I recently took my machine in for MOT. Left front ball joint failed, which had to be replaced, cos of too much play on it. So it was replaced by the garage (about £62 -parts + labour) who did the MOT. I figured to replaced the right hand one, too, so recently bought a ball joint from GSF.

At 119500 miles or so, my check engine light started coming on. It only comes on at engine startup and only stays on for two minutes.

The car runs great and the car's been checked out twice in the last 6 months, so I'm fairly certain that it's just the routine 120,000 miles routine maintenance warning.

Hello, I was at a stop light and my 850 wagon just turned itself off. I restared the car and it was running fine but I am a little leary about driving it. A month or so ago a similar incident happened. I was approaching a stop sign in my neighborhood and all the indicator lights (ABS, oil light, low gas light, etc) came on but the car did not turn itself completley off and a moment or two later...

Hi all! Just bought a used 93 80 GLT. Love the car in all ways except one: the "shiftlock" button next to the automatic gearshift is sticking pretty bad. Most of the time I have to press it down to move the shift-lever from Park to Drive. Then when I go to shut the car off, the button sometimes stays stuck down, and I cannot remove the key.

1993 Volvo 850. Car just decided not to start any more. It was running great then all of the sudden it just won't start. Did a bunch of checking and find that the fuel pump doesn't seem to be working. Removed the fuel filter and turned the ignition, no fuel comes out of the open line. With key in the 2 position I do hear a little whirring noise in the engine compartment.

I've attached a PDF of a spreadsheet showing our fuel savings since the end of November 2005. We had LPG installed into our 1995 2.5 10v 850 Estate. It makes interesting reading. Even adjusting for the 10% loss in efficiency we have saved almost £430 already!

The spreadsheet shows the cost of LPG and how much the petrol would have cost at the same time.

the cigarette lighter in my 1996 850 turbo wagon doesn't work. i know this seems like a mundane issue and isn't a big deal, and that's what i thought to, but i'm becomming a volunteer fire fighter and need the lighter for power to the flashing lights. (i don't want to hardwire it in).

I have a 94 850 and the passenger front abs sensor shows faulty via code reader.

The cable was split so i spliced in a new piece and reconnected it but that didn't seem to fix the problem. I am wondering now if i need to replace the cable or jsut the sensor? Any ideas.

I have a 1994 850 and have lost high speed the (4) setting but works on all the other settings. Any ideas how to fix?

Hi ...I am a new member to this Forum.
My 1996 850 volvo has stopped directing heat to the passenger and driver side footwells.

the car has an eletronic climate control system. The heater/blower works ok, the AC is OK, infact everything works fine...... apart from heat being directed to the floor.

I'm guessing it's something to do with the floor/defrost damper...

My 850 Turbo is running fine but after a long drive when the engine is hot it seems to have a fast anti freeze leak at the back right side of the engine. Any recommendations on what might be causing this???

The November issue of Grassroots Motorsports has a pretty good article on the 850. It goes over the history, differences in models, buyer's guide, and some performance tuning. Nice to have if you really like the 850.

Hi all, I did a google search and found this site, I have a 94 850 turbo wagon and has an intermitten stalling problem.

When it stalls, it is usually within 2 miles down the road after starting the car. It doesnt matter if it is 70 mph down the highway, or stopped at a light. It has done when it is warmed up as well as cold. There is no other pattern other than it will usually start...

I'm adding a cd changer to my 850R. I have read that the unit is mounted in the trunk. Is there a pre-drilled location where the changer mounts, or is a grab bag and you decide yourself where to mount it? My car will sometimes start, but not run long. Fuel pump primes for brief 1/2 second after turning on ignition. Car starts after cycling key 4-5 times -- measuring the fuel pressure shows it about 40psi. Car runs but dies in a few minutes. 1993 Volvo 850, (nonturbo), manual, 135000 miles in Atlanta, GA.
Car burns oil; about a quart every 5000 miles.

3 problems (for now):

1. Clutch has begun making a slight noise every time it gets pushed in. Still lets me shift etc, just makes that icky sound. Any idea on whats wrong and how much it should cost me to get fixed?

Please can someone have a look at their rear fog light switch in the dark - does yours light up? Mine is hard to see in the dark (largely cos it sits behind the steering wheel), but it looks like it should have a light - should it?

I recently bought a '96 850R (not a '97 as I put in the title...) and I expect that the radio is not original because it does not have a CD player and the window sticker in the glove box says it did.

Can someone help me out as to what model number radio is supposed to be in this car? Also, does anyone have a clean, working radio for sale?
