solution! This happened to me yesterday. Luckily it was at my mechanics waiting for some other work to be done. He tried everything but the car still wouldn't start. Then he heated all the plugs until really hot (untouchable) put them in and the car started first time. Anyone any other cures for this annoying problem besides as i do, if i have to move it when cold, even a short distance, I take it for a small run before shutting the engine off. - regards - Roy

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum AND Volvos in general...

My gf recently bought a 96 850 (naturally aspirated) to replace her worn out 89 Galant...seems to be a nice car (til someone backed in to the front right quarter panel while she was at school can probably be pulled out and buffed though) and today I got to drive it back from her parents' house which is about 40 miles.

Anyway, car rides great and has decent pickup but there is one thing that is majorly wrong with it and she is not sure when it started (personally, i would have noticed this as soon as it started). The first good turn I went in to where i had to turn the wheel more than a few degrees I noticed that it would almost violently try to jerk back to the center position, release, then jerk again. It would continue this cycle until the turn was over.

The force with which it tries to center itself is independant of brake pressure (she says her anti-lock brake light comes on sometimes, fluid is just above minimum fill line...need to add some) or turning direction. This problem is bad enough that I consider it unsafe but she drives at slower speeds than I do but I am worried it could lead to a bigger problem or failure.

She needs to bring it in for a tune-up (I am unsure of mileage) but I was hoping that someone else here has had or heard of a similar problem and could point me in a direction to ask them to check specifically. At first I thought it was maybe because of uneven tire pressure (had a squirrely front end on my 04 grand prix after front tires were replaced...discovered air pressures on 2 of the 4 tires were 8PSI different and a 3rd was off as well) but the more I drove it the less I thought that was the culprit, it is way too forceful/violent and does it at almost all speeds.

I have done a little bit of research but have come up pretty much empty-handed so I figured it was time to post on one of the online forums and this one looked pretty professional. Would a bad steering rack cause a problem like this? It is not binding up or anything like that. I was thinking a bad power steering pump but not sure that that could so adversely affect the steering, especially once the car is going a decent speed.

Any help or ideas would be extremely helpful, she is in college and does not have a lot of money to throw at a mechanic to swap all kinds of parts out. Thank you in advance!

Hello Im 15. Me and my dad ran across a 95' 850 Turbo with 188,000 miles on it. Alot I know. for $1500 I can probaly get it for 1000 b/c I know the guy and hes rich now. Like any car what It comes with is never enough. Always want a little more power. What are some aftermarket manufacters and disributors web sites if there are any? The car is real clean. It gonna need new rotors and tires though. any suggestions? Any help about anything would be great. thank you

Hi I have a 1992 850 GLT (Japan new and exported to New Zealand) - the airbag SRS self test light has come on as a fault. The guy I bought the car off had a quote from a dealer that said a new airbag control unit was required. This fault is apparently a very rare part failure on 850 - other dealers in NZ have not sold one such unit as a replacement since 1992! Heat such as direct sun on the centre console has been suggested as possible one reason for the damage.

I disconnected the battery for 24 hours and the fault has not self cleared.

I have been looking around the globe for a second hand unit one without much luck - apparently the early 850's (1991 - 1992 & probably not the USA model which was first sold 1993?) did not have many interchangeable parts whereas the later 850's had a number of interchangable parts such as the airbag control unit for the period 1993 -1997.

The part numbers are Volvo 3515884 and Bosch 0 285 001 035. Bosch say that the unit was not made after 2000 and there were no supercessions.

Does anyone have any ideas for this problem? - I also got a part number of 0 285 001 041 coming back from the USA - this may be the 1993 unit that may or may not be interchangeable with the 1992 850 unit.

Hello all, my gf has a 94 Volvo 850 non turbo and it is needing some repairs and I am figurin while we r fixin it I want some performance parts. She doesnt wanna do anything performance to it but if its almost the same price as OEM parts than thats what we r gonna do. I am a big car guy myself I work on my 96 Pontiac Grand Am SE as often as possible as u can see ---

hi i own a 740 and have owned a 740t both great cars. i am thibking of getting a 95' 850T and am wondering if power is better, milage, ease of maintenence, i am a mech and feel the 740 is a breeze to work on, with the turbo a little tough but all around no big deal. i just don't want to get into something that will suck...thanks for the help...dan

I recently replaced the battery in my 97 850T-5. I have the four digit radio code but do not no how to reset the engine's computer. My understanding is that I should turn the key one click and allow it to sit for approximately two hours. Then turn the radio on, see the CODE message and punch in the code. My radio only says OFF. I look forward to hearing from someone.

I am having trouble with 10year old 850 estate boiling over - I've drained it and filled it as per Haynes Instruction manual to no avail. It'll do 50 -80 miles with the guage bang on the middle then suddenly the temp will go up and start blasting steam/water out of the expansion cap. I've replaced the cap and the thermostat seems to be opening ok. No leaks of any kind.Any help would be much appreciated.

Just bought my first Volvo. I got a 1995 850 base model with 102K miles. Only had one key with it so I have buy another key(which sucks). But before I buy the key how can I tell if a remote will work on my car? Where will the receiver be if it has one?
